What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We have a small development team. Early Access allows us to focus our efforts onto the features that matter the most to our users.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Anarchy Arcade should be fully polished and out of Early Access by January 2015.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The release version will provide first-time players a more elegant introduction into using Anarchy Arcade. It will also provide the features that were seen as most important by the Early Access users.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“In its current state, Anarchy Arcade is more than suitable for daily use as your primary 3D frontend to your PC.

However, you will experience a small amount of bugs & game crashes. You will also have to put some effort into learning how to do simple tasks, but after that it should be quick & easy to perform them.

The intro sequence is not very polished, but there are short tutorial videos included to help get you going.

There will be some features that are noticeably absent, such as missing in-game previews for certain file types.

Multiplayer mode is functional, but there are no dedicated servers and arcades are read-only when in multiplayer mode.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Anarchy Arcade is free in Early Access, but it is possible that it will retail for a very low price when it is released.

As of now, Anarchy Arcade is a mod built on the Source SDK Base 2013 Multiplayer game engine and is distributed to users free of charge via Steam.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Anarchy Arcade is being created specifically for the users' enjoyment, so user feedback is of primary concern.

The Early Access discussion acts as a direct line between users and the development team. If you have any questions, suggestions, or impressions to share, you can start a conversation there and get a prompt reply.

There is a public TODO list that shows all features that are waiting to be implemented, and the priority they'll be worked on. The list also contains bug reports and change logs for serious testers to follow along with. You can also participate via live Twitch.tv video streams of testing sessions hosted by the development team.

Easy & anonymous surveys will be routinely offered to Early Access players in order to get valuable feedback from more casual users.

The feedback will be directly used to improve the user experience of Anarchy Arcade.”

Workshop Re-Enabled & Wall Nodes Sharable!

AArcade's all-new and improved workshop update is now live! Many Early Access users have already shared some amazing creations onto the workshop.

If you're new to using the Steam Workshop, AArcade makes it easy with a built-in packing & publishing tool! You can share individual items, or entire arcades.

To share an arcade, just load up your arcade and press the P button to open the Packing Manager. Click Pack Arcade Save and then fill out the rest of the details on the form. After that, click Publish and be patient as your workshop item uploads. As soon as it's finished, AArcade will open the workshop profile of your newly shared item in the Steam overlay.

Also new in this update is the ability to share & subscribe to nodes! Just pull the lever next to a customized wall in the map named hub_walls to save your node and share it to the workshop!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GG822zJ-g8U

Technical Improvements
  • Uses the newest version of the Steamworks API.
  • UNLIMITED workshop file size.
  • UNLIMITED workshop shares.
  • You don't need to subscribe to your own shares anymore.
  • You don't need to store an extra copy of workshop items anymore.
  • Backwards compatible with existing "legacy" workshop content.
  • As always, shortcuts to local files have their folder paths hidden.

Remember that Anarchy Arcade shares media items themselves, not your copy of them. That means that it's perfectly fine to share arcades that have shortcuts to games or movies on your PC. Other people using your arcade would need access to their own copies of the games or movies to launch the shortcuts, and everybody can watch the preview videos regardless.

Last year Anarchy Arcade participated in the Indie Games For Good charity pledge drive & marathon Twitch.tv stream (http://www.iggmarathon.com/games/). Hundreds of indie games participated, and in total the event raised over $19,000.00 US for the Child’s Play charity. Pledgers were allowed to choose a game that they were most interseted in seeing played during the stream, and in the end AArcade was the 6th most requested game!

Earlier this week Valve announced that they will be introducing SteamVR hardware and a refined Steam controller at the Game Developer's Conference in San Fransisco (March 4th - 6th, 2015). This is exciting news for Anarchy Arcade users because AArcade uses the same VR integration as Team Fortress 2 itself which is devloped in-house at Valve. Client Update 2/21/2014

  • Fixed the Hulu.com spawner to use fullscreen embedded videos.
  • Fixed the TheGamesDb.net spawner to work with games that don't yet have a description.
  • Updated the Packing Manager to use the new version of the workshop API when publishing.
  • Improved compatiblity between v2 workshop items and existing legacy items.
  • Added a "Remove All" button to the Packing Manager.
  • Re-enabled workshop publishing.

Note 1:
Steam is still having issues displaying the old workshop content when browsing on the Steam Community, but all of the old content is still on the workshop and completely usable. There is no ETA on when Valve will have the Steam-wide workshop issues fixed so old content can be browsed like normal. Status updates will be posted on the forums.

Note 2:
This workshop update is intended for singleplayer only because support for the new workshop items in multiplayer has not yet been tested. Please be patient while I work towards completing everything and improve multiplayer compatiblity of the new features.

About This Game

Launches ANY program, supports THOUSANDS of community made maps & models, doesn't lag you down, and is the easiest & most useful 3D desktop out there. Start using it today and your entire PC will turn into an entertainment experience! Supports the Oculus Rift for a virtual reality experience!

Immerse yourself in the metaverse by transforming your desktop & the internet into a 3D world you can explore with your friends.

Anarchy Arcade is a media-focused 3D desktop with multiplayer and internet capabilities. It's unlike any game or program you've ever played before. With it you can consolidate everything you do on your PC into a fun & interactive gaming experience.

You use Anarchy Arcade to:
  • Create personalized, immersive 3D experiences filled with your favorite things.
  • Launch the links, games, movies, and other 3D shortcuts just like normal.
  • Share these experiences with your friends in multiplayer or web links.

Merging Reality with Virtual Reality

Anarchy Arcade lets you spawn real-life games, movies, pictures, and other media (directly from your PC or the internet) into the virtual world. In the screenshots here on the Steam Store page, we have labeled these real-life media items with a [CENSORED] sticker so you can easily see them. Just imagine your favorite stuff under those stickers.

Gameplay

Anarchy Arcade has persistent worlds. You never have to worry about saving or loading your progress. Things are always just as you left them. Each map gets transformed into a personalized 3D desktop.

In singleplayer, you always start in an empty arcade and turn it into an awesome arcade by spawning 3D shortcuts to your favorite games & movies. Everything you put into your arcade is worth a certain amount of points. When your arcade is worth enough points, you unlock the next arcade in the campaign.

Hosting or joining a multiplayer arcade allows you to explore the collections of your friends by walking around with them in the 3D world, much like singleplayer. Anarchy Arcade can launch the 3D shortcuts for any game or movie that you personally have access to. It can also give you links to places you can buy or download games or movies that you don't have access to.

In-game previews can be synchronized so you and your friend can watch videos together right inside of the virtual world!

NOTE: Anarchy Arcade does NOT use peer-to-peer file sharing or screen sharing functionality. You must personally have access to a game or movie to be able to play it. However, synchronized local file playback and other techniques are used to give the illusion of file and screen sharing without the need for strict moderation.

Anarchy Arcade is a Sandbox

The uses of Anarchy Arcade are so broad that it was necessary to focus on a specific aspect to help guide new players. Check out the discussion to see some of the great use ideas ranging from education to virtual meetings.

Anarchy Arcade's gameplay is focused towards media uses such as games, movies, music, etc. However, you are free to use it how ever you like. This is anarchy after all, you make the rules!

Anarchy Arcade is built on the Source engine and is able to mount & use resources from many other Source engine games including Team Fortress 2, Counter-Strike: Source, Gary's Mod, and more! It is also able to use community addon maps & models that were built for such games.

There are thousands of addon maps & props that are compatible with Anarchy Arcade. You can also use the Source SDK Tools to create your own addons. Steam Workshop integration coming in the future!

Storyline

You are a techno-genius with a fetish for hardware. The day after you move into your empty, new apartment, a package arrives on your doorstep. You unbox it to find that somebody has sent you a mysterious [censored] device! With this device you are able to teleport in hardware from the Nth dimension!

You start by spawning your entire movie collection on your wall; each movie on its own HD 4K flat screen TV. State-of-the-art technology... but then you realize time isn't an issue in the Nth dimension. Soon your new apartment is stuffed with media and technology from all eras of history. CRT's running old console games, arcade cabinets with their lights flashing, pinball machines with their gears clanking, futuristic motion simulations spinning out of control!

It doesn't take long for your ridiculous apartment arcade to become the talk among all your friends. Every day you have people stopping by your apartment, asking for a tour or wanting to play some of the awesome games & movies in your collection. It seems like the party never ends.

This is brilliant :) I love being able to see all my games out visually. There's something about seeing them in various arcade cabinets that make me want to play them. Can't wait until the multiplayer is more developed. So far no servers that appear. Can't wait to see what else is added. (in world building/scripting? or arcade-wide music?)

Highly recommended.

EDIT 2/21/15: Steam Workshop support is up and running for sinlge player mode (to be changed to multiplayer once Valve fixed the Steam-wide Workshop issues).

I installed and tested my first Virtual Desktop way back in 1998. It came with a new Gateway PC and, while it was an interesting concept, there was nothing about it that made me fell like it was any better than just clicking on my desktop icons. Since then, I've tried several more, with the same results: install, play around a bit, say "meh," uninstall. But....this. This...this should be called Addictive Anarchy Arcade. It's ridiculous how often I boot this thing up to walk around a virtual space to play a game, rather than just clicking the link in Steam.

For an alpha, it's incredibly stable. I've not had it crash once, and it runs much smoother than I had expected, given the age of my computer and the fact that it's a shell that runs other media from within. The only issues I've noted so far is that it can't play mp3 files (which is probably a proprietary thing), and it's not playing sounds to videos linked from your hard drive, but this is currently being worked on. Another slight issue is that it can take up to two days for newly added games in your Steam account to show up; however, this is an alpha build, and it's something the developer is addressing.

That said, there is so much goodness here. Obviously, you can use AA to build your own arcade, by very easily linking a variety of cabinets to your Steam Library. There's more though. You can place listening stations (or CDs on tables) or movies on the walls that, when linked to Youtube, any visitors to your arcade come come and watch or listen to. The game (because, at times, it really does feel more like a sandbox game than a virtual desktop) will even synchronize whatever movie you're watching so that you all see it at the same time. That's right: Anarchy Arcade can be multiplayer, allowing others to visit your arcade, and vice-versa.

Placing items and cabinets can be a bit clunky, but the variety is already pretty large, and there is promised Workshop support (currently, it's offline). New items and buildings (where you can build your arcade) are opened up as you place new items, earning points and reaching goals. It's a clever game-like concept and, while I'd have rather had everything opened at once, it did keep me coming back. Additionally, any content created for Source-engine games (Half-Life series, Portal, Counter strike, et al) can be imported here. Want to create an arcade using your favorite DOTA map? Do it!

The fact that this is free is just the gravy on this already delicious chocolate cake; once you play around, it becomes clear that this is a quality program from someone who clearly loves gaming and who is skilled at programming. The developer is dedicated, frequently on the forums, and open to suggestions: all bonuses to an already pretty great experience. Oh, and did I mention it has Oculus VR support?

Recommended? Absolutely. And at this price, what have you got to lose? Try it out, and get building: I want to check out YOUR arcade!

Anarchy Arcade is really freaking awesome!
It reminds me of The Sims the way you get to decorate your own home, but in this game you get to decorate it with the games, movies, pictures and other stuff that you have on your computer.

This game is basically your desctop in 3D, and it's just so freaking cool!!!

Your opinion on this game may differ from mine. Personally, I think this more a novelty than a game. It's essentially a 3D desktop environment (a brilliant one, mind you)

I think it's using the source engine. Overall, It's okay. I'm glad that it's free because it really serves no purpose besides managing things.

But it allows me to play SNES on steam.
So 10/10

I have been using Anarchy Arcade on and off since it was an itty bitty beta. It works really well as a 3d desktop app, if you're into that kind of thing. But where it truly shines is on the Oculus Rift. As the Oculus gains acceptance we start to see how the traditional menu > option interaction system become less relevant. Anarchy Arcade is a creative step in the direction of a fully immersive VR-desktop app. As such, it comes with some instructions that you really should read/watch.

One of my main gripes with the concept is that you have to load up one game to play another. But it's more about the time in between games that matters. If you get bored of playing one game and want to play another, you drop back into Anarchy Arcade and get to find your other game through the VR desktop (a.k.a your 'arcade'). If you're using the Oculus this means you don't have to take the headset off, and it's pretty cool too.

This is an interesting concept in human-computer interaction and I recommend people check it out. If you HAVE an Oculus, you cannot miss out on this one.
