NEW TOOL LIVE! - Takedown Red Sabre Level Editor (beta)

March 6th, 2014

With approval from Epic Games, we have released a beta version of the Takedown Level Editor. Content includes all the environment assets, Killhouse maps, and HQ map (as reference to make your own TD maps, and hook up the game types/modes).

Due to time constraints, no official documentation is available yet. We'll do our best to answer questions and build documentation organically with the community. Anyone well versed in UDK/Unreal should be able find their way around just fine.

How to install:

Filter Steam Library > Tools > Search Takedown > Install Takedown Red Sabre Level Editor (beta).

About the Game

The player that takes things slow, aims carefully, and plans their moves right will overcome the player who runs in with guns blazing. Close-quarters battle brings the fight inside, as you would see SWAT teams or SOF units taking down small numbers of dangerous adversaries. Non-linear environments allow for multiple routes and tactics and add replayability.

In recent years, shooters have become homogenized. There used to be a wide range of different games to choose, from run-and-gun action titles to slow-paced tactical shooters focusing on strategy and tactics, but now most shooters follow the same model of big set pieces, regenerating health, linear levels, and “cinematic experiences.” The realistic tactical shooters with in-depth planning have almost entirely disappeared in recent years.

This game focuses on realistic weapons modeling, squad based play, in a close-quarters battle setting. To succeed in this game you need to take things slow, study your environment, and execute flawlessly. If you get shot, there are consequences. You won’t be hiding behind a wall waiting for your health to regenerate. If a team member goes down, you will have to assess the situation and reallocate team members if necessary to complete the mission. Don’t expect all of the tools and plans to be forced fed to you – it is up to the player to ensure their team is equipped and ready for the tasks at hand. With features such as realistic bullet penetration, accuracy, and recoil, choosing the proper weapons, ammunition, armor, and gear for the mission is up to you, so choose carefully.

Gameplay modes include single player, co-op, and competitive multiplayer. If you are a fan of old school shooters where thinking meant more than running and gunning or perks, or if you are just looking for something different in your shooter games experience, this is the game for you.

Takedown: Red Sabre was the single bigest dissapointment of the past 2 years for me. As a huge fan of games like Swat, Rainbow Six, and Counter Strike I was looking forward to this the moment I saw it. A revival of the Tactical Shooter genre? Oh wow, count me in! With devs who worked on Tom Clancy games and freaking HALO?! WHAT! Count me in, this has GOT to be good...right?

Boy were we suckered. Promises of being the revival of a long dead genre turned into not just a bad game, but beyond that. This is simply one of the worst products I have ever bought, and it pains me to say that. On release it was a buggy mess with features not working left and right. What we saw in demo's and videos couldn't possibly be the same thing as this released final game, but it was.

Controls are clunky. The AI is terrible. The guns shoot and feel even worse. The maps are nice but that's all irrelevant when the mechanics of the game are awful. Steamcharts says the game has an average of 16 people online at peak times in the past 30 days, with an all time peak of 1,071 on release, which was only September 20, 2013, about 2 months exactly ago. The game is already dead.

I seriously felt suckered and swindled out of $15, prying on peoples hope for a revival of the genre. This game was such a disaster and as a result of it, I will never blindly give money to people (kickstarter), or pre-order a game again. Instead of this, spend $10 for Rainbow Six 3 Gold, and use the extra $5 to go buy a cheeseburger

[Edit, and of my 3 hours played, probably about 2 and a half of those hours were trying to get the game to work period.]

They sold an unfinished game, but advertised it as finished. Its really bad. And it also damages similar games' reputations, when they are much better. They did make small fixes after about a week of it being out, so we could ACTUALLY USE THE SERVER BROWSER, but by the time it was done, no one played. And for good reason.

I pre-purchased this pile of poo. Never again.

This game should not be classified as a game, as it is an unfinished product a later alpha at best, if you have the misfortune of owning it, look in the games main folder it says "Early Access" that should tell you the amount of effort alone.

The AI can range from completely stupid, to unrealistically accurate, the game is riddled with various menu bugs, such as when you choose a level you don't always get the level you choose, and in addtion the inventory system rarely saves. I could never recomend this "Game" to anyone espically when the games it clams to be based off are vastly superior, even now Swat 4 is a better game, a 2004 game is better then this, even Swat 3 is better because it's AI was at least competent as far as team AI goes, IE: Checking corners by leaning.

And the biggest culprit of all to this bad game is the devlopers who blame their community for "Not being hardcore enough" they don't even have the gumption to admit their game is severely underdevloped compaired to the games they "Based" their game off of. If your thinking of buying this, just don't there are at most 3 servers if you are lucky, mostly none though.

WARNING!! **** DO NOT BUY ****

While this game is relatively inexpensive, it is priced far too high for its level of quality, and should be avoided. The game was not finished prior to launch and it remains laden with bugs and missing/broken features. Serellan (the developer) was never able to get dynamic shadows to function properly, even with the help of the game engine's developer, so the game's lighting is a bit off. Physics are a joke, characters do some strange things when they're killed and ragdoll physics take over, and the resulting odd behavioir is probably the only positive thing about the game because it might give you a laugh. Artificial intelligence of the enemy was "better than Chuck Norris" ridiculous when the game launched, and friendly AI is borked in the opposite direction, effectively eliminating any sort of "tactical" feel to the game. It plays like a really bad knockoff of a really bad game. Spend your money on something developed by someone that is capable and willing to produce a quality indie title. Setting $15 on fire and watching it burn would be more entertaining and worthwhile.

* NOTE: It appears the new Steam tagging system is subject to heavy censorship/moderation. Every negative "popular" tag seems to have been scrubbed. Do publishers & game developers have a say as to what tags are ok and what must be removed? I sure hope not...

FPS Guru - Pax Prime'13 Most Innovative
The Most Innovative award is yet another indie title. One of the great things about indie games is they always manage to be unique and bring something new to the table. They're able to take the risks that triple A companies aren't. This is a company that has made the decision to skip following the generic shooter genre, let's get rid of levels, noob tubing, and throw in tactics and strategy instead. Serellan LLC certainly deserves this award for their tactical shooter, Takedown: Red Sabre. Takedown: Red Sabre encourages the player to communicate with their team mates and take on each mission differently, in their hope to survive. Don't expect to be running and gunning down the hallways, because there's no respawning. It's a pleasure to see a return to the tactical shooter and what appears to be a successful return. Once I got my hands on Takedown: Red Sabre it was difficult to stop.
