When I bought the game, I told myself: "Playing two characters with a single pad, what a silly idea".

3 hours later, when I finished, I understood how great the game was.
An absolutely awesome, beautiful and emotional story with innovative gameplay, albeit quite short, that I will probably remember for a long time.

Don't forget a pad (played with a DS3 pad with MotionInJoy drivers).

Disclaimer: I paid for this game.

Overall, I would say that this game is great. It is short. it says I have played 2.6 hours at the time of writing this but might change in the future if I come and try and get all the achievements. For this game you will need a controller like it says and even then sometimes you will have one of the brothers go in the wrong direction. I loved the atmosphere and overall the story except for one part but will not spoil that for anyone reading this. On my first run through, I only got one achievement so if you are an achievement hunter I would recommend reading the achievements before playing since some are pretty obvious after looking back.

I enjoyed my overall experience with the game and would recommend it but not at full price just because of the hours played / cost feels a little high. It does do on sale at a normal pace and it will depend on what you consider a good played vs cost ratio that is good for you.

Felt like experiencing a movie actively, rather than passively. This game should be a case study on how to tell a story well through gameplay alone.

Controlling the 2 brothers is used masterfully in a way that lets you experience their relationship to one another and to other NPCs, moving beyond just showing these to you. Also, even though there is no (intelligible) dialog, you always know what is being said by interpreting gestures and tone. Having to understand what everyone is saying by feeling and reacting to it yourself is another clever way of involving you in the story.

I thought controlling 2 characters at the same time would be complicated, but the game makes it easy. Mostly this is because the only other thing you can do besides moving is a context-specific interaction with objects and characters. The puzzles aren't hard either, and are mainly just obstacles that serve to convey the relationship between the 2 brothers and keep the game fun. You'll never get stuck, which is appropriate for this game - the journey is meant to flow. That flow isn't impeded by the achievements either - they are mostly rewards for observing things not far off the main path, and none are missable because of chapter select. Thus, completionists can sit back and enjoy the game, and return later to 100% it with minimal backtracking. The game length is short, but exactly right - it took me 4.5 hours to finish w/ 9 achievements, and about 10 more minutes to return to a few places and 100%.

The scenery and music (ambient mostly) are beautiful and contribute to feeling like you're on an adventure. Some spots were so nice that I ended up stopping and taking a screenshot. The tone gets slightly dark in a few places, which didn't really bother me, but came as a surprise based on my initial expectations. It's not really a kids game. The story is a bit sad, but not in a manipulative way, more in a way that reveals that you played something you cared about.

Bottom line - set aside a few hours and play Brothers if you can appreciate a good story and don't always need fast-paced action or high-intensity puzzle solving.

Quick Summary: Short puzzle platformer focused on “show, don’t tell” plot, with controls that take some getting used to. You can finish the game in a few hours, and it will take close to that long to get used to controlling the two brothers.

Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons has a fairly generic plot, where two brothers are going on a quest to save an injured family member, but nothing is really spelled out for you because the game uses a made up language and there are no subtitles. You literally don’t know what anyone is saying for the entire game. However, you can pretty much guess what’s going on from the context of each conversation. Your ultimate goal is to get to a magical tree and return with a healing potion.

First of all, as the game’s Steam page tells you Brothers requires a controller to play. In this case an Xbox 360 controller worked for me, and I read somewhere that Playstation controllers may have trouble. The reason for the controller requirement is that you’re controlling two characters at the same time with 2 different joysticks. This is not like Trine where you switch between controllable characters, you actually need to control both brothers on the screen simultaneously. If you’re a keyboard + mouse person like me you’ll have some trouble getting used to the control scheme, especially in the portions later on with simultaneous swinging/platforming.

+Interesting concept of dual controls. Maybe I just haven’t played as many games as some people but I’ve never seen this before.
+The game’s puzzles are pretty intuitive, and you probably won’t need much in the way of hints to solve most of them.
+A touching story, despite not understanding any dialogue.

-A very short game, with very little replay value. I beat it in about 3 hours and will probably never play it again now that I’ve experienced the story.

Overall the game is a fun, short diversion. The Steam score of “overwhelmingly positive” is probably due to everyone giving it thumbs for being “worth playing.” It isn’t the greatest game ever, but it’s a nice diversion for an afternoon.

This game took me completely by surprise.

Which is really surprising because, after the first few minutes, it was nearly a disappointment: graphics fine but not sophisticated, a touching story which did not seem very promising and characters too simple. And then I let it drop in a corner of my library and forgot about it until I decided to get back on it more than a year afterwards, mainly because the achievements were easy to get.
And finally, this game astonished me and was clearly much better than I expected it to be.

I was totally absorbed by the unique atmosphere that characterizes it. I’m not surprised it has the tag "Atmospheric". With the atmosphere somewhat childish of the beginning, I was not expecting to discover a universe both gloomy, melancholic and yet very colorful afterwards. This conjunction of the theme of death on a bright picture painted with softened features worthy of a children's story is quite striking and almost unsettling. And let’s not forget about the history of these very young characters which ends up tearing your guts out.
The harmony that unites the two brothers is at the heart of this adventure which has a rather special gameplay where the two characters must be controlled at the same time to progress. I play with the keyboard and it took me some time to get used to it especially as one of the two protagonists requires a qwerty keyboard but I just had to manually switch it to azerty with Shift + Alt, and you get the hang of it really easily.

Clearly, I was blown away and I highly recommend this little gem.

One of the most touching games out there.

One of the most beautiful, touching and relaxing video games out there.Brothers-A Tale of Two Sons is a co-op adventure game wich is played by a single person, simultaneously controlling the two characters. The game itself is not very long, but it's totally worth it.

Here are the things I liked the most about the game.

  • The visual style is very appealing and colourful.

  • Great soundtrack and little bit of humor.

  • A story that is not complicated at all,but will leave you sad for eternity. :D

  • The two characters have different skills wich you often have to combine to traverse trough the level.

  • Puzzles wich are hardly challengeing, but fun to solve

  • Five or six environments through wich you travel, all very different than the previous one.

  • Although the controls are not very bad on keyboard I strongly recommend playing with a controller, your expirience will be much better.

These are the things I liked the most. The game is fantastic and although small,I'll always remember it as one of the best games I've played.

Though there is no clear language spoken in this game, its pretty much understood that two brothers are set out on a journey to find some miracle cure for their father. What makes this game unique is you must control both brothers at the same time, which with the keyboard is especially challenging. Beautiful scenery and a simplified story line make this game worthy.

Aside from the challenging game play with the keyboard, which I'm told having a controller is much easier, the gameplay is interesting and amazing. There's not any real fighting per se, but some simple puzzles you must solve to continue on. Took me about 3 hours to complete it but still well worth the money.

stupid ninja onions made my face wet near the end.

This is a really short and sad game, with a good story, different gameplay (you control two characters, the brothers, at the same time, yes SAME time), beautiful visuals, etc.
Maybe it's a little too expensive for such a short game, but if you buy it in a sale, it's worth it. At the beginning it's a little hard to control two characters at the same time, but you'll learn that fast, I promise. Emotional people, maybe you can save your tears to the end...

An absolute masterpiece that, in the beginning, can be questionably dull- Awkward mechanics can drive some away, but put a little time into it and the result is an emotional piece of art. 10/10, Everybody should play this.

Take a friend with you and prepare for an emotional journey! Albeit pretty short, the game successfully manages to capture the player into its story with beautiful scenery, engaging characters, emotional moments, and an incredible amount of attention to details. The developers recommend that you play with a controller, but you can easily play with a friend using only a keyboard, as I did. Maybe the full price is just a little bit too much, but on sale it is without a doubt a must-buy!
