Reviews

“Strip away all the punkish ingenuity piled on Nuclear Throne and you're left with this: a skin-fidgeting, hair-tingling battle of textures. Hard meets sticky. Bang meets squelch.”
Eurogamer

“It’s an anarchic thrash of a roguelike where everything goes boom or splat—or, more frequently, boom and splat.”
PC Gamer

“It’s a rapid-fire, deliciously crunchy randomized romp starring a cavalcade of characters from Vlambeer’s past.”

Nuclear Throne is a post-apocalyptic rogue-like shooter with cool story and nice music

Singleplayer & Multiplayer Singleplayer is very hard and request 100% from you, every mistake you make can be your the last one. NT don't know what is mercy when you first time start your run you need to learn good tactics, how work every weapon, how enemies attack you and also is randomly generated so every run is diffirent. There is no Multiplayer only local CO-OP but there is a amazing mod created by YellowAfterlife called "Nuclear Throne Together" which adds Online CO-OP for community

PROS

+ Soundtrack
Soundtrack is fantastic and full with emotions, seriously when i hear it i feel like i could kill everybody in the game

+ Achievements & Trading Cards
Hard and rewarding achievements are also cool addition, there is also something for people looking for nice backgrounds and emoticons

+ Randomly Generated Runs
Right now is something normal but very rare you can see really nice generated maps in the games, nuclear throne actually generate so good maps everytime i feel like they were designed by developers

+ Daily & Weekly
When you feel strong/bored enough you can try competition with players

+ Over 100 weapons....
14 characters....lots of enemies, bosses...

CONS

- Locked to 30 fps
You can't have 60 fps in the game if you would the game would be x2 faster than normal

- Bugs
Is a final product but still there are some unfixed bugs

I played 43 hours of this, counting upwards day by day, and I am regretting every single second, I am playing this piece of garbage. But now to explain this, rather bad sounding beginning.

This game, is great. Great at the gameplay, the roguelike, the weapons, not so much the enemies but still good enough. Another thing its good at is making me frustrated like hell. I have played so many times, so many hours AND I AM STILL NOT PAST THE SEVENTH GOD DAMN AREA! This game is good, its amazing! COULDNT LOVE OR HATE IT MORE!

Seriously if you are a masochist, buy it. You are going to love it. You played Dark Souls and love it? Play this! You get about the same "GIT GUD" garbage.

But now to the real thoughts:

This game is good. It actually is amazing. I love it dearly and I couldnt hate it more either. It is like Binding of Isaac if you take all the fun parts out and replace it with a literal bullethell from Touhou. Remember the Mom fight or Hush? And how hard they were? Now think of that in every single level past the first 4. Actually even the first 3 level can contain that. And I am not talking about a tiny room with one boss doing this. No, the level is big and filled with enemies that shoot at you and attack you if you are too close to them as well. And if you manage not to get hit, you will be happy. This however will most likely not be the case with all types of enemies running around, hitting you as you touch them.

All in all, I give this game a "good" on my scale. It only reaches good because its frustrating as hell. Even more than "Binding of Isaac". Like, I didnt think there would be a game out there like that...

Now back into the hell of this game...
Urgh...

"Do not be fooled by other Nuclear Clones.
This the real deal, pls hold the phones!
I started out a wastland king, now I am all alone.
Rollin all the way to that Nuclear Throne.
"
-HPV from the FAV

This game has changed how I view video games.
Just like Luftrausers, it rewards you every time you start a new run.
Vlambeer feeds you on a metaphysical level.
One of the best soundtracks in all media.

Must own.
Triple dip.
Get you some.

Nuclear Throne is a top-down roguelike shooter, and a relatively good one at that; you can drag the window size to fit any resolution you so desire. In terms of gameplay, you select a character, run around, shoot enemies, dodge bullets, pick up better guns, repeat. A tried and true formula that works very well with games of its genre.

I'm on the fence about this game, and if I could give it a "neutral" review, I would; since Steam only has "Recommended" vs "Not Recommended", I decided to lean towards the latter (therefore allowing all the rabid fanboys to downvote this without a second thought to help combat their own insecurities). Whatever helps you sleep at night, it doesn't change my review and what I have to say about the game.

The gameplay is all fine and good, but this game honestly feels more luck-based than skill-based. That's not to say this game is not skill-based; utilizing cover to avoid bullets, then shooting them at opportune moments is a key element of this game. I say the game is luck based because of primarily two things; the levelling system, and the procedural generation of each stage.

The levelling system is very straightforward; kill enemies, collect their exp drops, level up, select one of four randomly provided power ups at the end of the stage, continue. This is all fine and good, except for how (obviously) some power-ups are much better than others. Several times have I been starved for an ability that would prove most useful because the RNG failed to provide.

As for the procedural generated levels, several times have I had a somewhat decent run instantly taken away from me by spawning in the next level surrounded by enemies with absolutely no cover, obliterating me within seconds. Regardless of who you are and how long you've played these kinds of games, no amount of 'skill' can allow someone to pop into a brand new level and instantly avoid a slew of bullets coming from literally every direction while effectively fighting back. Sometimes the level spawns many enemies into a tight room with a 1-block entryway, making it almost impossible to clear it out without taking some form of damage. To add insult to injury in such scenarios, many enemies move very quickly and do collision damage. My use of the term 'procedural generation' is stretching it for this game; the only thing inherently procedural about it is the fact that there's never a part of the map that's inaccessible in some form.

Comparing other 'difficult' games (such as Spelunky, Hotline Miami, and Super Meat Boy), you die a lot, but each death in those games feels like it was your fault that you died, and you learn something from it that can be used to improve your next attempt. Nuclear Throne does not provide that. Each death feels cheap and the only thing you can really tell yourself in terms of improvement if you decide to try again is "get better". Have you ever asked a teacher for help, and they simply told you to "do better"? I have. He was subsequently fired. I've seen and played games that are hard for the right reasons; Nuclear Throne is hard for the wrong reasons.

Of course, all of what I said can be "expected of roguelikes", and "if you don't like that kind of game, don't play it". Roguelike fans call it art, I call it poor game design.

In conclusion, Nuclear Throne isn't a bad game by any means; it just has some glaring flaws that really take away from its long-term enjoyability. After all, only a masochist would enjoy repeatedly attempting something, only to result in failure with little to no sense of progress.

♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ fun

I am very ♥♥♥♥ at this game though. I should try to get better at it.

If you refuse to get a chest or a rad container, in the next level the reward will be higher.
Risk vs reward or delayed gratification vs immediate benefit. Fun.

Top down rogue-like shooter... We already have tonnes of these wandering about... HOWEVER, this is a very good one. A interesting setting, nice artwork, smooth controls and unforgiving but not unfair gameplay. It has bullet-hell gameplay, unlockable characters, unlimited playability and some sweet character- and gun-design.
It's less heavy in the upgrades/abilities department like you would come to expect after games like TBOI, however with mutations you get with each level-up and characters that really play different from eachother you don't miss it. Also don't expect having the game get easier because you unlocked stuff... the game will only become easier if you become better and learn about the different characters, enemies, guns and mutations. Oh and a really nice soundtrack!

Even though this game is incredibly difficult it is also very satisfying as it conveys a great sense of progress. If you put in some time the levels you used to find nearly impossible start to feel manageable and even easy, and it all comes down to your own increase in ability and skill rather than any character progression system. Embarrasingly, after 18 hours I have yet to reach the throne (I'll use the excuse that I'm playing with a controller rather than a kb/m), but even so I am far from giving up and far from being bored. A must play if you are a fan of the rogue-lite/top-down shooter genre.
