About This Game

Castle Story is a creative voxel-based strategy game in which you can build castles one brick at a time using an army of little characters called Bricktrons.

Your goal will be to explore a vast landscape full of mysteries and dangers, and defend your castle against onslaughts of hostile creatures and possibly other players.

The world of Castle Story takes place on flying islands, high above an infinite ocean. The islands are made of voxels, cubes made of various elements, which means you can dig, carve and build anything you can imagine in the landscape. Digging underground to gather resources, stacking bricks on top of each other to build a wall or even tunnelling through a mountain is all possible and even necessary to keep your Bricktrons safe.

Carefully designing your castle not only requires creativity and imagination, but thanks to pathfinding AI and physics simulations, Castle Story has layers of strategy and depth on top of an otherwise free-form sandbox experience.

Castle Story will be released for Windows & Mac (with possible Linux support once Unity4 is released).

Key Features

  • Build any structure you can imagine! Using 2x1 blocks, create structures that are not only good-looking, but also functional. Your Bricktrons need to be able to navigate your castle to build it and to keep the monsters out!
  • Physics! Watch a tower crumble to the ground realistically when its foundations can no longer support it. The entire world obeys to the laws of physics which means that you need to build cleverly so your castle can withstand attacks from projectiles and explosives.
  • Sandbox! Build a huge sprawling fortress, a single impenetrable bunker or a network of underground tunnels. The choice is yours. Castle Story rewards imagination and ingenuity.
  • Strategy! Command your Bricktrons as they build your castle brick by brick. Manage the way they work, what resources they gather, and the places they explore. Use your resources to build weapons and armor for your Bricktrons and all kinds of upgrades for your castle.
  • Combat! Using shields, swords, bows and lots more, your Bricktrons can defend themselves against the hostile creatures inhabiting the world of Castle Story. Lead your Bricktrons through tough fights, and use your wits to gain an advantage. You can even build catapults to rain destruction on your foes!
  • Magic! The world of Castle Story is permeated with all kinds of magic. Discover resources with magical auras and learn to mix them to create effects. Explore strange places and find mysterious artifacts left behind by unknown civilizations.

This game is nearly unplayable due to bugs that should have been dealt with three years ago. At it's core, Castle Story is an experimental survival/sandbox RTS in which you tell little yellow guys called Bricktrons what to do. They can work or fight, but typically get confused while carrying out their assigned tasks and just stop doing anything. The bugs in this WiP game are just too much, considering the fact that it's been 'in beta' for four years now. The project is obviously too much for the 10-man, part-time, on-again-off-again development team, and it's gotten to the point that they've hired on a PR guy to try in vain to dispel the rumors that this game has crumbled to nothing. Updates are infrequent, and the ones that come every four to six months add no new content, and fix none of the bugs which make the game almost unplayable. Box, if you're reading this, I'm sorry for you, and what the company you're representing is doing to you, and to the Kickstarter backers of this game. 1/5

The most recent "substancial" content added was a christmas tree in 2013. But it is a game with potential.

This game has the slowest development team I have ever seen. Don't buy until the game is done please, they need some motive to finish it.

DO NOT BUY! Sauropod studios are run by a very small group of inexperienced, unapologetic jerks. If you bought in to this game through kickstarter or early access, they will treat you like crap on the forums.

The only thing Castle Story had going for it was the amazing work the Community Manager: Box, was doing. Box would try to give information to you straight, without breaking any of the company rules, which was very difficult to do. Box would always try to break information down to the community and calm people down who were angry about any of the situations. In the end, the company would give Box misleading information and then blame him for giving out any information to the community.

One of the primary developers for Castle Story is a dev named Thierry. Thierry has a tendency to berate the community for asking questions. On multiple occasions I've read post by him calling out individuals and virtually yelling at them, or the community in general and blaming them for being impatient. The game has been in development for years now, and there has literally been no visual improvement in over a year.

Originally there were weekly updates on what was going on, with an occasional skipping of a week or two. Now there are monthly updates on what is going on. I take that back. There are monthly video blogs about things nobody cares about. These "monthly" video blogs have only made it up to the 3rd blog before they seem to have stopped posting them. It has been six weeks since the last video blog, which is probably a good thing, because they're useless information anyway.

TL;DR, STAY AWAY FROM THIS GAME. The devs will treat you like crap, and blame the community for asking too many questions, the game has been stagnant for over a year. The forums have started seeing posts deleted, and users are getting banned for giving out useful information, and asking real questions respectfully.

I am one of those who bought the game when it first launched on Steam.

Still here waiting for a substantial update. Or anything other than a dumb blog release about the guy is the head cheese in charge of sound. Ive waited an entire yea and it is exactly the same game, nothing notably new.

Games take time, every game is different. Refactoring. Blah Blah.

The problem isnt that the game is broken. Yeah its got bugs, I expect that. Not one significant update in a year.

How is that Space Engineers can produce new mechanics to their game almost weelky on the spot, then release a bug fix of those issues within the next few days? Sauropod has let me down for a game I was really excited about. I even had bought a copy at release for my brother in-law.

Dont be a sucker, you $20 would be better spent on a game with active devs.

This game look promising and for an Early Access Game it looked fun in videos and screenshots. But the game has been abandoned, there hasn't been an update in a year or so and no sign of the devs.

The game is very un-friendly to new players. It took me a half-hour to figure out how to move my guys. Most of the time when you build they don't even finish what you told them to do. The pathfinding is terrible aswell. The animation are not terrible I have to admit.

The game also runs like utter ♥♥♥♥ on my $1200.00 gaming pc, constant lag and crashes happen almost everytime you start playing.

There is really no point in building becuase you're guys can't compete a simple ♥♥♥♥ing task without any problems like pathfinding problems and sometimes they just stand still. Combat is pointless with the pathfinding so whats left? Nothing do not waste $19.99 on this game.

If they kept patching and updating the game I would not be writing this. A huge waste of money, don't let you're wallet near this peice of ♥♥♥♥.

1st Session: Played through the one available map. Tried to build a house with blocks that would disappear, and minions that cant path up a staircase.

10/10

2nd Session: Played through the one avalable map. Was unable to get any minions out of harms way. Coruptrons destroyed everything. Textures disappeared mid slaughter so I didn't even know where to mourn my fallen twinkie men.

10/10

3rd session: Fell asleep playing the one available map. Went to the Sauropod thread and realized they are programming this game to instantly cause rectal prolapse; The only thing they have successfuly made is Butt Hurt.

11/10

In all seriousness, just sell the idea to a real developer and buy some weed, Sauropod.
Castle story was a great idea you had once. Let a qualified team finish what you barely started.

No updates in over a year, no community contact with devs, don't expect this game to ever be finished. So, don't buy.
At this point, free is the appropriate price.

They've even disabled comments on their site, and apparently shut down their sub reddit to avoid answering questions.

Wayting for updates and content in Month, just nothing happened. in gerneral its a good game idea, but for the budged and the time they got its just miserably.

there are other games with smaler funding that get content every week, and games weith NO funding programmed by a single person which have far more content!

Just dont buy this. in my opinion its a ripof!

I bought this game about a year ago, played it and thought it was cool for an early access. I look at the game now, and it seems like nothing has changed at all. It's a cool idea, what it does have is pretty cool and well done, but development seems to have petered off. For the amount of gameplay it has, and from what I see, is ever likely to have, I would not reccommend the game for more than a few bucks.
