What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“This extended edition comes with the work-in-progress Rogue Rider Adventure mode, it is a brand new experience made specifically for all the hardcore players. In that game mode you can make your own way through a randomly generated kingdom full of dangers and riches. But be careful there is no health, no lives and no checkpoints. Even bumping into a silly fence can mean the end of your adventure!”

How long will this game be in Early Access?

“Most of the game is already polished so it will not be long in Early Access anymore. It is only the Rogue Rider Adventure mode that still needs some work.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“It will have the finished Rogue Rider Adventure mode besides the already finished Story mode and finished Endless Journey modes.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“It comes with the finished Story mode, the finished different Endless Journey modes and the Rogue Rider Adventure mode which is still heavily in development. As of now planned features for that mode are: items/gear (useful and shiny), shopping (traders and in villages), customization (rider and horse), eating (food), pooping (food remainings), exploding (too much food) and sleeping (play generated knightmares).”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The price of the game will stay the same during Early Access. It will slightly increase after Early Access. Updates/dlcs/etc. will always be free, it will never have microtransactions and the randomly generated hats can even be shared!”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“I like to really build upon the Rogue Rider Adventure mode and you can help me with your feedback to shape it to something truly great.

Update #5 - Inventory, Traders and Food!

July 28th, 2014

Update 5 is finally done and it packs a lot of new stuff! Most importantly you have now a inventory in the rogue rider mode where you can manage your stuff that you can get now through the added traders as well as find in the treasures. Another important addition is food which some might suggest as the most important because without food you will of course die, while you obviously also die through too much food. In that case you will of course explode. Also new is a cinematic camera view for jousting, dieing and when you should make it somewhere without dieing. Before I get more into details here is a update video that gives you a quick look at the new stuff:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3jhuSELvLm4

Inventory:
The inventory is now always there for you to open when you are at the world map. Just click esc or B in the case of a gamepad. In it you can manage your bought or found power ups, choose a meal to carry on the back of your horse as track food or eat a meal immediately. Important here is to keep track on the fat stats. You don't want to kill yourself in the inventory by eating too much. That would be really embarrassing!

Sometimes there is just a giant burger in a treasure but that is not to say that a giant burger is cheap (it is worth more then 10k). There is still some space in the inventory for more stuff that can be added in the future.

Traders:
On the map you will now see trader symbols above the area tiles, those show you the type of trader/shop you will encounter when you manage to complete that area. For now there are 3 types: Power Ups, Food and Diamonds. They have 3 random items to offer that can also have random discounts or higher prices. In case of the diamonds trader it is just for selling your found diamonds because obviously you can not eat diamonds and despite a nice look they are useless when not exchanged for precious gold. You can also find treasures which contain a random item, gold or diamonds. Generally they are really worth it to go for.

You can now also zoom in the map.

Food:
You will starve fairly quickly now but luckily there is a lot of food to be found. You will find the most food in the easy areas while harder areas can have no food at all scattered around. But you can also buy food of traders that you can carry with you. One of it you can then carry on the back of your horse as a emergency snack when you are about to starve to death. Make sure to always keep an eye on the fat stats of your horse and knight in the inventory. You can also see how fat your characters are just by looking at their appearance. Keep in mind that all the meat is for the knight while that other stuff is for the horse. The different food adds also different amount of fat. The giant burger for instance adds 6 fat while a steak only 1 fat. While playing you will see that food, that would add too much fat, blinks red. Eat responsibly and Bon appétit!

The food is very excited. What will you choose?

Cinematic Views:
The cinematic views show you your success and of course your many failures from an all new angle. When jousting successfully the cinematic view will only happen when there is enough space, so when there is no obstacle or a gap that could bring a sudden end to your victory celebration. It also quickly fades out when you strafe or jump. If you should not like it you can also turn it off in the advanced options. When dieing it will just happen when the body of your rider will fly far enough so you can see it flying in all its devastating glory. Lastly don't be scared when the horse looks determined in the camera that is just his thing. :)

Everyone is happy here, packed with a giant burger and using the unicorn rainbow bridges power up. Later they fell and then drowned. So sad.

Achievements:
There are 12 new achievements, they involve Hitler, Kim Jong-un and Santa Claus. Well, I think you will figure it all out way too fast anyway.

Can you spot the prominents?

Other stuff:
- Added a intro! But it is only a first short version.
- The ghost rider power up has now been nerfed a little because it is so powerful. Now you slowly sink though the ground and when sunken too much you are gone but you can prevent that from happening simply by jumping to get up again.
- The second sight power up has now been changed quite a lot, it only activates when you are already very close to a obstacle but then the slowmo is slower and the strafing faster. That makes it more clear and less interrupting.
- The cannon power up now shows the size of the cannonball through the cannon getting fatter and everything close in front will be destroyed immediately when shooting.
- A very important fix is the shield power up death bug. When using a shield while a thunderbolt is hitting the ground somewhere it had always killed you. The metal of the shield and the electricity... no wait, I did not simulate that. It is fixed! :)
- Hat are now much easier to find but that is not to say that they are easy to find.

[Initial News]
I just uploaded the beta of update #5 to the "new-beta" branch for you to get your hands on! Since it introduces big changes to the rogue rider mode it will run for some days or even a week till it is all done and tweaked as the final Update #5.

To download the beta simply go in Library > right click Last Knight > Properties > Betas Tab > select "Beta-new". You can then also go back out of it there as you like.

It is the most important update yet, here is a quick rundown of the biggest changes:
- First version of the inventory
>With food, power ups and diamonds.

- Traders and treasures
>Added to the map and inventory screen, prices might still need more balancing

- Wide range of different food that prevents you from starving to death.
>Easy areas have them scattered around and you can get emergency food, that you can carry on the horse's back, through traders. Again, more balancing might be needed. Let me know if you starve too often or not at all. Here is a taste of it:

Knight food in motion: http://imgur.com/4wjLY7C

- Cinematic cameras
>For deaths, areas and levels finished and jousting when there is enough space. It might work not everywhere like it should. Let me know if it is annoying or in front of specific obstacles.

- Ghost power up less overpowered
>You now slowly seep through the ground as a ghost but you can simply go up again by jumping. Additionally you can not eat in the rogue rider mode as a ghost because obviously all the food falls through your belly.

The new achievements are still missing and not all fixes of this version have been tested yet. The traders are currently just silhouettes, since that is not important and quite a bit of work I keep that for next update. There is also just placeholder text for the food currently, if you have ideas let me know. The beta of Update #5 is only for PC since I still have 2 big issues to fix on the Mac version.

I created a thread here where you can post feedback: http://steamcommunity.com/app/262210/discussions/0/46476691341660233/

See ya!

Rogue Rider Edition Includes:

Key Features

  • OVER-THE-TOP JOUSTING! - Countless enemies had been shot, hacked and slashed in the history of games. Now it is time to ram a wooden lance in some gut, send your foes flying, and watch them bite the dust! Body parts ripping off, ragdoll horse physics, and destructive environments included.
  • A BEAUTIFUL BRUTAL WORLD – Dive into a magical fantasy world full of treasures and adventures! Don't be fooled by the cartoony looks: here, simply bumping into a silly wooden fence spells a sudden end to your hero's life. If you fancy dying in a more heroic way, how about getting swallowed by a giant toad, falling into a lava pit, exploding from eating too much turkey, getting impaled by a Hitler Snowman, or just getting lit on fire by a dragon!
  • BUCKETLOADS OF CONTENT – Divided into three major parts - the Story Mode, the Endless Journey Mode and the Rogue Rider Mode - this game has a lot to offer and there is always something new to accomplish, find, or unlock. Power-ups, characters, view modes, mutators, quests, game mode variations, randomly generated hats, you name it! Did you ever wish to be a skeleton king with a fancy wig riding over rainbows on a flower-pooping pink unicorn? It's all up to you in this game!
  • INSPIRED BY CRASH BANDICOOT – Good third-person platformers were always hard to find on PC, when consoles sport countless shining examples: the first Crash Bandicoot titles, Spyro, Ratchet & Clank, and Super Mario were all a big inspiration for Last Knight. This game kicks it up a notch with non-stop jousting action, no-health instant death, procedurally-generated worlds, as well as custom-crafted levels with Knightmare levels in-between. To top it off, the new Rogue Rider Mode pushes it all into a rogue-like direction, and if you don't like third-person view, try playing in first-person mode!

This game is actually suprisingly fun to play on the PC. While I understand it is a mobile port, the added content, improved graphics, and friendly Dev all make it worth while.

It is a nice casual game to pick up and play for 15-30 min during breaks.

One thing to watch out for though is how often the screen shakes. It shakes a lot to simulate riding a horse. Something I found to counter this shaking is to actually ride a real horse while playing the game. Works great.

Fantastic little game that develops a simple idea with a surprisingly good result: it's funny, addictive, challenging, with sense of humour, good sounds and graphics, different game modes, rogue-like endless runs, customizable heroes, crazy quests, etc.

It's in early access yet but I can't wait to see the final release. Besides, many interesting extra features might be added, it has enormous potential for that, and I hope the developer will add them sooner or later.

Excellent game. PLAY IT!

Really addictive game! Relies on the endless running genre where mobile games like Temple Run and Subway Surfers succeded in gaining millions of downloads. But this game adds a lot more than just running around and avoiding obstacles. It introduces Jousting which brings some action to the genre where the other games missed. The visuals are charming and even the evil characters/hellish environments have a peculiar charm in them. The soundtrack compliments this charm and the game overall will keep you smiling as you play it (Though it does have those frustrating moments which you experienced in other endless runners). The game does have decent variety as it offers a decent number of customizations and modifiers to play around with. Considering the low price point, this game should certainly come under your instant buy list.

Despite its technical hiccups and the odd menu design, Last Knight is still a fantastic romp through a vibrant medieval kingdom, with eye-popping visuals, incredible challenges, and just all-around fun. Last Knight is a fantastic looking game, and could potentially be a even more fun if it weren't so frustrating at times. It definitely doesn't need more options, but the ones that are already present need some tightening before I'd consider this game to be anything more than a showpiece. In any case, the production values are top-notch, especially for a game that comes at a such low price. If this is the future of endless runner games, then sign me up, because I'm on my way to buy a new pair of running shoes.
