[Special] Operation S.U.M.M.E.R.

Pilots and tankers, the last month of summer will be a month to remember. We’re announcing the start of a big new event: Operation S.U.M.M.E.R. Four new premium vehicles straight from the testing grounds, new decals and other prizes for the best warriors in the skies and on the ground!

"Operation S.U.M.M.E.R." will run from July 22nd to August 22nd

Get premium vehicles from Testing Ground "113", decorations, decals and other prizes!

Open the mission calendar for the Task list!

The military arts never stop changing. Somewhere on the front line, shells are firing and turrets are torn off turret rings. Off to the side, engineers strive night and day to perfect their fighting machines: new engines and weapons are developed and armour is strengthened. The results of their efforts are now perfectly tangible.

Soldiers, HQ has received prototypes of military vehicles from Testing Ground 113. This testing ground specializes in a wide array of tasks, from testing the newest prototype ground vehicles and aircraft to benchmarking power trains and complex equipment. Each of these vehicles has its own story: from the famous ‘Uhu’ reconnaissance aircraft that became a test platform for the latest aircraft engines, to a new development: the KV-220 heavy tank, worthy of inheriting the laurel of Kliment Voroshilov, surpassing it in armour, power and armament. The appearance of these vehicles clearly reflects the titanic effort spent on designing and upgrading them. Months in the tender care of mechanics has also left its mark: all testing ground vehicles perform at their peak characteristics as soon as the engine is first started, and their genius engineers have given the vehicles premium status.

There’s a reason these vehicles have been deployed. There is a task at hand: to test these prototype vehicles in real battle conditions with minimal losses. Only the most experienced crews will be able to handle this challenge. Command has decided to distribute the vehicles amongst the best soldiers who have shown their outstanding skills on the battlefield. Now is the time to prove that you are worthy of discovering all the potential of a brand new weapon. You don’t even have to choose – you can get all these vehicles at once by participating in a new operation, codenamed ‘S.U.M.M.E.R.’!

Naturally, there are going to be other useful gifts from the home front too. New decals and other rewards await the event’s participants.

Military camouflages are also available for all the Testing Ground 113 vehicles presented here.

How to participate

“Operation S.U.M.M.E.R.” will take place from July 22nd to August 22nd

Every day, pilots and tankers will receive tasks to get “Marks of Distinction” completing which will guarantee participants new 3d decorations, decals, discounts and other bonuses. The most active participants will become owners of the unique premium vehicles from “Testing Ground 113”!

[Development] M60A1: Facing the Enemy

Download Wallpaper: 1280x1024 | 1920x1080 | 2560x1440

Meet the new leader of the US medium tank branch - the M60A1.
This tank will be added to the game very soon!

In the very first years of the M60’s use, it was determined that the thorough modernization of the base M48A2 model on a tight schedule had led to the creation of a vehicle that was incapable of competently opposing tanks of a potential enemy. The armor protection of the M60’s turret, which had remained practically unchanged relative to the M48, could not withstand a hit from a 100 mm Soviet tank cannon. For this reason, in 1962 the Chrysler company set to work creating a new model of the M60 main battle tank – the M60A1.
The primary distinguishing feature of this new vehicle was its use of an improved turret with steeper sloping angles on its frontal parts. At the same time, the armor protection on the frontal projection was increased to 254 mm without the gun mantlet. The turret was equipped with a command cupola that rotated 360 degrees, with eight glass blocks placed around the perimeter for a all-round view.

With the installation of this turret model, the crew conditions inside the battle compartment were also improved. Alongside this, the designers introduced changes to the fire control system, installing upgraded instruments that would allow the crew to fire at nighttime. After 1965, the M60A1 additionally received the latest M16 ballistic computer. Even the tank’s control systems were modified. Apart from the new equipment and instruments, an improved hydraulic brake actuation was installed for the power train, along with a mechanical stopping brake. The suspension received telescopic shock-absorbers on the lower track rollers. But the improvement of the M60A1 didn’t stop there. The American leadership was forced to introduce new modernization programs at speed due to the appearance of new models of armored vehicles in the USSR.

In War Thunder, the M60A1 will take its place as the top US tank in the medium tank tech tree. If the basic M60 was a well-balanced tank with good weaponry, a fast reload speed and comparatively good armor, then the A1 version allows the player to play more aggressively without fear of direct hits from enemy shells on many sections of the armor (primarily on the turret). Thanks to the increased thickness and angles of the armor, the shells of many tanks (including the T-54) can ricochet right off the frontal projection without injuring the crew or damaging internal modules.
As before, the vehicle can use the classic tactics of a medium tank, taking advantage of its maneuverability and armament for flanking maneuvers or quick position changes. The M60A1 also provides the opportunity to extend your ‘life’ on the battlefield and increase your tank’s effectiveness, as it is far harder to knock the tank out with a frontal strike from medium or long range. Similarly, it is harder to destroy it with a random shot against the turret. The opponent must spend precious seconds aiming, and the player can use this time for a counterattack or retreat.

PSA: War Thunder not uninstalling properly
War Thunder does not properly uninstall when you decide to 'delete local content' and you will have 13.7 (not joking) or more Gigabytes of data on your hard drive that will remain after the presumed uninstall.

To get rid of this chunk of data go to the following directory that is default for steam's game data:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\War Thunder\
And delete the whole folder including the contents of "War Thunder"

NOTE: Attempt this AFTER already uninstalling the game through Steam

Despite being a fair game I dislike the sheer size of the game, but who am I to blame when you have a huge amount of different aircraft's, tanks, and such that I didn't even get to see or use.

I really don't see why so many people hate this game! From my mere 35 hours of playtime (at the writing of this review) I have seen very few bugs, problems or balance issues. I've played other games similar to this aswell, (World of Tanks, Aces High, etc.) and each of those are pay to win/pay to play, plus, they really don't hit the sweet spot with gameplay or realism. War Thunder, however, hits the "sweet spot" in both of those categories (at least in my mind). Unlike Aces high and World Of Tanks, things like the engines, transmissions and wings can be damaged or destroyed, adding a really cool realistic feel to the game. Plus, arcade and realistic battles add the ability for people to play what they prefer. Now for what I think of the business model. From what I've seen, the business model of this game is spot on, you aren't required to pay money just to level up and very few vehicles and features are restricted from your usage if you don't have premium. Plus, the only things that really cost money are premium accounts and the golden eagle things, which you can use to level up faster/buy cosmetic items with. The really nice thing about their business model though comes in the cosmetics department. You can customize your vehicles n stuff using decals and such, but most of the decals are locked, you can of course buy them with the eagle things or you can complete a goal and un-lock them, so its not like its a premium only thing. But what's a game without cons? It runs very badly on old computers and ones that are just bad in general, even on low-resolution and minimum graphics (15-25 fps on ground battle 20-30 fps in air battle). And its a huge game, so you'll be waiting a while for it to download (It took me like 3 hrs to download it the first time). Last problem I found with the game, it has no integration with the Steam wallet, so if you ever want to buy something in-game, you've got to do it via their website.

Warthunder is one of those games where you absolutely will hate it, but love it at the same time. There is nothing else like Warthunder out right now. Its Semi Realistic Flight, Armor, and Gun Models are pretty amazing. And if your a fan of WW2 Planes, Tanks, Or both you will adore the models ingame. Now this game isnt all good, The BR system is broken, There are completely bs moments when a 88mm with 200+mm of penetration bounces off the side of a tank when its a dead on side shot against a t44/54 with around 70mm of side armor and a flat side. You have instances of tanks that were fielded during WW2 Facing Post war Tanks from the 50's, Same as Planes. There are vehicles that are blatantly broken and need to be removed since they seem they cant be balanced(AKA TU4). The Payment model seems fair Until you get to TIER 4 Vehicles, Where unless you buy premium it could take you months to unlock something. And the repair prices on some vehicles in Tier 5 make it almost impossible to play unless your getting Excellent games. Reason being The repair costs on some will be more money than you make without premium meaning if you even do ok you might still be in the negative money wise. But aside from all its flaws WarThunder does one thing Semi Right that no other game does. Its gives you semi realistic battles with semi realistic ballistics and flight models that are very satisfying. And Hey i mean its Free no reason not to try it.

First off, I used to love this game until the reccent patches made it borderline unplayable unless you play japs or russians. The american planes are always killed because .50 cal is like throwing pebbles at steel and they fly like bricks.
The american tanks are armored like they're made of butter.
The german tanks cant pin anything (Especially the Tiger H1).
The russian tanks are ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ and the grind takes years when the RP gain from matches is 1-3K a match with premium. The Brit planes use cannons to rip the wings off of anything they face. And lastly, all the devs want is your money at this point.
The game has become Pay to Win in so many ways, the premium planes out pace all other planes, the premium tanks are bulletproof and the RP gain is impossible to grind without premium accounts T4 and up.
In short, dont play this game for the sake of your sanity and bank account.

Bad game design and developers who do not care what you want.

Arcade Battle Air

Not too much to complain about as this part of the game they designed the least of. Generally you'll have a good time unless you fly Japan. Russo-Japanese War must have hit the devs hard because Japan has the worst BRs and repair prices of any other nation ground or air. You'll rarely get competitive aircraft and if you do get something competitive it's a broken UFO flight model they didn't bother to pass on to anyone with a bit of sense. I'd like to add the final bit of bull the devs like to pass on Japanese is putting horrible fantasy ammo belts filled with practice shells. This ammo problem has not been fixed since the introduction of ammo selection.

Realistic Battle Air

Again not much to complain about. BRs are a problem for many aircraft. You'll have much more fun here but it's not worth it time wise in my opinion. Japanese problems persist here like horrible BR but usually allied pilots are not very smart and they'll turn with an overtiered A6M5. If they ever add Enduring Conflict RB that will be your go to for planes.

Arcade Battle Ground

I could write a novel on the cons to AB tanks but what really makes it unplayable is the constant bombardment of CoD killstreaks that instantly kill any one tank they choose. To continue on that, the Maus is one of the worst tanks at its BR and yet it's still missing historical turret armor and it has an insane repair price. The one tank that can't avoid a suicide run from an attacker and it is one of the most expensive. Getting killed out of the spawn is not fun for anyone and whenever I use the bombing run I want to put "Sorry" in chat because of how unfun and unavoidable the mechanic is. Transmission fires. Remove them. You should not have to unlock FPE or parts and you should not have to unlock flat camos.

Realistic Battle Ground

Battle Ratings are a major problem. We do not have historical match making. We do not have match making by year. What we have is match making "based on player performance". This is a lie. There is little rhyme or reason to some of the BRs, not to mention the spread is too high. It's already pretty hard to get a game so reducing spread really wouldn't increase queue times. You have tanks that are outright better than some with lower BRs and repair costs. Not good. Spawn killing is terrible on many maps. Russians are great are close quarters knife fights which is fine except for that fact that every capture zone required to win is placed in dense cities forcing german teams to venture into their weak zone.

The Problem

The real issue with all of this is simple. It's been this way for years and it's not getting fixed. From disastrous decisions like ATGMs and the Tu-4 they really don't care. The only recent instance I can recall of a good fix would be the restriction of four bombers per team but even that isn't working correctly. Don't take my word for it. Take every top player's word for it. Countless youtube channels stopping with War Thunder content. Japanese belts will not be fixed. High tier tank and aircraft gameplay will not improve. The mods act like children and players are mostly in a bad mood. Japanese players beg tooth and nail for the H8K2 to return to the regular tree and we get a slap in the face with an insane research requirment and a FANTASY UNPAINTED CAMO.

The Good

It looks good.

As it stands, I cannot recommend this game. I've been playing for three years now, and it's only gotten worse. The bias still exists to an insane degree, and forces players who avoid playing with the Russian tech tree to either adapt to facing vastly superior planes or get completely overtaken and destroyed. Honestly, I loved the game. I really did. I gave it so many chances. Almost 1k hours and three years later, and the same issues prevail. But, I'm not going to get angry. I'm going to state the facts.

- Gorgeous graphics. (Honestly, if you can't praise them for anything else, praise them for the graphics. The game looks stunning.)

- And... I can't really think of anything else. That's depressing.

- The developers. Easily the most callous, biased development team I have ever witnessed create a game. The censoring, the Russian bias, the inability to take into account opinions that differ from their own.

- The community. Filled with people who seem to throw out reason in favor of worshipping stupidity. It is a rare day indeed when you meet a well-to-do person who knows tactics and reason. And this is in the Realistic Battles. Arcade is even worse, and Simulator is a deal better.

- The lack of development, and the Pay-To-Win tactics. It's just insane how much better premium planes are than the normal stock. Have you looked at the Russian's lend-lease P-63? Well, go ahead and look at the United States's P-63. Why... Why on earth is the Russian Kingcobra outclassing the American Kingcobra in every way?!

I could go on and on about bias, PTW stories, etc., but I'll leave you with this. Don't download it. Don't waste your time, nor your hope.

Before you read this, let me make it clear that I am only talking about ground battles in this review.

I consider this game one of the best in its field, mechanics-wise. Graphics are well rounded and can play on even a mediocre PC. It looks absolutely stunning at max details, but it will give you a severe handicap when trying to spot enemy tanks.

Now for the bad; The playerbase is absolutely terrible. Roughly half of players in this game do not understand the mechanics and seem too preoccupied with (trying) getting kills and thus tend to ignore the mission at hand, which will ultimately garner you a loss in the end. While the game doesn't reward winners and punish losers like in similar games, it is still quite demoralizing to lose ten or more matches in a row, because your teammates are running around like headless chickens.

Another concern is the abundance of russian players on the european servers. They refuse to use english and tend to teamkill you when you don't understand a word of what they're saying. From what I've heard, it is because the russian server is even more toxic to play on, so they go to the european server instead.

Russian bias; it exists in the form of favorable battle rating for russian tanks. There is no denying this.

Community: The community is congruent to poison and Gaijin is more focused on punishing than listening. It looks like Gaijin is actively trying to sabotage the community and what good is left of it, is slowly fading with each ban.

Bugs: A lot of bugs have been introduced over the course of the last two major updates - don't expect to have a good time, as wonky physics, horrible ballistic collision and missing tank interior will ruin your day.

Half a year ago I would definitely have recommended this game - not so much any more.
Warthunder is slowly turning into a rotting cesspool of biased game design, bugs, horrible player management and blatant disregard of community feedback.

TL;DR: Don't get this game, just don't - you will regret it. It will seem fun at first, but then it will suck out your soul and leave your dried salty husk to write bad reviews.

Are you looking for a game that accurately portrays WWII warfare? Then look somewhere else because that is not this game. The balancing is terrible and not up to historical records. There are multiple instances of russian biases (they get double payload for standard shells, tu-4, etc.). It is a timesink. I cannot reccomend putting the time into getting RP for tiering up when the developers literally just copy paste vehicles across tiers. If you play free expect to grind across an eternity.

War Thunder. War Thunder never changes.

On august 15th, 2013, someones great great grandfather, who served in the army, wondered when he'd get to go home to his wife and brand new PC which he had never seen to play a WW2 sim. He got his wish when Gaijin released War Thunder, by dropping a download into a non translated Russian page.

The gaming community awaited Armageddon, instead, something terrible happened. Gaijin began to make the game not as an accurate sim, but as a source of nearly limitless propaganda. Russians enjoyed luxuries once thought the realm of Soviet WW2 fan fiction. T-34's, LaGG-3s, Mig-17s outclassing whatever they faced. But then, in 2015, people awoke from the euphoria induced dream.

Years of imbalance lead to shortages of nearly every major resource. The entire community unraveled. Fun became a distant memory.

It is now the year 2016. The community stands on the brink of total annihilation, and i am afraid for myself, my bank account, for my time wasted grinding.

Because if my time in the game taught me one thing: it's that War Thunder, War Thunder never changes.
