What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Nuclear Throne was originally created during MOJAM 2013 as a tiny, two day prototype called 'Wasteland Kings'. We never stopped adding little things to the game, even as we moved on to other projects. We had livestreamed development during MOJAM, and decided to continue doing that while we worked on a full version of the game.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“The game will be in Early Access until it is done, at which point it'll launch on PC, Mac, Linux, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita. Until that point, we release weekly updates (each weekend) and livestream every Tuesday and Thursday frmo 1PM CET to 5PM CET on http://twitch.tv/Vlambeer.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Nuclear Throne will feature seven full worlds of procedural action, four main bosses, tons of secrets, more than 75 weapons, 10 mutants, dozens of powerful mutations and local multiplayer.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The game is fully stable and playable, and has new additions made to it every weekend.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“If you want to wait until the game is done, it'll be available for $11,99 after development is complete. We're not doing any sales or bundles until the game is out of Early Access - we want people that really care about the game to buy and play it now. If you're curious as to how a game like this evolves or grows, now is the time to jump in.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We livestream development every Tuesday and Thursday from 1PM CET to 5PM CET, are very active in our forums and upload a new build every single weekend.”

Update #69 - Four assassins - Weekend of April 17th

Time for your weekly update of Nuclear Throne, and we think this one is pretty sweet! As you'll immediately notice when you boot up, we're slowly continuing work on the interface, and we'll be continue to break and rebuild stuff over the weeks. This week we also decided to throw in a bunch of balancing, some cool new loop things, and two more possibly quite amazing weapons! Other than that, we've also slightly addressed the problem formally known as "shitty RNG", by ensuring at least a tiny bit of cover near most spawns!

    Features
  • Some more work on the character select screen, even though things are still broken and very unfinished!
  • New bullet weapon: The Incinerator.
  • New energy weapon with a 6 second reload time.
  • Hopefully, improved spawns!
  • You can now swap cursed weapons for other cursed weapons. This one is really interesting.
  • Enemies on loop might now spawn as a group of enemies of the same type. Have fun fighting 4 assassins at once!

    Balancing
  • Rads now fade faster on loops as well.
  • IDPD difficulty now ramps up, making sure your first few encounters won't be Shielders.
  • Crossbow rate of fire has been decreased slightly.
  • Laser Minigun is now less accurate.
  • Heavy Assault Rifle now spawns later.
  • Lightning Rifle now spawns sooner.
  • Slight lightning shotgun ROF buff.
  • Exploding Guardians now spawn slightly less bullets. (Guardians are still getting a buff eventually, but we're just making these a bit more playable for now.)
  • Made some more loop-exclusive changes to Lil Hunter.

    Fixes
  • Ravens should now fly towards the player if there are only a few enemies left.
  • You can no longer press L to toggle the letterboxes.
  • Scorpions should no longer get stuck in walls. Fingers crossed!

    Misc
  • More Crown Vault tiles.
  • Blood Cannon art.
  • Heavy Bullet weapons now drop heavy shells.
  • Plasma weapons freeze the game a bit less.
  • New tip.

Enjoy, and we'll be back with more - as always - next week.

This has been my go-to game for months now! There's an incredible amount of variety in the weapons and abilities that you can find, and they get crazier as you go on! Revolver. Sledgehammer. Laser rifle. Minigun. Energy sword. Auto grenade shotgun. Lightning cannon. Each character is also completely unique, and plays very differently. One revolves around spawning minions to assist you, while another can dual wield, an yet another can explode the corpses of defeated enemies! You can become absurdly powerful, but you're still always vulnerable, and it's PERFECT. If you have played some of the modern action-roguelikes that are so popular today (Binding of Isaac, Crypt of the Necrodancer), you have likely noticed that you become nearly unstoppable after a while. In Isaac, you get Brimstone, tammy's head, and holy mantle? You can't die. This is not the case with Nuclear Throne! You can launch nukes into crowds of enemies, you can spawn an entire army of allies to protect you, you can use telekinesis to push away projectiles, and yet the slightest misstep leads to a yeti hurling a car at you, putting your rampage to an explosive end. And that explosion is going to look good, sound good, and feel good, because the visual and audio design is extremely on point. You can really feel the power in a gun when you're shooting it. The only reason I can think of to pass up this game is if you're just not into the challenge of it. As I said, you can die in an instant at any moment. You'll generally have 8 HP tops, and a standard bullet does 3 damage. Many things deal more than that. You do not get invincibility frames upon being hit (I THINK. If you do, it's like 2 or 3 frames tops). If that sounds like a dealbreaker to you, I guess this isn't your kind of game. If that sounds exciting to you, get the game NOW! I honestly can't recommend it enough. Have fun!

For an Early Access game, Nuclear Throne is quite impressive. With tons of guns on your side, and random mutations to make runs different every time, where can you go wrong? Oh, and go ahead and add a wide array of different characters to play as! With so many combinations, you'll lose track of the time while fighting hordes of enemies.

1. Getting bullets reflected back at you by the IDPD
2. Portals exploding cars right as you are about to enter
3. Giant radioactive "dog" things suddenly jumping and murdering you
4. Necromancers reviving freaks from directly under your feet in the Labs
5. Lil' Hunter and everything about him
6. Giant robot human things throwing cars at you out of nowhere
7. Laser crystals firing at you from some remote location off the screen
8. Getting a horrible spawn location for the Big Dog fight
9. Having absolutely no ammo for the Throne
10. Explosive weapons killing you because decorative objects are in the way

If you cringed while reading this, there's a good chance that you love Nuclear Throne.
If you have no idea what I'm talking about, then you really need to try Nuclear Throne.

Incredibly fun and addictive roguelike-like with a great selection of weapons and upgrades. Every character has their own unique trait which comes in handy for different kinds and levels of players, as well as makes for a creative ground to come up with various strategies. Controls are smooth and responsive (Y.V.s airhorn is a neat bonus). The graphics look great, lovely character design, colors feel well thought out, and the music is super nice and draws me right in. I wouldn't mind buying the soundtrack for listening to while I work! I couldn't recommend this game more. If you like this genre, you'll love Nuclear Throne.

This is my favorite "rogue like" game yet, gameplay is super smooth, it has great replayability. It is pretty hard, especially when you get to a new area and don't know what to expect yet. You'll find yourself dying by the dumbest things when you get good mutations and think you are badass, don't get cocky, its deadly!
