War Thunder is a popular MMO combat game focusing on the world war 2. Fleets on the sea, air to air combat with fighter planes and fierce fighting on the ground involving armored vehicles.
Whether in the sky or on the ground, the 16v16 matches are filled with beautiful vehicle models.

With War Thunders a lot of people will compare this to World of Tanks. Both share the same weapons/vehicles and on some maps have similar objectives, but they are different enough that playing will give two different experiences. World of Tanks is more like a team death match, while War Thunder plays like game of King of the Hill. The most obvious difference is that in World of Tanks you only get one tank per match, while in War Thunder as long as you have spare tanks and crews you can keep respawning. As soon as a player respawns in War Thunder their previous tank disappears. This is really disappointing and breaks the realism of the game having a tank suddenly disappear in front of you. It also means that you can’t use the destroyed tanks as cover.

You start off with a some (reserve) planes from the games five playable nations (US, USSR, Germany, Britain and Japan). Only two nations currently have tanks: Germany and the Soviet Union
There are 3 Modes. Arcade mode, where vehicle damage isn’t as severe and you have unlimited ammo and multiple respawns. The two other modes for the more hardcore gamers. Realism mode increases the difficulty by adding limited ammo and harder damage penalties. Simulation is very hard, where a single mistake can spell doom, and you’re given no extra planes to respawn with. i tried the simulation... i never finished the tutorial...
The control designed around using a mouse. Point an on-screen cursor where you want to go and the plane follows, rather you controlling it directly. That might work okay for a mouse but it’s horribly imprecise for a controller. I just used the mouse to handle tanks and airplanes. Still using this basic keys, its very easy, in the arcade mode...

One of the best features about War Thunder is the upgrade system. Over a hundred planes and tanks are included in the game, but they have to be unlocked by research
Each battle give you XP and Silver Lions, which, alongside research, will allow you to buy new planes/tanks, new modifications and train your crew. Improve your cannons, engines, bullets, crew member skills etc.
Golden Eagles, the in-game currency you purchase with real money allows you to buy months of Premium status which, like many F2P titles, gives you certain bonuses. It also allows you to buy premium vehicles which come pre-packaged with a locked set of modifications. Which is nice if you just want to have something with all the fixings to go into battle with but does not give you any tangible advantage given how many other factors are always at play. The best planes in the game are NOT premium vehicles.
There are lots of “starter packs” which will be very familiar if you’ve played a F2P game in the last years. For a F2P game War Thunder is not in constantly asking for your money. The biggest incentive I found for spending real money revolves around how long you have to !!wait to research!! things.

Crew upgrades are dictated by their role. Operator gunner, tank commander, loader, gunner, and driver. Expanding into these are keen vision, field repair, leadership targeting, machine gun reloading, gun fire, communication, and a short selection more.

You can create your own squadrons and clans with other players, although it be at the cost of Golden Eagles. While Golden Eagles can used for purposes involving the earnings of Silver Lions, it’s best to think of Golden Eagles as the premium account.
The audio is great. Engines rumble, the sound of gunfire is hard and satisfying. Bombs crash into fortified emplacements.
Inspiring music gets you into the game from the first moment. Choral and martial tunes trumpet away as if War Thunder were a epic movie.
The game supports !!purchasable!! single player campaigns complete with WWII-era footage of real battles in the mission briefings. They are a nice change of pace from the multiplayer experience. They serve as a good place to master the basics and enjoy a bit of history. There’s a number of scenarios and dynamic campaigns you can play with your friends.

War Thunder is a WWII simulation that you can lose yourself in intense combat, hundreds of vehicles, casual and challenging difficulty settings and huge upgrade paths. The game is permanent growing. New Airplanes, tanks, maps, modes and the promise of naval forces.

I hate to play the same tune as so many others, but unlike them I am taking my review and going a step further.

I'm a lover of history, from as ancient as Mayan and Aztec cultures to as modern as it can get when talking current news. I love to know why things happened, the reasons, the causes, the impacts upon how we see things today, and what it can mean for those who care to enjoy their history.

So, as I write this review, keep the words "Historical", "Accurate", and "Fair" in mind. Cause they'll be mentioned a lot.

Historical planes, tanks and ships, all clashing upon one battlefield that allows players to simultaneous and fairly enjoy how these various war machines of history would have performed under the accurate scrutiny of Gaijin's developers who no doubt have the best interest of this game at heart, right? But what game are we playing, if not War Thunder? A game advertised as historically accurate and fair to all countries in how they are represented historically to players? Knowing they're targetting both a large audience who -wants- a fun combat flight simulator game which boasts accuracy; and simultaneously knowing they're targetting the history buffs and adamant learners who want to gleefully roar through the skies as a P-47 Thunderbolt over 1940's Germany. Surely! They would want to represent the lives lost, the battles won, and the ingenuity of men and women of this war accurately, right?

Now, take every mention of those words I told you to notice before, and answer them with "No". This game was praised as the champion against other games like World of Tanks, where World of Tanks and it's corporate model is to force all players into mediocrity and a 50% win/loss range than to be fair (look up Greedy Goblin's World of Tanks article, then you will agree). Even I came in when War Thunder had almost one-quarter the number of planes is has now, and was boasted as being historically accurate.

Those days are long gone, I've put in well over 300 hours of my life trying to enjoy this game. The only times I authentically enjoyed this game is when I broke down and submitted to the mentality of my close friends who call this game by it's true name: "GLORIOUS SOVIET UNION COMRADE VICTORY SIMULATOR"*. By this, I mean, I started playing nothing but Soviet Russian planes, I watched in initial glee as my scores skyrocketted. I went from being the bottom 5 players to the top 5. Then the horror hit me. I was indoctrinated. I had spent cash to turn around from the planes I -wanted- to -desperately- enjoy, yet I can't due to the GSUCVS* and it's portrayal of Russian warplanes as nigh-unstoppable machines of complete devestation.

I spent cash to enjoy the best of the United States circa 1940's era planes I always wanted to fly; I spent cash and time to work up the German Luftwaffe planes, where I finally hit my peak into indoctrination. That is when I spent cash to play Soviet Russian planes like everyone else, just so my above-average flight skills aren't being held back because a single Russian plane can endure over 1000 rounds of .50 caliber anti-air machinegun fire. So my enjoyment and money spent on my "dud planes" with other factions was turned around and then I learned the "glory" of the GSUCVS*. It's taken me some time, it really has. But I can finally say, without the shadow of any doubt...

This game as made for Russians, by Russians, and most likely at gunpoint by Joseph Stalin himself, or at least by the specter of Stalin. The only hope to redeem this game would be to overhaul it, cut out the busywork of all the "prototype" and "testbed" planes that keep you from enjoying the plane you really want. Cut out the horribly overpowered and unbalaned and unfair Russian cheat engine for Russian planes. And lasty, to apologize to every player for their grievous wounds inflicted upon trying to represent "accurate" history.

Until then, I will not recommend this game unless you understand that it is NOT an accurate game, that it is a game made to pander towards old Soviet diehards who can't see Mother Russia as anything but completely indomitable and constantly producing instant-win scenarios. Play it, but do NOT spend your cash. Play it, but do NOT bother commenting on their EU/USA forums. They will simply mock you with sock puppets while they ban your forum account.

To sum up what is being said within the 20,000 reviews is pretty long but in short it goes like this,

For people new to this game it is a brillaint second world war arcady flight sim with different styles of play and many different aircraft, later on the game requires a lot of money to actually progress anywhere if you even manage to reach tier 4 out of 5 you will understand what I mean by this, If your not prepered to put money on this game i wouldn't suggest getting your hopes up for it.

For people with 400+ hours or those who have played it prior to patch 1.37 We all feel your frustration, the company switched from the all knowing all loved to the more "give us all your money" what 1.37 added was different was of proggression from the much more simply 1-20 tier system with 20 being top and 1 being the start it was compressed into only 5 tiers, what was expected was rough boundries eg Tier 4 vs Tier 4 Well nope... if you play tier four your more than likely to experiance the wrath of a MiG-15 pilot booming and zooming your spawn throughout the whole game, still not the worst part Both Arcade and realistic are now flooded with bomber pilots flying to the enemy base blowing it up and letting the AI gunners act as laser guided heat seeking laser beams that track and destroy all life, this is still not to mention the horrible progression system that in a whole translates to "Give me all your money" the game requires countless grinds throug horrible aircraft and then make you pay for it before trying to unlock the slightly less broken one just infront of it, The game went downhill from 1.37 flight models are now copies and objects not fully registered meaning you can fly through houses or you'll slam into an invisible 50ft tree. The games Devs arn't bad people they used to listen and fix almost all bugs and issues now i believe money has taken over a once great game what used to be a brilliant game is now the biggest example of pay2win on steam

This game once was a very nice and good developed game, But slowly patch after patch it gets worse and worse, almost reaching WoWP level.
Worse is even that you get banned for speaking out on the forum, guess russians didnt forget the CCCP that quickly, free opinion not allowed.

Its a nice enough game if you start and know a bit about flying. if you dont, leave it be. Low tiers (which dont count as battle rating dictates match making) are hopelessly outclassed by professianal sealclubbers. up to high tiers which are a grindfest which make World of Tanks look like a breeze in the park...
see for yourself and you probably quit after a couple of weeks...

This game was really nice before patch 1.37, but it still had some bad aspects before that patch, first of all, the devs are russians...nothing wrong with their nationality but i mean you really notice they are russians, they are totally pro-russian, everything russian is just OP in this game while in real life russian airforce was trash having tons of casualties hell there were even battles where 30 german planes destroyed 400 russian planes (air skirmish before battle of kursk), but lets forget about the Russian OP part, it was never p2w until patch 1.37, now it takes ages just to unlock ONE single plane, before that you could unlock an entire line of planes and buy them if you had the money, well doesnt sound that p2w yet, but here it comes: every game you get some exp and additional exp that can be bought with goldeneagles, so if you pay you can just unlock most planes very early while others will probably never be able to unlock most planes except if they play 8hours a daily per week for 2 years ... another thing that makes me mad are the german planes, most of them are just garbage, i wonder how the real german planes could destroy 10x more planes than the russians if they had such bad planes... the worst thing is ww2 german jets vs korea war jets, i thought this was a ww2 game ! so you reach the legendary german jets just to fight the 10-20 years newer korea war jets ?? the devs tried to fix that problem giving the germans the EXACTLY same planes as russians and americans of the korea war... so i think everyone will be excited to reach the end game just to see that every nation will have the exact same plane without any differences and the so called ww2 game will be a mix of korea war and ww2 or a pure clone wars.

War Thunder a grate game over all very well done, but if your new or have put the game down for a while and are retuning to it. IT sucks because I swear the the game is out to get you. Then there is you friends wo have like 500hours loged in the game and getting twice the RP your getting and makeing you feel useless and there is the unbalincement where there is pritty much flying tank that will rip a wing off in one shot!"Stpid 47m cannons" Seriusy why dont you put them in a diffrent catagory with more powerfull planes. I have to admit the graphics are grate and the game runs quite smouth but that dosent make up for the imbalance in planes. OH and don't forget the AAA are slitly over powerd tearinga wing off instantly.
Thats all for this revew hope i shead some light in this game.

Up until recently, War Thunder has been my favorite game by far. But one bad change after another has taken all fun out for me. The bigget of these changes is the progression system. Mid to high tier vehicles will take a rediculously long time to unlock unless you pay for a premium account. Even with a premium account, it can still take 100 hours for a single plane. I know they have to make money somehow, I get that, and that's fine, but this game is plagued with overpriced microtransactions. $30+ for a single plane is pretty excessive. The main focus of this game has turned into one thing: money. While it is not pay to win at all, it is pay to progress.

Another issue is the damage system. Weapon damage has been lowered to a laughable level. This game use to have a bit of realism to it. Now you can put hundreds of rounds into a plane, and have it fly away with nothing more than a few scratches. Things that should kill people don't. For example, the other day while flying a B-17, a Zero crashed into the middle of my plane. My heavy bomber completely lost its tail, both wings, AND the remainder was set on fire. What damage did this tiny japanese fighter sustain? A smoking engine, and some slight damage to its left wing.

The most problematic thing about this game however, is the overly strict and sensitive moderators and developers. ANY form of negative feedback, whether its polite or not, will earn you a ban from either chat, the forums, or the game itself. I've seen numerous people banned from expressing compaints with changes and patches. They weren't raging, they weren't being rude, they were politely giving suggestions. This complete disregard for the playerbase has driven players off by the tens of thousands. About 6 months ago, there were about 60,000-100,000 players on at any time. Now that number sits around 15,000-30,000.
Last year, I would have happily given this game a very positive review. At this point however, I sadly can't. The game is not completely ruined yet. There's still hope for it if it doesn't continue down the path its on.

This game could be quite a good oversimplified arcadish game to some players,

but if you are looking for any kind of accuracy (historical battles that actually occured, or regarding flight dynamics), just don't waste your time with this game.

Historical Battles and simulator battles (as they're now called) were simplified multiple times since the game was made available, and will probably just disappear form the game soon.

Because of multiple basic, gigantic flaws in the implementation, choices taken and oversimplified flight dynamics and aircraft components/interactions, the amount of players entering simulator games is now close to ZERO.
This means you'll have to wait 15+ minutes (if you're lucky) to actually enter a sim battle (flooded with bombers playing as fighters, or using 3rd person gunner view & mouse to kill the entire enemy team).
Beside the waiting time, if you really are into simulation, you won't enjoy this at all.

In a few words :

- if you're looking for an oversimplified arcadish game you can play in seconds, this may be for you, at least for a few minutes a day.

- if you're looking for something more serious, just ignore WarThunder.

The 'simulator' tag SHOULD NOT BE ATTACHED TO WARTHUNDER anymore, in my opinion.

This game is made by Forever in Power Comrade Stalin , i mean Vladimir Putin , if you want to win you play russian and to get kills you just need to land exhaust fumes from your airplane or tank on enemy inferior technology because everyone knows 1940's russian technology is best technology.

The tanks mode is like playing mario kart on hard mode , invisible bananas everywhere that will turn your 200 km/h tank upside down.

Wouldnt surprise me if the russian nation get a nuclear warhead on the bombers because Gaijin knows russian invented the nuclear bomb.

Close attention to detail was paid in this game. There are those who would say that you must pay for premium content to be competetive, but I find no such problems and great strides have been made to improve the balancing for matchmaking. When I started playing, it was aircraft only and thus most of my game time has been devoted as such. I have no experience in the tanks' playability that was recently released. But for each aircraft, nothing is copied and pasted with different visual models; each aircraft has its own quirks, and while I've never flown a real Spitfire you can just feel it through the joysticks that this is an old aircraft that was an ace back in its day because of the pilots who flew her, not her onboard systems like todays aircraft. The feel of flight in each aircraft is very believable and the sheer amount of planes available is staggering. Not one aircraft was a toss-in, they all are awesome.

Breakdown time!

Graphics: A+, looks great on Radeon technology.

Planes: lots of them, and each one has individual flight dynamics

Gameplay: Single player exists as individual missions but has no story or effect on multiplayer. Multiplayer gaming is what this game was built for and it does that extremely well.

Glitchy tendencies: Haven't personally found any. They exist, I'm sure.

Realism: You end up ripping the wings off if you pull out of a dive too fast. Individual parts can be shot off of the plane and affect its flight dynamics appropriately. Careful attention to real life data translates directly to the power of each plane's armament type. 10/10 for realism on the simulation/full control modes. There is an arcade mode in game that allows for unrealistic flight, but that's fun too.

Do I recommend this game? Heck yeah. Lots of fun and aside from a few idiot griefers you get once in a while in multiplayer, the community is awesome. Go get this game, it's free and you don't need to have premium content to get what you want as long as you're willing to grind a bit for the planes you want in your lineup.

before 1.39, 10/10, after 7/10, still pretty good, after 1.43 3/10, shure theres plenty of planes and tanks to unlock but after 1.43 was realised i found it hard to find a way to have fun, and its a bit odd that besides japan (who realy did need some new jets) only russia (who had a huge amount of jets, inclusing the one with the lowest Batlle Rating) had a jet bomber with guns on it. it also quite anoys me that almost every good US plane it a russian premium, some are even a better version of the US one, also the lancaster had a huge payload, yet the russian Yer-2 has 1 tonnes more bombs, because of "ballance issues", if so why not give the lancaster and the Yer-2 5 tonnes of bombs. germany and japan both have rocket planes that start mid air, so when i try to take of in the new ginea mission in my P-80 a Ki-200 often swoops in extremly fast and kills me, i have also seen a Me 163 almost do this on korea, and because of the late start stuff steveral MiG-15's have done this to me in my f9f. for these reasons i do not recomend this game to players.

You might meet a few rammers in this game.
You might rage because your allies kill steal you.
You might be mad because the enemies decide to suicide or bail out when they about to die and you did not get the credits.
You might ram your own team or your team ram you while chasing 1 enemy.
But hey ...This is
WAR THUNDER !
Just a Game :D
