Before this game I'd never played any of the other games in the franchise. I purchased this game simply for my love of RTS strategy and the insane(ly good) concept of dragon combat.

So what does this game do right?

There is an interesting research system integrated into the game, research is conducted through research points that you pick up per turn depending on the territories controlled and the buildings on those territories.

The politics system is actually a lot of fun (though frustrating at times) and a large part of the game. Political decisions are made throughout the game knowingly or not. For example if you build far many buildings in your controlled territories you can lose reputation with the elves (which are predictably nature orientated). Every turn or so you vote on some initiatives brought up by certain representatives and can lose or gain reputation points. At first you might think, so what? However, since each faction inhabits certain territories the amount of troops can build or the resources you gain per territory are highly dependent on how much that faction likes you.

Additionally, also must manage your responses to your friendly generals and the princess you choose to “woo” as well. Dialogue options between these characters lead to some pretty significant outcomes during the game so it is wise to pay attention to the characters and faction personalities.

Oh and by the way I can't really stress enough that each voiced character you come across has a unique personality that will develop over time with their own specific needs and wants.

Dragon combat, how how I love you. During the normal RTS strategy portions you can become a dragon and blaze around the combat area using specific abilities and really punishing enemies that come against you.

So what didn’t I like about this game?

Combat can feel really messy without there being much strategy that just having "more" than the other opponent. Sure there are a ok sized amount of abilities for each class and each class has a counter class (or building) but it really feels under utilized.

Combat on higher difficultly levels can be extremely punishing. Each territory can only draft so many troops before it is tapped out, this encourages you to expand into fresh territories. However if the enemy decides to attack a tapped out territory that doesn't have a large amount of troops stationed on it, there won't be much of a way to fight back.

What kind of irked me as well is that no matter how many troops I had at the end of each act it seems that there is a standard set amount placed around the map when starting a new chapter. This kind of took away from my sense of accomplishment when taking down an enemy and managing my armies.

Finally, I felt the game drags a bit on the final act not really giving you much to do besides to slug it out with the final enemies until the end. For me, this was kind of a unsatisfying conclusion and would have liked to see even more personally engaging missions involving your generals, allies, or princess.

~RTS aspect completely blows.
~Combat graphics blow.
~Campaign is short without much replayability.

~Political decision making is interesting. They need about triple the ammount of them tho, with a non campaign mode where you can make RNG selected politcal choices.

As is the game is not nearly worth the pricetag.

This game is fun. It's not a serious strategy game, not a serious art game, nothing too serious. Everything is really just fun. If you want to have a good time, there's plenty of good times to be had here. The only improvements would be adding fog of war so things aren't toooo easy, and polishing up the players dialog. 7/10

Divinity: Dragon Commander is a Real-Time strategy, turn based and third-person shooter. Larian Studios developed and published the game on the 6th August 2013.

The game itself is unique in that it blends politics into your strategy. You can either play single player and skirmish on ten different maps for the classic RTS game or play on a board (much like Risk) where you move your units to conquer territories and gain resources. The turn-based strategy was very amusing because you could decide whether to fight in the battle yourself (dragon) or have one of your generals auto-resolve the fight. Each one giving a higher rate of success depending on the terrian and units used.

But the biggest selling point in this game is the dragon, you can control three different dragons that has varies specialties such as melee, magic or a mix of both. The game does very well to give you a feeling of empowerment when you use the dragon, some of the late game abilities can turn into battles whether you rain fire or boost your troops with buffs.

However, this game has it's flaws. One of which is the micro-management required to use both dragon and unit abilities. For example: Warlocks (the flying blimps) have several abilities and damage the enemy. While in dragon form, you're very limited to managing your soldiers. Either selecting troops in the area or all troops. This makes it difficult to then combine both unit abilities and your own.

The game also has a beautiful narrative, characters and the political system and dialogue on this game really makes this game feel like an epic fantasy along with the OST used. Some choices you make politically can hinder or boost your performance in turn-based and real-time because of the support you have in the region.

TL;DR Summery;

Pros -

1. Fantastic Character development. Edmund for example was my favourite.
2. Political system is very diverse, often challenging your morality vs strategic importance.
3. The OSD is very under-rated in this game, the OST does a great job of giving you the epic fantasy awe.
4. Voice acting in this was outstanding, Corvus was a character that had a very chilling/demon-like voice.
5. Mechanics of the game are fluent. The game allows you to research upgrades for your troops and dragon, very fun in particular in turn-based.
6. The dragon adds amazing replayability value to your battles, giving you the sense of empowerment and fun as you rain down fire and brimstone.

Cons -

1. Story falls short, with the maps being recycled in turn for bigger board maps.
2. Micro-management between varies troops and your dragon offers difficult learning curve for new players.
3. Troops are the same for all factions. No variety in troops often means you'll be spamming units for cannon fodder until you have enough resources to build high-tier troops.
4. The dragon brings balancing issues in multiplayer games, with some games lasting merely minutes from dragon rushing.
5. The RTS element of the game could use work with the same maps being played over again, the camera angle feels rigid and the dragon could use more fluent movement. Unable to fluently fly except for one direction makes it hard to dog-fight other dragons.
For example: Using jet-pack thrusters can only mean you travel in one specific direction. You are unable to turn while using jet-pack thrusters made me feel very immobile while casting abilities and auto-attacks.

Rating 7-8/10

Highly unique RTS game that blends both epic fantasy and politics with a refreshing sense of originality.

An interesting hybrid of real-time strategy, role-playing, and dragon action. Not sure if non-Divinity fans would be interested in this, but it's not bad. It's a shame I was not able to play any multiplayer matches, but I hope that changes in the future.
