What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Nuclear Throne was originally created during MOJAM 2013 as a tiny, two day prototype called 'Wasteland Kings'. We never stopped adding little things to the game, even as we moved on to other projects. We had livestreamed development during MOJAM, and decided to continue doing that while we worked on a full version of the game.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“The game will be in Early Access until it is done, at which point it'll launch on PC, Mac, Linux, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita. Until that point, we release weekly updates (each weekend) and livestream every Tuesday and Thursday frmo 1PM CET to 5PM CET on http://twitch.tv/Vlambeer.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Nuclear Throne will feature seven full worlds of procedural action, four main bosses, tons of secrets, more than 75 weapons, 10 mutants, dozens of powerful mutations and local multiplayer.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The game is fully stable and playable, and has new additions made to it every weekend.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“If you want to wait until the game is done, it'll be available for $11,99 after development is complete. We're not doing any sales or bundles until the game is out of Early Access - we want people that really care about the game to buy and play it now. If you're curious as to how a game like this evolves or grows, now is the time to jump in.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We livestream development every Tuesday and Thursday from 1PM CET to 5PM CET, are very active in our forums and upload a new build every single weekend.”

Thank you!!!

We’re thankful to announce that Nuclear Throne broke through a total Steam revenue of over 1 million dollars just a few moments ago. That’s kind of ridiculous and amazing, and we owe all of you that bought the game once or many times for the fact that we reached that number.

Of course, this doesn’t mean that the two of us now just have a million dollars sitting in our bank account. A good part of that number goes to our amazing crew – Paul, Jukio, Joonas and Justin – and making sure that they can work on the game comfortably too. Quite a bunch of it has already been spent on travel and conferences and meeting and events, so that we can meet you and negotiate over future platforms for the game to release on. Part of it has been spent on developing the game further and extending our development process beyond the original six months that we had planned.

For that entire period of time, we’ve tried to keep you up to date of progress by doing two livestreams a week and updating the game weekly. We’ve not discounted the game even when we’ve had offers to be in huge Steam sales or bundles, because we feel discounting a work-in-progress is disingenuous. We’re always scouring the internet, following your forum discussions, finding new and amazing fan content every day, laughing about your Twitch banter, and watching your Let’s Plays and Y.V. videos.

It’s easy to forget that when we originally started on Nuclear Throne, we set out to finish a quick jam prototype we made in half a year. Instead, we launched Weekly Update 70 just earlier today, indicating that we’ve been working on the game for almost two years. Over the past two years, all of us have gained an idea of where the game needs to end up, and we can finally say that we’re slowly getting close to a final game. We just wanted to let you know once more that this project would not be possible without your support, not just in very concrete ways like helping us pay our rent, but also in terms of spreading the word and giving us feedback.

As always, thank you for being a wonderful, understanding and encouraging community while we somehow try to kick together a video game.

Update #70 - Bolt Variety - Weekend of April 24th

A bit of a smaller one again, as some of the team are in Germany to visit A MAZE festival, and some of the team were all over the world! We've still managed to cram in a brand new bolt weapon type, so let's see if it's any good! Other than that, we've probably eliminated Melting's "dead end" bug, changed crossbow hitboxes slightly to allow you to shoot nearby enemies, and fixed a few other things as well.

Sorry for being late with the update this week, I really needed a quick break after a ridiculous travel schedule this week (2 continents, 3 countries, 4 presentations at 4 events, in 7 days). We'll be back on our usual schedule again next week with releases. Thanks for your understanding!

JW said I should add "HAVE A FUN" to this one, so HAVE A FUN.

    Features
  • Seeker Pistol.
  • Seeker Shotgun.

    Balancing
  • Tiny change to the way Plasma Minigun fires.
  • Open Mind now gives you an extra chest in 7_3.

    Fixes
  • Fixed bolt hitmasks.
  • Fixed Melting's "dead end" Ultra bug.
  • Throne Butt now has a dash between the character name and description.

Revving back up again, and really excited about some of the progress we're making with the UI so far. We're also slowly getting more information together on the physical editions of the game.

This has been my go-to game for months now! There's an incredible amount of variety in the weapons and abilities that you can find, and they get crazier as you go on! Revolver. Sledgehammer. Laser rifle. Minigun. Energy sword. Auto grenade shotgun. Lightning cannon. Each character is also completely unique, and plays very differently. One revolves around spawning minions to assist you, while another can dual wield, an yet another can explode the corpses of defeated enemies! You can become absurdly powerful, but you're still always vulnerable, and it's PERFECT. If you have played some of the modern action-roguelikes that are so popular today (Binding of Isaac, Crypt of the Necrodancer), you have likely noticed that you become nearly unstoppable after a while. In Isaac, you get Brimstone, tammy's head, and holy mantle? You can't die. This is not the case with Nuclear Throne! You can launch nukes into crowds of enemies, you can spawn an entire army of allies to protect you, you can use telekinesis to push away projectiles, and yet the slightest misstep leads to a yeti hurling a car at you, putting your rampage to an explosive end. And that explosion is going to look good, sound good, and feel good, because the visual and audio design is extremely on point. You can really feel the power in a gun when you're shooting it. The only reason I can think of to pass up this game is if you're just not into the challenge of it. As I said, you can die in an instant at any moment. You'll generally have 8 HP tops, and a standard bullet does 3 damage. Many things deal more than that. You do not get invincibility frames upon being hit (I THINK. If you do, it's like 2 or 3 frames tops). If that sounds like a dealbreaker to you, I guess this isn't your kind of game. If that sounds exciting to you, get the game NOW! I honestly can't recommend it enough. Have fun!

3. Giant radioactive "dog" things suddenly jumping and murdering you
4. Necromancers reviving freaks from directly under your feet in the Labs
5. Lil' Hunter and everything about him
6. Giant robot human things throwing cars at you out of nowhere
7. Laser crystals firing at you from some remote location off the screen

I think that the replay ability is super high as there are always new maps, upgrades and charaters you can play as. This game doesn't look the best, but compared to some games, this has so many hours of play time, plus this game is constantly being updated so new weapons, enemies, mutations and charaters.
