DQDX Patch #4 -- Version 2.0.4c

We now have version 2.0.4c released. This fixes several bugs and plugs some major memory leaks and should drastically improve performance.

Status:
Windows: YES
Windows XP: YES
Linux: YES
Mac: YES

Changelog:
- Fixed major memory leaks in battle
- Fix jumbled spells in "sorceress" sidequests
- Fixed false New Game+ message when getting the alternate ending
- Added renderer information to title screen (left side)
- Fixed crash on late-game NG+ boss battle in the Spanish localization

There is still a lot of work for me to do. There's a lot of little bugs I want to squash, and there's still performance gains to be made, but it should now be possible for most of you to push the endless battles much further than you could before. I will note that you should be able to get slightly better performance if you go into the options menu and turn off battle numbers and AOE highlights, and obviously running the game in a lower resolution helps too.

We also just added Windows XP support, but it's still compiling on the server, I'll update this post when it's ready. You can try it on test_public in the meantime:

DQDX Patch #3.5 -- Version 2.0.3a

UPDATE 06/23/2016 12:21 PM:
I've just pushed 2.0.4 to the test_public beta branch, which fixes the memory leak many of you reported. Please test it! Details here:
http://steamcommunity.com/app/218410/discussions/0/358415738185811228/

2.0.3a is up now on the default branch. I've optimized even more things.

Status:
- Windows: YES
- Mac: YES Deploying now, check back later
- Linux: YES Deploying now, check back later

Changelog:
- Optimized tooltips (shouldn't cause a pause when drawing anymore)
- Optimized healer (square) range previews with the same trick
- Optimized circular range previews
- Optimized menu health bars on the side panels
- Optimized status effects & AOE attack effect sprites
- Optimized collision logic

In case you were wondering -- the range previews are most likely the cause of the stuttering during boosting & selecting defenders. Menu health bars were a hidden drag on performance as they get updated a lot, especially at 16x speed, and of course status effects & AOE sprites are everywhere. And collision is at the very core of the engine. I'm interested in seeing how the optimized version performs.

Please let me know if this improves performance for you.

Also, whenever posting an issue or bug report:
PLEASE include the exact version number you see on the title screen in the lower right hand corner.

Sometimes the steam client doesn't download an update, or I just haven't rolled the update out for your operating system yet, and it's very important to know whether the version you're having issues with is the same one I've just "fixed" or not.

This build seems stable so I will now roll it out to Mac & Linux as well (and our other stores, I haven't forgotten you, GOG customers!)

There's more work for me to do in optimization and in general bug fixes, I'm just going down the triage list from most to least severe. Thanks to everyone who's been reporting issues.

Special Edition

Defender's Quest Deluxe (DX) Edition is here! Improved graphics, more story, better performance, more of everything you love!

About This Game

Defender's Quest is a Tower-Defense/RPG Hybrid (Think Final Fantasy Tactics meets Tower Defense). It focuses on three things: tactical depth, customization, and story. That means no random encounters, no spikey-haired emo kids, no forced time sinks, and no tedious, repetitive battles.

The battle system builds off of tower defense, with individual characters taking the place of towers. Each character levels-up, learns skills, and equips gear individually, allowing the player to customize their battle experience and strategy. The overall game structure is similar to "tactical" RPG's, but with a real-time battle system. Game speed is adjustable, and commands can even be issued while the game is paused.

It also features an engaging, character-driven story written by an actual English major! The story strives to be fast-paced, snappy, and always relevant to gameplay with minimal exposition. Finally, it's got options and accessibility settings out the wazoo, so that you can have the best possible experience!

--------
NOTE: this game is currently locked at 30 FPS. This is mitigated by three factors:

  • You have full control of time, so it doesn't affect reactions.
  • The sprite sheets wouldn't animate any faster at 60 FPS anyway
  • A full HD/60 FPS upgrade is coming soon as a free upgrade.

Friggin awesome. Just get it and be happy.

Fun story, well balanced battles, good TD game. Only rivaled by the kingdom rush and field runners series.

If you like tower defence get this game.

Best tower defence I've ever played. Each character is unique, the story is serious at times ridiculous at others, but good all the while, and while the gameplay isn't the most adventurous formula, it rocks what it has, and is fun the entire time.

10/10 would ship raging barbarian with timid librarian again.

Awesome game, extremely addictive. Might be the best value game I've bought on steam for the amount of gameplay.

This game was amazing back when I first got it for cheap cheap from a Steam coupon. I saw it was a tower defense game, and I said to myself, "This is only a few bucks, I'll try it out." Oh my, I didn't know how much I would love this game.

Defender's Quest is a tower defense game with RPG elements, mainly experience points, skill trees, and a good story inbetween the gameplay. It the game has humor, which is rather welcome. The gameplay is where this game really shines.

This is simply the best tower defense game I've ever played. You may have played a tower defense game before, but you haven't played Defender's Quest. It has a lot of depth to its gameplay, it has a very intuitive UI and an unobtrusive tutorial that is very helpful. Tutorial can be turned off entirely in the options, if you really want to. While you're at it, you can increase the experience and gold you get from the game to make it easier, or crash it into the ground and make the game harder. The music fits the game's atmosphere perfectly. I haven't even mentioned that you can mod every aspect of this game yet. Go look in the workshop; the creators of the game made a free sci-fi version of the game just to show you how much flexibility there is in regular modding.

Everything I've mentioned was made better with the recent update. I recommend this game wholeheartedly. 10/10.

This is a really fantastic game. This is the most fun I've had playing tower defense since playing custom maps in Warcraft 3

The replayability of each level adds a lot of depth to the game, it's fun getting stronger and going back to get the higher tier stars in maps i've been through before

Has a high replayability for me. The story is fine, the grinding and (later) high difficulty doesn't bother me and I like the active magic abilitys of the libraromancer.

Also I'd totally NOT wear a t-shirt to battle.
You are right Slak you sexy, redhaired ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥!

This is how you do it DEVS
When you do update or redux version old owners get it, not having to buy it again! Also nice tease for next game :)

Pros
Graphics got even nicer
Great gameplay for TD game
Quite funny story and characters
Lot of levels and difficulty settings
You can actualy set difficulty of grinding so playing extra challenges is more manageable!
Steam Workshop Integration
"ARG" bassed special bonuses in game

Cons
Steam Workshop disables achievements (game should state it after you enable mods)
Some challenges have only one proper solution (in case of hidden achievement it mades whole playtrough one big puzzle)

Unreal that this has slipped through my radar for almost 3 years. A tower defense game where your towers are people that you actually care about, not just fire tower #23. The mixture of RPG elements just puts it over the top. Extremely worth the money and I'm only 2 hours in!

P.S. The writing is pretty damn funny at times.

What can I say? Watch the videos above. Look at the user reviews. People LOVE this game. The Devs, LOVE the people who love this game. They gave us a FREE HD remaster. They even give you a Demo to try before you buy. What can I POSSIBLY say about this game that hasn't been said already in all of that? It is one of MY favorite TD games, if not the best TD game out there. It's simple, not too flashy, not too frustrating, humorous and has RPG elements. These Towers aren't just thoughtless machines driven to kill because you ordered them to... No, that one there? That's Slak the shirtless Berserker with the deranged mind and the awesome sword ripping up those ghouls on the tip of that island, right in the middle of the carnage where he can do the most damage. GO SLAK KILL, KILL, KILL! BWHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH! Yeah, these guys are my peeps, my group, MY ARMY. They ARE SO MUCH MORE than towers. So what can I say? PLAY. THE. GAME. ~'nuff said. >:)

The Deluxe edition is a fantastic upgrade to an already solid indie tower defense game. The new graphics style is clean and looks good at all resolutions. RPG elements and clever options keep replayability high, and the game has a great sense of humor.

Further, the developer has an excellent history of transparency, excellent dev blog materiel, and genuinely cares about this being a great experience. Highly recommended for any tower defense fans.

I feel bad for letting my love for this game unshared for so long, so I'll take advantage of the steam promotion to atone for that fault. That game is just the best tower defense I ever played. The story is great, the mechanics are innovating and the hero mode and the RPG-like skilltrees make you care for your teammates (which act as your towers). The NG+ and NG++ have alternative stories that give you a great replayability, and there are side quests and hidden achievements as well! And if you don't like the farming side or if the difficulty is too high for you, everything can be adjusted directly in the menu, and the game data is crystal clear and can be modified to cheat to your heart content if that makes you happy ^^ 97/100

This is a beautiful little game. If you like tower defense, and you enjoy RPG mechanics and tropes, just get this game. Easily one of the most enjoyable TD games I've ever played.

The dev has also just released a deluxe version for free for all owners which redoes all the graphics into high resolution, expands the campaign, and brings the game up to 60 fps. So apart from being a good game it has solid devs which are worth supporting.

I buy a lot of indie games, not all of them work out or make me glad I bought them, this is one that definitely did and continues to.
