What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Nuclear Throne was originally created during MOJAM 2013 as a tiny, two day prototype called 'Wasteland Kings'. We never stopped adding little things to the game, even as we moved on to other projects. We had livestreamed development during MOJAM, and decided to continue doing that while we worked on a full version of the game.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“The game will be in Early Access until it is done, at which point it'll launch on PC, Mac, Linux, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita. Until that point, we release weekly updates (each weekend) and livestream every Tuesday and Thursday frmo 1PM CET to 5PM CET on http://twitch.tv/Vlambeer.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Nuclear Throne will feature seven full worlds of procedural action, four main bosses, tons of secrets, more than 75 weapons, 10 mutants, dozens of powerful mutations and local multiplayer.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The game is fully stable and playable, and has new additions made to it every weekend.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“If you want to wait until the game is done, it'll be available for $11,99 after development is complete. We're not doing any sales or bundles until the game is out of Early Access - we want people that really care about the game to buy and play it now. If you're curious as to how a game like this evolves or grows, now is the time to jump in.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We livestream development every Tuesday and Thursday from 1PM CET to 5PM CET, are very active in our forums and upload a new build every single weekend.”

Update #51 - The Tired Update - Weekend of November 14th

We're late and we're sorry. Turns out Rami's internet in India isn't as stable as we'd hope.

Either way, we've been working non-stop for a couple of weeks now, so this update we took it a bit easier. By taking it easy we mean making a small pile of cool new guns: The first two Ultra Weapons, the ultra revolver and ultra laser pistol, both late game killing machines that use both rads and ammo. Other than that, there's a new type of bullet weapons, using 2 ammo per shot and firing heavy bullets. In a much-debated, controversial move, the beloved sledgehammer has been replaced by a wrench, and we made a "new" sledgehammer with more damage and a slower rate of fire. That's all for now! Enjoy!

    Features
  • Ultra Revolver
  • Ultra Laser Pistol
  • Heavy Revolver
  • Heavy Machinegun
  • The Sledgehammer is now the Wrench, but there's a new Sledgehammer!

    Fixes
  • Fixed a crash related to explosions.
  • Fixed a crash related to chicken's max HP loss.

    Misc
  • Slightly changed the origin of the revolver, making it look better when holstered.

Have fun and don't forget to let us know your thoughts!

Update #50 - Cleaning up! - Weekend of November 7th

Fifty updates in slightly over a year, that's ridiculous. To celebrate, we've spent a week fixing bugs, balancing, and changing tiny details! Speaking of details, there's now a new type of art asset in most levels, adding tiny bits of variation to the floor tiles! Exciting stuff. Other than that, massive changes to Chicken, big changes to Steroids, and as said before, a ton of balancing.

    Features
  • Little art details have been added to some of the tilesets. Expect bits of grass and clams, the usual really.

    Balancing
  • Changed Throne Butt for Steroids.
  • Steroids now also has all weapons fully automatic as their passive.
  • Getting decapitated as Chicken now lowers your max HP by one, but there are some ways to get it back!
  • Eagly Eyes now also lets you see a bit further.
  • Extra Feet now makes you walk normal on all surfaces.
  • Frog Eggs now have more HP.
  • Melting's Ultra now requires enemies to have slightly less HP.
  • Eyes' Ultra radius has been increased slightly.
  • Nukes now have a smaller hitbox, allowing for better maneuvring.
  • Shotgun masks are now slightly different, and Shotgun Fingers should work slightly different.
  • Sawed Off Shotgun now has more range, less accuracy.
  • Shotgun, Double Shotgun and Sawed Off Shotgun rate of fire has been increased slightly.
  • Plant's Snare now stops toxic gas.
  • Toxic Barrels now have bigger explosions.
  • Golden Weapons now only appear after looping.

    Fixes
  • Enemies should no longer get stuck in walls, hopefully.
  • Rogue's Ultra now works as planned.
  • Fixed a crash caused by Weapon Chests.
  • Fixed a crash caused by mutating too much.
  • Breaking a single wall now makes the floor look broken.
  • Toxic Launchers now always spawn toxic gas.
  • Chicken Sword no longer spawns when you get to difficulty 99. :P
  • Rebel B skin now looks cool from 5_1 instead of 5_2.
  • Big Rad Canisters can't be infested anymore.
  • Shells should no longer go through walls.

    Misc
  • Eyes' Ultra is now explained better.
  • Rogue Ammo canisters can now be "opened" by Portals.
  • New bone pile prop.
  • Art for the horrific boss waiting in loop has been updated.
  • A new rare tip has been added.

So yeah, that's a huge update. We're working on a little big new thing for end-game players for this week. Don't forget to check out our livestreams and the like, as always on Tuesday and Thursday at 1PM CET.

See you all next week!

This game is a lot of fun. A real Vlambeer gem, with weekly updates and randomly generated levels, weapons and such its one of them indies that basically never ends. In this masterpiece you play one of many 'mutants' with hope in their eyes, looking to reach the Nuclear Throne! Out of my 135 or so friends only 3 of them play it, I highly recommend you pick it up!

Imagine that all was good in the world and Fallout had a hot steamy night with Hotline Miami, but due to the copious ammount of awesome that was in the room the baby ended up being a roguelite. Boom, Nuclear Throne. I literally can't stop playing it. I just keep coming back, no matter how cruel it decides to be.

This game might look boring at first, well atleast for me, but when I actually bought the game for a cheap price I was in suprise! The game is amazing! It's so much fun! I love that the levels are randomly generated, it adds variation to the game! The games sound effects are just awesome! Aswell as the guns and stuff. I really like that the game has secret levels, characters and guns for people to find. I haven't played Coop mode yet but i think one person uses a controller and the other person uses a keyboard and mouse, I think that will really fun to play with a friend. I can feel it.

If you don't know if you want to buy the game because of its big price go and try to find a website that sells the games cheap, like I did.
I don't like to give x/x so i'll just say thats IT'S REALLY ♥♥♥♥ING FUN!

Nuclear Throne is the best game you aren't playing. Procedurally generated action, tightly focused, maximum feedback, it is easily the Early Access game I've been most satisfied with.

The Binding Of Isaac + Spelunky + Hotline Maimi + Risk Of Rain + Crypt Of The Necrodancer = Nuclear Throne

Im 18 hours In and I still have yet to complete this game, the shear variety of weaponary at your disposal to irradicate hordes of bandits and bosses, this game will have you on the edge of your seat knowing one small slip will cause your quick death. With the replayability of this game youl find yourself bouncing right back in saying "Just One More Try".

Be warned, this game is hard, dont expect an easy victory.

A lot of people call Nuclear Throne a roguelike. This is a dumb thing to call it because a) all useful meaning has long been wrung from the term and b) we already have a word for games like this. Nuclear Throne is an ARCADE GAME. It is loud and bright and deceptively simple and when you die you start over from the beginning. Nuclear Throne is a throwback so pure it should come with a USB-compatible coin slot so that I can stop playing when I run out of quarters instead of never. I could also use a lot of vogue words like “tactile” and “crunchy” to describe how Nuclear Throne plays, but I’d rather just play it instead. Jargon like this gets thrown around when our normal vocabulary falls short of describing an experience. In response we can either pore over the dictionary or enjoy the fuzzy space between word and meaning. Intellectualizing ♥♥♥♥ing Defender doesn’t get you the high score.

That moment when you have 0 health as a chicken, go through a vortex, and have Rhino Skin (+4 HP) as a mutation choice.

10/10 would grit teeth again.

---------------------------------
Editing this since apparently it's getting a few reads, and I now have the time to actually make a review for this game (that is absolutely amazing).

In all seriousness, this game is worth the money as well as the first 30 or so deaths you have when you first play, trying to get a hold of the game. Once you get the hang of things (simple to do, hard to master), and you start getting farther and farther each time, this game becomes even more of an amazingly fun roguelike game.

I rarely buy games at full price, but this game had my attention for its grittiness and fast-paced gameplay - and I'm telling you, it's one of the best games I have in my library of 360+ (I've lost count) games. If you need a good 5 minute game (easy to pick up, play, and put down), PLEASE do yourself and get it now. The early access is by far playable, and Vlambeer is great with both their arcade games and community involvement on this one. Plus, the soundtrack is very nice; I'm hoping there'll be an official DL for it sometime in the future.

Get it :3

This game is extremely difficult , fun , irritating , and will make you swear more than a sailor all at the same time while restarting every 5 mins due to a cheap death , but funny thing is you won't be able to help it , it is very very addictive even with all the cheapness flying about.

Pros +

Good variety of characters to pick from , each with it's own ability.
Good variety of weapons to blow things apart with provided you can live long enough to find one.
Monsters galore !
Bullethell in some levels.

Cons -

Life counter needs to be reworked ( IMO ) 1 hit from anything other than a normal bullet is instant death. Example ,
Purple sword ninjas sometimes thrown at you en masse always kill you in 1 hit , had crystal with 14 life get dropped in 1 slash. Starting life should be doubled at the very least or check enemy damage output. Also on a side note , even doubling life in MOST cases will still result in death 95% of the time anyways.

Traps hurt you and not enemies , but you can blow yourself apart as well with your own weaponry , seems kinda lopsided but hey it's still fun.

Seems like any character you pick you need to carry at least 1 melee weapon on you to deflect incoming rounds in some boss rooms , unless you are a pro at games like Danmaku 2 that is...

With all this being said and as much as this game royally ♥♥♥♥es me off sometimes I just can't help but play it and recommend it to everyone , buy it , load it up grab some snacks and get ready to swear and get ♥♥♥♥ed while having a ****ing blast at the same time.

In this game you go places and accomplish things, unlike real life where you go nowhere and accomplish nothing so in conclusion never try to do anything ever.
