About the Game

Ring Runner combines the fast-paced action of space combat with the rich story and skill variety of an RPG.

Trek across the universe in a 30 hour long story-driven campaign based on a companion Sci Fi novel, or challenge 6 scenarios alone, cooperatively, or competitively through local or online multiplayer.

Choose from 60 customizable hulls that act as templates for 400+ wildly-varied skills. Level layouts, backgrounds, and AI enemies are all procedurally generated, yielding billions of challenges.

Story

You awake from unelective brain surgery to find key memory centers of your brain missing. They've been replaced by Nero, your peanut-butter-craving neuro-Hud, who'll guide you through the universal super-highways known as The Rings. If you survive fiery trench runs, flail-swinging gladiators, and feuding trash moguls, you'll discover that you're a Sage, capable of rewriting the physical laws with your thoughts.

But beware The Extinguishers!

In the interests of universal order, The Consortium of the Inner Rings has slated the Sages for extinction, plunging the cosmos into a war with casualties measured in galaxies. You'll play a pivotal role in this terrible battle... if you can find out who you are.

I bought this game during a sale because it looked cool.

... I never knew I was buying one of the best games I've ever played.

Everything is top-notch... gameplay, graphics, storyline. I haven't played a game this immersive since the Escape Velocity series.

Stay the hell away if you want to have a life.

Just completed the campaign and must say this is a very well done game, solid 5/5 as my complains are trivial compared to the quality of everything else.

It does take a bit of investment to get into as the ships have A LOT of controls which is just plain confusing and disorienting until you get the hang of it, but the depth when you do is impressive.

The story is also surprisingly deep and well thought out (and long in a good way). The maps in each segment of the game are quite small with not a lot to do besides fight (you could say it is designed around pure tactics with no strategy) but that aspect is so well done that I wasn't bothered by it.

A complaint I do have is that restarting when dying in the campaign is often annoying because it sends you through the dialogue each time. There is an option to skip the dialogue, but it only skips a section, if there are multiple (with camera animations between), you have to wait until the next pops up to skip it, so it can take many seconds to retry (which might not sound like much but when you are on a difficult mission with lots of dying, it is quite frustrating). On top of that, the loading of each mission is quite slow, and something as simple as returning to the hanger to switch ships for trying another approach requires waiting for the loading again despite your ship being the only thing that changed.

I also experienced frustration many times with the turret deployables that cause friction as well as those that grab hold of your ship. These can cause you to get "stuck" in the middle of a huge swarm of opponents, putting you at nearly hopeless odds with very little you can do, so I think the presence of these "weapons" does more to detract than enhance the game, though with enough experience you would probably learn whatever subtle tricks are needed to avoid them.

Overall, though, very high quality, very well thought out, lots of depth, and plenty of fun to play, certainly a gem to have found.

I haven't played multiplayer but I would imagine it would work very well with the design of this game.

For anyone who loved EV Nova this game is the next step in the path of top down space shooter greatness. I love the controls, neautonian physics, and endless variations of weapons and abilities. I've been playing long enough to make my eyes bleed and I still have barely scratched the surface of what I'll be able to do with all these ships and abilities. Thanks Ring Runner for giving me something to work on in my spare time.

What a hidden gem this game is.

The game is a top-down space shooter with newton physics, meaning if you accelerate in one direction you will not stop until you turn around and apply thrust... or hit something, this makes the combat fun and fluid.

There are a ton of ship hulls available with about 300 or so abilities and weapons available so your creativity can run riot, a good amount of them are unlocked via the campaign but you can also research them using the in-game currency to unlock them earlier should you wish.

The campaign is immensely long and I loved it every bit of it, even if you try speed through the game it'll still take you about 15 hours, and that’s not even including the time for completing bonus objectives, mini-games or arcade events available.

Edit: The soundtrack is also freaking awesome.

10/10, would have bought at full price the day it was released if I'd have known about it then.
