[Development] Parallax and Updated Sights for Ground Vehicles

Ground battle fans! Not so long ago, the third-person-view sight, the main weapon of every War Thunder tanker, was updated. We’ve added a new marker whose main purpose is to notify the gunner in advance about potential obstacles in the shell’s flight path.

Aiming the cannon is now based on data from three main markers, two old ones and one new one:

  • The large central marker: Not the gun sight, but the player’s view indicator and the center of convergence to which the gun tries to turn.
  • The new half-transparent small marker: This marker notifies the gunner in advance about potential obstacles between the gunner and the target, and displays the point at which the gun will be aimed after aiming is complete. It follows the large central marker almost without delay, but in contrast to the first, takes into account the limits of the gun’s aiming angles and the presence of obstacles in the estimated line of fire.
  • The small opaque marker: This marker’s task is to indicate the weapon’s actual trajectory at the current moment in time. When this marker matches the new semi-transparent marker, and if they are both aimed at the target, you can freely open fire.
The new marker not only provides a timely warning of obstacles in your line of fire, but also provides a means to significantly reduce the influence of the parallax effect, which we will now describe in more detail.

It is rare for skirmishes to take place on a completely clear field with only a few trees between you and your opponent. The battlefield is more often a complex collection of objects, full of bomb craters, strewn with the wreckage of war other obstacles that make aiming difficult. But there is another factor separating the gunner from their prey.

In most game modes, the camera is located above the vehicle model, allowing you to better control the vehicle and view the battlefield, but the price of this convenience is the so-called “parallax effect”. After all, as much as we might want it to be otherwise, the gun is mounted on the tank and the shells fly from its barrel, which, in third-person view, can cause a distorted understanding of the battle conditions, leading the player to hit a defenseless rock or a nearby hill instead of the opponent.

Parallax in action – the target is visible to you, but not to the tank’s gunner.

“How can this be?” you ask. It’s all very simple.

Look: in third-person view, when your line of sight floats above your tank, you can see your opponent, but the crew’s view is another story entirely.

The enemy will be destroyed!

A rock will be destroyed

If you fire in this situation, the shell will hit nothing but stone, and the enemy will be sure not to miss in response.

Of course, the parallax effect also has an influence in the sky, but the issue of aiming there is not so critical, and the victim of parallax is, in the worst case, an ally who gets between you and the target you’re attacking. The effect itself can be smoothed by configuring the vertical and horizontal aiming of aircraft weaponry.

The most reliable solution to the problem is informing the player about the shell’s behavior after it is fired. And this new aiming mechanic is already available to all tankers.

But before that, we have made another very significant change to aiming mechanics – when aiming the weapon, obstacles that aren’t part of the earth’s surface were ignored; this solved a problem that presented itself as a barrel raising up when approaching large objects.

The enemy is in our sights and we’re ready to open fire as soon as we come out of cover – the barrel won’t move.

The convenience of aiming around obstacles increased, but the new mechanic made the parallax effect even more apparent to players, showing it not only at the time of the shot, but also when aiming from obstacles. An unavoidable consequence of all these changes aimed at improving aiming mechanics in battle was updating the main weapon of any tanker – the sight.

From now on, the sight takes into account natural obstacles, but doesn’t concentrate on them, at the same time allowing you to both easily aim at the enemy and take into account potential obstacles in the firing line before the weapon turns in the required direction.

Even the most insignificant obstacles can cause shell detonation!

Enemy detected, sight aimed – all that remains is to wait for the turret to turn.

Parallax has been defeated, now all you have to do is defeat your enemies. Good luck in battle, we wish you many frags!

In the future, the game will also allow players to ‘set sail’ by commanding a variety of warships in the fight over the control of the world’s oceans, giving the game a truly epic scale.

I have had this game for a while now and it seemsd to be very fun. The graphics are great, gameplay is fun, and it doesn't get old too fast. It's fun to play for a little while, take a break, and go right back on. 9/10

After 3 years of playing on the standalone launcher and the steam version there is one thing I can say about this game. It is one of the best games by far to take screenshots in. Even the deveoplers aren't going down the road you want them too, you have to admit they made a very amazing looking game and I can reconmend it based on the views alone if you don't play anything else. 10/10 would take more screenshots again in mid battle.

You'de have more fun slowly trying to kill yourself with a cold butterknife than play this game. Every patch the game gets worse and more broken. Realism was thrown out the window a long time ago. The only thing the devs care about is money and their ♥♥♥♥ blyat.

I can't really recommend this game as long as they keep the shell bounce mechanic in. Basically it doesn't matter if the target is paper, at certain angles you have a flat percentage to bounce a shot regardless of your penetration or the armor of the target. Might as well be playing a dice game instead of what has been marketed as one dedicated to realism.

Honestly, Stalinium paint wont help you that much. If you squad up, and make sure you cover each other, your survival rate will rise dramatically.

I have played this game since I was first introduced to it by jingles. (Jan, 5 2013) When i first started playing i was in love. It was the only thing I ever did all day. The thought of getting to jet drove me to play for 14 hours at a time. The game was great. Then the updates started to come... At first it was just harder to make money and xp. People hated it but I kind of liked it. Then the BR system came and balance left. Matchmaking had trouble getting fair matches but even that wasnt so bad. Then the russian bias got real. Im not one of those people that complain that I died to X russian plane/tank but after seeing russian tanks and planes survive things that would destroy any other tank it got annoying. (planes putting out fires, t-34s bouncing tiger 2 shots in the side, ext) But even this wasnt what made me quit this game. It's the company. They are absolutly terrible. Constantly censoring anyone with an opinion than dosent match theirs. They threaten to ruin RB if we dont let them attack youtubers that help them by finding cheaters? And even steam isn't safe. They constantly have people downvote any review that is negative. I can forgive russian bias. I can forgive the terrible BR system. I cannot forgive this company for the way they treat their community. To Anton Yudintsev, you made a game that was amazing. I loved it so much and always will. But what you have become as a company will destroy you in the end. Listen to the community, let them help you make the game better. If you do that, this game has a chance to rise back up into greatness.

Played the game for months, unlocked tier V planes for every nation and reached the mid-ranks with some tanks.
Then Gaijin sent me a message claiming I had used the Steam refund system to refund money on a 5000 Golden Eagles purchase MONTHS after they claim the refund had happened.
However, I have never used the Steam refund system before. I couldn't find any record of it on my bank account and had to spent €25.- in the Gaijin shop for War Thunder in order to get my account back after it got frozen.

After that I' am no longer interested in playing this game. Not after the Devs showed a poor ability in communcation and made accusations which I couldn't even defend rightfully.

Don't spent any money on this game, Gaijin might ask you for more after you do ;)

RIP Gaijin Entertainment. After the CEO tells the community to censor Youtubers that are EXPOSING hacks that are currently in the game instead of actually trying to build a system that catches cheaters.

NO MORE censorship. No more ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥t...

War Thunder is complicated to review.

The game itself can be good fun at times. I enjoy flying the F84, an American jet fighter, and flanking an enemy tank in the M18 Hellcat, and destroying them with one shot, is a satisfying experience. However, War Thunder can also be extremely frustrating. It's rather annoying to have your tank's track blown off by a teammate as you're leaving the spawn. It's downright infuriating when you flank a T34 and its gun rotates 90 degrees in under a second to blow you up, because the enemy player is using an aimbot. That's a story for further along, however.

Moving on to how the game itself plays. The controls are fully customizable, and you can fly with a joystick or mouse and keyboard. Aircraft controls can be as in-depth or simple as you wish them to be, controlling everything from prop pitch to fuel mixture. If that's not your style, you can just press W to throttle up and have the game take care of everything else for you. Tanks are much more simple to control than planes in game modes such as Simulator Battles, only requiring you to drive and aim. Each avaliable nation in the game has its own unique play style. The American planes tend to rely on speed and firepower, working well with "Boom and Zoom" tactics. The Japanese planes are very maneuverable, usually putting them on the top of the heap in dogfights. Tanks are the same way, the Germans relying on heavy armor and big guns, while the Russians are usually a tad more maneuverable for instance.

The mechanics of the game are good on their own. However, when the company behind this game enters the picture, the waters get murky. Things they control, such as the BR (Battle Rating) system, are not the most well designed or balanced at the time of writing. There is also a presence of bias for some nations at different tiers. This is most noticeable for the Russian vehicles in the game. Russian planes will commonly outperform their opponents despite all circumstances. The topic of "Russian Bias" is a very complicated one, and I don't wish to go too far down the rabbit hole with my review, but I assure you it is there.

Outside of the game itself, the company is very heavy handed with controlling the community. A very recent incident presented a poll, which to my understanding was taken down due to a large backlash from the community. This poll was created because of a video made by YouTuber PhlyDaily, who creates content related to War Thunder and other similar games. PhlyDaily made a video exposing a hacker within the game, and Gaijin claimed that this would cause more harm than good, hence the poll. This poll is a problem because it presented two choices: Ruin a preferred game mode, or abuse YouTube's copyright strike system to silence any YouTuber that covered hacking or any related issues in War Thunder. If that wasn't bad enough, they asked for the community's help in executing option two. What they proposed is technically illegal.

The company behind this game is constantly pulling shady moves and attempting to strongarm the community keeping them afloat. I haven't even mentioned their awful business model yet. It is for these reasons that I sadly can not recommend what could be a fun game. The only reason I continue to play War Thunder is because I've sunk money into it, a product that I wanted to see reach its full potential. However, I do not intend to spend another dime supporting this game, or Gaijin, and I suggest you stay far, far away until things improve, if they ever do.

I used to love this game but I have reached my limit. I have watched the company become gradually more and more opressive but managed to convince myself that it was just a phase. The change came when I discovered that in response to a video showing a major hack the CEO (yes, the person who runs the company) posted a poll asking us to choose between making the hack a permenant feature of the game or issuing copyright strikes agains ALL people who bring up such issues on youtube or other social media.

NO MORE. I will not tolerate such blatantly (and I tried really hard to find an alternative phrasing here) Stalinist methods.
Never again will I play this game. Never again will I knowingly give this company any money.
For the sake of all that is right and good, DO NOT play this game

I loved this game, i played it non-stop before i got it on steam. But only 35.7 hours into getting the steam version i quit.
Why? you may ask. Well for three very good reasons.

1. Russia FTW (or should i say WTF)
Yup it has to be said, the devs have an obvious russian bias.
Russian planes and tanks and 300% better than everything else at their BR.
(which BR itself is designed to give russian tanks an advantage.)
Also the devs are known to ignore their non russian players. And straight up banned me for telling him about the OP russian aircraft in a PRIVATE MESSAGE to a friend. 5 day ban.

2. The price of the steam packages.
50 dollars for two planes. wow....

3,
The devs were talking about abusing the youtube copyright system to get videos trying to show cheaters taken down
and those channels shutdown. (ehm..phlydaily incident)
They are turning into those shady indie devs that try to make a reviewers, that give their game a bad rap, life miserable.

SO screw gajin. screw warthunder.
Im done promoting this game
If you are with me,
help me boycott this crappy company.
