What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Early Access allowed AArcade to be built around the suggestions of the Steam player community.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“AArcade's development is nearly complete and will be coming out of Early Access WITHIN A COUPLE MONTHS. The April 20th release date has been pushed back as we eagerly await news on a VR update to the Source engine.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version will have an improved new-user-experience with tutorials and one-click-access to the the best community content. Great effort will be put towards orienting new users to the concept of a 3D desktop so that they may enjoy what AArcade has to offer for many years to come!”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“AArcade's 3D desktop features are ready to rock 'n roll. The multiplayer features and the new-user-experience are currently being revamped in preparation for coming out of Steam Early Access.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“AArcade will be free. You shouldn't have to pay for a program that just launches your own stuff anyways.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Feedback & suggestions have shaped AArcade's development over the Early Access period. Features such as cooperative building in persistent multiplayer servers now exist due to the community's many requests for it. The Steam community can talk to me directly every Wednesday during a live Twitch stream or through the Steam forums.”

Dev Update: Redux & New Web Browser

The next update to AArcade is huge... a complete rewrite actually. The powerful Steamworks web browser is the first of the major changes that have been built into the new Redux version.

Brief History of AArcade
AArcade has been through a lot. Starting way back in 2010, AArcade's prototype saw its 1st public release onto ModDb and GameJolt.

Soon after it was greenlit for release onto Steam.

This was followed by a failed Kickstarter campaign attempting to raise funds for a full version.

After this major setback, I decided to continue working on the prototype independently to see the concept through to completion. This required lots of adjustments to AArcade's original design to make it an achievable project for a lone indie dev, such as myself, to complete.

A second, much smaller Kickstarter campaign was successful in raising nearly $2,000 which contracted artists to create game cabinets & other art assets for the project.

AArcade's souped-up prototype was released onto Steam as an Early Access title on 9/4/2014. Updates & improvements continued for the next year and a half.

In early 2016 it became apparent that Valve was focusing on other game engines, such as Source 2, and that Source 1 would sooner, rather than later, become outdated. Rather than let AArcade die from being tied to an outdated game engine, I decided to do something a little crazy. I started work on a complete re-write of AArcade, with the intention to future-proof the concept so we're never exclusively tied to any particular game engine. It would also give me the opportunity to fix or improve many other issues of AArcade that existed due to lack of foresight on my part when designing the prototype all those years ago.

AArcade's Next Version: Redux
The next major update to AArcade is expected to be available for public testing on Steam in early 2017. It is code-named AArcade: Redux and is actually a complete re-write of the old prototype from the ground up.

The technical goals of the redux version are:
  • Feature parody, including backwards compatibility, with all previous versions of AArcade.
  • Cross-engine compatibility, including abstraction of engine-specific assets, of library meta data.
  • Clear distinction between meta library data and engine-specific AArcade frontends.
  • Optimize performance, user experience, and modability of the Source engine frontend.
While a majority of the dev work will be under-the-hood, it has already begun to manifest itself in some very long-awaited improvements & feature enhancements that users have been requesting over the years.

There's so much good new stuff in the redux version that I couldn't possibly show you all the development progress in a single post. So I'll start with showing you just one of the awesome new behind-the-scenes enhancements to AArcade and what it means to you, as a user.

Steamworks Web Browser
One major change is to the old embedded web browser which has been completely replaced by the state-of-the-art Steamworks browser. In fact, it is the same browser that Steam itself uses! Compatible with Netflix, Twitch, and so much more, users can make full use of their favorite web content on the in-game screens.

Speaking of the in-game screens, AArcade: Redux has a new multi-threaded embedded instance framework which allows things like web tabs, emulators, or media players to playback on the in-game screens with minimal performance impact.

And speaking of performance impact, how about running 2, 3, or 4 web tabs at the same time? AArcade: Redux makes this possible, and distributes the task of web tab rendering over multiple frames to keep your in-game performance consistent.

AnarchyArcade.com's Massive Update
Last month Anarchy Arcade's website received a massive update with tons of info about AArcade's concept, its focus, and where its headed in the future. I'd appreciate it if you went and checked out my work there! There's even some stuff on there, like the 360 panoramas, that I will be explaining/showcasing in future dev updates: http://www.anarchyarcade.com/

Thanks for your support!
I want to thank everybody who's contributed to AArcade and showed their support over the years. Thanks to all the Kickstarter backers. Thanks to everybody who's donated through PayPal. Thanks to everybody who's Tweeted about AArcade or shared it with their friends. And thanks to all the users who help each other out in the forums or put that extra effort in on their workshop submissions.

Even though I use AArcade a whole lot myself, it's great to be able to share it with others, and it's support from people like you all that makes that possible. Party on!

First off this is not a game.

Secondly, i dont see the need for this, you spawn arcade machines and use them to open up programs on your computer.

Would not recomend.

EDIT 2/21/15: Steam Workshop support is up and running for sinlge player mode (to be changed to multiplayer once Valve fixed the Steam-wide Workshop issues).

I installed and tested my first Virtual Desktop way back in 1998. It came with a new Gateway PC and, while it was an interesting concept, there was nothing about it that made me fell like it was any better than just clicking on my desktop icons. Since then, I've tried several more, with the same results: install, play around a bit, say "meh," uninstall. But....this. This...this should be called Addictive Anarchy Arcade. It's ridiculous how often I boot this thing up to walk around a virtual space to play a game, rather than just clicking the link in Steam.

For an alpha, it's incredibly stable. I've not had it crash once, and it runs much smoother than I had expected, given the age of my computer and the fact that it's a shell that runs other media from within. The only issues I've noted so far is that it can't play mp3 files (which is probably a proprietary thing), and it's not playing sounds to videos linked from your hard drive, but this is currently being worked on. Another slight issue is that it can take up to two days for newly added games in your Steam account to show up; however, this is an alpha build, and it's something the developer is addressing.

That said, there is so much goodness here. Obviously, you can use AA to build your own arcade, by very easily linking a variety of cabinets to your Steam Library. There's more though. You can place listening stations (or CDs on tables) or movies on the walls that, when linked to Youtube, any visitors to your arcade can come and watch or listen to. The game (because, at times, it really does feel more like a sandbox game than a virtual desktop) will even synchronize whatever movie you're watching so that you all see it at the same time. That's right: Anarchy Arcade can be multiplayer, allowing others to visit your arcade, and vice-versa.

Placing items and cabinets can be a bit clunky, but the variety is already pretty large, and there is promised Workshop support (currently, it's offline). New items and buildings (where you can build your arcade) are opened up as you place new items, earning points and reaching goals. It's a clever game-like concept and, while I'd have rather had everything opened at once, it did keep me coming back. Additionally, any content created for Source-engine games (Half-Life series, Portal, Counter strike, et al) can be imported here. Want to create an arcade using your favorite DOTA map? Do it!

The fact that this is free is just the gravy on this already delicious chocolate cake; once you play around, it becomes clear that this is a quality program from someone who clearly loves gaming and who is skilled at programming. The developer is dedicated, frequently on the forums, and open to suggestions: all bonuses to an already pretty great experience. Oh, and did I mention it has Oculus VR support?

Recommended? Absolutely. And at this price, what have you got to lose? Try it out, and get building: I want to check out YOUR arcade!

With the new update I can simply not recommend this. I enjoy playing with friends and ONLY friends, not randoms coming to spy on us and annoy us. Metaverse is just not a good thing to me. I wanted to set up a server with a town where me and friends would each have one house, but that will no longer work.

Re-add friends only hosting and I will change this review. I'm really not happy with this.
