About This Game

Have you ever wanted to be president? or prime-minister? Convinced you could do a better job of running the country? Let's face it, you could hardly do a worse job than our current political leaders.

Crime, Unemployment, National Debt, Terrorism, Climate Change...Have you got the answers to the problems that face western industrialized nations? Here is your chance to find out...

An entire virtual country

Democracy 3 simulates the motivations, loyalties and desires of everyone in the country. A custom-designed neural network is used to model individual voters, each which varying memberships of voting groups, political parties and pressure groups. Each voters income is modeled, along with their levels of complacency and cynicism. This is the most sophisticated political strategy game ever created.

Unique user interface

Despite being vastly detailed under-the-hood, Democracy 3 has a unique user interface that makes visualizing the connections between laws, policies, voters and situations easy. A simple iconic-based view of your countries issues allows you to 'drill-down' through all the relationships between policies and voters to quickly analyze the impacts of your decisions. Your trade policy may affect GDP, which will affect unemployment, which will effect poverty, and thus crime, leading to a change in tourism, which affects GDP...

Complex simulated voters

Each individual voter is a mixture of a subset of the 21 different voter groups represented within the game. They might be a young, wealthy, liberal socialist commuter, or a retired conservative religious capitalist, for example. Not only this, but the extent to which they identify each of those groups is both variable, and can be affected by your policies in the long term. Convert your country to religion, or atheism, to capitalism, or socialism by careful and nuanced adjustment of your policies and laws over time. A 'focus group' feature lets you look at individual voters and see exactly how they came to a decision to vote for you (or not!).

I broke Canada, got re-elected, and my biggest assassination threat comes from a group of nuns.

This game is a blast to play! Awesome turnbased goodness! The best part is seeing the effects of the decisions you make which are both engulfing and immersive. And the options you have are never in short supply! My hours upon review are short but do not be surprised if you see it grow! Highly recommended!!

This is a fun little game that locks you down in a cycle of 'just one more turn'-type addictiveness.

I say 'little' because I wouldn't pay full price for it. Despite the amount of work that clearly had to go into balancing all the different variables of this game, there's not a whole great deal of gameplay when you get down it it. After some initial touch-and-go difficulty, I made it through my first election, and from then on it was a pretty steady rise until I'm 10 terms in, with no unemployment, no poverty, 100% of the vote and the highest possible GDP. I say this not to brag, but merely to demonstrate that you can ace this game on the first try.

In saying that, it took me 6 hours, which is as long as a CoD campaign and they ask $90 bucks for that. And it was nice to turn Australia into a profitable yet compassionate and sustainable nation.

Even so, I can't justify spending $20 on something that you can buy on the app store for your phone. But for the sale price, it's wonderful. I'd highly recommend getting the DLC, by the way, as without it, I'd feel like there was too little content, even for the sale price.

Very satisfying to fix a country, especially when you can determine what "fixed" means. A lot of community content available as well

Made my dream Communist/Nazi Party then moved on to govern Australia. At the end of my last term I banned Gay marriage. A couple of minutes later my character was killed by a gang called ''The Lost Gays''

I keep getting killed and if I do what is happening in real life........ So anyway I'm not sure how accurate it is and I do not see how a creator's own political bias could not be involved (can't be helped) but interesting just the same.

Got unpopular amongst Conservaties.
Increased police force and Implemented CCTV to keep them happy.
Results: Racial tensions increase + crime rate increase = mass race riots.
Assassinated on the next turn by a conservative extremist group.

This game has a generally boring appearance, but a playthrough of the game will easily show that this game is not boring at all.

Things I like:
•It is easy to align yourself with a specific ideology (capitalism, socialism, etc.).
•The game is simplistic enough to understand, but still allows a general amount of micromanagement.
•The game allows for easy modding and several of the mods look as if they were part of the game.
•The DLC expands the game a great amount and is not very expensive.

Things I don't like:
•The game feels a bit expensive and although I enjoy the game, I was skeptical of buying it.
•The Extremism DLC is not expansive enough (i.e. it allows the ban of homosexuality if you choose, but not the ban of religion, which would be a sort of opposing idea).
•It is ridiculuously easy to be assassinated in the game. You can only assume that you, as a leader of a country, have absolutely no protection and have a target on your forehead. For example, I decided that my country should have retinal scans for those entering the borders (it was a test) and I was assassinated the next turn.
•The game is a bit simple when it comes to names for various groups. For example, if you are assassinated by an ethnic group, it will ALWAYS be the "Black Power" group. This needs more diversity, as black people obviously do not represent all ethnic people.

Overall, I recommend this game, along with its DLC. However, I would wait for a Steam sale to purchase it at a discounted price, because I can't really imagine having a desire to purchase this game if it is over $15 USD.

can be "beat" in a few hours.

You reach a point were there are no problems, you make money and have a large reserve and win elections with upwards of 95% of the vote going your way.

At this point the problems the game throws at you are repeating and no threat whatsoever.
There will be a market Meltdown every few rounds to try to ruin your budget, but it won't.

You can choose which country you want to govern, but it feels like it doesn't make any difference.
Examples of this include there only being a two Party system in countries that have a multiparty parliament,
also little details like having to deciede wether or not to raise the general speed limit when playing Germany, a country that famously doesn't have a general speed limit.

This game can be fun for a few hours, but to me feels unfinished and massively lacks attention to detail

I just bought this with the Humble Mozilla Bundle for $8 (which runs out in 11 hrs of this writing, and includes several other games).

At $8 the game is well priced. There is roughly 15 to 30 hours of replayability from what I can tell after playing for 4 hours (although I have played the Democracy 2 demo before, so I already knew what strategy I was going to use mostly). I just beat the campaign playing as the United States.

In my book, a 15-30 hour game is worth about $5-$10. Your mileage may vary.

What did surprise me was how effectively the game does suck me in - even though I was doing the same thing over and over again. There is a rogue-like element of getting assissinated repeatedly until you learn how to deal with the terrorist groups to keep them less unhappy. That, and the economy, are the majority of the game.

If you want a decent political simulator and you're fine with being assassinated almost everytime, then get this game. Interface may seem intimidating at first, but you will get used to it almost immediately. Only downside is that the gameplay is largely a bunch of f**king sliders, but I got past that. 8/10, pick it up if you have nothing else to get or if it's on sale.

Great game if you like politics...

After 5 terms I turned a starting debt at 4 trillion into a 2 trillion surplus in federal reserves... And the economy boomed and the US became a capitalist utopia... And my approval ratings were at 98% everyone loves me except Liberals and Socialists

10/10

The question between liberal policies and conservative policies, and which one is actually the right solution is finally solved in an understated and minimal game. The answer is: it doesn't matter because you're going to be assassinated. The only question is, will it be the out-of-work stock brokers or the angry unemployed black seperatists. Doesn't matter - you're dead.

The game is fun, but truth be told, I think Im actually playing an excel spreadsheet with a very snappy UI.

Totally Awesome! I highly recomend if you think you'd be interested in this type of game.

Pros:

Great interface that makes handling and understanding the complexity easy, in 5 minutes you'll have a good understanding of it.

In general I think it does a really good job of balancing the details and complexity with accessablity and giving you enough of all the details that it feels like a proper sim while not complicating things to the point of frustration.

No other game like it, at leas that I have seen. It fills this niche quite well and while it feels a little lacking in the details overall it really satifies my itch for this niche.

Looks very easy to mod, and lots of mods on Steam workshop!

Cons:

No Undo - this feels like something that should really be in there since it's turned based I feel like I should be able to undo and action before I end the turn. It's the only thing that makes the interface feel annoying or clunky.

Can't really tell what a policy will do until you impliment it - combined with not being able to undo this makes picking new policies to impliment feel much more random than they should since you won't be able to see the policy effects until you've already spent political capital implimenting them.

A thoroughly enjoyable game with a lot of replayability, due to the various social groups, choice of countries to rule and political play styles.
8/10

Assassinated by liberals despite the wide variety of choice, good environment and lack of mandatory laws.

This game is deep and fun. It provides challange. The only flaw that I find is the price. 23 EUROs is too much. It offers some content, but most of it is some kind of a sandbox. If you manage to get it for 10 - go for it. I was patient and got it from a bundle. Now I will wait for a discount on the two expansions, while I install and, possibly, create mods.
I got assassinated by nuns. With my next game I took care to eradicate religion and now there is not a single believer in Germany.
EDIT:
Consider the above before I added mods. Steam Workshop saves this game! Sadly, the comparison can be only made AFTER you have seen how many things are missing. Still, I recommend ti.
WITH mods it is 8/10; Without mods it is 5/10.

Fun game, really wants you to think logically in a cause-effect fashion. Too bad that once you finish the game, replay value is really low on this one. picked it up for 8 bucks from humble bundle, while it is 25 dollars on steam, overpriced game.
