About This Game

Say hello to the creative shooter. Ace of Spades: Battle Builder is the first-person shooter that lets you create your battleground, destroy it, then create it again. Up to 32 players choose from seven unique classes and jump into team-based, multiplayer mayhem across an endlessly evolving battlefield, to construct, destruct and take out the opposition.

Key Features

  • CONSTRUCTION, COMBAT AND CREATIVITY - Complete strategic and creative freedom is at your disposal to annihilate the enemy however you like.
  • MULTIPLAYER MAP CREATION - Ace of Spades: Battle Builder includes a map creator mode, which allows you to collaborate with up to 23 friends and make your very own Ace of Spades battleground! Custom tools and over 400 prefabricated structures will help you build the ultimate multiplayer maps, which you can upload and share via Steam Workshop.
  • CUSTOM GAME MODES - Play the way YOU want to play! Host your own match or create your own mode using the wide selection of settings available to you. From fine tuning your favourite mode & classes, to turning TDM into a Spade-only grudge match with predefined teams, as a lobby host you can:
  • Set your lobby to invite only, friends, or open, and also have full control over who joins with the host ‘kick’ function
  • Sort players into specific teams – great for clan matches, or for playing on the same team as your friends
  • Choose the map you want to play, official or player made
  • Set the size of the match, and it’s duration
  • Set up vanilla game modes or tweak them to suit by using an extensive set of customisable game rules

    Tons Of Insane Game Modes

    • Team Deathmatch - The Grandaddy of them all. Kill the enemy; try not to die doing it.
    • Zombie Mode - Survive the onslaught of the living dead. Failing that, join them.
    • Classic CTF – Back to basics, one class, one loadout, the classic rifle. You know what to do.
    • Capture the Flag – No FPS is complete without CTF. Protect your flag, take the enemies’.
    • Demolition - Demolish the enemy’s base before your own is decimated.
    • Diamond Mine - Dig up precious diamonds & defend the diamond carrier as they attempt to cash in their discovery at your team’s base for points.
    • Occupation - A game mode that pits offence against defence. The defensive team must protect their teams based in the green occupied area of the map while the attacking Blue team try to destroy the enemy position by successfully detonating bombs.
    • VIP – Play in 1930’s era Chicago or LA’s Alcatraz and protect your mob boss from the opposing Mafioso.
    • Territory Control - Claim key tactical areas of the map for your team, gain a majority territory control of the map to win, or even better go for glory and take over the entire map!

I put up with this game's rather jarring flaws for about a year or so in the hope that they would be sorted out. But due to the nature of the engine and the fact that there's no such thing as a Cython developer (not a typo!) with 5 years' experience I seriously doubt they will ever get this game out of its constant state of disrepair.

The official streams on Twitch don't happen anymore, the game keeps crashing, the balance needs fixing (I'm talking about how there's no good counter against a Miner, so stop crying about the "noob snipers" or "noobtube" or asking for an SMG buff), and to be blunt everyone's moved to Block 'n' Load so the forums are just filled with Lincent talking out of his shared speech and excretion orrifice saying the same thing over and over again and thinking that he is even remotely funny.

This project has simply not been managed at all ever since Jagex started work on the original AoS (I'm talking around about 0.61, where the updates were starting to slow down horrendously), and it's a miracle they managed to bring some coherence out of what I hear was at release a huge griefing simulator with just about every sense of user content stripped away, user content that was creatable in the original AoS.

And they have constantly farted around with the issue of dedicated servers, trying really hard to slightly misunderstand us every step of the way. Even when they released their "dedicated servers", it was via a Multiplay panel, which was never what we asked for anyway, and having actually used the admin tools I can tell you right now that they are absolutely pathetic - the only redeeming thing really was that they forgot to remove the IRC bot, which is absolutely vital when adminning AoS 0.x. It's just too damn impractical to ban someone properly - you have to download the log file, look up the Steam ID, add it to the banned Steam IDs list, and then RESTART THE SERVER.

That's pretty much what's wrong with it. It's a sad tragedy of what happens when management just outright sucks, and what you end up with is a game that's broken and stays broken and doesn't get updated properly.

There's actually some really good ideas in this, but due to the things I stated in the second paragraph, and the fact that if this ever gets any more updates at all it'll be months before that happens, I cannot recommend this game.

And due to the fact that AoS 0.75 is generally terrible, I can't recommend that, either. Hell, even the AoS I'm writing this review for has a properly balanced SMG that's actually fun to use.

Play Quake instead.

It was better before it became "Ace of Spades: Battle Builder".
Lobbies were easier to setup and had more people playing. Don't waste your time on this one.

In the vast time I have owned this game, it's only gone down in quality. It's because a giant kidfest that once was a create innovative FPS experience.

Servers are dieing down, and from the few players I do find games with, they usally last around 2 minutes before they scream at you and leave for playing an OP class.

Do Not Buy.

So much lost potential...

No one plays this game anymore. The best example of "appealing to the general public". Ace of Spades (and the new Ace of Spades: Battle Builder that they made to get more people to waste money) was originally an indie game that filled a niche genre of voxel trench warfare.
They ruined it by adding Jetpacks.

If you want a blocky shooter, get Block n' Load. It seems to have been designed to actually be played like CoD.
This was never designed to be CoD, so they tried to make it like that.

And failed.

At first as i saw this game i was like:
Yay i want this! This looks cool!

After i played it:
Yea its actually not that great.

To the point.
The game is good up to a certain point. And that point doesnt start with the game. It starts with the players. The game itself is very nice and runs smoothly. It functions properly and the controls are easy to understand. The concept of building is easier then in some other 3D games i saw so far especially because these buildingblocks are mostly big structures you can place. The gamemodes are funny and also easy. It can be frustrating sometimes though because the maps are fully destructable. Even though i have to say that you can kill the entire enemy team as a zombie when you go and break the tower below them apart.

Now why would i say i wouldnt like the game that much?
Because of the community of this game.
When you begin to play this game you begin to understand that its normal people, dip♥♥♥♥♥ or 9 year old trolls that think everything stupid is funny that play this game. The first time i played something different then Zombie mode i went on a gamemode where you wouldnt respawn. I dont know the name currently but it wasnt the Zombie mode. Maybe it even was but i havent played the game for a long time so who cares. What happened was that i told this one guy to step out of my way because i was trying to snipe. And he begin to use explosives on me where i took damage from. Maybe it was from the fall to the ground or from the explosions itself but in the end i died from a guy that thought teamkilling is fun. A pure troll in the end that got me to leave to game instantly because i dont like playing with people like that.

In a different game, VIP mode, the entire team went everywhere but noone stayed with the VIP. The VIP who actually ran at the enemy as well and got killed instantly. Its not like the game is telling you in bigass letters that you are the VIP, Nooooooo. [Yes Sarcasm]. Upon asking him wtf he was doing he began to speak russian... I really dont care where people are from. But if you play an international game then speak atleast english. Its not called the World Language for no reason.
