What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Yep, we know it’s unconventional to develop on Early Access after a console launch, but we have a good reason: we want the PC version to be amazing. Rather than doing a straight port from console to PC, we’re refining (some may say re-defining!) the Secret Ponchos experience to make sure this new gameplay style we've created really shines so we have the strongest PC launch we can. And what good is being indie if you can't take some risks to make your game great?

The last 10 weeks we've been under the hood on the PC build, working with a small community from Early Access, to make sure this competitive and innovative combat game is firing on all cylinders when it launched fully on PC. We’ve completely rebuilt our matchmaking, our progression systems, and our first time user experience. But we’ve kept intact that competitive fast-paced core gameplay which has been the exciting heart of the game.

On June 02 we'll expand our Early Access program to bring in more players and start testing some high powered new content never seen before. This will kick off our "12 Weeks 'Til Showdown" program, when we’ll invite the community to participate within a very active development window. Each Saturday we will blast out a new build with new enhancements, content, and features. We hope you’re excited as we are about this!

We’re a small studio challenging ourselves to make this game reach its potential. Now we’re asking the Steam Community to join us to see if a small but passionate dev group, working closely with their audience, can make something that shakes up the competitive fighting game scene!”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“The full PC launch of the enhanced game is August 2015.

June 02 we launch our "12 Weeks 'Til Showdown" in which we focus on building our player base and on rapid iteration based on audience feedback of our newly enhanced PC features.

Each week is a critical opportunity to shape the new features coming in, and what the form the enhanced Secret Ponchos will take on PC.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The final PC version is going to pack some punch. The full PC launch this summer, is going to surprise audiences with a dramatic increase in features and content from what they've seen so far, because we want this game to be bigger and better. Our focus for these next 12 weeks is refining this experimental content.

- Adding a lot of new Content (characters/Game modes, and maps will be introduced)
- Finalizing our brand new Matchmaking System
- Creating an Alternative Player progression system
- Seasonal Leader-boards/competitive play
- Community UI (make it easy to add/interact with other players)”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Today on Early Access, the build is an enhanced version beyond the shipped console version. We are now in new territory, working with the community to add new key features and improvements. Gameplay, characters, maps, are still ready to go in a shippable state, but our goal is to push ourselves and take things further.

Most of the content will be at a very polished, clean state because we took them through that process while we were finalizing the console version. That being said we're not afraid to mess things up to make things better. New enhancements that expand on the previous feature set are going in, and they're going to go in super rough so you can see them early and provide feedback, then we put them through rapid iteration. Our community will see some experimental new modes, matchmaking techniques, game play variations, and a stronger player progression system to replace the old.
Please be aware

  • Match History and created outlaws WILL be wiped during Early Access, as we make changes to the underlying systems.

  • We want to be upfront with our community that our population during Early Access is small. We are a small indie dev team making an ambitious and original game... but it does not yet have that mainstream attention that a large commercial game might. By purchasing this game you are discovering us while we're small, and hopefully supporting us because you believe we have a cool game with the potential to grow into something special. It creates a unique experience to work so closely with a development team, which is the type of experience that makes Early Access great, but during the beta please keep in mind there may not be the around the clock matchmaking that the full game will have.

    * Graphic card compatibility support and optimizations for edge cases are still in process

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Our view on Early Access, is that you are showing support for the game before its fully fleshed out, or discovered, and we want to give you a better value in return. At launch, the final full game will be $19.99, with a larger scale of features characters, modes and maps. Along with a discount for Early Access purchasers, we will include a free gift key as a thank you for supporting the game at its' earlier stages, when the player population was lower, and the number of features just growing.

The game won't be on Early Access too much longer, so grab it now for some savings while it’s”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We've created an environment with as few barriers between our community and our Dev team as possible, no red tape!

Secret Ponchos is a new style of competitive game, and because this is a new beast, we need your help to make sure the game is firing on all cylinders. We are taking a look at the on-boarding, progression system, Outlaw Balancing, and getting your take on the the new Outlaws, Modes and Maps we're adding. Join in the action, give us feedback and we will love you forever!

  • We work hard! We drop new/updated content EVERY Saturday

  • Dev team presents changes to the community, explaining updates and answering questions via our Secret Ponchos Saturdays Twitch Stream. (10:30 am PST twitch.tv/secretponchos)

  • The dev team will answer you directly on our Secret Ponchos, and Steam Forums

About This Game

The summer launch of Secret Ponchos' "Fully Loaded" PC version is quickly approaching, and this is going to be a high powered upgrade! Thanks to the Early Access community we've been adding new content and features and have reworked the user experience to surprise audiences with a fully featured and enhanced final version.

On June 02, 2015, we start a supercharged Early Access development cycle for our final and critical stretch of the beta. We call this "The 12 Weeks 'Til Showdown," and it’s going to be an intense and fun program worth participating in. In each of the 12 weeks we’ll drop high impact updates to the community while getting your feedback and doing rapid iterations to get this perfect. This will only last (you guessed it!) 12 weeks, and then the final PC version "Secret Ponchos - Fully Loaded" will be launched! We are ready to put in the heavy lifting required to bring these features and new content to light, but we'll need your help to make sure Secret Ponchos Full PC version is awesome!

Join us starting June 02 to see if a small, creative and passionate dev team, supported by an Early Access community, can make a mark in the fighting game scene.

We were so excited about heading to this new frontier of merciless, competitive PVP gameplay, that we left the beginners behind! One major focus in the "12 Weeks 'Till Showdown" will be creating proper on-boarding, and supportive features such as AI that will help new players get in the saddle, building a bigger community.

More Content...Lets Do It! We're a small dev that stayed committed to a focus on depth and quality over quantity... It's the only way we could make a game like this. Now that we have the foundation solidified, its time to build on it and expand that content & variety. The game is going to be a lot bigger, with over 200% characters, and 200% maps, new modes, progression systems and seasonal rankings.

What is Secret Ponchos?

An original new take on how fighting games work. It is a fast-paced, strategic, and addictive PVP experience staged in a stylized Spaghetti Western universe of outlaws and bounty hunters.

  • Isometric style fighting game, Create an outlaw and battle online in PVP gang fights, or as a lone bandit.

  • EVERY MOVE IS A SKILL SHOT!! Fighting mechanics that use quick twitch reflexes, careful timing, and precision. Picture a split second dive roll behind cover, then rushing a pair of enemies guns blazing as you stun one and gun down the other. Secret Ponchos was not built as a MOBA, but as a fighting game that supports fast paced group combat.

  • Team play is an amazing fit with a fighting game. Form a Spaghetti Western gang of different outlaw classes, and enter the street to gun down your rivals in an intense shootout.

  • Depth of combat. You may simply run and gun at first, but the layers of combat run deep, creating room for a skilled outlaw to control the fight in the way a true PVP experience needs. There are a large variety of attacks, but everything has a cost. Evasion costs stamina. Every bullet matters since you have to manually reload. A heavy attack leaves you open for counter fire if you miss. Fights rely just as much on your ability to think under pressure as they do on quick reactions and true aim.

Key Features

  • 6 Unique Outlaws, and more to come Each outlaw brings a unique form of depth and gameplay style. Take Phantom Poncho, a deadly bounty hunter who glides quickly and with a crack of his bullwhip wounds enemies only to finish them at short range with a sawed off shotgun. Or consider Kid Red, a fast flashy gunslinger wielding dual pistols and explosive dynamite sticks. Each outlaw plays as different as they look, forming strong team combinations and limitless strategic possibilities.

  • Line of Sight: Take cover behind the environment to break line-of-sight between you and enemies. When breaking line-of-sight you will disappear from your enemies’ view, allowing you and your team to ambush, flank, or take a moment to reload and regroup. Our line of site and cover mechanics bring the environment into the shootout.

  • Combat Modes : A fighting game that supports gang vs gang combat! Team play sets it apart from the fighting game genre. It also includes traditional 1v1 standoffs for more intimate battles.

  • As you gun down opponents the game tracks your character’s match history and the bounties you have collected. Unlock perks, skins, and reputation classes as you gain notoriety and the bounty on your own head rises. Measure yourself in the competitive community via the leaderboards and ranking systems to see who is the most wanted in this competitive environment [/list]

    Starting Small

We're a small indie team making an ambitious and totally unique multiplayer game, so during Early Access our population won’t compare to the huge multiplayer titles some people are used to. If you buy Secret Ponchos on Early Access, it should be about discovering something cool and wanting to support it to get discovered and grow. You'll be part of a small community that works with the dev team to refine the game together. This is the advantage of having a dev team that's excited to work with a small community to improve their game. We're committed to being available to everyone for weekly play-sessions and feedback. If you want to have full lobbies around the clock like a blockbuster game, consider this fair warning that we are tiny and not there just yet!

Early Access + Full Release on Launch + 1 Free Copy as a Thank-You

    Controller & Keyboard/Mouse Now Supported

Secret Ponchos is a fighting game at its’ heart, so we recommend a controller for the best experience (PS4 DS4, Xbox 360 windows / XbONE windows controller or equivalent). However, due to popular requests from the Early Access community we have added Keyboard/Mouse support!

System Requirements

    • OS: Windows 7 SP1, Windows 8
    • Processor: Intel Dual-Core 2.4 GHz or AMD Dual-Core Athlon 2.5 GHz
    • Memory: 4 GB RAM
    • Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce 460GTX or AMD Radeon HD 6800 1GB equilavent or higher
    • DirectX: Version 10
    • Network: Broadband Internet connection
    • Hard Drive: 3 GB available space
    • Sound Card: Direct X 10 sound device
    • Additional Notes: Controller / Gamepad Recomended : Sony PS4 Dual shock, Microsoft Xbox 360® Controller for Windows®. Keyboard/Mouse is supported. Please note: these specifications are deliberately high as we are in the early stages of optimization. They will be gradually reduced.

Early Access Review
Multiplayer-only games are finding themselves in a tricky situation these days now that gamers are expecting a bit more from them. Once upon a time, it was enough to offer an experience specially tailored for a group of friends, but now that multiplayer has become commonplace to the point of being tacked on to most games unnecessarily, multiplayer-only titles are needing to step up their game more than ever. Although Secret Ponchos has blazed onto the scene with hardly any introduction, it does present an interesting, if imperfect, alternative to standard online FPS deathmatches.

Where Secret Ponchos shines is in its creativity, which especially shows in the character designs. Each outlaw has their own specialty and weapons, leaving it up to you to learn their mechanics and choose which style works best for you. While Kid Red is an easy opener, with his quick-firing pistols and room-clearing sticks of dynamite, veterans of twin-stick shooters may be more welcoming to a character like the Phantom Poncho, whose sawed-off shotgun and whip create a devastating combination in both close-quarters and distant combat.

More difficult outlaws come in the form of the Matador, whose ranged weapons are slow to fire and reload, but whose melee capabilities can be devastating if she gets close enough to an enemy. Similarly, the Killer uses a revolver with a low firing rate and an extremely lethargic (yet extremely deadly) dagger that requires much more precision than other outlaws. Finally, the Deserter is a tank through and through, bowling over opponents and blowing them away with single shots.

You’re allowed to create many different outlaws, all of which upgrade separately, and the upgrade system that expands their abilities is actually pretty creative. Players are rewarded a bounty after each match, and after a certain price is reached for your head, you’ll earn a few upgrade points to sink into one of a few categories. Of course, if you perform poorly, your bounty will lessen, leaving you at a disadvantage.

The combat is similar to your typical twin-stick shooter, albeit with a few twists. Characters can disappear for a few seconds if they take cover behind some scenery, and each is saddled with a small amount of stamina used to roll away from danger that is slow to refill but absolutely necessary for a clean getaway or a successful surprise attack. Outlaws are also outfitted with two distinct weapons, both of which have multiple uses that really allow for tons of improvisation and addictive battles.

The art style employed by Secret Ponchos is absolutely bursting with personality and color, making each outlaw a unique creation despite the fact that they never speak. The maps that are available, while small, are beautifully detailed, capturing the essence of old westerns perfectly, from decrepit saloons to rundown graveyards. Even if you don’t enjoy anything the gameplay has to offer, you can still appreciate the loving homages to westerns found throughout the game.

Of course, since Secret Ponchos is still a work in progress, it comes with its fair share of issues, especially regarding the balance of the characters. Simply put, some outlaws are overpowered, especially Kid Red. He can fire the most shots in a row, most of which have the chance to stun the target, leaving enemies a pulpy mess in just seconds. Compared to the slower, more powerful characters, Kid Red completely obliterates the competition.

There’s also a noticeable lack of content, with only a handful of battle modes available as of now. You’ve got your traditional free-for-all, team deathmatch and domination modes, but with only four maps to choose from, things get stale pretty quick. The ability to play locally with split-screen is a great addition, but it does little to add to the replay value.

As enjoyably intense as Secret Poncho can be, with outlaws diving left and right, firing six-shooters and sticks of dynamite at each other in the middle of a dusty graveyard, it’s still a work in progress that suffers from its unfinished nature. Secret Ponchos is an absolute blast that should definitely make its way into your library when its completed. The upgrades that are being promised could elevate it to a whole new level. Until then, however, it’s a fun title that feels incomplete and short on content.

This game is unbelievebly awesome. The game still has some work to do. BUT it is off to an amazing start. The dev team is super awesome and should keep up the work! 10/10 Give it a shot! You will not regret it!
Each class has its own uniqueness to it.
Gordo been the face upfront guy. (Rapid Fire Machine Gun, With Molotov)
KidRed being the "Watch me as i skip around you" Throw Dynamite in your face. (Pistoleer Rapid Fire Minor, Dynamite) *** Medium Challenge, Need to be elusive, and upfront with the enemy ***
Killer is down and nasty, knife throwing and hand cannon. (Knife thrower, Revolver)
Deserter being the support sniper role, Nice heals and nice crackshots ( Designated Marksman Sniper, Healer support pack, Adrenale boost)
Poncho straight whipin everyone he is infront of with a shotgun. (Whip, ShotGun ** Able to evasively shoot * )
The Matador .. she stabs you alot but very fragile. Takes time to getting used too. ( Two Flying Pokers, Sword w/ Cape ) ***** Very HARD, She needs to be elusive and needs to be precise with her hits. *****

Overall the game is amazing so far! The level design and music for this game is awesome 10/10
Recommend this to all those that like overhead shooters with strategy.

Twin stick shooters have been coming back for a while now, and Secret Ponchos is no exception to this revival. Old school gameplay mechanics mean you are relying on skill and reaction time to win. It's

I really enjoy the multiplayer in this game because its really competitive. Each character's unique skillset means a good balance of characters vs. skill on your team could be the difference between winning and losing. If everyone is running melee characters versus the more slower, long range character types it can completely flip the scales of the game. However, there are some people who just find great skill with one or two characters and regardless of what they're up against they've managed to master the art of the twin stick mechanic and own people. There is a great dynamic in place that keeps the game fresh, especially with the varying playstyles you'll find while playing.

There is most likely a character you'll align with even if you're predominantly an FPS/3rd Person shooter player, and while the twin stick aiming is harder to master than traditional FPS games, it's not an impossible thing to master. Take your time, learn the mechanics, and enjoy the game. It's a great competitive community and I'm really excited to see the next wave of players join in on the fun.

In short, I recommend the game for the fun casual mp with friends, and the competitive team-based aspect when playing against randoms online.

The only thing this game needs is a community.... that's where you come in!

I've spent a fair bit of time playing this game after meeting the Dev's at PAX Prime this year, I've had a ton of fun playing as the various characters, Kid Red being my favorite by far. Super fast paced, unforgiving but ohh so rewarding when you manage to pull of a crazy play. Plenty of maps, game modes, and characters with even more slated to be released with the games full release. The only thing this game needs is a good playerbase, and it's getting there with each new player. I'd highly reccomend this to any fan of shooters, mobas, or arena fighters.

Tip : A controller (prefferably ps4 but not essential) is HIGHLY reccomended.

Switchblade Monkey has created opne of the most beautiful and astheticly pleasing games I have seen in a very long time. The Character design is beyond amazing. The amount of style in this game blows my mind. It's fun, it's technical, it's pretty and it has much more to offer in their weekly content updates. The ONLY thing I want out of this game, is a Diablo style adventure RPG mode. The game is so awesome, I want to dive head first into the Secret Ponchos universe with an in depth story line and single player campaign.

tl;dr This game is beautiful, amazing, technical and I love it.
