What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Nuclear Throne was originally created during MOJAM 2013 as a tiny, two day prototype called 'Wasteland Kings'. We never stopped adding little things to the game, even as we moved on to other projects. We had livestreamed development during MOJAM, and decided to continue doing that while we worked on a full version of the game.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“The game will be in Early Access until it is done, at which point it'll launch on PC, Mac, Linux, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita. Until that point, we release weekly updates (each weekend) and livestream every Tuesday and Thursday frmo 1PM CET to 5PM CET on”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Nuclear Throne will feature seven full worlds of procedural action, four main bosses, tons of secrets, more than 75 weapons, 10 mutants, dozens of powerful mutations and local multiplayer.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The game is fully stable and playable, and has new additions made to it every weekend.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“If you want to wait until the game is done, it'll be available for $11,99 after development is complete. We're not doing any sales or bundles until the game is out of Early Access - we want people that really care about the game to buy and play it now. If you're curious as to how a game like this evolves or grows, now is the time to jump in.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We livestream development every Tuesday and Thursday from 1PM CET to 5PM CET, are very active in our forums and upload a new build every single weekend.”

Update #64 - Maintenance Week - Weekend of February 27th

New logo and 'cover art'! Cool, right? We all felt it was about time, and Justin and Paul worked super hard on getting these beautiful things ready for prime time.

Anyway, this is a big one, filled with tiny things! We decided to spend our time working on a lot of smaller items that've been on our to do list for a while, resulting in a pretty interesting update! We made some major changes to Shell weapons (more damage up close or after bouncing with Shotgun Shoulders), gave burst weapons way better support for mutations, added the first upgraded loop boss, made a new overpowered bolt weapon, fixed weapons not coming through portals with you, made Sharp Teeth cooler, etc. etc. etc. There's a lot.

  • Reworked the way Shell weapons work! They now get a significant damage boost when hitting things super close to the player, which is reactivated for two frames after bouncing with Shotgun Shoulders as well.
  • Burst weapons got a bit of a fix, now allowing Long Arms, Eagle Eyes, and Steroids lack of accuracy to work with them!
  • The very first, early test for upgraded loop bosses has been implemented. Good luck fighting Big Bandits.
  • We added an overpowered new Bolt Weapon.

  • The Proto Statue now has more health, will no longer get destroyed by big melee enemies, gets more HP on loops, and will be easier to break after activating.
  • Cluster Launcher spawns slightly later.
  • Horror's A Ultra spawns even less projectiles.
  • Horror's Throne Butt has been improved, now charging your beam up twice as fast.
  • Super Flak Cannon now deals more damage.
  • Hostile Horror will wait a bit longer after spawn before attacking.
  • Sharp Teeth no longer works on props.

  • Weapons should now properly come with you through portals!
  • Fixed the health of Allies with Rebel's A Ultra.
  • Plant can no longer one-shot things with a ton of health with the saplings.
  • Big Dog now always wakes up!
  • Steroids no longer gets "MAX MELEE AMMO" popups with Throne Butt.
  • Horror's beam should no longer push enemies through walls.
  • Allies should no longer get damage from most Impact Wrist corpses.
  • Broken Walls now show up on B Floors as well.
  • There will no longer be walls spawned on top of the Proto Statue.
  • Big Rads are no longer attracted to unactivated Proto Statues.
  • IDPD grenades can now be hit away with a melee weapon.

  • Sharp Teeth now deals damage after a short, staggered delay, on the right frame of its animation.
  • The popup for "LEVEL 10!" now says "LEVEL ULTRA!".
  • Big Dog now shakes the screen when walking.
  • Trigger Fingers now shows a shine on your gun when triggered.
  • Improved and added some tips.
  • Fish now angles in his movement direction when using Throne Butt. This'll eventually get a custom animation!
  • The game Freezes slightly shorter when killing smaller enemies now.
  • Bullets now spawn their hit effects when hitting walls as well.

Whew, loads of stuff! This week we'll be at GDC, so there'll probably not be an update. Anyway, keep letting us know how y'all feel, and thanks a ton for playing!

Update #63 - Free Crowns - Weekend of February 20th

We took a week off for a medical emergency, but now we're back. For this week. But it's a Significant Update, so prepare yourselves!

For those of you who follow the games industry closely, next week is when pretty much anyone that has the ability to do so goes to San Francisco for the Game Developers Conference. That means our update schedule for the rest of February and start of March is going to be slowed down or non-existent.

To make sure there's plenty of interesting new things to play for y'all in that period, we've decided to implement a very significant thing to the game. As we slowly march towards 'feature-complete', the unlock systems are slowly starting to fall into place. That also means the loadout systems need to start existing, and a first version of that is what this week brings.

You can now start the game with any crown. We've built a terrible placeholder interface for this (we're actually planning a major interface overhaul after GDC), and made everything available to you from the start. In the final version of the game, you'll have to beat the game with a Crown in order to be able to start with that Crown.

This has more consequences than just "running with a crown". There'll be Crown Guardians and a Protochest in 3-2, there'll be Cursed Chests right from the start (they actually carry better weapons than normal Chests), and of course, there's a complimentary IDPD spawn in 1-1. Anyway, tons of interesting runs will come from that!

Other than some fixes (no more freezing), polish, and balancing, we've also implemented an option to swap weapons with Q again! This is a temporary solution until we implement properly customizable controls. One more thing: there's a new mutation, Open Mind. It gives you an extra Chest or Rad Canister on every level!

Have fun messing with those Crowns, and please let us know how broken things can get!

  • Loadout screen! Pick a Crown from the start by clicking the ugly icon on the right of the character select.
  • Q Swap option.
  • New mutation: Open Mind. We've renamed Racing Mind to Trigger Fingers, and Shotgun Fingers to Shotgun Shoulders.

  • Pop Rifle spawns sooner.
  • Weapons using tiny grenades spawn sooner.
  • Jock Missiles now explode a bit differently.

  • Fixed the freezes caused by IDPD spawns.
  • You can no longer get a HP Chest and Rad Canister on the same level.

  • New silhouettes for locked characters.
  • Updated Crown Vault tiles.
  • Rain now looks cool in Slow Motion.
  • Updated the trail for Plasma weapons.
  • Nukes now have a cool booster flame.
  • Renamed one of the Horror Ultras.
  • You now drag some flames behind you when Boiling Veins is triggered.
  • Steroids now also spawns curse particles when holding the cursed weapon in his secondary hand.

Finally, we've started with a final pass on the game branding. You'll notice new key art on the store and elsewhere. As we rev up towards completing, all of our marketing materials and key art will get a final pass, including the logo itself. We're super excited to be headed towards something we can see in the distance with you all. Keep sending us that feedback!

Since this review has been made in the game's early access, it might be changed in the future as the updates come and go. Many things will change but I don't think my opinion about this game is one of those things.

Nuclear Throne is an action shoot em' up roguelike game made by Vlambeer, where your objective is to reach the Nuclear Throne, your main enemy in the game.

Some people might not know this, but the game actually has a storyline, although it's not the most detailed one.

Humanity messed up with things and the world is nearly destroyed, although things still managed to live in such conditions. Along with creatures being mutated (and a human as well, this being Steroids), portals started to appear and those started teleporting mutants around the wasteland.

A mutant called "Proto Mutant" discovered a place called The Palace, a place that is set to keep the world's balance, to keep it stable and we all know that's not the current case. Whenever a mutant stands up and gains strength enough to be able to do something against this mess that the world is, it gets sucked into a portal and disappear.

Other mutants heard about this myth and about the Nuclear Throne as well, which if destroyed, the world will get stabilized again, thus the game begins... .

It's simple and it also has a lot to be implemented, I'd say it's a little bit cliche considering it's a post-apocalyptic game but check it in the game's Wikia for some more details. There's nothing much more to say considering the current state of the game.

The star of the show, I'd say! This game is similar to the well-known Binding of Isaac, although with many more things happening at the same time. Controls are easy to understand and you're not going to find problems getting used to them. The start of the game might be a little bit boring, but if you manage to pass through some levels, it gets really fun and also, a complete mess.

Sadly, the game lacks of online Multiplayer, only offering you the local Multiplayer, which is not a bad thing, you can play with your father, brother, maybe some friends? I don't know, but if you're forever alone person like me, you won't be able to do much about it. I'm not completely sure if Vlambeer is planning on adding it, but let's hope so. If the game is already fun alone, I wonder how it's gonna look like with a friend!

Although I played most of the game with the music turned off, I paid attention to it when I first played the game, and just like how Vlambeer did with Gun Godz, the soundtrack is awesome. The mutants' voices fit them well, the guns effects and enemies voices too. They're actually saying things, you just don't understand it. Look it up!

I've always been a fan of pixelated graphics, the sprites are well-made, the scenarios are great and suit the enemies a lot. If you're one of those kids that only care about super realistic graphics like Battlefied, Crysis and stuff, this game won't suit your requirements.

One of the things I almost forgot to point out, although it's probably the most important, which is the game's difficulty... I've seen people downvote this game just because of it and I won't blame them, it really is a hard one. If you're into easy games only and you don't want to rage, this is NOT the thing for you, go try something else or you'll probably waste your money.

It's a "short" game and you are going to die A LOT, I assure you, if this game didn't have a great replay value, it would be absolute sh*t. If you liked playing it for the first time, you won't get enough of it for a long time, still tons of fun even after hours of gameplay.

Although the game is in its early access, I highly recommend you to give it a try if you're a fan of the genre, even if you're hesitant about the early access part. It's a great game and it has great potentianl. If you know the abovementionted Binding of Isaac and you're looking for a bit more "breathtaking" game, this is for you.

Please, let me know what you think about my review and point out all the typos that I've made. I really want to make good reviews and for that to work I need to know my flaws, but also the qualities, tks!

Try though I might to be original and humouros, I find the easiest way to describe this game is like Binding of Isaac but better and more difficult. And with guns. And cops. And fish. And a lot more bullets.

Nuclear Throne has quick and natural progression that promotes fast paced but logical gameplay with a plethora of characters lending themselves to different playstyles, as well as a satisfying arsenal of weapons that range from the simple to the absurd. Whether you're running around litearlly as a headless chicken or spawning an armada of men with machine guns to p̶l̶a̶y̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶ ̶g̶a̶m̶e̶ ̶f̶o̶r̶ ̶y̶o̶u̶ assist your twitchy ramapge to the Throne, each character manages to feel unique despite being exactly the same for all intensive purposes. There is a range of enemies, bosses and environments, a considerable list of perks (mutations and crowns) that can dramatically influence a playthrough depending on your choices, and 90% of them are well balanced, with a few exceptions that fall off a little late game, but still provide a good boost early.

At times the level generation, weapon spawns and mutation selection may frustrate you, but the game has very little in the way of artifical difficulty (Except for Little Hunter - he really needs a trigger warning on that jumpscare) Once you get past it's initial learning curve, Nuclear Throne becomes and incredibly fun, satisfying and, at times, humourous experience. The soundtrack that acompanies the game is phenominal, and whilst being very pixely, it's style is unique enough to not seem 'retro for the sake of retro lol aren't we cool'.

That, and you can spam airhorns as a rapping illuminati Gun God from Venus. It's MLG as ♥♥♥♥, you plebby scrubs. If you squint, the Raditaion Canisters look like Mountain Dew.

And don't forget, FISH  CAN  ROLL.

So I finished 5_3, and there was this Gatling Bazooka on the ground.

I've never tried or seen it, so I was tempted to try it out on the wall.

I held my Left Mouse Button.

As I was having fun with all the missiles, the Gatling Bazooka was actually firing too fast until all the missiles hit each others tips, and one by one the missiles exploded until the last and nearest missile, which I fired recently, exploded then I died.

10/10 would use gatling bazooka again

Nuclear Throne is the type of game you discover at 3 in the morning sitting in your steam library because a friend gave it to you out of no where. You soon play the game for like 15 minutes and then you realize how beautifully difficult and addicting this game can really be. Soon enough it becomes a part of you, you eat, sleep, and breathe nuclear throne. You want to beat this game in one sitting at 3 in the morning, but you cant, your weak, your tired, and your body wont allow it. Nuclear Throne is one of those games you say "one more turn" too. In conclusion... 69420/911 "Like Call of Duty but with mutants." - IGN

If you like fast-paced, randomly generated rogue-likes, then this is the perfect game for you. Nuclear Throne is another great game by one of my favorite developers, Vlambeer. You're a mutant stuck in the wasteland with all of your friends, and you've all heard the tale of the Nuclear Throne. Some think it's a bunch of baloney, others think that it really exists, and a few mutants are going to go out of their way to get to it. You are one of those few mutants. One of those few mutants, who is also really well balanced with the other mutants in terms of power.

NOTE: If the character's name has a star (*) next to it in the list, then it means it's one of my favorites.

FISH*: Once a police officer, now turned into a scaly fish-man on the last day before his retirement. He gets more ammo from all sources of the stuff, and can roll out of danger.

CRYSTAL: A good mutant for the new players, Crystal gets more HP and can shield herself to block almost all attacks. After all, "Crystal can handle this."

EYES: He has a deep backstory, according to the devs, but he doesn't have a mouth to speak about it. He can see much clearer in the dark levels like the Sewers, and he can use telekinesis to drag enemies towards him and projectiles away from him.

MELTING*: The wind hurts. Everything hurts. Melting is tired. Melting starts out with 2 HP (keep in mind, most projectiles do 3 damage), but to balance that out, he gets more radiation (in other words, experience), and can blow up corpses for immense damage potential. You should really get acquainted with the game before you try him out!

PLANT: He's extra fast, and can also trap enemies with vine snares. KILL KILL KILL.

YUNG VENUZ*: Ladies and gentlemen, the one and only Gun God! He has a faster rate of fire, as well as being able to fire two shots at once (with double the reload time, of course). Also, he doesn't even die. Whenever you reach 0 HP, he just gets frustrated with himself and goes home to his mansion.

STEROIDS*: He was the only human who came prepared. He predicted the apocalypse and pumped himself full of steroids to survive. Every weapon he holds is fully automatic and he can dual-wield, but he has less accuracy to compensate.

ROBOT: An automaton straight from the future. He finds better weapons earlier, and can eat guns if he doesn't like 'em (robots can digest anything, according to the game).

CHICKEN: A samurai chicken. Enough said. She's another good mutant to start with (yes, SHE), as she starts out with her good ol' sword and can slow down time!

REBEL*: A bandit who detached from the group, she's found home around the campfire of mutants. She's probably the most fun to play as if you can get her late game. She heals when she goes through portals, and she can spawn allies to help her.

ROGUE: Similar to Rebel, Rogue is a cop that, as her name says, went rogue and left the Interdimensional Police Department (I.D.P.D). As a result, she is constantly being hunted throughout the adventure by the po-po. To combat them, she comes equipped with a weapon she stole after leaving, the Portal Strike, which has potential for immense damage.

[DATA REDACTED]: A living blob of [DATA REDACTED], [DATA REDACTED] can fire a beam of [DATA REDACTED] to kill stuff. He's a secret!

-Replayability is off the charts!
-Graphics, gameplay, and music are all really enjoyable.
-Good variety of... everything!
-Nice team of developers.

-RNG can screw you over, and does so way too often.
-May be a bit too fast-paced for most people.

If you're a fan of rogue-likes, buy this game. Go. Buy it.

Don't keep staring at this review.

Shove your wallet in to the computer.

Nuclear Throne? More like Nostalgia Throne. This game reminds me so much of good old flash games I used to play on the internet when I was a kid. Something like "shoot 'em, loot 'em, fight the boss, hey more bad guys shoot 'em" kind of game. Multiple and somewhat memorable characters, the soundtrack is tending to be western and fits just fine with the environment you're in, and last but not least: it's a rogue-like game. Now apart from the characters, every gun/zone/ending is already unlocked, so you have no worries on that. Even though this game is still in "Early access", overall in stands of gameplay I'll give it an 8/10 sligthly off 9/10. The reason is because some projectiles seem to have an unfair/busted hitbox. From other standpoints, it's worth a 10/10, even in early access. Adding with the gameplay score, overall it's worth about a 9/10, maybe more, maybe less, this is one guy's review, the verdict and choice is at your will.

An insanely addictive over-head rogue-like shooter that I just didn't steal from the tags. You can choose from a variety of weapons in the actual game, like a bazooka, a laser pistol, or even a screwdriver. It reminds me of Hotline Miami, but with more bullets per screen and AI that doesn't turn a dime, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.

I also highly recommend trying out their other games, like Super Crate Box, Luftrausers, and Gun Godz. Please, please support this developer. They are a bunch of awesome people.
