This game has two redeeming qualities to it 1. small download size and 2. steam trading cards. Other then that the gameplay sucks, would it have killed the devolopers to focus a little more time on the fighting system and controls and a little less time on all the fanservice? Only reason people should own this game is if it was a gift or if steam paid you to play it.

A most welcomed game in a time where PC combat/arcade games are much needed. Simplistic in it's nature the game manages to charm it's players with it's character diversity and easy controls. Gamers might find themselves asking the question "How in the world do I cast super moves" in the beginning but will soon find out casting them is a piece of sweet cake that landed on their plate unknowingly. Without a multitude of options in the main menu the player is left to wonder "Where's the rest?" but that awkward sensation vanishes the moment you select one of the two options provided. There is a virtual manual provided by Steam as always for those who want to know everything before they fire up the game but it's as thin as paper and rightfully so considering the fact that the whole game is based on the movement keys, a weak attack, a medium attack, a strong one and a parry. The game leaves a fresh trail of "I want more" in it's wake and delivers on it's promise. If only there was more to it. As an anime fan myself I am left to wonder why exactly is the game so short. Finishing it you soon realise that the only replayability stands with trying the next character and so on so forth until you beat all the enemy characters with each one of the characters available and with the first 5 Free Steam trading cards in your inventory and a little chipping in on the side in the form of 20 and up to 30 pence price per card you soon come to realise that you got your badge and there's nothing left to do. That's not to say that the game hasn't got the X factor as with any other game of this genre, if you got someone to play with all the better. But at this low price I would say it's a must have for any pc gamer than enjoys this type of games. If I had to describe the game in one short sentence that would be:

"It's a well designed, captivating and exciting piece of art for as long as it lasts and well worth the price tag."

Vanguard Princess is a single player 2D fighter with easy to learn combos and an "interesting" cast of characters. It is a 2v2 style fighter in that you select a primary fighter and an assisting fighter, the majority of combinations are tied to the primary fighter with the secondary being controlled through a button bind which acts in the same manner as one of your attacks (weak/heavy, punch/kick etc.). This design element adds great value and unique gameplay as you can mix and match primary fighters with assist fighters to a variety of effects and combo potentials. The game does feel cheap by certain design choices (character/UI/mode wise), but considering it is an indie project with a very small development the value is outstanding albeit odd for this game as it offers quality graphics, balance and gameplay. Recommended for fighting game fans if you can get past the design choices.

While the visual style of the game is highly appealing, there are several glaring problems that make me feel this game wasn't quite worth the price tag. There is a troubling lack of an AI that will closely reflect your chosen difficulty level, and that won't often spam the same attacks, a VS mode that will let you play against an AI opponent of your choosing without having to play through the (rather difficult even on easy) story mode, or any type of normal controller support which the Steam description declares it has. The game also does not have any type of true fullscreen capability, and when fullscreen is selected in the options, the windowed version is stretched to fit your screen, leaving the title pane still visible above the game screen. The controller support can be fixed with key binding programs, and playing the game windowed is fine, but the AI breaks this game to the point where I honestly don't want to play it at all anymore.

- the game looks and feels like its locked to 10 fps (although I have no way of knowing for sure)

- the manual is a mess and was for the most part usless to me

- no resolution options

- the ai for the most is horrible and will attack you aimlessly

- no online

- No Steam overlay support

- no controller suport (although I have no Idea if this is a personal problem or not)

+ has a sort of pixel art anime thing going on, very easy on the eyes

+has a quite plentiful roster of fighters

+ has a very strait forward plot nothing spectacular but its not laughable

overall I think it had potential but very poorly executed

Honestly, it's good, but seriously it's difficult. Some combos are literally unbreakable and I can't do anything when some little girl grabs me, stuffs my face into the ground and gives me a split-second to get my face in the ground again.

This is the first review i've ever felt compelled to write for a game on Steam.

The store page claims this game has full controller support. It does not. Even the controller native to the operating system i use (you know the one) does not work with this game. When i start the game, i can only move the cursor to choose between one of two game modes one time, then i cannot move it again. Once i choose a mode, the character select cursor continually moves down. Using the controller stops the down movement, until i let go of it. Then it moves down some more. If i happen to actually be able to choose a fighter i wish to play, she just crouches on the stage and doesn't really fight, so much as crouch a whole lot, and get punched and kicked and things like that.

I tried changing the controller configuration, but the direction pad buttons, you know, the ones you use to move a character? They're greyed out. so i can't actually configure them, despite the settings options being there specifically to configure them.

So how is the actual game? I don't know. I can't play it. See the other, longer paragraphs to learn why.

The game is OK as a fighting game, but one big flaw: no support for directional pad on controllers. You have to use a 3rd party app like joy2key or xpadder if you want to use the d-pad instead of the joystick. I have tried with Xbox 360 controller, Logitech, and PS3, and if I can't play a fighting game with D-pad, I don't enjoy it.

  • Detailed, beautiful graphics
  • Attractive, visually distinct female cast
  • Fast, fluid gameplay
  • Gamepad support
  • Good music

  • Very steep learning curve, gameplay features poorly explained
  • Default gamepad controls are counterintuitive
  • Very limited game modes (story, versus)
  • Relatively small cast of characters

Vanguard Princess is a fast-paced 2D fighting game featuring an all female cast of characters, with a decent helping of fanservice (particularly if you have downloaded the director's cut.) The game lacks several features found in mainstream fighting games that would make it easier to pick up, examples being a tutorial mode or even a move list available during fights. The very fast stride of gameplay, while enjoyable in and of itself, only compounds the difficulties a newcomer will experience. The default gamepad controls are oddly set up, and I would personally recommend the first thing you do is adjust them to your liking.

Once you get past the initial difficulty the game is actually quite fun to play, and the graphics are bright, colorful, and pleasing to the eye. Each character has their own unique quirks and special attacks which adds a level of replay value. The story mode is nothing to write home about, with the characterization unfolding through a handful of dialogue boxes spread throughout the characters' stories. The game is relatively short, given the small cast of characters and lack of different gameplay modes.

Overall it's a fairly impressive, if not necessarily accessible, indie fighting game that is worth a look .

It's an excellent 2D fighting game. The fights went pretty fast and unless you know your character, it's hard to know what you are doing. However, once you mastered the controls of a character, fights became really intense where your reactivity is brought to its limits. Moreover, it's a trully beautiful games, using japanese manga style graphics (which I love). Musics, voices and sounds are also good and manage successfully to instaure a good atmosphere.
I must insist on the fact that it is a hard game, a VERY hard game, and it is really pleasant to see one which can resist you because those games are really rare nowadays. But, this statement is also a drawback as, in hard mode, the final boss is sincerely unbeatable (I only manage to beat him twice in more than 10 hours of playing). This is the main flaw of this game : its final boss is just going to drive you mad. I do not understand the interest of setting a boss like that, because, that character aside, there is really a good balance between the different fighters. But, Hilda, the final Boss, she is definitely broken. Of course the final boss is powerful, but it should not be that much. Fact is she can attack you from distance instantly and without any pause. She can also teleport when engage in hand-to-hand combat. So, I do not know how the IA of character is made, but she will keep spamming lasers and explosions without any delay from the other side of the arena, and if you manage to get close, most of time she will teleport instantly.
Appart from having hulk as a boss, playing Vanguard Princess is very refreashing and amusing. Combos are well thought, and the game has a good lifespan. An excellent game for a small price, I encourage you to buy and play it (I recommend you to play with a joypad because some techniques are very hard to make using keypad only).

8/10 according to me.

PS : if you want to see what the boss is really capable of, buy the DLC ;)

Make sure to map the controls if your playing with a keyboard, because you'll have no idea what you'll need to press in the beginning. Unless you have a controller.

Awesome to play with friends.
