Status Update 16 April 2015

Hey hunters,

Welcome to our weekly status update, this time unusually real life focused.

On the matter of cheaters

Starting with a murky piece of news, we’ve recently been receiving quite a lot of reports about players who have been cheating by using hacks and other non-permitted practices. Each case was investigated individually and thoroughly and the player accounts that were found guilty have since been suspended. All banned players will be removed from leaderboards, so if you notice any change there, you’ll know why. It’s quite sad when people who have invested considerable amounts of time and money into the game, ruin it for themselves just to bag more animals or to win a competition. As you know, we have a zero-tolerance policy towards cheaters and think it’s unfair to players who have been playing honestly to leave culprits unpunished. If you notice someone whose hunt info looks suspicious (e.g. a lot of animals harvested in an extremely short time frame) please do not accuse people publicly in the forum or on social media channels, but instead contact our support manager David at and each case will be investigated. Thank you for your help on this!

German community meet-up

Now moving onto a cool real life event. Since the beginning of theHunter, our German-speaking community has been very active and passionate, and last weekend they took it a step farther by organizing the very first real life gathering. Twenty-two out of 79 members of the theHunter-Community “Die Jagdfreunde” (hunting friends) came from all over Germany, Switzerland and Austria to the small town of Rosenthal near Kassel, Germany, to meet each other IRL for the first time. One of the meet-up participants Pratze says: “It was just amazing to see all the faces of people we usually only know by their voice on TeamSpeak. We had lots of fun together, there was a lot of talking, laughing, barbecuing, drinking and, of course, anecdotes about theHunter.”

It’s been a big success, and Jagdfreunde are planning to have at least one gathering per year from now on. If you are a German player who wants to join this great community – get in touch with the them!

Here you see the picture of this fine crowd, the combined HS of all participants was 25383 and average 1208.7 – theHunter force is strong with German hunters in Rosenthal

I can add that we were thrilled to hear that theHunter brought them together and we made a small contribution to the event by sending them over some T-Shirts and em$ codes as a hi from EW!

EW gone shooting

Now onto another real life gathering, this time here, In Stockholm. Yesterday our significantly grown team (29 people right now, whoa!) went to shoot some guns. Although we were handling lethal weapons, surprisingly, everyone came back in one piece. The team had tons of fun (not as much as shooting guns in theHunter though, obviously). As our producer Hannes nostalgically said afterwards, shooting the .454 Casull was the closest to inner peace he have ever been.

We know that there are lot of fans of guns in our community, so we took some pictures for you (click to enlarge):

Hannes is reaching his peace…

… and the result of his efforts

We’re in the Movember Platinum Club!

In case you’ve already forgotten our Movember campaign, back in November we made a bunch of moustaches and donated 2$ for every sold piece to Movember foundation. Together with theHunter community we raised $3248 which not only made us top 5 contributors in Sweden but also, as we found out today, got us the entrance ticket to the Movember Platinum club. As a reward we’ll be receiving a coveted official Movember Soup Guard which is a special moustache spoon to protect a man’s moustache while eating soup.

This achievement belongs to you, our community, thank you once again! Unfortunately, we can not share the Soup Guard with everyone who helped us raise funds, but once it arrives at the office we’ll hang it up on theHunter trophy wall, and if you are by any chance in Stockholm, come by our office and we promise to borrow it to you for some classy soup eating

Finally, hopefully you haven’t missed our latest competition for the best reserve set-ups? You have a bit less than a day to take part in it to win some nice prizes and, which is even more important, to write your name into our first ever community e-book.

That’s if for today.

Happy hunting!

Status Update 9th April 2015

Hello hunters,

Hope you all had a nice Easter break and managed to get some trophies in our Easter event.

Here are some Easter event stats: as many as 2045 players got the first trophy for the Bunny Egg mission, 1689 – the second one for Protect The Motherburrows!, 1732 – the third one for What’s Best For The Colonies and 539 successfully completed the ultra mean Coyote mission. Well done hunters!

In case you missed it, last week theHunter: Primal escaped from Early Access and is now available on Steam as a one-time purchase. If hunting ferocious dinosaurs in a huge, stunning prehistoric world sounds like something you’d enjoy, you should check it out!

Now onto a slightly smaller but equally cool release, yesterday we brought out a sweet new 2-6x32mm slug scope for the community’s all-time favourite Pump Action Shotgun. It’s available now in the theHunter store and people keep telling us it’s pretty rad. Check out the sights on this screenshot from our community member Pittie:

This week we reached a very impressive milestone – 60 000 people liked our Facebook page, which tells us that you like what we do – big thanks for your support, it’s awesome to watch our fan base increasing with giant leaps. We’ve planned some wicked celebratory event this weekend, make sure to check our tomorrow updates or sign up for our newsletter.

We’ve also started working on the non-typical antlers for yet another species in theHunter (and it’s not a rabbit) and some other highly requested content.

Finally, today we’re thrilled to introduce two new members of the Expansive Worlds team, their names are Philipp and … Filip! (Yep, having two Daniels in the squad hasn’t created enough confusion.) On a serious note, the team is growing and we’re really excited about what it means for the future of theHunter and Expansive Worlds. Check the guys’ stories below and give them a warm welcome from the theHunter community.

Hello Hunters!

My name is Philipp Strecker and I’ve just joined theHunter team as a game designer.

I will be taking a closer look at your hunting patterns, crunching a lot of numbers and learning your feedback to further improve the things you already like and tweak the things you don’t like so much yet.

I have been working in the games industry for the past 5 years and just moved from Berlin to Stockholm to be a part of this outstanding family of players and developers.

In my spare time I like to play video games, football, watch movies, hunt my cat and try not to panic while cooking. Also, I am obsessed with sharks.

You can listen to some musical crimes of mine too – if you are brave enough.

I hope to see you on the hunt soon and talk to you on the forums!

I’m Filip, the single malt monster born and raised in Borlänge. I’m a 3D-artist and have just started my internship here at Expansive Worlds. I have always been in a creative environment, playing and singing in bands and throwing parties for friends and family. I feel that’s where I belong.

When I was in the fourth grade, I decided that I wanted to get into the gaming industry. As years passed, I realized that I can’t stay in Borlänge if I want to pursue my dream. So, now I am here in Stockholm. Partly because the game industry is located here, but also so that I could play my video games and spin some vinyls without getting told to go to sleep.

I love video games! Everything from Super Mario to Grand Theft Auto. When you play that game that you been waiting for and hyped up for for years, and it proves to be exactly the way you wanted it to be, that’s a feeling hard to beat!

I got my education at gamedev school Playgroundsquad in the Swedish city of Falun. If I wasn’t sure before, then I knew that creating games and 3D really was my thing.

I’m very happy to be a part of Expansive Worlds and to get the opportunity to work with theHunter!

See you out in the woods and happy hunting!

EDIT: People are actually defending this? Compare the amount of free content to the amount of content you have to pay for. It's unacceptable to make me pay money to access that much content in a free to play game.

It costs nothing to download, but I feel entitled to a refund.

First of all, there was no tutorial for this. I was just thrown in, and expected to know how to hunt. I wandered aimlessly for a while, until I found some tracks. I followed them, and found some more tracks and some scat. There was so much scat, that I began to wonder if this animal was sick. I followed the trail for about one in game hour unril I saw it: a whitetail deer. Living in an area with a lot of rednecks, I was excited. Apparently deer are something you should want to hunt. I readied my rifle, and clicked the fire button. Nothing. Was the left mouse button not the fire button? The right mouse button readied the gun, so I figured the left would fire. Then a message popped up: "You don't have the required license to hunt whitetail deer". What? I just spent almost forty real minutes tracking this thing down, only to not be allowed to shoot it. This is a video game! I shouldn't need to buy licenses to hunt animals! And, since this was my first time playing, wouldn't it be nice to give me some licenses for free, so I can get a feel for the game before investing money in it (it's free to play, so I shouldn't have to pay to play it)! I quit the game, went to the store, and looked up how much licenses cost, only to see something that really pissed me off. The licenses are temporary! Are you ♥♥♥♥ing ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ me!?

If you don't buy the licenses, this is just "Hiking Simulator". I live in an area full of hiking trails. I can literally drive five minutes, and find a hiking trail. I do not have a gun, hunting equipment, or hunting licenses. I played this so I could hunt. After playing this, I might as well just get all of those things, because it would be something I could make memories out of, actually go outside, and do with my friends.

Valve, I am begging you, set standards for what can and cannot be free to play. I am asking that either this game be removed from Steam, or you make the developers add free content. I am not going to pay to play a game that is listed as "free to play". I will pay for extras, but only if the game is good.

EDIT: Okay, so apparently I didn't notice that there is a tutorial. You people can stop commenting on it.

Some people are saying "well, it's a simulator". Simulators don't have to be one hundred percent realistic. The buying lisences part did not have to be in it, and made the "realism" (it's just a excuse to have microtransactions) too much.

Whats the point of making a game free to play if players are not allowed to enjoy full content.

This game looks like it has potential and is fun. However the 'Free-To-Play' label is misleading. After downloading the 2GB game I looked forward to shoot some helpless animals but, as soon-as I loading in the open world I had no idea what to do or get started. No controls or help menu was available in-game, so I had to resort to an online video on the internet.

After getting used to the main controls I ventured out to hunt… I found a trail of a Blacktail deer and ID’d it with my gadget. A pop-up appeared saying I need a licence or a membership to hunt this animal. I then looked up to see what I could kill. Apparently there are only 2 animals you can hunt and 1 weapon you can use in this F2P game.

I now know this Free-to-play is actuallya Fee To Play and Pay-To-Win game, with micro transactions, donations and memberships everywhere.

Sorry, but I looked forward to play this game and not Pay-To-Win… It has really good graphics quality though.

First of all - This title is fake!!!
Is not Free to Play.

If you are looking for a free to play hunting title i have to start this review with some bad news: this game is not free to play by most interpretations of the term "Free to play". As a limited member you can do the following:

You can enter all the reserves and wander around.
You receive one basic rifle, a scope and unlimited ammunition refills for that rifle. You will also receive a deer caller.
You can only hunt Cottontail rabbits and Mule Deers.
Hunting all other animals is prohibited!!. You can see them, but shooting them is not possible.
To shoot them you need to buy a license with real money
Unlike other free to play games you can make points to unlock new content like weapons and other stuff. You are stuck with what you have and that is it.

Want to hunt rabbits? Nope. Gotta grind some mule deer hunting missions before you get the cash to buy the ammo to shoot them rabbits. Found a boar? Or a fox? Or a duck? You're fresh out of luck. Cough out some cash for a license before you can shoot anything else.

Play to win my foot.

I noticed theHunter was free to play so thought I'd give it a go. This is how my experience went:

  • I load up the game and jump straight into the hunt! I familiarise myself with the controls and get ready to begin.

  • I hike through miles of woodland, meticulously scanning the area for my prey. These are my woods. I am the apex predator. A god among mindless furry beasts.

  • After what seems like hours, I see it. My prey. A 33.4kg female Mule deer. It hasn't seen me yet. My primal hunter instincts activate and I stealthily approach.

  • I zero in on the deer. My deer. My trophy. It is in my crosshairs, I hold my breath, ready to fire, I was born for this. Everything I had accomplished in life leading me here, to this very moment...

  • Balls! It suddenly spooks, and trys to run. I panic and let out a squeal, firing blindly. I see blood spraying everywhere. I had hit it, but the poor thing just keeps on running, trailing blood the whole way.

  • Still panicking, I chase after the deer, following the trail of its blood. After 10 mins I find it...

  • The deer, my deer, has collapsed from exhaustion in an alarmlingly large pool of it's own blood.

  • It's in so much pain.

  • It looks up at me.

  • It knows.

  • "Please, kill me." It tells me with its eyes.

  • Those eyes.

  • I start to cry.

  • I can't do it.

  • I walk away.

  • I uninstall the game.

  • I still have nightmares about the deer.

  • I start drinking heavily and consuming opiates to cope with the pain.

  • It helps me forget.

  • Life will never be the same.

10/10 would suffer from PTSD and ruin life again.

Combine this game with your TrackIR: It's like I'm really outside!

But seriously speaking, I used to play this game a bit before it was on Steam. If you actually pay for your subscription and buy some guns and ammo, it's a very fun, comfy hunting game. If not, then you're ♥♥♥♥ outta luck. Don't believe the 'free to play' advertisement, this is subscription based game through and through.

I'm still gonna recommend the core game itself since it's enjoyable if you jump through the hoops. I'd still rather just pay for a full game for $30 or something, though.

Its a damn good game, but they made the "mistake" of putting it up on F2P. Its really a subcription based game then pay more for ♥♥♥♥ that isn't bad then play the game. Try it out, see how good it could have been. Then get rid of the money trap before you pay $100 to be able to even try to play the game for a fw months.
