What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Bombernauts started off as a rough prototype posted to the web in 2013. The community was very important in the early development of the game, and adding people's suggestions was really fun. We'd like to end the development of the game the same way, and get the community involved once again.

Also it's our first multiplayer game, and we want to make sure it's as bug-free and balanced as possible before release.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“"About 6 Months". But it could go longer, and probably will. So more accurately would just be, "Until it's done". We're going to be taking suggestions and seeing demand for stuff while it's in early access, so if there's a lot of demand for a feature we didn't expect, it could take longer. It's also really notoriously difficult to actually estimate how long game development stuff will take. We originally thought the game would be out in 2014. Ha.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The UI needs an overhaul, and with that will come easier options for game customization. The level editor could use some touching up as well. There's also a walrus referee character we haven't added yet, and some story/setting related stuff to flesh out the game world a bit more. Plus some more game modes and powerups and some stuff for more flexible custom game support. We also want some more cosmetic settings for robots like hats and alternate wheels and stuff. Plus, whatever else people are wanting during its stay in early access.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Bombernauts is fully playable right now, and around 80% the way to a "version 1" official release.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“While in early access, purchasing Bombernauts gets you an extra copy to share with a friend.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We're going to be taking suggestions from the community for new powerups, game modes, cosmetic items, customization options, achievements, game balance, and more. See the steam community forums for more specific information on how you can help!”

STEAM WORKSHOP UPDATE!

Well... that took longer than expected! This was supposed to be the "February" update but a series of unplanned real-life-related hurdles ended up making it take a bit longer. No worries! We made the patch extra awesome to make up for it! Anyway here's the patch you've all been waiting patiently for:

BOMBERNAUTS UPDATE 0.15.0, THE WORKSHOP UPDATE

STEAM WORKSHOP SUPPORT
  • Added Steam Workshop support for custom maps! See here for instructions.
  • Custom maps now store the author of the map (For existing maps you will need to open them in the editor and re-save to get your author data saved in)
  • Added "custom map folder" to the create game panel to let you make map sets
  • Added author data for all the default maps

NEW CONTENT
  • Added a new powerup (regular pinata): The Fire Barrel! Kinda looks like a makeshift rocket engine doesn't it?
  • Added a new powerup (golden pinata): Bun Bun! Nobunny crosses Bun Bun...

GAME/BALANCE CHANGES
  • Offscreen indicators now open up to show a camera view of players you have last-hit with a bomb. This is basically a kill cam, so you can always see who you kill even if they are offscreen
  • Player you have last-hit with a bomb now have a highlighted smoke trail
  • Increased the stun-scale when spamming bombs slightly
  • Stun-scale now applies to explosions too (up to 100% extra stun on yourself when you are spamming bombs, from all force sources) (this will not kick in until spamming > 2 bombs per second)
  • Pinatas will no longer spawn until at least 1 player has spawned
  • Stun is now capped to 5 seconds maximum while you are on the ground (no cap while you're in the air)
  • The lava now stops you if you whiff a lucha slam

SINGS
  • Added 2 new chat commands, "-sing" and "-fancysing". These can be used by anyone as customizable taunts. You are allowed to sing once every 120 seconds, however this timer gets reset if you get a kill. See below the patch notes for more info on how the sing commands work!

SOUNDS
  • Default setting for music and sfx volume is now a lot lower (this will only effect new players or playing the game on a new computer)
  • Fixed an issue with sound effects where some sounds being played at a lower pitch would cut off too soon (this noticablly affects fire tiles, and fixes a few pops and clicks elsewhere)
  • Added sound effects for players joining and leaving
  • Added sound effects for getting a kill and respawning
  • Added a real sound effect for the EMP
  • Added a whoosh sound effect to players when traveling at high speed

GRAPHICS
  • Fixed bat swipes using the old unity tons-of-polygons-quad
  • Fixed a few powerup graphics self-shadowing when they shouldnt have
  • Fixed the 1 pixel white line on the bottom of the scoreboard in some resolutions
  • Block rubble now gets shadowed
  • Fixed the bouncy block spring sometimes not showing up over the correct bouncy block
  • Fixed rocket graphics overriding some other powerups graphics when it launches
  • Oiled up the steroid arms
  • Black hole bomb's particles now more accurately reflect the range of its force

PERFORMANCE OPTIMIZATIONS
  • Reworked the layout of the tilemap textures to reduce RAM and disk usage.
  • Optimized the file size of a number of assets to reduce RAM and disk usage.

GAME FIXES
  • Fixed larger bombs not spawning in the correct location
  • Fixed minor issue with shuffling RNG (used for powerups)
  • Fixed an issue where bomb-player collision wasn't registering unless a player threw a bomb in the past second OR got hit twice in a row with bombs
  • Fixed double respawning if you get a double kill as a ghost
  • Fixed larger bombs not being effected by ice, mud, or springs
  • Added additional error handling and logging in the server code. Please send me a debug log if you were host and another player couldn't connect after being lagged out.
  • Fixed an issue with LeadBomb+Wrecking Ball+any splitting powerup that could orbit you sometimes

EDITOR/CUSTOM MAP FIXES
  • Fixed map editor being able to sometimes place extra blocks while trying to save a map
  • Fixed an issue in the editor where it would sometimes not save a level (and subsequently break the save dialog)
  • Fixed an issue in the editor where double-saving a file would mess up the path in the save file dialog
  • Added additional error handling to the editor load/save file dialog (should be no more breaking with a messed up path)
  • Custom map sets will now ignore empty folders (you do not need the seasonal folders anymore if you don't want any seasonal levels. Just neutral is fine.)
  • The default built-in custom maps folder has been renamed from "default" to "sample" (because the default setting is now "all sets", which would be confusing) (this effects new installs of the game only)
  • The game will now avoid loading bad custom map data* (too large, too small, wrong filesize for dimensions, wrong file extension) and will hide any "empty" map sets from the list of available map sets.
    *note that this is not actually checking the contents of the map, such as making sure tile values are correct and levels have spawns, so it is still possible to make garbage maps that pass the test. I'm not looking for bug reports related to those, just ones that crash the game or cause it to seizure out when loading.
  • Fixed the game seizuring if it failed to find a custom map

HOW THE SING COMMANDS WORK
First of all, in sandbox mode there are no limitations or cooldowns songs, so this is the mode you should be in to test these! In a real game, these commands have a 120s cooldown, and can't be longer than 10 seconds or have more than 100 notes.
Try these 2 sample commands first:
-sing {4,2,0,2,4,4,4,x,2,2,2,x,4,7,7,x,4,2,0,2,4,4,4,4,2,2,4,2,0}
-fancysing {(1,0,500),(0,2,250),(1,-2,400),(2,0,1000),(1,3,500),(0,2,250),(1,-2,400),(2,0,1000)}
-fancysing {(0, 3, 0)(0, 8, 150)(0, 3, 0)(0, 8, 150)(0, 3, 0)(0, 8, 150)(0, 3, 0)(0, 8, 150)(1, 1, 0)(1, 6, 300)(1, 1, 0)(1, 6, 300)(1, -2, 0)(1, 3, 300)(1, -2, 0)(1, 3, 300)(3, 1, 0)(3, 6, 300)}

"-sing" is a list of pitches (with 0 being C3). Valid ranges for pitches are -40 to 40, with an "x" indicating a rest. Each note lasts for a quarter second. Simple songs are very easy to make with this command, however if you want better control over timings you'll want to use the fancysing command

"-fancysing" is a list of sets of 3 numbers, each representing 1 note. The format is (sound, pitch, delay). Sound is 0-4, with each number representng a different sound clip to use. Currently it's 5 different "la" sounds, however we may add more in the future. Pitch is the same as in "-sing", however "x" as a rest is not enabled here (just use a delay on the previous note, or a pitch outside the valid range). "Delay" is how many milliseconds to wait before playing the next pitch. You can use 0ms delay to play notes at the same time for chords.

In both commands, the commas and parenthesis are optional, however if you use spaces to separate things the note list should surrounded in brackets {} or quotes ""

I expect people to create and share all sorts of crazy sings they come up with. Eventually I will integrate this into the game better so people can save them and play them automatically as a taunt without having to paste stuff into the chat, but for now this is pretty fun as is.

(Special thanks to Sven Bergström and Andreas Jörgensen for helping with the patch)

A ton of fun with friends, but without anyone to play it with there's no reason to own it. Some type of single player or anything would be very beneficial to the game

This is one really fun and addicting little gem of a bomberman-lookalike.
I had some incredibly fun rounds so far and am impressed how dead it is in terms of players.
This Game needs a serious revival through youtube or something.
I would really recommend this to everybody who like crazy, hard-to-calculate Party-Games.

Bombernauts

Note: A key for this game was provided by the developer for the purpose of writing an unbiased informative review. No other compensation was given.

Introduction
==========
Bombernauts is a online multiplayer arena game with fully destructible voxel terrain. Think Bomberman, only a lot more fun; Your character is a little buggy-man thing, armed with tons of bombs and a baseball bat. Bombernauts is an incredibly fun game with friends, but therein lies it's largest problem: the playerbase is currently non-existant. While this isn't the game's fault, as the game itself is solid with a great concept and little to no bugs, it currently does not have any singleplayer or bot options for players to mess around with while they wait for other players to battle. However the devs are currently working on adding these features, so we should see the playerbase rise considerably after these are implimented. Now let's take a look at the game itself.

Gameplay
==========
Remember Bomberman? Well, this game is Bomberman without the grid layout on it's maps. You control a small 3-wheeled buggy-man-thing (let's just call it a buggy), that's armed with an infinite supply of bombs and a baseball bat. You can play against up to 16 other players (4 is the recommended number), where the objective is to blow them all up! Sounds simple, but it is insanely fun. You throw bombs in an arc, and you can aim how far your throw will be. Bombs explode a couple of seconds after landing, and if you hold off before tossing them while aiming, it'll cause a larger explosion...sort of like powering them up. The baseball bat can be used in a pinch to knock enemy bombs away from you, even before they land! Batter up!

At times, a small drone carrying a pinata will appear. If you bust up this pinata with your bat, it will drop a random powerup. These powerups are very numerous and do a variety of things, but usually only last for 1 bomb throw. For example there is one that lets you throw a cluster of bombs at once. When this explodes, it shoots many smaller bombs out, which then explode as well. Another powerup gives you a temporary jetpack, which improves your mobility greatly. There are a few referential powerups too, that give nods to various things. One great example of this is a powerup that gives you Dragon Ball Z Super Saiyan hair, and allows you to throw what I believe to be a Spirit Bomb!

There are many, many different maps that are rotated between each match. Every map is fully destructable, even if some parts take more powerful bombs to destroy them. There is also a map editor which you can use to create your own maps. I haven't tried it out yet because I have trouble designing decent maps or creations using toolkits for games, and sometimes the controls are a bit weird. But it's a great addition.

Right now the game is multiplayer/co-op only, but as I mentioned before finding people to play with is a bit of an issue. If you want to play against others, it's recommended to get a 4 pack and give the extras to your friends who want to play, or host a game and hope others join, or advertise it on the game's forum.

Graphics
==========
Bombernauts is fairly simplistic, but the visuals are very crisp and look nice. The maps consist of mostly cubes and structures built from them, which can be blown up as much as you please. Some parts of each map react to explosions differently; for example some will catch fire after an explosion and turn to ashy blocks which crumble when touched.

Your player character is a little buggy thing on 3 wheels with goofy eyes. These look pretty comical and adds to the charm of the game. Each buggy can be fully customized with many color, eye, and wheel options.

Explosions look great. While not realistic with flames going everywhere, they are instead a shower of vibrant stars and smoke which fit the game's comical theme very nicely.

Sound and Music
==========
The bomb sounds effects are extremely satisfying. They work very well, and mesh well with the visual effects. The music is simplistic like the graphics, but it gives the game a light competitive feel, which helps as this is a competitive game at its core. It's pretty much the same tune repeated all the time, but you never really get tired of it.

I feel like the game could use a little more work in this area. Possibly a few new tunes and some more unique sound effects. What they have now is good, but it can only get better with a little time and effort!

Performance
==========
I had zero issues with Bombernauts. It ran very smoothly with a great framerate of 45-60FPS. I recommend a controller, as the keyboard controls can be more of a hindrance than help. The game loads up pretty fast, enabling you to get into the action quickly. I didn't see any random crashes, so that's a plus.

Final Thoughts
==========
With a little more work and exposure, Bombernauts could be a great multiplayer title. Bombs and powerups everywhere only add to the fun and mayhem of each game. With plenty of maps to play on, as well as a map creator, there is literally no end to the fun this game could bring. Recommended if you are looking for a game to play with friends!

Bombernauts is a fun and hard explosive online multiplayer game, where you run around like a modified grill jumping around, throwing bombs and hitting other playesr with a baseball bat.

You can relate this game too bomberman, the oldschool classic game, and add a harder diffculty with a smile on your lips when you wipe people out. The game can be played either on keyboard or controller. According to controller it works perfectly with inputmapper and a PS4 controller for those who own one. I would reccommend a controller since it just fits right in. (Don't get me wrong)

If you like a similiar idea of the oldschool bomberman, with modified grills jumping around, then this game is for you.

Should you buy Bombernauts?

Simple answer, if you have friends, yes.

If you want to watch this review in video form, click Here.

Bombernauts brings a unique and exciting twist to the "Bomberman" genre, with over a dozen power ups, 100 maps, map creation, bomber customization and retro like music, Bombernauts does not dissapoint. For the sake of simplicity, here are the pros and cons.

Pros:
  • Simple but effective
  • Mass amount of maps + Map creation
  • Huge destructive maps (Better levolution than BF4)
  • Bomber customization
  • Good Music
  • Runs perfectly
  • Non-stop shenanigans

Cons:
  • Only 1 game mode
  • You need friends (buy that 4 pack)
  • Probably only 4-10 hours of replayability currently
  • Doesn't have enough hats (yet)
  • Doesn't have steam workshop integration for maps (yet)

In conclusion I would reccomend this game to almost any group of friends, an example of how fun this game is with friends can be found here.

I highly reccomend this, and since it's cheap in early access, it's a must buy.

For me personally, Bombernauts is the pinnacle of quick casual multiplayer mayhem.
It is amazingly well balanced and still random enough for absurd things to happen which make you either want to cry and punch your monitor to dust or praise the RNG dogs for an insane recover from a desperate situation.

As of now (Sep. 2015) this game is in "Early Access", but with the original idea of "Early Access" in mind:
This game is ALREADY A FULL GAME and not some PoC. Every major update, which happens to roll out each month afaik, can only make this REALLY GOOD GAME EVEN BETTER! Im not kidding; They could release it now and it would be great!

Sure enough you will need to have a few specific gaming preferences to enjoy this:
It is an entertaining, casual, quick round, absolute mayhem, multiplayer indie game.
No ranks, no itemshops only fun for you and a few friends maybe some strangers...

Oh btw: It has a level editor = endless user generated content if you want to YAY

Had a lot of fun on the Saturday special playing one of the devs, learning about the many powerups /bomb types and Saturday special exclusive stuff.

And hats ! all the hats (can I afford that tin foil hat now ?? )

I had my reservations with the size and apparent lack of complexity of the maps but tbh, the flatter, more basic, the better (Your bombs do the best level design) ; Also, the layers and layers of different block types gives you a lot to think about, you wont be rushing around as much as you think.

It has a growing user base that can get bigger seeing the insane reception and publicity this games already had, also the devs being very well connected/Time served indie 1st wavers and using early access the way it was intended with all the updates.

Seeing as its early access, my recomendation is for some limited range shotguns, maybe also some jousting mode :)
(2 vs 2, one sits on their partners back)

Ok,.. that tin foil hat!

Bombernauts is essentially what you'd get if you bred Super Smash Bros. and Bomberman. Easy to learn, difficult to master, this is probably one of the most fun multiplayer party games on Steam. The drop-in/drop-out lobby system makes it extremely easy to get a match going and the zillions of items, power-ups and maps makes every round feel fresh and exciting.

At the moment, the only negative is that the game has a very small playerbase which makes it difficult to find lobbies outside of peak hours. That said, it's still very playable with only two or three players, so if you can find just one friend to play with you will still be able to have fun. Hopefully this will stop being an issue as more people find out about and start playing this great game.

That said, I definitely recommend this game. Tell your friends about it, too!

I won my first game. Best video game ever.

Seriously, though, this is a fun game. If you're looking for a multiplayer game that you can just jump into and start playing with simple mechanics, look no further. Not only is this a relatively un-complicated game the aesthetic is something I haven't seen in a while. I think I heard Gassy Mexican or someone on his stream say it looked like a SEGA game, but it definitely has an N64 feel to it. It scratches that nostalgic itch without being too same-y. IT'S SO COLORFUL.

Didn't experience a laggy game, I was matched into a game really quickly (about a couple seconds after clicked "Quick Match"), mechanics are easy to understand while still allowing players to pull off some interesting combos that could be found through playing and observing.

TL;DR = Colorful, easy-to-learn, action-packed nostalgia trip. Would play again.
