What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We're now at a point in development where we feel it's important to put this game in the hands of more users, to receive more feedback, and in doing so, elevate the game to even higher levels of fun factor. We absolutely need your help and Steam Early Access in order to do that!”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“It's true, we have a lot of work still left to do, we're not beating around the bush there. But we refuse to let this game end up as an infinite lingerer on Steam Early Access. A lot more content is planned, so if Zombie Playground™ draws enough interest, our ultimate, internal goal would be to have it complete, polished, and sparkly, within a 6 month time period. We absolutely love working on it, so hopefully our passion shows through in the Early Access build!”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

  • Merit badges (selectable buffs)
  • Trading Cards and Achievements
  • Additional missions and honest-to-goodness quests
  • Expand the current level to more areas, which would be akin to adding more levels
  • We have at least 6-8 more enemies and bosses we'd like to get into the game

  • Dialogue callouts "Hey guys, health here!" and more
  • More weapons and aesthetic items (already in the works!)
  • Steamline networking and include jump-in/jump-out multiplayer flexibility
  • Competitive coop play. Possibly zombified renditions of: king of the hill, red rover, crack the whip, tag, etc
  • And yes finally, the toughest one of all, PvP. It would be a tall order but naturally, the idea of PVP - zombies vs. kids - has come up many times. (and, for the record, we really like the idea)

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“You can find a detailed write up of the current state of this Early Access version on our Steam Early Access landing page under 'Key Features.' We listed everything you can expect to see, point by point, with your purchase. Please check it out so that you know exactly what to expect with this Steam Early Access game. That said, this is a Beta, it is an unfinished game, so expect many bugs and anomalies as well. We can't stress it enough, if you are not familiar with Steam Early Access DO NOT BUY THIS GAME or you may be disappointed. (And we certainly don't want that!)”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The price of the Zombie Playground™ will not change when we leave Steam Early Access.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Since this game originally started out as a Kickstarter Campaign, we have engaged our community from the very beginning. We wouldn't be at this point otherwise! The ZPG community are the heroes of Zombie Playground™ and we intend to keep it that way. Perusing our forums you'll notice that we reply to every user comment and/or feedback. That is the foundation of our existence, so why would we want to collapse the building now!? You will be heard!”

About This Game

Zombie Playground™ is Goonies meets Attack the Block meets The Walking Dead. The mood we want to capture in Zombie Playground is the feeling that you had as a child when you were completely immersed in your imagination fighting monsters and doing things you thought were cool from your favorite movies, comics, and video games.

Stealth Studios Inc., in collaboration with Abyssal Arts LLC and Titutitech SCP, has worked long and hard to create a game that delivers on the promise of our original vision. But have no illusion, this is on Steam Early Access for a reason: it is a true Beta. We have a lot of work left to do, so expect many rough edges. That said, please know that this Beta is the culmination of every ounce of effort by every single team member, bar none. Zombie Playground™ is made with the brains, disease, and puke of all involved - that means heart! We've put everything we have into this development, and we intend to put a lot more.

Gameplay in Zombie Playground is a hybrid of third person shooter and action RPG mechanics set in a cooperative zombie survival horror arena.

Key Features - What Me Worry??

Beta version of the game: This game is a work in progress. DO NOT BUY THIS GAME if you expect a finished game. Having said that, we do regular updates, and we absolutely listen to our community feedback and suggestions with the goal to eventually achieve optimal fun factor!

1 Arena Style Map: Classroom Building Arena Map comprised of a Courtyard, a Main Entrance, and areas for Language Arts, Biology, Computer Science, and Music.

Multiple Enemy Types + BOSS FIGHT! Normal, +Elite, and even a Big Bad Boss! From crouched zombies, to vicious adult zombies, to the dreaded mopper of the halls... Buckethead, the Janitor! Can you topple this giant flesh bag and live to tell the tale? (If not, try with some friends!)

2 Playable Classes: 'Bully' is your damage dealing, tanky type class, where 'Rascal' is akin to an agility, or glass cannon, class. Both have their own stats and abilities: Bully-Bomb, Bully-Buff, Rascal-Can't Touch This, and Rascal-Speed Demon.

2 Playable Weapon Styles: Each class has both full melee and ranged combat capabilities, complete with combos and finishers. Why sacrifice one for the other when you can have both!?

4 Unique Weapon Choices (currently) to choose from: 2 melee weapons and 2 ranged ranged weapons. (And many more in the pipeline!)

Missions: We’ve got basic missions in the game, as well as the code base for many more. We’ll be building and tweaking these over the months to come, along with some honest-to-goodness quests!

Tons of Gear!: We have over 200 different aesthetic assets in the game at present, and more are coming! All customization is currently unlocked for testing via Steam Early Access, but will eventually need to be earned in game with XP. (Including pets!)

XP and Account Leveling: Save your XP! Experience earned in the game will eventually be how you unlock items. Do you love that certain backpack, hairstyle, or pair of shoes? Enjoy the open access to customization while it lasts, because soon you’ll have to earn fashionable goods – almost like it was a real game!

Up to 4 Player CO-OP Networking is a go! But sometimes, this function is more than 'one click' away. Should you encounter any issues, please check our forums on our main site.

Original Soundtrack by the Amazing Shawn Lee made specifically for Zombie Playground. Hot!! We were lucky enough to collaborate with Shawn in order to bring some sweet funky beats, crossed with an 80's style retro feel, to Zombie Playground. Some of Shawn's other credits include Bully, Tales from the Borderlands, and Sleeping Dogs.

Keyboard (or Controller) Breakdown: Be sure to check out the keyboard commands refresher, it will help you understand how to play the game better, complete with detailed descriptions of combos, finishers, and abilities. You can find it on our home page forums.

Terrible graphics, Extremely high sensitivity, game ignores character customise choices basically making you look like a shorter version of the Stranger Things kid, framerates around 70/80 at the main menu and tanks like hell down to 5/6 along with the lag it controls like ♥♥♥ either with a controller or keyboard and mouse and options are pretty much non-existent.

I backed this game on kickstarter forever and a day ago. I even won an ingame contest for backers and won a hat in real life. It's Mighty no. 9 with Zombies basically

I backed this game a long time ago, and perhaps I should have given it more play time but I got stuck at the "Find the classrooms" part. The game is imaginative, or at least the idea of the game is. My largest complaint is the camera, it's super-sensitive, and perhaps you can turn that down in options but the options menu isn't in game, you must leave the game to look at it, and well... I wasn't that excited to give it another go and wait on loading to see if it did. I hope this game becomes something great, at this moment though, perhaps I should be thankful we at least got something from our money.

The concept was neat, but the devs seem to have abandoned this game in an unplayable state. No updates since October 2015 and no contact on the forum. Content consists of a single level and a bunch of cosmetics, and the gameplay is really unpolished.

Game has a lot of potential. I've been a kickstarter backer waiting patiently for a long time. I'd like to enjoy it more, but not until our extra keys are given out, and multiplayer upped. I'll change this to a positive one day, if this is still around and they've updated.

Great potentual, may need to fix some of the zombie spawning problems cause a lot of them come all at the same time, would be better if this was more randomised. The display size and pixels of the game need to be fixed. but so far i like what i see :) Keep on working on it

It had a fairly interesting approach to the zombie game genre, kind of a arcade feel, now i just feel like this game doesn't provide any action that doesnt seemingly get old quick, they have microtransactions ( IN A ♥♥♥♥ING EARLY ACESS GAME.), and most of all, the game just feels like a joke.

Right now I can't recommend this game. Yes it is in early access and it has potential, but there are a lot of issues. It hasn't been updated since Halloween and there really isn't that much content. You pretty much get to play the school area over and over for all missions. Online mode bugs out for the person who isn't the host, causing them to force close the game. The leveling system jumps all around. I was level 7, then went to level 9 then level 4, make up your mind lol. But yeah, 14.99 for what you get now is not worth it.

I've waited over 3 years for this game since I backed the kickstarted and I got to say that I'm not impressed at all. The sheer amount of content is very disturbing and the poor animations when running and hitting made the game feel very stale. I got no enjoyment out of slaying all those zombies. It just felt plain and boring. I want satisfaction out of dominating zombies and with smoother animations I think the game would be much more enjoyable.

Hopefully this game will be worth coming back to at a later date, but at the moment I can't recommend it.

As a backer of the Kickstarter, maybe I'm just rationalizing my donation, but I'm really just happy they're still working on the game after so long and am pleasantly surprised with what they have so far because for months at a time I would forget the game even exists only to check up on it every now and then forget about it again. They could've easily just have dropped the project long ago with the difficulties they were having and I wouldn't have even noticed, so I really admire their dedication to it and the backers.

With that said, the game still needs a ton of work done on it, but I feel like they have a pretty solid foundation with pretty much all the basic gameplay elements laid out. They really just need to add more of everything, smooth out the controls and combat, and of course do a lot of bug testing and gameplay balancing. The game is pretty playable the way it is at the moment, but lacking so many of the promised gameplay elements you might do everything there is to do pretty quickly and grow tired of it.

Still, if the concept appeals to you and you like these kinds of games, it may be worth looking into and see if you'd enjoy watching it develop into a fully fleshed out game.

For an early access, its pretty good!

Its a action third person slaying zombie game with objectives ( its pretty basic for now)

There is currently 2 classes, ( 6 on release if i read right )

There is a some customization options (guns, melee weapons and clothing and there more to come )

Gameplay is good but the animations could be more fluid , so its a good thing that this game is in early access because the devs can work on this and others improvements to make this game one the best zombie slaying third person action game.

Cons: - Melee and ranged combat, its not that bad but its still need some adjustment.

Anyway , if you got the money and you love zombie slaying games than this is for you, buy without restraint.

* May change during early access

I waited a long time for this game. I followed the Kickstarter campaign, the forum updates and finally the Steam early access. I feel like I need an option for in between Yes and No. I like the art style, the options for customization, the music and the a lot of the gameplay. I have a huge problem with the camera work (more on that later) and the seeming lack of story/objective. I understand that this is a work in progress so here is what I'd like to see; the option for story mode and simple run and gun gameplay. More character options. More levels. Achievements. You see where I'm going. I think this is a good foundation and after the bugs are worked out and more content is added Zombie Playground will be a great addition to your game library. Fingers crossed.

Cute game but boring. Scarecely any reviews and no games in multiplayer lobby. I don't think many people bought this, and to be honest it isn't worth the price in it's current state. If you do pick it up look in the forums for detailed explanation of the controls because they are not in the game, even though it tries to fool you by offering a controls option which is entirely misleading. Kind of a waste of time and money if you ask me.

I highly recommend this game.

Is it perfect? Nope.
Does it have fun issues like Zombies coming through doors? Yeah, occasionally, But so does DayZ and that's been out since December 2013.

They're not the same game of course. DayZ is survival and this is, well fun.

You get to run around as a kid, customize your character to wear gas masks, have backpacks and a dog. Plastic baseball bat? You've got it. Nail guns (not child friendly) they're there too.
Paintball gun? Yep.

Remember those paper cutters you had in school that you used to be terrified of because you thought your hand was gonna get chopped right off? Well those are weapons too.

It needs some work, sometimes in Multiplayer you'll get locked in place. Sometimes one of your friends is just floating and sliding about, but on his screen he's being a bad A 3rd grader. No one is judging.
It's challenging enough that it holds my interest.

I posted a screenshot and the dev commented. How cool is that? They're paying attention.

it's really easy to get into a game and play when you've only got a few minutes to kill, and if you want to invest more time I'm sure it's the same level of easy.

I don't normally write reviews, but I saw this one had mixed reviews on the first day, and I don't think that's fair. It's fun, Worth the 15 dollars in my book and I've only played for a little over an hour and a half, however, I see myself putting a lot more into it.

If you're on the fence, watch some gameplay or streams of it, if you're a fan of supporting devs get this, but remember it's in Early Access so as mentioned, there will be some issues.

If you have no desire to play this then you probably didn't have a childhood where you got to play on a playground and pretend you were saving all your friends from monsters.

This game is good but you've got to like this sort of game to get enjoyment out of it.

It needs more work done to it but so far it's quite fun, there's not a lot to do at the moment but there's still a few different missions to do and the developers are working towards adding new stuff into it, not too sure if online is any good as only played the solo mode.

Pros:
Cheap and cheerful.
It's a zombie game.
It has an objective marker to show you where to go.

Cons:
Combat isn't the best. It locks you on to a zombie and forces you to strike in that certain direction which takes some of the freedom out of it.

This review probably isn't the best in terms of explaining the game but hopefully helpful enough for you to decide if you want to try it out :D I haven't played a lot of this game so there's possibly a lot of stuff I'm missing but this is what I picked up from the beginning of the game.

Here is some gameplay if you would like to take a look at the game before you buy it, the video may contain spoilers:

This game needs some serious work.
It's early access, but there isn't really a game to it at the moment.
They probably shouldn't have released this build to be honest.

I had issues with framerate and it didn't have an option to change graphic quality.
The customization seemed lacking, the battle system boring and bland.
I've followed this game for a long time and was excited to see what they had done, but then i played it.
Hopefully they'll put a lot of effort into it from here on, but as of now i wouldn't reccommend this.

If there was an option to vote "Wait till it gets better", I would chose that. It's a promising game, but right now it has a few issues that make playing it unenjoyable.

Well, the core of the game at least is in a promising state. Combat is fun enough to justify fighting zombies for hours and there is a fair amount of customization options already in the game. Probably more unlocks than one would be willing to grind for.

The problem is that in less than 2 hours I've already experienced everything available (apart from multiplayer). Another "bugger" (pun intended) is the framerate as the game runs terribly bad. There are complaints about the camera controls, though I quite like it as it is, provided that performance is fixed at some point.

Still, the dev remains relatively active in the forums so it's not an abandoned project, and once they fix the performance and add a bit more variety in terms of enemies, it would be quite fun to grind for those unlockables.

This is still early access, and it's great for early access. I love how I customized my character, but that's slightly off-topic. I haven't heard about this until today, and it once and a while skips a few frames and the sensitivity is out of whack for me, but that's most likely how my computer feels like acting right now. Anyway, it's definitely a good way to spend your money, even if you can barely afford it. It's a zombie game, so it doesn't sound original at first, of course, but I doubt there are many, (if any) games with similar themes. I haven't played much either, but it's awesome so far, heh.
