Whats coming to Democracy 3 this year

Hi, Just an update from the Democracy 3 developers to fill you in on news about the game.
Firstly, although we released a new game (Democracy 3 Africa) that doesn't mean than the base D3 game is being neglected. In fact we have been working for months on a new expansion for the base game which we will officially announce in a month or so.

Secondly, we have been doing our best to fix some stability issues a few people have experienced, especially under windows 10. yesterday we patched the Clones & Drones DLC which we found to cause problems under very specific circumstances.

Thirdly, we know our list of supported languages could be bigger, and that the GUI for language selection is a total mess. We are planning on a Democracy 3 update that will re-engineer all of the translations and make it possible for us to support many more with ease. That should happen a fair bit later n the year (after the above-named expansion is complete).

Fourthly, some of the tweaks and improvements we made for Democracy 3 Africa should also be making it over to this game, such as some tweaks to the way income tax/flat tax work, and far greater stability in the face of corrupt or badly coded mods.

Just letting you know we are still working on stuff. Expect teasing screenshots soon :D

About This Game

Have you ever wanted to be president? or prime-minister? Convinced you could do a better job of running the country? Let's face it, you could hardly do a worse job than our current political leaders.

Crime, Unemployment, National Debt, Terrorism, Climate Change...Have you got the answers to the problems that face western industrialized nations? Here is your chance to find out...

An entire virtual country

Democracy 3 simulates the motivations, loyalties and desires of everyone in the country. A custom-designed neural network is used to model individual voters, each which varying memberships of voting groups, political parties and pressure groups. Each voters income is modeled, along with their levels of complacency and cynicism. This is the most sophisticated political strategy game ever created.

Unique user interface

Despite being vastly detailed under-the-hood, Democracy 3 has a unique user interface that makes visualizing the connections between laws, policies, voters and situations easy. A simple iconic-based view of your countries issues allows you to 'drill-down' through all the relationships between policies and voters to quickly analyze the impacts of your decisions. Your trade policy may affect GDP, which will affect unemployment, which will effect poverty, and thus crime, leading to a change in tourism, which affects GDP...

Complex simulated voters

Each individual voter is a mixture of a subset of the 21 different voter groups represented within the game. They might be a young, wealthy, liberal socialist commuter, or a retired conservative religious capitalist, for example. Not only this, but the extent to which they identify each of those groups is both variable, and can be affected by your policies in the long term. Convert your country to religion, or atheism, to capitalism, or socialism by careful and nuanced adjustment of your policies and laws over time. A 'focus group' feature lets you look at individual voters and see exactly how they came to a decision to vote for you (or not!).

Mod Support

Democracy 3 is very configurable and trivial to mod. It also has steam workshop support, for easy installation and browsing of modded content. Want to mod the game yourself? no problem, you need zero coding experience, just a spreadsheet program or a text editor, and we have a full comprehensive modding guide available here:
http://www.positech.co.uk/democracy3/modding.html
Modders can easily edit the policies, add new ones, change the way objects affect others, create entirely new countries, situations and even re-write the entire economic and political model. Everything is editable and accessible.

Really simple game, after only 6 hours of gameplay I already had 49% of all the achievements. And the game it self gets really boring very fast. Totally not worth the 22 euros I paid for it, believe me. I also ignored the comments and already regret it deeply. DO NOT BUY!!!

1. Dev's personal politics / philosophy very evident from playing.
2. Very repetitive regardless of the country you choose at start.
3. I played only 90 minutes and stopped out of boredom.
4. Visually appealing interface, but not immersive at all.

Would only buy on sale, and only for those looking for a politically charged Sim/Tycoon game. Otherwise save your money.

Love this game! Can get a wee bit repetitive, with the same scenarios/incidents occurring that you need to make a decision on. But thanks to the community generated workshop collections; it has kept is alive and added more content.

Have spent many enjoyable hours on the game and would definitely recommend the game overall.

It keeps crashing for me. I have installed it on two different computers, deleted all of the mods, and even then it doesn't work! It is very irritating. It'll either never load to the point where i can start a game, or it will crash after one turn. If this issue wasn't happening I'd reccommend it. But right now I can't! It is just pitifiul, and I have friends who have this issue as well so I know that this isn't just me.

If that were to be fixed I'd recommend it! It is fun and enjoyable when it works.

It's an amazing game but only if you can get it to work. I played it a few times then i uninstalled it to make room for new games and when I reinstalled it I couldn't even choose the new game option before it crashed and now it wont even get to that.

It is a good and fun game for running domestic affairs of a country. Unfortunately it has no real foreign affairs for you to deal with directly, as your actions on an international stage should affect approval ratings.

First of all, whatever country you choose, the game only offers you the option of a two-party system—the ruling party who just won the elections (the player) and the opposition party. Frankly it would have been better if they didn't just bother as I see no significance at all to the opposing party. They're just there to compete against you during election time—the people who don't like you will either vote for the opposing party or not vote at all.

Second, the game seems to completely drop any notion of the different powers of government. You, the player, are simply the executive and there is no significance at all of the legislative and judicial powers. The in-game "currency" or the thing you need in order to do things in the game is simply "political capital." So long as you have enough political capital, you can do anything from offering school vouchers to allowing abortion on demand, no complaints from the opposing party or from the judiciary. Aside from the obvious disdain you'll get from the conservatives, the only other problem you'll have is the increased chance of assassination. And you get this political capital simply from your cabinet ministers. For example, if your country has a lot of conservatives and you appoint an Education Minister with lots of conservative sympathies, then you'll get more political capital from that minister. VERY SIMPLISTIC.

Third, the main hindrance to achieving your goals is the measly excuse of assassinations. The other main hindrance is elections. You have to win elections in order to advance to your next term or the game is over. It's relatively easy since you're just fighting two other sides—the opposing party and the non-voters. But the assassination thing is frankly just luck. First you'll be getting messages about increasing terrorist activities and failed assassination attempts, then voila—they finally succeed, you're dead, and the game is over. Even if you're already running a police state where the politce are armed with submachine guns, they'll still get you. It's just a matter of probability.

Four, your country seems to exist in a bubble as there is also a minimal take of international diplomacy. Again, the take on diplomacy comes in the form of terrorists assassinating you if you oppress minorities too much. The closest input you have on diplomacy is funding for international aid. Increasing it would reduce racial tension in the country (and thus also reduce the chance that you'd be assassinated by a racial extremist) but would annoy Patriots which—guess what—also have their own lineup of assassins.

This is the game for those who appreciate LOTS of graphs and charts, as this game is mostly just graphs and charts. Not a bad thing, though, since the game makes full use of it through the way it simulates the internal dynamics of a nation through numbers. For example: increase state school funding >>> decrease poverty >>> decrease crime rates. However, to increase state school funding you may need to increase taxes which will lower the GDP and may lead to a corporate exodus further hurting your economy. Thus, on the aspect of the interrelationship of the different policies and factions within a society, the game does good for the most part but for me, it still hasn't achieved the level of realism I want in a game that purports to be about "democracy."

In short order of learning a few things I had turned the United Kingdom into an egalitarian, agrarian state that was truly green and economically prosperous land...a shining beacon in the modern times of stupid politicians. I now suggest all real-world politicians play this game for a week before resuming their so-called jobs and see if we can't avert some socio-political nonsense they get paid obscene amounts for! :P

The first 5 hours of this game are probably some of the most fun I've had with a political sim ever. After the first 5 hours, you're sat there wondering "well what the hell do I do now?" Sure, you can have fun trying to simulate different political parties, but that gets stale fast. I spent an hour learning the game. I spent the next two and a half fixing every problem that the British government had. In 2 hours, poverty was 0%, unemployment was 0%, health was 100%, there were no drasitc issues, and I was winning elections with 100% of the vote. Once you've made it that far, the game has no more depth to offer. Buy on sale. Do not pay full price.

I'm not 'not recommending' this game because I think it's boring, or bad, but because the UI is little more than an onslaught of information. Perhaps I would've been more invested in this game if things were a little less of a cluster.

The game is at times enjoyable, but the sense of depth quickly vanishes. For my first game, on default settings, my party received 99% of the votes, and 100% for the next two elections. The policies seem to offer choice, but in reality there are obvious ones to choose and keep high, and obvious ones to never even touch.

A very relaxing game, buy it on sale and sink a couple hours into it, but don't expect anything even close to the depth it advertises.
