Already played the campaign 20 times? Optimized your speed run strats for each room? Dying for new content? Well you're in luck, because we've pulled the level editor out of the beta branch, and it's ready for you to try!

It's not pretty... there's still some programmer art, and no mouse support yet. But it gets the job done. Our fearless vanguard of beta testers have already populated the custom levels collection with some fantastic gems, so even if you're not up for building a level yet, give them a try and be inspired.

What's new in version 1.1?

  • ADDED support for rebinding of gamepad controls
  • FIXED key bindings not being saved properly
  • FIXED many in-game and startup crash bugs
  • IMPROVED performance for rendering

Version 1.1 BETA, including Steam Workshop + Level Editor

Welcome to the first major update! We changed and added so many things, we figured it would be safer to keep this in a special beta branch until it's proven to be stable.

To access this version of the game, right click on Escape Goat 2 in your Steam library, then go to Properties, Betas, and enter the code "goatimusminimus" and hit Ok. Now select BETA from the dropdown, and the game will auto-update and should say "Escape Goat 2 [beta]" in your library.

New features

  • Added 'Mutators' menu option under Settings. Mutators are unlocked when you beat the game (any %). They will eventually be tied to individual accomplishments in the game, but for now they all unlock at once for testing purposes.
  • Speedrun tracks per-room times and shows you the total game time for your save.
  • Super Meat Goat shows you all your attempts at the room when you finally complete it.
  • Grim Darkness turns out the lights, forcing you to combine your memory of room layouts with careful use of the sheep & goat as lamps.
  • Unseen Doom hides enemies. Have fun guessing where the fireballs are going to come from!
  • Spectral Goat makes the goat invisible unless he's standing still or dashing. Precise platforming gets trickier!
  • Two new incredibly stupid cheats for getting past that one level that drives you crazy. You know, that one. We both know which level it is. Boy do I hate that level.

Steam Workshop

  • Create and share your own levels
  • Build a collection of custom levels and rate your favorites
  • Currently you can only edit single rooms, not whole campaigns. We'll figure out some solution for multi-room creations later.
  • There are lots of physics and gameplay glitches you will expose if you start combining gadgets in interesting ways (for example, the game can't yet cope with multiple mouse powerups).
  • Only keyboard supported for now; gamepad editing works if you know the buttons (from EG1); mouse + keyboard editing coming soon.

*** BEWARE ***

As we fix these things in the game engine, it might break your level. Any level you make in the beta version of the editor might become unusable in the final version! This is especially true for levels with machinery that relies on precise timing to operate.

Bug fixes

  • Crash when using certain mouse abilities one frame after spawning the mouse.
  • Occasional glitch when changing music tracks
  • Game running too fast when vsync is enabled in game but disabled in your video drivers, and aero is off
  • Some game crashes would not produce a debug log
  • In some scenarios the crash message could not be shown
  • Particular characters in the path to the game or the save files could cause a crash
  • Slight in-game timer accuracy problem when vsync was enabled
  • In some scenarios the game would run too slowly if vsync was enabled
  • Crashes could occur in obscure lighting configurations / after changing lighting settings


  • Overall graphics performance has been improved.
  • Improved performance when HDR is disabled.
  • Improved performance in stained glass rooms.
  • Performance statistics available in-game by pressing Shift-F4.
  • Open source acknowledgements and URLs added to credits
  • Edit '%AppData%\MagicalTimeBean\Escape Goat 2\DataDirectory.txt' to move EG2's save and configuration files out of the My Documents folder (to put them in your dropbox, for example).
  • Usability tweaks to the menus.

I played the first Escape Goat tons of times and this pretty much blows the first one out of the water. It adds a lot of new features while keeping some old ones, despite the new features being there for a few short levels. However there is a lot more to do in order to go through a lot of levels so there's more things to do rather than going through ten worlds and four extra worlds. There's a strange diffculty curve in some levels where you might spend ten minutes on one level figuring out what to do, then the next might take you two minutes. Either way the puzzles are interesting enough that you might even take some of them on in different ways, rather than going through what the game intends you to. The graphics are way better than the first, moving from pixel graphics to fancy drawn graphics and neat little idle animations. Soundtrack is also really amazing. If you liked the frist Escape Goat, you'll really love this sequel. If you haven't played the first, then I'd really recommend just moving onto this one, since there's nothing much to miss on the story.

Escape Goat is a more of the same really, but in a neater and bigger package. It has more levels, better graphics but not necessarily better puzzles. The rooms are small, and completing them should take you just a couple of minutes to complete, provided that you know exactly what to do. Thankfully there are a lof of them. Still, completing them all shouldn't take you much longer than a couple of hours. But because of its short length this game is always a pleasure to play and shouldn't frustrate anyone with overly long or annoying puzzles like many other games manage to do.
Recommended !

If you've played EG1, then EG2 is the logical sequel: it's bigger and shinier while keeping what worked with the original. The graphics, lighting and sound are great. Controls are very responsive (I used a 360 controller). New gameplay elements include a couple more superpower-hats for your sidekick. Generally I found the levels more varied and entertaining than the original game's.

Here's why I can't rate it a 5-star:

- while "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" applies to some extent, I'd have liked to see a couple more enemies added. The sawblades and the reapers are back, and that's it - apart from the snake-boss (whose levels I didn't enjoy, because they were too fiddly). How about some different classes of reapers, at the least?

- some of the levels are way too tricky, while most are plain sailing (can be done within a couple of tries). I wonder how many of those really tough levels were beta-tested? Because the timing required on some of them is outrageous. A couple involve your goat being stuck at the bottom of the screen on a platform which is decaying or otherwise moving out from under you. If you jump too soon, you die; if you hesitate, you fall and die; and, if you jump incorrectly (by not hitting a high-enough jump or by brushing against a tiny pixel) you are blocked from completing the jump (and then you fall and die). In desperation on those levels, I looked up how the YouTube experts did it, but replicating the same feat is another matter. I always say it with puzzlers: if you can see how something is meant to be done yet can't replicate it within an hour of trying, the game has failed. Or should be labelled: only for kids with catlike reflexes. :(

♥♥♥♥les aside, I had a blast with the majority of the game, "finishing" it in around 7hrs (87% completion, it says, but more than enough to get to the outro).

Excellent sequel. I LOVED the first Escape Goat, and this is just more of it, with better art and new game mechanics. Buy it and play it.

If you played Escape Goat 1 you're in for a real treat. I found the first game to be fun but much too easy for my tastes. EG2 has proven to have quite a bit more variety thus far. He has implemented a much better system for moving between levels so that if you get stuck you can easily pull up the map and go back to any room and level of your choosing--no more need to start rooms all the way over just to find that one puzzle again.

Escape Goat 1 wasn't much on story, that's part of its appeal for many, you won't find much here either but if you talk to all of the animals you'll find quite a bit more story to get into. I find myself excited to beat the next section of levels so that I can find out what will happen or be said next; the game does a good job at keeping me coming back for more.

The art is fantastic, I enjoy the attention to detail and the great new lighting engine adds quite a bit of depth to the feeling of the game. You'll find a great soundtrack within the game too.
