“For all its charm, Thomas is more than just the super-minimalist-yet-incredibly-engaging tales of a few plucky AIs. It's the story of games. Of how they get made and played, of the joys and frustrations they bring and of the thousands of tiny iterative processes that go into evolving single titles and the entire medium into their best forms.”
Evan Narcisse, Kotaku

“It proves that you don't need tens of millions of dollars and hundreds of staff to make a game story worth telling, just a good hook, an engaging vision, and a whole lot of heart.”
9/10 – Josh Tolentino, Destructoid

“The understated aesthetic design and unusual co-op puzzles will absorb you for the game’s duration – the wit and personality of the writing, though, will stay with you for much longer.”
8/10 – Keza MacDonald, IGN

About This Game

Thomas Was Alone, and then, Well, he Wasn't.

Thomas Was Alone is an indie minimalist 2D platformer about friendship and jumping and floating and anti-gravity. Guide a group of rectangles through a series of obstacles, using their different skills together to get to the end of each environment.
Listen to awesome music by David Housden. Jump over rectangles meticulously placed by Mike Bithell. Listen to voiceover read wistfully and a bit amusingly by Danny Wallace.

Thomas Was Alone tells the story of the world's first sentient AIs, and how they worked together to, well, not escape: Escape is a strong word. 'Emerge' might be better. 'Emerge' has an air of importance about it, while keeping the myriad plot twists and superhero origin stories you'll discover under wraps. We didn't even mention the bouncing. That'd be overkill.

Key Features

  • Beat 100 levels, and uncover the story of the AIs.
  • Utilize the unique skills of 10+ characters.
  • Immerse yourself in David Housden's critically acclaimed procedural score.
  • Chuckle along to Danny Wallace's narration.

Somehow this game made me magically care about hopping shapes. I dont know what kind of black magic is involved but it is worth playing through.

Let your armor down and free your imagination. Soon you will begin to relate intrinsically with these various colored blocks. I've experienced friends being torn apart and reunited. Love both unrequited and freely given. Isolated individuals who found they belonged after all.

I definitely ran through a thorough gamut of moods while traversing this world, and found many of its moments to be both enriching and emotionally involving.

I've always believed that the auditory aspect of a game, or any artform truly, is a big part of what makes it genuinely complete, if not at the very least augmenting it in a substantial capacity (when done correctly). This title's soundtrack truly added nuance to the various moments experienced throughout, running from those of a sentimental or adventurous nature, and everything in between. The soundtrack is fitting and stellar.

The exquisite narration also adds the well-needed elements of humanity and intimacy into this abstract environment, motivating understanding and inspiring relatability.

I also consider it a boon when a game doesn't overstay its welcome (as in the example of many puzzle titles I've played in the past). Just be certain not to binge. Instead, play it sporadically for the most possible relaxation and enjoyment.

A truly charming game which earns well its rating: 8/10

We are not alone.

The gameplay is fine, though it is not what keeps you playing. The surprisingly lovable characters and story is what holds this game together and proves that a couple of rectangles can be part of an interesting and fun journey. The gameplay kind of annoyed me a bit towards the end, especially since most of the puzzles are really easy, but is definitely enjoyable in its brevity for the story alone.

This was an amazing game. i was unable to actually finish it myself at the time of writing this review, unfortuatnetly, but I found a playthrough of it I could watch after I got stuck (Minor chase sequnce and I suck at even the easiest of those kinds of things) and just...
The story draws you in, the narrator is great, and the platforming doesn't distract from the narration and vise versa. I can't believe it, but I was emotionally comprimised by a bunch of rectangles and I regret nothing.
It's not a long game (I got a little over halfway through before I got stuck, and that took me about an hour), so if you want a short-ish game with an amazing, emotional story, I highly, HIGHLY reccomend.

Got this game as part of a bundle (humble bundled) and did not really look in to it as I thought it looked just like a simple puzzle game.

Oh how wrong I was!

Thomas was alone, has a story that made me feel feelings towards several quadrilateral, that I never knew would be possible.

The puzzles start easy and get harder as more elements (and characters) are introduced, though I spent some time on a few levels trying to get to the right place or work out ordering, I found the puzzles in the story were never too hard to cause a rage quit.

The art is simplistic but makes sense with the narrative, and the music…oh the music is beautiful and just helps to make this more than just a game, but a piece of video game art.

For what I thought was just a throw away game has made a big impression on me and I am very impressed at what it turned out to be.

If you were to tell me that a platforming game about colored blocks would make me feel more emotion that 99% of the games I own, I would think you're nuts. But that is what this game achieved. This game will hold a special place in my heart forever.

P.S.- Claire is my favorite.

As it is advertised yet so much better then it appears. I went in thinking it was way to simple just playing as rectangles and it had to get boring quick. Nope, I was in for a surprise. Yes there is rectangles and more rectangles, but you wouldnt even want it any other way after playing. If Tetris were to be made into a narrated puzzle platformer with only rectangles and a square, this would pretty much smash it! xD

A really good puzzle game with an interesting story, starts out simple and then adds new mechanics later on that adds a nice challange, a very good game and throughly enjoyable, I like the humour in it too.

I especially like the idea of giving characters names and personailites to add to the story and it makes the game a lot more interesting instead of having it be a boring old puzzler game, It's a very good game with interesting ways of introducing character and mechanics, I also like the use of mechanics for different characters eg. Claire being able to float and Laura being a bounce pad so that you need to think of different ways to get everyone through using teamwork and every other character if needed.

I think my favourite part about this game about shapes with names is that the characters have relationships that build up. It's a lot more in depth of a game than you'd think and I love that

I recommend it.

If ur an indie game lover and platform lover this game is the Perfect game for you! This game is about a couple of rectangles and a couple of cubes who are trying to jump from platform to platform, while in the meantime some rectangles can jump very high and others can't jump that high you have to make them work together to complete the levels which makes it a fun game because u have to control multiple rectangles/cubes. The narration and music of the game is pretty cool too, and yeah this game really makes time fly by, because some levels are pretty hard and others are easy. 7,99 is an amazing price for this game because u will get the content you would expect from a game from that price range, it has lots of levels and im almost halfway through now after playing it for 2,2 hours :)!

Would really recommend this game!
