AVGN Adventures, a game where you play different levels that are a mix of horrible game AVGN has reviewed. There are lots of cameos, cool powerups, characters, and lots of challenge. This game is probably harder than Mega Man games. Also you CAN'T save if you play on Normal or the mode below it, just how NES games could'nt save, well most of them. You can only save on Easy mode... I recommened this game for AVGN fans but if you're not a fan I'm sure you'll like this game, just prepare to die 1,000,000,000,000 times.

AVGN Adventures tries to be the kind of game the Nerd goes crazy over because it is horrible. And it is. The game is unnecessarily unfair because of floaty controls, inaccurate hit detection, and absolutely annoying respawning enemies.
Or my favourite, the one-hit death blocks.

Just because the game is aware of how horrible it is and criticizes its own difficulty in fourth wall breaking dialogue -- which, to be fair, does match the spirit of the AVGN perfectly -- does not make it a good game.

Unlike actual hard games from the NES era, think of the Megamans and the like, this game simply frustrates the hell out of me and gives me no incentive to want to continue other than seeing more AVGN style death quotes.

Skip it or get it only on a huge discount.

I've beaten the game, and let me tell you. This game is no cake walk.
Let's start out with me saying I am a big AVGN fan, but I am NOT gonna give this game a 10/10
I feel it deserves more of a 7.5-8.5/10.
-The game feels nice and fluent with Xbox 360 controller.
-There is many hidden characters and cameos to find in the game.
-The game is in the style of retro video games, and has many nerd references.
-The game is very rewarding(not kidding when I say I did a 30 minute dance after beating the final boss).
-The game has a difficulty option(which I am surprised it did thanks to the Ghosts n' Goblins game).
Those are just a few of the Pros.
-The humor in this game is nothing but AVGN references, nothing else.
-The Game's hidden characters aren't necessary, they are only used to find other cameos. You can beat the whole game with Nerd.
-The game holds extremely cheap deaths, such as the level Boo! Haunted House. You play tunnel vision, and there are death blocks EVERYWHERE.
-The bosses seem to all be the same except for few, they all seem to fly around(Satan,Unicorn,Fred ♥♥♥♥s,Where Did you Learn to Fly?) and others.
-The games cameos make little to no sense except for few. Some that make sense are ♥♥♥♥ Pickle, and Pat The NES Punk. However there is random people such as Angry Joe, and Egoraptor. People who never have been seen in AVGN episodes.
Overall, I recommend this game if you enjoy the 2D platformers still and are up for a challenge.
But let's be honest, if this game didn't have the nerd in it, nobody would have bought it.

Well now that that's out of the way, AVGN Adventures is a well-made love letter to all things AVGN. It's filled with all of the things that make the Nerd the Nerd. He complains about various design choices along the way, and when you die you're given a randomly-generated complicatedly vulgar insult about how much he hates the game. Levels, enemies, bosses, and even the pause menu music are based on games he's reviewed. There are plenty of cameos from the Nerd's fellow Internet personalities, and various characters that have been on the show. And the final level and final boss are exactly what and who they should be.

Plus, you know, the level design's pretty darn good, too.

AVGNA is designed to delight through the frustration. It's not I Wanna Be the Guy hard, but it's a tough-as-nails platformer. And what would you expect, considering that this is not only an homage to the Nerd, but also to the frustratingly difficult and poorly-designed games that he's played over the years. But therein lies the mastery in this game. A good parody should include the things that made the subject awful, but without actually being awful itself. It's a challenge, but AVGNA pulls it off without breaking stride.

I mean, it's not perfect. Most of the stages contain a number of the same enemies, only reskinned to suit that stage. Which, of course, is all part of the big parody. But the invincible things that fly in infinite circles start to get pretty tired by the end.

Also, the final boss will rock your world. Difficulty is gradual in the game. You can play the stages in any order you want (and can revisit completed ones, if you so choose), but if you play them in the order they appears on the stage select screen, you will find a pleasant steady increase in difficulty as you go. That said, the final boss was much tougher than anything else I faced. I got him eventually. But man did that take FAR more tries than any obstacle before it.

The music is great, and whatever you hear perfectly suits the situation you're hearing it over. The game is visually appealing and colorful. Controls are responsive, which is a must. The Nerd shoots as fast as you can tap the button, meaning speedier button mashers will have an easier time with most of the bosses (if I had just gotten two more taps in, I could have killed the first boss during his very first vulnerable period). The four different characters (three of whom must be unlocked) each have their uses, and I found myself using each one in different situations over the course of the game. There could be more powerups. By my count, there are four, and one of those can ONLY be used by the Nerd himself.

Also, you get to kill Navi 10/10GOTYAY

I'm working on a video-review of this game, and I have already beated almost the entire game (all I got left is the secret last level), but I think I've played long enough to make a Steam review of the game, and talk about it. As usual, I'm gonna take the bad things the game has out of the way first:

First and foremost, this game can be hard. It depends on your skills on these kind of games. Have you played the old Castlevania games? The 2D Metroids? Megaman? Or even f#cking Super Mario World? If you have not, then you're going to die more than any nooblord in the PC version of Dark Souls, trying to play without the patches, AND USING THE KEYBOARD INSTEAD OF A CONTROLLER. I'M NOT KIDDING. Of course, the game has many difficulty modes, depending of how much of a casual you are, but I got to the last level of the game in almost 4 hours, trying to find everything, and in normal difficulty. Of course I died a lot of times, but you're going to die, it's how this game goes.

The second thing that it might make you regret buying it, is the lenght of the game. It is entertaining and fun to play it, but it's not that long. Dude, It took 4 hours to get to the final level, and I'm pretty ♥♥♥♥ing good at these things, it might take you 6 or so to beat the entire game. You can of course replay the game in other difficulties and all that stuff...But there's not that much reason to replay it, unless you enjoy torturing yourself like the Nerd. And that's the last bad thing the game might have:

If you're not a fan of the Angry Video Game Nerd, or you don't watch his videos, then you're not going to understand shi#t. Pretty much 90% of the game are references to his videos and old-school videogame reviews. ALL THE BOSSES ON THE GAME, ARE THINGS THAT HAVE BEEN SEEN ON HIS VIDEOS (except the Giant-claw, I believe). Before picking up the game, you should check out his Angry Video Game Nerd videos, get some pop-corn, some Rolling Rock beers, have a good time watching him destroy those putrid mother of an #ss games. That said...

This game is BALLS TO THE WALL! It's been long since I found a game with ACTUAL CHALLENGE! I find games like Dark Souls a walk on the park, but this game actually ♥♥♥♥ed me off at random times, because it's as ruthless as games used to be, back on those times. What, you're a casual and a p#ssy? Play it on Easy, you have infinite lifes, double the HP, but in normal, you can take 3 hits before you blow up to pieces, and can only die 30 times before getting a Game over screen. The game over screen doesn't actually make you play from the start of the game, just sends you back to the level select screen, so it's fair, you can beat any level on your first try in 30 levels, if you're competent and don't f#ck up too much. In harder difficulties there's a limit of how much Game Over screens you can take before it actually ENDS the game for you, so yeah, pick your poison motherf#cker.

The graphics, along with the music, are the best thing of the game, everything feels like a mix between NES and SNES graphics, and the soundtrack is just AMAZINGLY AMAZING! I won't lie, the theme for "Future F#ckballs 2010" is probably the best one so far, SPECIALLY WHEN YOU MIX HEAVY METAL ON IT:

The Boss themes are also quite good, an 8 bit remix of the classic AVGN theme.

The game is also quite truthful to the Nerd style: Everything screams b#ll♥♥♥♥ and swears, he breaks the 4th wall a lot of times, and the Death Screens manage to make me laugh without any reason. They're just random generated text that makes no sense, but stuff quite fun to watch ♥♥♥♥ like this:

The game is worth like 10€ or so, you might want to wait for a sale...But for less than 6€? You better pick it up, you #sshole.

This game is "A sh#t sandwich made with Super Mecha Death Christ 2000 BC Beta B#tch's fecal matter, mixed up with Fred F#ck's atonic farts on a jar, and thrown into the sun / 10".

The game is fun but I just don't enjoy the repetitive "You're an x oozing out of a y's z" kind of insult that's lathered on top of it. Once in a while would be ok, but the death screen is just a mess of rapidly boring profanity. If you don't mind that kind of thing, then read this as a recommendation.

Game is not playable on Windows XP with DirectX 9.0 as advertised. After the logos, the game goes black and I can't see anything. I can still navigate the menus, but I'm flying blind.

This issue has persisted for a long time now and even though it's been reported, the developers continually ignore it.

An excellent platformer. The controls are solid, the levels are semi-varied/creative, the music is flawless, and the secrets are satisfying to find. It is a borderline rage game on the first playthrough, though, as there are a lot of tightly timed maneuvers that'll cause you to die and feel as though you were gypped. The bosses are a tad lackluster, too, as they follow the traditional NES format and have a really, REALLY predictable pattern, with a form of artificial difficulty coming from the speed the boss moves at, and the tight space you have to maneuver in.

It's definitely worth its price, though. A very nice platformer for this generation, on par with Shovel Knight.

I pre-ordered this game after hearing some of the soundtrack and watching an interview with Craig (one of the developers) before it's release about how challenging the game would be. I was already an AVGN fan, the music sounded great, the game looked fun, and I'm always up for a good challenge. I would recommend the game for others like myself, but there's plenty of different gamers, so I'll try to elaborate to help you decide if you want to purchase it for yourself.

Music- The music in this game is by 'distant' and I enjoyed it so much that I actually purchased the soundtrack as soon as I saw it available. I still listen to it on my iPod. It's the kind of music that makes you want to keep playing the game until you reach your objective. I would recommend the music in this game to any type of gamer.

Control- Some of the funniest AVGN moments are when he makes fun of how bad the control is in a video game, but they played it smart when programming this game. Coming from someone who used an XBOX 360 controller to play the game on PC, I can say that the controls are well placed and very smooth. Once you understand what all of the buttons do, there's really hardly anything to complain about if you die, assuming everything runs smooth on your PC.

Graphics- Don't expect modern graphics here. This game was meant to look like the 2D sidescrollers that AVGN usually reviews. It seems to be a mix of 8 bit and 16 bit and it fits perfectly for the type of game this is. Unless graphics are the main reason you purchase a video game, these will do fine. They actually remind me of playing NES games growing up.

Fun- As an AVGN fan and someone who grew up playing these type of 2D sidescrollers, I really enjoyed the experience. There's some moments in the game that are from AVGN episodes that will make you laugh. If you grew up playing 2D sidescrollers but are not familiar with AVGN, a lot of things in the game will not make any sense to you. I don't know if this would ruin the game for you or make you interested in becoming familiar with AVGN.

Gameplay- As far as the enemies go, there are some that have the same pattern but just look different depending on which level you're on. This wasn't a problem for me, however, because the different level designs and number of different obstacles provided enough variety to keep the game from becoming boring. There's 8 main levels after the tutuorial that you can play in any order that you choose before unlocking the final level. There's 3 characters you can play as besides The Nerd if you find them. Each character has different movement and attacks which keeps things interesting. There's also some powerups scattered around each level, and a special gun upgrade that only The Nerd can use. Lots of the deaths in this game come from failing to pass obstacles rather than enemies. If you're impatient and are easily upset, you'll probably be frustrated from dying so much while you're learning the levels.

Challenge- Okay, this is probably the most important point in deciding if this game is for you. AVGN complains about how hard some of the games are that he reviews, but challenge is something I love. If you're a perfectionist, you better make sure that you're dedicated enough before you buy this, or you'll be very frustrated. The most difficult difficulty setting on this game is called YOLO. Unlocking this mode will be challenge enough for most gamers, but YOLO is when things get serious. If you have a bad heart, then you shouldn't even try this unless you're attempting to commit suicide. You can't get hit at all or it's game over. This means beating the tutorial level, the 8 main levels plus 8 bosses, and the final level plus the final boss without getting touched. All this must be done without saving. If you're not speedrunning or wasting time, it should take about 37-40 minutes to complete the game on YOLO. The best part is that the developers actually had the guts to make an achievement for beating YOLO. My heart never beated so fast in a video game as when I would make it to the final stage thinking about how if I get touched by anything that I have to go through another 35 minutes of perfection after all of the time I just spent only to get killed and start over. If you're dedicated and love challenges, this one's yours. Casual gamers will not be finishing this one.
