About This Game

War Thunder is a free-to-play, cross-platform MMO combat game for Windows, Linux, Mac and PlayStation®4 dedicated to military vehicles used in and around World War II and the Korean War. In War Thunder, you can take part in major battles on land, in the air, and at sea, fighting with real players from all over the world in a continuously developing environment.

War Thunder already offers a highly detailed experience in military aviation and ground forces combat, giving players access to a Guinness World Record breaking number of aircraft, as well as an abundance of tanks and other combat vehicles - and the number is constantly rising.

You can feel the unmatched intensity of aerial dogfights in a fighter, the decisive power of commanding a heavy strategic bomber or the heat of battle in a ground attacker, delivering precision strikes against your enemies. Alternatively, you can join the spearhead of armoured vehicles, fighting for dominance over the battlefield on the ground: Man a heavy tank with impressive armour and firepower, use the maneuverability of a medium or light tank to your advantage, or support your team by screening the skies with your anti aircraft vehicle - the choice is yours!

In the future, the game will also allow players to ‘set sail’ by commanding a variety of warships in the fight over the control of the world’s oceans, giving the game a truly epic scale.

Master your vehicles through both upgrades and personal experience in an environment that is constantly expanding and rewarding the personal skill of the player. Organise your efforts in one of the countless player squadrons and become an ace pilot or tanker - or both! Our thriving and welcoming community of millions of players is also actively participating in the game’s ongoing development, offering custom content through War Thunder Live, such as skins, missions and even vehicles.

War Thunder has something for everyone. Play cooperative games with your friends on Windows PC, Linux, Mac or PlayStation 4 against AI, or squad up for a PvP battle in a difficulty setting matching your play style, ranging from Arcade to Simulator using Mouse and Keyboard, Gamepad or Joystick.

Features include:

  • Right into the heat of battle - Intense PvP experiences in full-scale combat missions on various difficulty settings for all play styles and degrees of experience.

This game is fun....until you reach a point where the game becomes a kommunist simulator and makes you rage if you are not playing the russains. The developers (Gaijin) only goal is to make money by making the game unfair at tier 3+ so the player will buy golden eagle because he dont want to struggle with this piece of... And the player will buy his way up to higher tier and get the vehicle he want. And you need a lots of golden eagle for that...so the Gaijin made a lot of money with an unfair game.

The community of this game is the definition of "the grass is greener on the other side".

The game is ok, its just a shame that gaijin only caters to the arcade crowd and makes the maps and objectives being fought over in small bunched up areas, where instead of tank battles it feels like knifefights, wich is a shame tbh.

The battle rating compression that's plaguing the higher tier battles is really messing with the thought of having fun during a game. Furthermore, to get to those higher tiers takes too long for people who don't want to pay. Would not recommend to players who don't plan on spending any money on premium or golden eagles.

There is a reason why all the most helpful reviews have large numbers of hours and are all negative. After awhile the fancy shine wears off and you are left with a game of bias, horrible team balance, rng.

A really fun game if you like World War II Planes and tanks, nice graphics and wings getting ripped apart from pulling 18 G's. Be ready to suddenly have your Panzer IV suddenly get shredded by a quad .50 cal. AA gun mounted on a truck. I'm no expert, but i seriously doubt that is possible. Otherwise it is a really fun game, though the russian bias seems very real.

Please read before making consideration:

I am friends with a former Senior Mod from the War Thunder forums. According to (that person), the mods actively check these reviews and downvote any of them that have any kind of criticism. Luckily for us, Steam prevents them from just deleting it like they do on their forums. I believe the top review here is negative, which is good despite my review being positive overall. People need to be aware of all the faults in this game, which are as numerous as all the things this game does right.

If you decide to download this game just be aware of the unilateral censorship and active deletion and muting of anyone who offers up criticism (constructive or otherwise) on the forum. They do not tolerate it at all and you will have your post removed and will be given a warning point. The forums are helpful, but can be avoided entirely - which is what I recommend. It's not worth the trouble to deal with the mods if you do or say something they deem critical in any way.

All that said - the game itself is very fun. It's the best plane game on the market right now. Not that that says much, but it's something. The tank mechanics are very poor though, but if you don't mind some occasional RNG wackiness, they are a fun time-killer.

I figure this review will get two or three downvotes from the mods, but I'm going to be checking often and will try to contact Steam as soon as it happens and hopefully be able to catch them in the act.

Thanks for reading, happy tanking (and piloting).

Update: As predicted, yep.

At the time i'm writing this review, I have about 302 hours into the game.
I mained the German nation (Going on Tier 5 Planes, Going on Tier 3-4 Ground).

As everyone has mentioned a russian bias in one form or another, it is real.
I know 302 hours isn't much compared to other plays, but I think its a valid amount to make a comment with.

Russian Bias in Application (AIR):
- ALL Russian aircraft are almost impossible to shoot down even with direct hits from cannons
(E.x. I was once flying my Tier 4 Me410 U1/A4 and I hit a Tier 2 Yak with a 50mm Air Target round... The Yak survived... This has happened more than once. And for scale, a 50mm Air Target round can one shot a heavy american bomber...)
- Russian aircraft, notably the Yak line, have exaggerated climb rates that arent shown on stat profiles, but are very clear in game
- Russian aircraft maintain speed a lot better than others
- Russian BOMBERS have incredible AI Gunner Accuracy compared to other nations
- The US has a P-51 Mustang, which was also given to Russia as a premium, the exact same plane... but with a lower BR
- Russian machine guns are OP as ****

Russian Bias in Application (GROUND):
- If you fight a russian tank in the same Tier as you, you might as well ditch your tank, theres no point in fighting, as you need at least a tier higher tank to destroy a lower tier russian tank, unless you get a good shot.
- Russians will always pen your armor
- Russians are more likely to set your tank on fire
- Russians deflect shots that shouldn't be possible (If you can pen 200+mm of armor, why can't you pen russian 80mm effective thickness at 90 degress WITH A TIGER!

Honestly and factually speaking, each nation has their own benefits and drawbacks:
- USA: Very balanced play style | Just as weak as they are strong
- Germany: High speed, High Climb, strong ammo, metal armored planes | Crappy turning
- Brits: Good turn fighting, Climbing, Accurate guns | Crappy armor
- Japanese: AMAZING turn fighting | Crappy armor ("paper armor")
- Russia.... Amazing turn fighting, Amazing Climb Rate, Amazing Armor, Accurate Guns, Amazing Ammo... everything of which is boosted and not historically accurate, as oppose to other nations which more or less are.

Every patch in a NutShell:
- If Germany gets new plane -> Nerf German Air
- If Russa gets new plane -> Nerf German Air
- If Any Nation gets buffed -> Buff Russia

I know this review seems very bias against Russia, but honestly, you WILL notice a bias towards the Russian nation if you play this game.

Overall the game is very fun and interesting, but its a BIG BIG turn off when you get killed by a Russian vehicle that was shotting in the opposite direction with a gun that can't pen your armor from any angle or spot.

Ground Forces Reveiw

First of all I want to get this out of the way before I go onto my reveiw...
Ground Forces is messed up big time.
An example showing how Unbalanced this game is. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kdq6O6OJF5Q&nohtml5=False
Poor Design and dumb developers and an uneducated playerbase who don't know a thing about history. Says this youtuber. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sLNV_VNQqyc&nohtml5=False
If any of the current players are reading this please, please, please! let Gaijin know like I have just how upset you are about how broken Ground Forces is. Go to their forums and let them know. Going to steam forums and complaining about it does absolutely nothing. You have to let them know directly on their website. Speak up. Get a petition made up, because this is the worst thing that has ever happened to this game.. it's god awful and only going to get worse and going to make people leave the game like i have for good after playing this game for 4 years. Even World of Tanks is nothing close to how broken this game is.

The Good.
[1.]War Thunder: Air Forces / Thumbs up, Postive 9/10
Somewhat better balanced and fun to play. Simulator and realistic are great but are not really realistic. Game looks great, Gameplay is smooth and solid. No problems here other then the entire game isn't really realistic at all. Eventhough players assume it is.The BR rating system is a bit messed up. Sometimes you have BF 109's and Spitefires going against Bi Planes from WW1. To fix this issue would be easy. Simply just design it so BR 1.0's - 1.3's match up with BR 1.0's - 1.3's very simple fix.

The Bad.
[1.]The Community / Thumbs Down, Negative 1/10
While I've met a few really nice, friendly guys in this game who know a lot about the mechanics of the game and history who were awesome players who had a lot of skill. The community in War Thunder as a whole are generally obnoxious, elitist, imbred idiots who know about as much about World War II history as a third grader knows about P*ssy. This goes for the players in the steam forums and the players in-game as well. It's like none of them have ever read a book or did some research for their own complaints why this game isn't realistic and why the hitboxes are the way that they are. Or even why they are so many problems and unbalanced game mechanics.

Now normally I never could careless what players knew about history or how a game worked but in a game like this that prides itself on strategy, players telling other players it's "Realistic and Historically accurate." When it isn't. I think it is important to at least understand the basics of how the mechanics work and the basics of what any human being should know about history.

One example of this is there are some players who actually believe there were actual real tanks battles in WW2 were American Sherman tanks using machine guns that actually took out German Panzer Tiger II's and Russian AAA guns taking out German Stugg's. Thats how utterly stupid some of these people are. I don't think I've ever encountered such an un-educated and illiterate playerbase in my 25+ years of gaming. The War Thunder community deserves the label it has been given by other gamers across the internet. Because it's well deserved. They are a Grade A pack of strait up boneheads. You won't find a group of gamers who are as dumb as some of these people.

[2.]War Thunder: Ground Forces / Thumbs down, Negative 2/10
I have a feeling the developers are using Ground Forces as an anger managment experiment, and here are my reasons.

Machine guns taking out medium and heavy tanks. AAA's one shotting tanks. TREES TREES TREES TREES TREES TREES! How many bloody tree's do you need to put on one map. I know these developers arn't stupid. They did a great job on the Air Forces part of War Thunder. So they must know how completely messed up Ground Forces is. How badly designed the maps are. So why hasn't anything been fixed yet? It's almost been 2 years? Because the players don't take the time to speak up and tell the developers about it. They would rather complain and whine about it on steam forums then actually be productive, go to their main forums, sign in and make an account like other fans and make a point of getting a petition made up or make a thread post thats actually being constructive to get something done about it.

So what we have here is that the match making is still messed up, the BR ratings for some tanks are messed up, the tiers need to be removed, the hit boxes are still messed up, the years and tanks arn't properly organized in each of the lineups through the tiers and br ratings. Sometimes you're going against tanks that are 3 - 4 years older. The damage rating mechanics are messed up because sometimes it takes like 11 - 16 hits to take one guy down eventhough you have targeted the weak points on the tank, taken out his ammo racks, fuel tanks, tracks, engine, and turret. Other times I've had 3 enemy German Panzer tanks firing on me and I'm just using a crappy American Starter tank but yet my tank is still standing there after mowing them down. While it was pretty fun, I do feel thats really not balanced at all because the German Panzers were some of the best and most powerful tanks ever designed in WW2. So this game obviously was never intended to be realistic at all, eventhough players think it is.

The kill counters are messed up and not tallied properly. There is still team damage allowing people to strickly use it too grief players because not enough players have made a point of letting the developers know to get this changed. They would rather complain about it.

[3.]Terrible and lazy Designed maps. Glitchs and Exploits
Now this part is 100% the fault of the developers, not the players. This is were I feel the developers have been extreamly lazy and there is no excuse for this at all. There are a few maps I've found serious game breaking glitchs that can be exploited. I used to make levels for Half Life, Quake 3 Arena, Operation Flashpoint, Call of Duty 1, Delta Force 1,2 and 3 back in my early 20's and this kind of thing is the result of in-experianced level designers who didn't take their time to test out their levels/map properly. Were I found these glitchs, I won't mention them because I don't want players using them to cheat. When I experimented I found many many glitchs on some of the bigger/open maps. This is unacceptable for a multiplayer PVP focused game and needs to be fixed ASAP. It could be easly fixed in about 20 mins. I usually don't get mad over things like this. Bugs, glitchs and problems are always in pc games. They will always be around. But this kind of half ♥♥♥♥♥ work is disgusting to me and it kinda pisses me off these developers have been so lazy in this area with Ground Forces.

There is one map were you can hide under the terrain. You can shoot the enemys but they can't hit you because you can see right through the terrain. Another map there is a rock were you can move into and only your tanks cannon is pointing out. They can only hit your turret nozel and never destroy you. While you can just keep firing on the enemy. There is many overly done and Improperly placed tree's rocks and shrubs. Sometimes there is just wayy to many tree's. It's like trying to do a Tank Battle right in the middle of Fangorn forest out of Lord of The Rings.

Thank you for taking the time to read all this. If you read this far. Thank you very much. It means a lot.

You're Truely,
-A long time War Thunder fan.

'Twas the night before Christmas, and all through War Thunder
The players were upset, at Gaijin's latest blunder
The tankers were all camped, behind the enemy spawn
While pilots flew low, mowing the lawn
The enemy planes, they circled our field
While we all climbed up, refusing to yield
And I in my Corsair, and my friend in his Yak
Getting swarmed left and right, constantly under attack
When suddenly from behind, guns making a clatter,
I quickly checked six, to see what was the matter
Down to the ground, I dove like a Stuka
The player who missed me chatted out "♥♥♥♥!"

Well, after sinking quite a few hours into this... I finally came into conclusion:
WarThunder is free to play. As in, it is free to roam around the map, and be cannon fodder for overpowered russian biased players (even more if they're paying for premium or premium vehicles). You can drive around in a nice model of Tiger 1 which was no match for any other tank for a good few years, and used to anninhilate every russian t32, in this game this won't be it. You will get upranked and will have to fight ridiculously overpowered (cannon wise, shell wise, movement wise) soviet vehicles. Tbh, even high explosive charges feel to do a lot more damage once you fight for the russians... I'm no expert, but afaik Gaijin is a russian company, hence the bias...
Don't get me wrong, I'm far from being bad at this game, I camp around, play the Tiger tactically, get my several kills most of the time, but it is a struggle. Gaining wins in Ralistic Battle? Yeah, right. 1/20 is a win.
In Sim battles, it's better, but there aren't that many battles for Tiger1 in sim.
And don't even get me started on planes...
Did I mention scores of russian speaking players? Not having anything against, but most of the communication is done in russian without asking...
What elsee... ooh, lots of spawn camping. You spawn in, bam, right into the back. It seems fair to Gaijin. Cause, you know, russian tanks are fast and nimble, by the time Tigers get to objective, theyre already at our spawn, ♥♥♥♥♥♥ everyone as soon as you spawn in.
So if you think you enjoy being shot in ridiculous OP affected ways most of the time - this game is for you. Then again this isn't far away from sadomasohism.

The average thought processes behind someone who actually loves tanks and did their homework:

War Thunder 'Realistic Mode'. Where we took out the Russian ammo's inaccuracy, nerfed American mobility and gun depression, didn't bother fixing their ammo to behave like it's real world counterpart, still haven't nerfed Russian HE ammo hitting up to 2 tiers higher than it's supposed to. Still haven't modeled German armor correctly to represent how weird the Tiger's front armor was, cool. Still haven't fixed American APHE actually not having HE filler, awesome. Oh and the German round velocity still blows, check check. Oh they hit the American mobility yet again, still haven't fixed their armor. And now their biggest strength, air power has to deal with Assault Fuses. On a plane you wouldn't bother dive bombing in. Secret documents showing this is how the real war went? Huh, that's interesting. Why doesn't the T34's engine explode as often and why does it take multiple HE direct hits to track tanks? Well.. alright we'll roll with that. Huh, that crew hatch deflected an AP shell at 70 meters, that's new...

tl;dr - World of Tanks more accurately modeled the guns in their arcade game than Gaijin did in Realistic. Go play Aces High II if you want a realistic game and go play World of Tanks if you want a better tank arcade game.

Around the time of initial, this game was great. As of this date, it's a broken mess of severely broken battle ratings. Unless you enjoy simulator game modes, I recommend staying away from this game if you consider any game mode but simulator mode.

Prepare for a game where the community has teamates that will kill you and then tell you that it is your fault. Prepare for vehicles that all handle pretty much the same and are biased towards Soviet vehicles. Prepare for devs that would rather pump out new content than fix the content that is already in the game. Prepare for a game that you spend real money or spend a rediculous amount of time grinding for the vehicle/mods you want. This game has a lot of flaws, and spends most of of its time ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ the player off. Looks cool, is sometimes fun for about 5 minutes. Don't waste your time or hard earned money on this junk.

There is a reason why all the most helpful reviews have large numbers of hours and are all negative. After awhile the fancy shine wears off and you are left with a game of bias, horrible team balance, rng.

Do not get this game.
I´ve played this game for more than 600 hours in ground forces now and I really can´t recommend it at it´s current state.
The game itself would be good if there would be more players and a better matchmaking system, the graphics and models are good, also there are no flamers in the community, but letting Tiger 2´s fight against T 54´s and IS3´s + IS4´s when you can´t even TOUCH them in the Tiger frontally is just a joke. Also there is no "Russian bias" itself, its just the thing that the Russian tanks are way to undertiered to fight the Germans Brits or Americans. You have to spend alot of time and money into this game to get some tanks which are actually fun to drive like Tiger I´s or T34´s. To be honest i hate World of Tanks but since Warthunder doesn´t give a single crap about its community and players you should rather play that instead of Wartunder.

Good game if you constantly like getting one shotted by russian tanks. Plus the match making really sucks.

Russian biased piece of ♥♥♥♥ with Russian developers. These guys will call any document you give them "blatant propaganda". Meanwhile they will totally trust their own "sekrit dokumints" and buff the Russian tanks like there is no tomorrow. One of the developers didn't even know how a German gun worked and didn't admit it! He simply closed the forum topic! What a sad little f**ck

The only reason I'm even playing this "realistic" crap is for the sake of my Youtube channel. If you want realistic tank combat, please do yourself a favor and play Steel Fury: Kharkov 1942. It's not on steam but you can buy it from their official site.

Great Graphics, Tanks look Badass
Nice Manuvering system for everything

Russian bias and fake stats
Banning suggestions for improvement and constructive criticism on forums

Gaijin is sh*t,
Russians, you cant hit,
Bullsh*t is WT,
It makes me wonder,
What they were thinking,
When they started sinking,
Lets go play HAWKEN,
'Cause there's no point in talk'n
To these devs,
They're all thickheads,
That didn't rhyme,
But these guys are out of time.

Gaijin your game is sh*t

Good job on CrossOut tho

Well I'll try to not explode but
- Russian Tanks shoot ballistic urinuim tipped death rays
- Russian planes handle like UFO's
- American/German vechiles always catch fire when hit
- T 34 fuel tanks dont catch fire dont beleive me they actually added this for "balence"
- High tiers is for russians only
- Devs dont listen to you when you try to point out historical innacurancys
- Gaijan only care about money and making russia glorious
Are there actually any pro's though?
yeah game looks amazing, its fun (when russians are not involved) Gameplay is wonderful and most importantly its not world or tanks or world of war planes health ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥t.
So yes i listed many cons but hey its a great game just need to get some new devolpers who are not all relations of stalin
Before i go did a mentions there is a Russian bias
I just rembered all of this will never be seen as gaijan cant take critasim

0 Balance, russians have post war ammo and tanks fighting against tiger 1s and 2s
Same with planes, probably going to be the same with boats, germans are going to be shooting with an mg42 from a floating bath tube while a russian battleship runs them over
