What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Nuclear Throne was originally created during MOJAM 2013 as a tiny, two day prototype called 'Wasteland Kings'. We never stopped adding little things to the game, even as we moved on to other projects. We had livestreamed development during MOJAM, and decided to continue doing that while we worked on a full version of the game.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“The game will be in Early Access until it is done, at which point it'll launch on PC, Mac, Linux, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita. Until that point, we release weekly updates (each weekend) and livestream every Tuesday and Thursday frmo 1PM CET to 5PM CET on”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Nuclear Throne will feature seven full worlds of procedural action, four main bosses, tons of secrets, more than 75 weapons, 10 mutants, dozens of powerful mutations and local multiplayer.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The game is fully stable and playable, and has new additions made to it every weekend.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“If you want to wait until the game is done, it'll be available for $11,99 after development is complete. We're not doing any sales or bundles until the game is out of Early Access - we want people that really care about the game to buy and play it now. If you're curious as to how a game like this evolves or grows, now is the time to jump in.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We livestream development every Tuesday and Thursday from 1PM CET to 5PM CET, are very active in our forums and upload a new build every single weekend.”

Update #88 - Tweak Tweak, Fix Fix - Weekend of August 28th

For the last 88 (!!!) updates our double digit updates have been huge, but you can tell we're moving towards completing this game - there's mostly little things left, and we can't do 'big things' without getting all of those 'little things' our of the way. In other words, it was fixing, tweaking, balancing, and the introduction of a new elite enemy. Enjoy!

  • New elite enemy in the sewers.

  • Slightly more bullet ammo per drop.
  • Alligators now wait for a bit before firing.
  • Less HP drops and less rads in Hard mode.
  • Splinters are now more effective with Bolt Marrow.
  • Ultra crossbow now has a higher rate of fire.
  • Less "last enemy is a turret somewhere far away" situations.

  • The unlock screen now works with gamepad too.
  • Stopped some things from spawning very close to the player. Few more tweaks to these things.
  • Removed bandits from a certain area.
  • Removed IDPD from a certain area.
  • Loop portal is now green again.
  • Fixed a tutorial crash.
  • Some changes to the Chicken Sword.
  • You can no longer take crowns to the tutorial.
  • Fixed a bug caused by pressing arrow keys in the stat/character select screen.
  • Fixed a bug related to toxic gas.
  • You should be able to swap your loadout weapons again.
  • Fixed a boss intro crash.

  • Unlock screen now has a darker background.
  • Removed the random crown option for now.
  • Toxic Gas now glows properly.
  • Updated the Crown Vault art.

PAX is going exceptionally well, and we're amazed at how many of you have dropped by the booth to tell of your favorite Nuclear Throne deaths, kills and stories. Also thanks to those of you who brought fan-art, drawings, friends, or Coca Cola for Rami and thanks to those cosplaying our characters at PAX! One more day!

Update #87 - Efficiency - Weekend of August 21st

You wouldn't believe how many things we could finally strike-through on our to do lists and checklists this week. There's nothing too exciting gameplay-wise this week, but we definitely made some serious progress towards that long-awaited version 1.0! Anyway, long days of efficient and hard work are pretty exhausting, so let's just jump into the cool new stuff:

  • We've created a simple tutorial to explain the controls! Turns out it's rather possible to miss the fact that you can switch weapons.
  • Awesome music for the Labs and Crystal Caves loop bosses!
  • Boss intro for the Labs loop boss!
  • Updated the stats screen, now a bit more bare-bones but functional.
  • Unlock popups!
  • The loadout screen has been updated, crowns are now locked from the start until looping with them with a specific character.

  • Crown Statues are no longer damaged by enemies.
  • Nerfed Chicken's "hard to kill" Ultra.
  • Caves loop boss can no longer be pushed through walls.
  • Bit less HP for the Caves loop boss.
  • The Throne boss now shoots slightly less projectiles.
  • The Sewers loop boss now scales in difficulty with loops.
  • The Throne boss now scales in difficulty with loops.
  • Bouncer Shotgun rate of fire has been increased, and it spawns a bit sooner.
  • Laser Crystals now drop more ammo.
  • Made IDPD a bit more effective on loops.

  • Y.V.'s B Ultra reload time has been restored.
  • Fixed a crash on the daily score screen.
  • Swapped the Plant and Robot unlocks, whoops.

  • Changed some tips.
  • Art for the Super Bazooka!
  • Nicer debris in the Jungle.
  • The way areas and secret areas are named has been changed.
  • Back buttons are slightly brighter.

Also don't forget to visit the Vlambeer booth at PAX Prime, which is not in the Indie MEGABOOTH this year, but a fully professional seperate booth of our own. We'll be introducing an amazing, brand new Nuclear Throne t-shirt and some other new merchandise. For those of you who won't be in Seattle, some of those will be for sale online later.

There's still a lot to do, but the ratio of 'things done' to 'things to do' is starting to look really nice for us now. Let us know what you think, as usual, and don't forget to check into our livestreams on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

They always told Fish it didn't exist. They told him to stop looking for it. Maybe it's for the best that they stayed behind.
The Throne is even more glorious than he had ever imagined. It speaks of hope, of power unlimited, of rebirth, of restoration. It could save him. It could turn back all of this. It could give him everything he wanted. It could put him at the pinnacle of the new world.
His reverie is interrupted by a sound from Crystal, shifting uncomfortably on her stubby feet. In an instant he knows why, his heart sinking into his stomach, feeling like it's about to herniate. Of the six of them that set out toward the Throne, five made it -- and there's only one seat.
He admits, they had joked a little about that along the way, about the possibility that only one of them would get to sit on the Throne, about whom the honour would go to. They had all laughed when Robot weighed in: "SELECT MUTANTNAME FROM TEAMMATES WHERE THRONEBUTT_QUALITY = (SELECT MAX(THRONEBUTT_QUALITY) FROM TEAMMATES);” But nobody's laughing now. Fish knows what everybody's doing, before he even looks around. Every one of them is a trained killer, and they’re all evaluating former friends, making up minds about whom to kill first.
Crystal's tough on the exterior, but she's likely to crack once she sees her family start killing each other off. It was hard enough for her when she wasn't able to save Eyes from the Horror. Rebel's got thicker blood flowing through her, though. Fish knows she'd kill him just as easily as one of her minions if it tried to jump on the Throne. Y.V. is a wildcard; Fish doesn’t even know why he'd bother with going for the Throne in the first place or what he intends for it. Robot's the biggest worry -- it's made clear time and time again that the Throne is its greatest priority, but not whether it needs to sit on it. If it does, there's no question that it'll eliminate all of them once they’re no longer of use.
Is Fish or the others of any further use to Robot? All of them are staring at it now, hands tensed, drifting instinctively towards gun belts. Crystal's eyes catch Fish’s, and he nods -- then a sudden crash almost throws fish off his webbed feet. Instantly everyone is facing the Throne again, as ports around its base start to open, and... Something... starts to unearth itself.
The team moves as one again as they back away, drawing weapons simultaneously, as the throne lifts slowly up from the floor, looming down toward them. Green lights blaze forth from it as guns swing into position, a dozen giga-capacitors whining, charging up for the Throne's first volley. Automated defences, they should have known.
Crystal takes a dash forward and holds her arms out to either side, but fish grabs her and pulls her back before she can harden, warning her not to throw herself away on the Throne's massive claws. She nods, and her feet fuse to the floor anyway, as she hefts her minigun and begins firing alongside the rest of the group. Now singing a melancholy dirge, Fish fires hot plasma into the thrones hull. There's no telling which one of fish’s teammates is going to survive this fight, but he knows he’ll lay down his life for any of them. As long as it ensures that one of them -- any of them -- makes it onto that seat...

Fish can roll.

Good game, 10/10

Quick serious review,

Very good (and challenging) rogue-like shooter with tons of weapons and enemy variety, and a unique way of 'leveling up' in the form of mutations that aid your quest to destroy the Nuclear throne.

If you've ever played The Binding of Isaac... This game is sorta like that.
Lots of items to collect and discover, randomized 'dungeons'.
Very satisying to shoot things, overall a great cool game.
Many replayability and super awesome graphics.

Would highly recommend.

Great rogue-like that is still receiving weekly patches to tweak gameplay and add new content/features. This is not a bad thing imho, just an observation to show that it hasn't been abandoned despite still being in early access nearly 2 years on.

I haven't made it to the throne yet, but I'm happy to keep trying.
