[Development] Crew Reinforcements

It takes weeks to build a ground vehicle. It takes years to train a professional. Vehicle crews and maintenance teams are the most valuable resource in any player’s slots.

But the realities of the game dictate their own rules. Every day on the War Thunder battlefields, far more vehicles are destroyed than ever met their end in real war, and a vehicle that is very survivable in real life may fail to show its virtues so clearly when it comes under a hail of fire. This mostly concerns heated battles on the ground.

We strive to recreate historical reality wherever this doesn’t oppose simple logic and exciting gameplay, and the survivability of ground vehicles in battle is an important factor that directly influences how much fun people have in battles. But how do we adapt our vehicles for far more deadly battles than those that took place in real life, without touching the tanks’ carefully recreated characteristics? The answer is simple: crews! It is people that control tanks, and the tank is considered lost only after the majority of its crew are killed. We’ve been looking into various options that would allow you to enjoy the battle for longer without losing the sense of a true conflict.

These options included medkits, which would allow you to return a member of your crew to life, but many of you considered this mechanic not entirely suitable for the realities of Simulator, Realistic and even Arcade battles in War Thunder. There was a literal downpour of suggestions for an alternative.
We’ve considered the most logical of your suggestions in developing this latest mechanism, and now we present a new mechanic – crew drafting.

Do things look bad? The tanker is already on the way!

In a large upcoming update, tankers in all modes will become acquainted with a new mechanic with which a tank still capable of contributing to the fight mechanically can prepare for the next skirmish with the enemy by replacing a knocked-out crew member with a reserve soldier.

How does this mechanic work?
Just as you requested, we’ve changed not only the crew member revival mechanism, but also introduced variety to how the mechanic works in different modes.

In Arcade mode, you can request a draft at any point on the map, and if there is only one tanker left in the tank, the draft is requested automatically and all you have to do is hope that the soldier arrives in time. It’s all quite simple, the only thing you have to consider is that the vehicle cannot move between your request for a crew member and the time the crew member arrives.

It’s a little more complicated in Realistic and Simulated modes. Here, you can only draft a tanker at a safe capture point that belongs to your team, and you can only draft a crew member manually. This is in contrast to Arcade mode, only a battle-capable vehicle with a minimum of two living crew members can draft a new crew member. It will also be impossible to move while the replacement is being fulfilled.
Crew drafting will become available after you research the ground vehicle modification of the same name. Each individual replacement tanker draft costs Silver Lions.

The tanker is ready to move whenever you request it.

We thank all players who helped by offering suggestions for the development of this new mechanic, and we hope that ground battles in all modes will become more fun because of it. Good luck!

[Development] Ki-100

We are pleased to present another new addition to War Thunder in the upcoming major update –
the Japanese Ki-100, the most recent development of the Ki-61 line of military fighters.

The story of the Japanese military Ki-100 fighter is remarkable. As a result of the Allied bombing of Japanese armament production lines, an engine production factory in Akashi was destroyed. This factory produced Ha-140 engines for Ki-61 fighters. This left the Kawanishi Aircraft Company with 275 Ki-61 airframes, all bereft of engines. In the extremely harsh wartime conditions, such resource could not go unused, so the airframes were given a new ‘heart’ – the Mitsubishi Ha-112-II radial engine. The first aircraft, dubbed the Ki-100, took to the skies in February 1945, just two months after the new engine was first installed in the Ki-61 airframe.

For more info, pictures, and video of this aircraft, be sure to read the full article in the Official War Thunder Forums!

War Thunder is a free-to-play, cross-platform MMO combat game for Windows, Linux, Mac and PlayStation®4 dedicated to military vehicles used in and around World War II and the Korean War. In War Thunder, you can take part in major battles on land, in the air, and at sea, fighting with real players from all over the world in a continuously developing environment.

War Thunder already offers a highly detailed experience in military aviation and ground forces combat, giving players access to a Guinness World Record breaking number of aircraft, as well as an abundance of tanks and other combat vehicles - and the number is constantly rising.

Alternatively, you can join the spearhead of armoured vehicles, fighting for dominance over the battlefield on the ground: Man a heavy tank with impressive armour and firepower, use the maneuverability of a medium or light tank to your advantage, or support your team by screening the skies with your anti aircraft vehicle - the choice is yours!

In the future, the game will also allow players to ‘set sail’ by commanding a variety of warships in the fight over the control of the world’s oceans, giving the game a truly epic scale.

Master your vehicles through both upgrades and personal experience in an environment that is constantly expanding and rewarding the personal skill of the player. Organise your efforts in one of the countless player squadrons and become an ace pilot or tanker - or both! What can i said other than it's a good game. Not Great but good.

Early on the game is great. Fun and unique. However when you reached tier 4 the grind is REAL! Repair cost are super expensive which is understanable since this is F2P after all.

My reconmendation is play the Russian fiirst as they are rather powerful that will get you some experiance to play other nation more effectively

I probably have around 500+ hours on this game before I added it in Steam, also I don't play ground forces and arcade battles.
  • Good graphics
  • Very realistic (Your wings can rip off at ligh speeds/Gs)
  • Manual Engine Control (You'll probably need a pilot's license lol)
  • Alot of planes to choose from from 5 different nations
  • Japanese planes have insane repair costs at later ranks
  • Russian/Soviet bias
  • Arcade battle is cancer go play Realistic or Simulator
  • You'll spend most of your time climbing at the start of the match

Play Germany or Russia.

Win Game.

Dont do what i did and slave through hell playing the US because it sucks you into a never ending spiral of addiction to the point that you cant even comprehend reality, you realise your mistake of playing allies by this point and you hate yourself for it, then you get to higher tiers and realise that it isnt that bad after all. Until the TU-4s rolled in and ♥♥♥♥ed everything and everyone.

7/10 - too many sekrit dokuments.

An enjoyable plane & tank combat game that strikes great balance between an arcade and a simulator. Newb-friendly controls help get into the game, while complex physics and damage model keep the skill ceiling high.

On the flipside, there is potential for pay2win, and late-tier progression is extremely grindy. Balance and matchmaking may also raise a brow or two.

The Good:
The game offers both easy and intuitive controls as well as complex physics with different degrees of realism. It can accommodate any kind of player - someone who never touched a plane game, or a real-life veteran pilot.

Unlike most other arcade flight games where planes handle like spaceships in vacuum, in War Thunder you fly through air - an invisible substance that has a real physical effect on your plane. In Arcade mode you only have to deal with a few basic laws of physics like speed, gravity and air resistance against the shape of your plane, while Realistic and Simulator modes take it to whole new levels.

Tank physics are, understandably, simpler and focus on damage model instead. But even there it feels like you're driving a big unwieldy hunk of metal that's affected by different types of terrain.

All vehicles are split into functional parts that have their limits and vulnerabilities. Hitting the right spot at the right angle and using the right ammo has very different outcomes.

This is the main focus in Tank Battles. Since tanks lack the mobility of planes - they win battles by firing a few well-placed shots that penetrate enemy armor and destroy whatever's inside the tank - be it the crew, engine, or ammo racks.

Meaty roaring of the engines, believable radio callouts, flak explosions, and the muffled sound of it all when using the cockpit view - it's all immersive and well-made.

The game's been out for a while and still looks great. Most planes also come with a very detailed cockpit view with functional dashboards.

The Bad:
There's a huge number of little issues that make UI clunky and frustrating to use. Some things don't function like you expect them to, some are found where you wouldn't expect them to be, some look messy and unorganized, for some there's no explanation how they work, while others are straight up buggy.

As you play - you can gradually improve your stats, as well as stats of individual planes. Those are straight-up upgrades that give you a direct advantage over players with less playtime / fewer upgrades researched. Not only that, but research and stat points can also be bought with real money, meaning you can buy power that others have to spend many-many hours working for.

That said, this game is complex enough that you'll still lose if you just throw money at the game without knowing how to play. I haven't spent a cent on the game, have average stats, and still do well.

Unless you plan to play this game religiously or invest into premium account - it'll be a long-long time before you reach the last two of the 5 vehicle tiers. While there's plenty of fun to have in the first three, this also means you won't get to use jet planes or tanks with guided rockets.

For reference: After almost 200 hours into the game and playing 3 of the 5 factions, I've yet to unlock even a single Tier 4 plane.

  • Luck can sometimes significantly affect the outcome of a battle. Instantly losing a plane because one lucky bullet killed your pilot? Yeah, it will happen. There is some unexplained randomness and BS in this game that will sometimes leave you frustrated.

This review is from someone who hasn't spent a cent on the game, has never interacted with game's community, and knows little about game's state of development.

Very fun and addictive if you like immersion and realistic Wold War 2 games.
-Graphics are amazing (considering you have a good pc)
-Very realistic and immersive especially in Simulator mode
-Basically flight simulator with war planes
-Sooooo many planes and corresponding playing styles/preferences
-Different countries to choose from
-Frequent updates always fixing bugs and adding new features....Still waiting for bomber cockpits Gaijiin

-Sometimes too realistic and it makes the game less enjoyable
-For example, if your fighter soaks up even just a few bullets, there is a very hight chance you'll either be leaking fluids or an aileron or flap will be damaged forcing you to land. Sometimes it's cool to be immersed, but other times it can be a real pain in the ♥♥♥. Also you might find yourself contact ly getting one-shotted in tank battles.
-110% pay to win. Honestely, that should speak for itself. If you aren't premium and aren't a piloting prodigy, you'll probably be struggling to get money and advance through the planes. Plus, you get constantly get ♥♥♥♥♥ by premium planes.

In conclusion, War Thunder is a very realistic and immersive game with incredible graphics and gameplay. Sometimes the realism can make it difficult. As this is part of the playing experience, the game remains fantastic.

Are you looking for a game that accurately portrays WWII warfare? Then look somewhere else because that is not this game. The balancing is terrible and not up to historical records. There are multiple instances of russian biases (they get double payload for standard shells, tu-4, etc.). It is a timesink. I cannot reccomend putting the time into getting RP for tiering up when the developers literally just copy paste vehicles across tiers. If you play free expect to grind across an eternity.

War Thunder. War Thunder never changes.

On august 15th, 2013, someones great great grandfather, who served in the army, wondered when he'd get to go home to his wife and brand new PC which he had never seen to play a WW2 sim. He got his wish when Gaijin released War Thunder, by dropping a download into a non translated Russian page.

The gaming community awaited Armageddon, instead, something terrible happened. Gaijin began to make the game not as an accurate sim, but as a source of nearly limitless propaganda. Russians enjoyed luxuries once thought the realm of Soviet WW2 fan fiction. T-34's, LaGG-3s, Mig-17s outclassing whatever they faced. But then, in 2015, people awoke from the euphoria induced dream.

Years of imbalance lead to shortages of nearly every major resource. The entire community unraveled. Fun became a distant memory.

It is now the year 2016. The community stands on the brink of total annihilation, and i am afraid for myself, my bank account, for my time wasted grinding.

Because if my time in the game taught me one thing: it's that War Thunder, War Thunder never changes.

Until something happens that fixes the BR system, I would not reccomend playing this game unless you're russian.
Btw, Yak-3p doesn't exist, Tier 5 Tanks/American planes aren't worth it unless you're rich and you have $500 to burn, and never, EVER -censored-
