Status Update - 27th April 2016

Howdy hunters,

Here is our weekly status update, including what we’ve been up to at Expansive Worlds.

Sneakathon 2016

So, yesterday we launched a new hunting event which we’re planning to run every year – Sneakathon 2016. We combined a couple of tough challenges, featuring some of our most spooky species, into a set of missions for all non-competitive souls as well as a final Roe Deer competition. The feedback for the event has been very positive so far, which makes us happy campers. To help you out in the Sneakathon, we reduced the price on all Sneaky 3D clothes by 50%, which is even cheaper than our regular bundles. In the spirit of sneakiness, there’s also a brand new fall leaf camo variation of our favourite Ghillie suit, designed by Gostwind in our 2014 outfit competition!

Player Survey

Here’s a reminder that the player survey we launched last week is running until the end of this week. The number of entries so far has been overwhelmingly high, but we’re still missing a couple of thousand opinions. Your opinion counts, so please take the opportunity to share it with us. You only have one opportunity per year, and we’re looking forward to discovering the results.

Lock&Learn – Deer Diary

As you may remember, two weeks ago we started a regular live-streaming project, Lock & Learn. Our community intern Johanna is learning the ropes of theHunter and sharing her journey with everyone in weekly Twitch streams. Without question, theHunter is a challenging game with a rather steep learning curve, which can be overwhelming for new players, so with this project we wanted to show (in an entertaining way) how one takes their first steps in the game, learns from their mistakes and evolves into a bad-ass hunter. Johanna has already completed two streams, you can catch a recap of her first episode, The Moose Karma, here, and here is the recap of her second one, Deer Diary – watch it carefully and enjoy it thoroughly 😉

Video

Unfortunately there will be no stream today, but next week Johanna will be joined by our veteran hunter ForstHeld, and a little birdie told me they will take to the fields of Hirschfelden where Forst will give Johanna some Red Fox hunting lessons. Anyway, hope to see you on next Thursday at 16:00 CEST on Expansive Worlds’ Twitch channel.

Next week’s free species

We are continuing our experiment with free species rotation, and tomorrow Brown Bear and Moose will become premium again, while Alpine Ibex and Wild Boar will be free to hunt for the next 7 days. From next week onward the free species rotation will occur from Thursday to Thursday.

Team news

And now on to some team news. In the last few months, theHunter squad has undergone many changes. A bunch of people have left us and many more have joined. So, today we’re saying goodbye to our awesome animator Hampus, who has been with us for three years and has done some amazing work. The best of the best including the ibex fighting and labrador retriever animations. Good luck Hampus, you’ll be missed!

No goodbyes without hellos, and today we’re also welcoming a new member into the theHunter family. His name is Kristoffer and he’ll be working with us in the capacity of tools programmer, a completely new role for Expansive Worlds. Kristoffer’s work will be happening deep down behind the scenes, as he’ll be optimizing our engine tools to make the jobs of our programmers, artists and designers more efficient. Read Kristoffer’s intro below and say hello to him, although you won’t feel the direct impact of his work, what he does is extremely important and had a significant impact on the end result.

Hello there!

My name is Kristoffer Bergman and I’ve just joined Expansive Worlds as a Junior Tools Programmer.

I come from a small village near Lund in Skåne and just recently moved to Stockholm. At the age of 16 I made my first “game”: a console based “Hangman” in Java that I made during summer vacation, and seeing my brothers play around with it and having fun just felt amazing. The “I made this, they like it, they are happy because of me” feeling was absolutely addicting, so naturally I was gonna spend the rest of my life at my computer, programming.

Fortunately for me, this didn’t come with a particularly big life change. Spending unhealthy amount of time by the computer has for a very long time been a big part of my life, and I have been playing video games ever since I got my first Gameboy Colour.

Until I found a job to have as an excuse for programming 24/7, my path was unclear. During my early school years, I was the go-to-guy before any math or natural science test to explain things, and I ended up really enjoying to help people understand how stuff works. I love programming just as much as helping people, so I dreamt of becoming a teacher as well as becoming a programmer.

Then I found The Game Assembly, which had a program in Game Programming. I didn’t even realise that “Game Programmer” was an actual job. When I got in, my dream of becoming a programmer was about to be fulfilled. The only downside was that this meant I wasn’t gonna become a teacher and help people. However, one day at one of our school projects, the content creators were annoyed because their tools weren’t working. I helped them solve it and ever since then I know that til the day I die, this is what I want to do.

We are finishing this status update with a short video about our parent company, Avalanche Studios, in which some members of the Expansive Words’ team have been spotted. I thought it would be interesting for you guys to see where we work and put some faces to names of those who work on the game, and who you (hopefully!) love Enjoy!

Happy hunting!

Don't be fooled, this is pay to play, not free to play.

The game looks really really good
You have to walk enough that at some point it feels like a walking simulator

Most of the time you will only find things you are not allowed to kill tho.

i think this game can be real good for some people. but for others who can't afford to pày the memberships, you are quite limited, ingame cash can't buy much really, it's kinda sad that all the good content of the game is behind a huge paywall.

For real this game could earn the same amount of cash or even more if they left the licences as some sort of experience skilltree stuff and set hats and cosmetics for real money, like most other free to play games are

but yeah, its fun for a bit, just i would really really rather that licences could be unlocked by leveling up or tracking the animals for long enough, or doing super hard things like getting instant kills, instead of having to be paid with real money.
nonetheless, its a nice game

Thats f*cking it! I'm going to write a review.. This is my first review and probably my last because if I write a review, trust me I'm ♥♥♥♥♥♥ off as hell! And hell, am I ♥♥♥♥♥♥ of now!

As you can see I played 700+ hours in this game and long story short, i DO NOT RECOMMEND this game to anyone. Believe me the game is worth paying money for, it’s WORTH IT’S MONTHLY prescription and please if you are here to play the game for free just turn around the way you came, this is not for you. It is only free to play as a DEMO, you get extremely limited options and playability. If you want to put money in this game it is definitely worth it IF NOT FOR;

1) The lack of multiplayer compatibility; (300 servers and only 5 you can connect to due to “could not connect to host”, “host has quit the game”(server still in server list 30 mins after the host quit the game already), “lost connection to host”, server of my buddy up and running (TeamSpeak confirmed) and not in server list for about 45 mins, “error 16005” “I GOT IT”, “error 404 developer’s f*cks not found”
2) Abundant bugs (which NEVER EVER GET FIXED) and I’m not talking about the bugs previously discussed as connection bugs, I’m talking about bugs of getting stuck in scenery, floating ducks that stay stuck in the air (due to connection error again though), animals stuck behind trees and rocks, animals that have died on player side but not harvestable because of server misalignment,…,.., and the list keeps going and going
3) The developers don’t give a f*ck *(this is the most important part for my experience); They keep hiring new people with great new ideas about a new species like the “polar bear” (which you’re not allowed to f*cking shoot!, PUT YOUR DEVELOPING TIME IN SOMETHING USEFULL YOU IDIOT DEVELOPERS), persistent problems with connections which have been an issue and have been addressed numerous times by the community but have been left aside because getting new weapons and new animals is more profitable, priority is giving above all to getting a new skin on a new weapon which costs you another 5$ because the colour has changed on the weapon or because the colour of the animals has changed.
4) The game is not even near a complete stage, with its developers building on a broken game and making it more unplayable than it already is. They keep adding sh*t without fixing previous errors and by doing so they make the implementation of anything REALY worth it get drowned by the everlasting errors and bugs that follow it. The implementation of something good is followed by weeks, if not months, of issues resolving from this add-on and by getting the public back to the game the implement something new, which starts the hole sh*t train from the beginning.

If you have not already turned around and decided not to look at this game, I tell you again, DO NOT BUY THIS GAME OR PUT MONEY IN TO IT IN IT’S CURRENT STATE. I don’t think this current state is going to change to anything good in the foreseeable future as the developers just don’t give a f*ck or are trying but are so inexperienced that my 6yo niece can make a better running game. This game has potential but it should have been a Steam GreenLight game and not a finished one and the enormous ego that makes the developers not think about gameplay but all about money made me vote this game as DO NOT RECOMMEND.

I hope to god that the developers are reading my review and start working on the issues that need to be fixed to make this game worth it. If they are not, be wary of my next review, as I will be even more ♥♥♥♥♥♥ off as I keep playing this game in the hope it becomes something it should be.

(PS: this review was 16 pages long but I removed a lot of the swearing, reducing it to 2. If you read this all please rate funny or helpful in the hope it reaches the developers of Expensive Worlds)

i want to play this but they need to change there pay to play strategy. they need to add a base price that dosent expire and where i can earn items. id pay $40 to be able to have a base playable game with friend(you cant play multiplayer unless someone is a paying monthly customer). its done to feel like a cash grab and its only for the rich. you can easly pump hundreds of $$$ into this game and probly $1000 if you have it and it still asks for a monthly fee. is this the way gaming is gona go? thanks to people who buy there way through games like farcry(paying real $$$ to get weapons and advance instead of earning it by playing through the game) companies have found this to be a way of doing business and its robbing people blind. if we stop buying it they will stop doing it.

Yes, if you don't have a membership you have to buy licences. At most the membership is like $3.50 a month and you get all the licences. Not really much to gripe about there. Good game, well worth the money.

This is easily the best hunting game around. It isnt free to play entirely, but even with a free account you can have fun. People giving negetive reviews obviously are newbies who can't find the animals they're allowed to hunt. Just because the game involves a bit of a learning curve seems to put off most people, but its a good game if you spend $17 getting the Wayfarer bundle.

This is hands down the most realistic hunting simulator available today. It's not easy and it's not cheap. But nothing even comes close in the hunting game genre. Yeah, it gets negative reviews from people who either have no clue about hunting or can’t afford the game. But it's an awesome game if you like to hunt or think that you’d like to hunt. The landscapes are immense, detailed, and very realistic. Each of the many maps is a work of art. The sounds are realistic and captivating. I wish it weren’t so expensive to play and maintain membership. But, once you have all of your favorite gear, the membership fee really isn’t too bad considering what I’ve already said ^^. If there were something better for less I'd definitely be interested. But I've looked and there isn't. So until then this is my hunting game of choice. It's free to try so why not try it and see what makes this the best hunting simulator available today.

This game is very decent indeed. Most of the negative comments are related to the "pay to play" idea of the game.
If you look at it like me and try the free version, have a look, hunt some deer, then it will cost you nothing. If you like it then it's worth paying for a trailrunner membership, it gives you 12 months of unlimited hunting, with extra weapons, towers, callers etc. It's well worth it and the cost is similar to other full priced steam games.

One thing to note.

Don't buy and run this through steam, it's riddled with problems. I'm in a group of about a dozen players and the steam version won't run on half of our computers.
For example, it won't run on my pc or my partners laptop, but it runs on her desktop pc!

Much better to download the client direct from TheHunter.com and install and run from there.

Another problem with the steam version is if you buy dlc from steam and not the hunter, it's rife with problems.

My partner bought a trailrunner membership as dlc from steam and it was applied to my account, not hers.
Steam say it's a problem with the game developers and to contact them to sort it out.
Messages have been going back and forth to the hunter support for over a week and it's still no closer to getting resolved.
Support are being awkward and obstructive and, in my opinion, deliberately stupid, in the hope that we will just forget about it.
As it happens my partner has downloaded the client direct and paid for her membership, again, directly on there, which went through fine. As far as me getting the extra membership it really doesn't matter that much, I'd have paid for it when mine expired anyway and it's worth paying a little bit extra for the full trailrunner membership again because you get extra towers, an extra tent and an extra tree stand.
My problem is they won't admit they have made a ♥♥♥♥ up!

Another problem is if you use a different card, to buy in game em$, which are used to buy extra weapons and gear, then Paymentwall, the company that processes the transactions, will flag it up as fraudulent and freeze your account!
You can still play the game but can't buy any more items!
Paymentwall returned my step sons payment on my account and insist on a screenshot of the transaction on his online banking. As it was refused by paymentwall it's not showing on his online statement!
The result is a stalemate, where my account is permanently frozen!
Absolutely stupid and self destructive to the game developer!

If you take all these things into account, just use one card to buy your stuff, then you will love this game!
It plays and runs like a dream, even on older machines,a nd looks very pretty.

Just don't expect any help from the support!

Awesome SIMULATION! If you love hunting you will love this. I read all the bad reviews about the game. Everyone complaining about needing a license. Yes, you need a to buy dc in order to get all the features of the game. You can still hunt whitetail, pheasant and rabbit for free. If you're wanting a cabelas type hunting game... This is not for you! Far more advanced and realistic.

I would like to make one thing about this review very clear, it is mostly my OPINION here and unless otherwise stated does not contain many facts.
1. It REQUIRES patiance, if you go in guns blazing and running around like a chicken with it's head cut off your not going to have a good time.
2. The community is mostly great with a few bad apples here and there, but if your nice and respectful to other players most will help you learn to play.
3. This is the closest thing to a hunting simulator as of this review, so if your looking to shoot the biggest buck in the game only a couple hours in, then you had better go somewhere else.
4. If you really, REALLY, want to play this game and play it a lot, than you going to end up spending money on it. How much you spend is up to you, I personally think the prices they ask for ingame items are very reasonable. One package comes with over 10 weapons and a years worth of membership for around $50. Plus even after your membership expires you keep the guns, and just the membership is around $30 for 12 months.
5. If your willing to put in the time to learn how to play, then it is a very rewarding game. even after 270+ hours I still am learning things about the game. I recommend it to anyone who has some patiance and likes games where skill matters and shows. But if your looking for Cod like action then don't waste your time.

As of me typing out this review i have been playing for 3 weeks and i have to say the devs of this game have come a long way and yes the there might be a few bugs here and there the devs work their butts off to fix them as fast as they can.
In this review i would like to pint out a few things
(1) Yes you do need to pay money to actually be able to hunt the majority of the species but i would like to point out that in order to hunt in real life you need to buy a license as well.
(2) Just like in real life hunting you need to take your time and be patient in order to drop that big buck or bull you might have been tracking. In no way shape or form will you just get that big buck or moose in the first few minutes of you joining a server. This game focuses on developing skills such as spotting and tracking and the more these skills are developed ingame the more proficient you become as a hunter just like you would IRL.
(3) This game will appeal more to those who truely respect and/or love for the great outdoors. So therefore if you treat this game as a real life hunt you wont even notice you are actually playing a game.

overall thoughts on this game:fantastic simulator that should be given a score of 10/10

Its actually a good entertaining game if you put some money into it. I enjoy playing the game, but it is impossible to play without paying for the license and equipment. If you don't want to spend 30-40 bucks on this game, don't play it. Multiplayer is fine. The game is fun to play. Blah blah.

In short, play it if you want to spend some money; don't if you're a cheap ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.
