What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We have a small development team. Early Access allows us to focus our efforts onto the features that matter the most to our users.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Anarchy Arcade should be fully polished and out of Early Access by January 2015.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The release version will provide first-time players a more elegant introduction into using Anarchy Arcade. It will also provide the features that were seen as most important by the Early Access users.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“In its current state, Anarchy Arcade is more than suitable for daily use as your primary 3D frontend to your PC.

However, you will experience a small amount of bugs & game crashes. You will also have to put some effort into learning how to do simple tasks, but after that it should be quick & easy to perform them.

The intro sequence is not very polished, but there are short tutorial videos included to help get you going.

There will be some features that are noticeably absent, such as missing in-game previews for certain file types.

Multiplayer mode is functional, but there are no dedicated servers and arcades are read-only when in multiplayer mode.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Anarchy Arcade is free in Early Access, but it is possible that it will retail for a very low price when it is released.

As of now, Anarchy Arcade is a mod built on the Source SDK Base 2013 Multiplayer game engine and is distributed to users free of charge via Steam.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Anarchy Arcade is being created specifically for the users' enjoyment, so user feedback is of primary concern.

The Early Access discussion acts as a direct line between users and the development team. If you have any questions, suggestions, or impressions to share, you can start a conversation there and get a prompt reply.

There is a public TODO list that shows all features that are waiting to be implemented, and the priority they'll be worked on. The list also contains bug reports and change logs for serious testers to follow along with. You can also participate via live Twitch.tv video streams of testing sessions hosted by the development team.

Easy & anonymous surveys will be routinely offered to Early Access players in order to get valuable feedback from more casual users.

The feedback will be directly used to improve the user experience of Anarchy Arcade.”

Client Update 4/9/2015

  • Added a Skip Tutorial button to the Basic Training prompts.
  • Fixed the reflections in the tutorial map.
  • Changed F1 to bring up a selection of help videos to watch.
  • Removed the old unlock system.
  • Added a NEW unlock system that is managed by Steam stats.
  • Added a fictional in-game currency called "tickets". You earn tickets as you play, then you get to choose which unlocks to spend them on.
  • Added an Achievements menu. Use it to spend your tickets or check your stats.
  • Added an Achievements button to the Message of the Day.
  • Added an Addons menu. Use it to manage your workshop subscriptions, game mounts, search providers, and emulator profiles.
  • Added an Addons button to the Message of the Day.
  • Fixed an issue with the basic training map that would reject certain valid image URLs.
  • Added the console command "fixwebviews" to test a fix for an issue that could cause irresponsive web views.

Unlock System Notes:
The new unlock is powered by Steam stats, so this is the very last time you will have to deal with re-unlocking your cabinets. You normally earn tickets by doing things like launching games or decorating your arcades. You will also earn large amounts of tickets for earning achievements. There is a cheat code you can use that gives you 3,000 tickets if you are a veteran AArcade player and don't want to deal with unlocking your cabinets again.

To spend your tickets, you go to the Achievements menu to choose which prizes you want to unlock. All maps are UNLOCKED from the start, so they aren't even listed in the prize shop. All cabinets & props are LOCKED from the start. Just click the UNLOCK button next to the ones you want.

Big $$$ Cheat Code
For a limited time only, you can use the following console command to give yourself 3,000 tickets instantly: vipstatus

Note that you can only use this cheat code once, and your stats will remember that you used it. So only cheat if you are a veteran AArcade player and not interested in the new unlock system at all.

About This Game

Launches ANY program, supports THOUSANDS of community made maps & models, doesn't lag you down, and is the easiest & most useful 3D desktop out there. Start using it today and your entire PC will turn into an entertainment experience! Supports the Oculus Rift for a virtual reality experience!

Immerse yourself in the metaverse by transforming your desktop & the internet into a 3D world you can explore with your friends.

Anarchy Arcade is a media-focused 3D desktop with multiplayer and internet capabilities. It's unlike any game or program you've ever played before. With it you can consolidate everything you do on your PC into a fun & interactive gaming experience.

You use Anarchy Arcade to:
  • Create personalized, immersive 3D experiences filled with your favorite things.
  • Launch the links, games, movies, and other 3D shortcuts just like normal.
  • Share these experiences with your friends in multiplayer or web links.

Merging Reality with Virtual Reality

Anarchy Arcade lets you spawn real-life games, movies, pictures, and other media (directly from your PC or the internet) into the virtual world. In the screenshots here on the Steam Store page, we have labeled these real-life media items with a [CENSORED] sticker so you can easily see them. Just imagine your favorite stuff under those stickers.

Anarchy Arcade has persistent worlds. You never have to worry about saving or loading your progress. Things are always just as you left them. Each map gets transformed into a personalized 3D desktop.

In singleplayer, you always start in an empty arcade and turn it into an awesome arcade by spawning 3D shortcuts to your favorite games & movies. Everything you put into your arcade is worth a certain amount of points. When your arcade is worth enough points, you unlock the next arcade in the campaign.

Hosting or joining a multiplayer arcade allows you to explore the collections of your friends by walking around with them in the 3D world, much like singleplayer. Anarchy Arcade can launch the 3D shortcuts for any game or movie that you personally have access to. It can also give you links to places you can buy or download games or movies that you don't have access to.

In-game previews can be synchronized so you and your friend can watch videos together right inside of the virtual world!

NOTE: Anarchy Arcade does NOT use peer-to-peer file sharing or screen sharing functionality. You must personally have access to a game or movie to be able to play it. However, synchronized local file playback and other techniques are used to give the illusion of file and screen sharing without the need for strict moderation.

Anarchy Arcade is a Sandbox

The uses of Anarchy Arcade are so broad that it was necessary to focus on a specific aspect to help guide new players. Check out the discussion to see some of the great use ideas ranging from education to virtual meetings.

Anarchy Arcade's gameplay is focused towards media uses such as games, movies, music, etc. However, you are free to use it how ever you like. This is anarchy after all, you make the rules!

Anarchy Arcade is built on the Source engine and is able to mount & use resources from many other Source engine games including Team Fortress 2, Counter-Strike: Source, Gary's Mod, and more! It is also able to use community addon maps & models that were built for such games.

There are thousands of addon maps & props that are compatible with Anarchy Arcade. You can also use the Source SDK Tools to create your own addons. Steam Workshop integration coming in the future!

Unlimited potential!
Not good at a game (lets say counter strike) place tips and trick around the game.
Have a whole arcade dedicated to what you like (attack on titan, zelda, star wars, etc) with funny pics and parodies decorating it.
But most of all have the ultimate mancave.

EDIT 2/21/15: Steam Workshop support is up and running for sinlge player mode (to be changed to multiplayer once Valve fixed the Steam-wide Workshop issues).

I installed and tested my first Virtual Desktop way back in 1998. It came with a new Gateway PC and, while it was an interesting concept, there was nothing about it that made me fell like it was any better than just clicking on my desktop icons. Since then, I've tried several more, with the same results: install, play around a bit, say "meh," uninstall. But....this. This...this should be called Addictive Anarchy Arcade. It's ridiculous how often I boot this thing up to walk around a virtual space to play a game, rather than just clicking the link in Steam.

For an alpha, it's incredibly stable. I've not had it crash once, and it runs much smoother than I had expected, given the age of my computer and the fact that it's a shell that runs other media from within. The only issues I've noted so far is that it can't play mp3 files (which is probably a proprietary thing), and it's not playing sounds to videos linked from your hard drive, but this is currently being worked on. Another slight issue is that it can take up to two days for newly added games in your Steam account to show up; however, this is an alpha build, and it's something the developer is addressing.

That said, there is so much goodness here. Obviously, you can use AA to build your own arcade, by very easily linking a variety of cabinets to your Steam Library. There's more though. You can place listening stations (or CDs on tables) or movies on the walls that, when linked to Youtube, any visitors to your arcade can come and watch or listen to. The game (because, at times, it really does feel more like a sandbox game than a virtual desktop) will even synchronize whatever movie you're watching so that you all see it at the same time. That's right: Anarchy Arcade can be multiplayer, allowing others to visit your arcade, and vice-versa.

Placing items and cabinets can be a bit clunky, but the variety is already pretty large, and there is promised Workshop support (currently, it's offline). New items and buildings (where you can build your arcade) are opened up as you place new items, earning points and reaching goals. It's a clever game-like concept and, while I'd have rather had everything opened at once, it did keep me coming back. Additionally, any content created for Source-engine games (Half-Life series, Portal, Counter strike, et al) can be imported here. Want to create an arcade using your favorite DOTA map? Do it!

The fact that this is free is just the gravy on this already delicious chocolate cake; once you play around, it becomes clear that this is a quality program from someone who clearly loves gaming and who is skilled at programming. The developer is dedicated, frequently on the forums, and open to suggestions: all bonuses to an already pretty great experience. Oh, and did I mention it has Oculus VR support?

Recommended? Absolutely. And at this price, what have you got to lose? Try it out, and get building: I want to check out YOUR arcade!

Basically, you can now play non-Steam games on Steam. Great if you want to keep track of hours in a game that's not on Steam. Otherwise, it just feels empty... You can get some stuff and design your home and what not, but specially the multiplayer needs quite a bit of work before it can be fun.

Also, don't try to post screenshots of other games in it, they will be banned, just so you know...

Anarchy Arcade is really freaking awesome!
It reminds me of The Sims the way you get to decorate your own home, but in this game you get to decorate it with the games, movies, pictures and other stuff that you have on your computer.

This game is basically your desctop in 3D, and it's just so freaking cool!!!

This has got to be one of the most creative ideas I've ever seen. Who knew how interesting making shortcuts into virtual objects that you can interact with could be so interesting? A lot of room for creativity too. I had a little trouble figuring out how to get more cabinets and items, but I eventually figured it out. Creative people are going to have the most fun with this when they set up their own virtual arcades. It's not even limited to games too! Any kind of shortcut can be solidified in game. It's going to take some work to figure it all out, but once you do they sky is the limit!

I like it! Anarchy Arcade allows me to set up Steam games in a virtual living room as if each selected game was its own arcade machine...playing both game trailers and/or the game itself. Sure, I can do all that in the Steam Library...but this sets it up so I feel as though I have the very game room my Wife would NEVER allow me to have in real life...lol. Not just games, though...videos, music, documents...whatever would fit on my computer desktop...but this is cooler. Also, a choice of 'rooms', including an apartment set-up, a nightclub and a handfull of other choices to set an arcade layout in. Very convenient, easy to set up, and creating the ideal escapist environments, at no cost. Mid-life crisis, anyone? lol
