Sorry, this isn't gonna be a detailed review... Really I just wanted to throw my opinion out there. This game is really fun. You don't feel restricted to one thing, and even though some people say it's a grind, there are so so many things you can be doing. You can get any skill you want and you don't even have to make an alt character. It doesn't have a nice art style, but you get used to it. Some people complain about it being p2w but I don't agree. I did spend a ♥♥♥♥♥on of money, but that was only for fashion purposes. It is possible to get nice things fashion-wise through events and all that jazz anyway. It seems like everyone wants a perfect game. That's not Mabinogi. Just go play it for yourself.

Mabinogi: The Fantasy/Anime Life
(This hits the character limit, by the way. Scroll to the bottom for the important summary/spoiler.)

Mabinogi is my number one favorite game of all time. I'm not one for number ratings so base your opinions on my biased ones. This is the first time I've actually devoted time to seriously reviewing something, so feel free to leave me any feedback or whatever. I'll try not to spoil anything. Here we go.

The Graphics
This game is simultaneously great and terrible with graphics. Earlier content is standard, not too detailed or appealing, and may be all around bland. In my potentially terrible and possibly uneducated opinion, the game would leave more to be desired considering it's an anime inspired game.

AND YET...

Due to the lack of amazing cutting edge graphics, you can generally use your imagination to fill in the amazing level of detail. Also, considering how long ago the game was made, and how easy the game is to run (even if it doesn't run perfectly or crashes or whatever), I could let it slide. My toaster didn't short out, so it's a win in my book.

The Stories
This one is tricky. The game has a storyline based on many of it's major updates and they're labeled as generations. The writing and detail in most of the game's dialogue and story pretty much can be summed up in the word "anime" with you being the star of it all. My only complaint would have to be that some of the later generations seemed to be excuses for adding in newer skills to the game. Some things wouldn't add up to me while playing, and the skills you get being the ace in the hole to beat that certain end generation boss, or that last unexplained solution or clutch thing someone does to save the day inexplicably just screams "anime." The latest generation (Generation 20 as of this review) is the perfect example.

But hey! You can turn into a god of immense power with dope skills that do massive damage for no reason halfway through the story. So there's that.

The Gameplay (This is my favorite part. Try to stay with me on this one, of skim/skip it to save time.)
Playing Mabinogi is like playing a smaller, and simpler version of World of Warcraft. You run around this world, hit things to level up, run dungeons for loot and experience as per any other MMO of the like.

But Mabinogi is kind of special. Let's talk about skills first. Skills are grouped together and collectively add experience to a "talent" system, and upon leveling up, adds stats to your character. Every skill has a rank, which is increased by ability points earned from leveling up, and range from Novice->F->A->9->1, with 1 being the highest. With the transition from novice to F and A to 9 being instantaneous, that's a total of 16 ranks per skill. Some combat skills works in a basic Rock, Paper, Scissors fiasco(smash beats defense, counterattack beats smash, etc), while some works based on properly timing your skills to deal, avoid, and spread damage (looking at you, Gunslinger and Ninja). The non-combat skills and talents vary from the standard MMO cookie cutter stuff (Fishing, Cooking, Adventure, etc) to somewhat unique things that only playing the game could explain (Battle/Construct Alchemy, Wine Making, Carpentry, etc). The skills in the game are well complimented by the leveling system. On a side note, skills have certain requirements that have to be met to gain experience. The system feels broken/improperly scaled for most skills, but that's just an opinion. Anyway, this system allows you to take on literally anything at any time, which lets you make that perfect MMO/Anime character you've always dreamed of.

Let me also add briefly that the game has a hidden stat called combat power that guages your power based on how much you've leveled certain skills. Moving on...

Leveling up in Mabinogi is very different from other games due to the unlimited level cap for CUMULATIVE levels.
Here's the kicker though: you can only reach a maximum CURRENT level of 200.
To clarify, this means that as you play the game, you can play up to level 200 before you can't level up anymore (which is hard, tedious, and dumb), so to make playing the game fun again, you get to REBIRTH, which sets your character back to level 1, and lets you grind back up again for more ability points. Rebirthing works on a 24 hour limit up until cumulative level 1000, and afterwards works on a time frame of 1 week. Fortunately, you can reallocate every single point you get before you get there, which means at level 999, you can talk to an NPC who can set all of your skills back to novice and give you a chance to remake yourself entirely if you're not happy with the results. By the time you hit 1000, though, you'll be strong enough to handle majority of the game, if you haven't already, with the only main downside being that the game scales with you on some fronts in terms of enemy difficulty, which can lead to many instances of artificial difficulty.

Nexon is very good at creating that, by the way. Speaking of bad things, time for the opinionated negatives.

This all ties together, actually. Playing the game, you level up as you normally would, putting your points into your skills like you want to, and being the awesome character you want to be. Then you get to that dungeon or boss you can't beat that hits you like a truck because you're stuck in the asphalt in the center of the road. No problem. Go train your skills and get better at the game. By the time you get better though, you reach a level that ups the game difficulty, which makes the dungeon harder, and on top of that, the skills get harder to train, because the monsters that used to be "boss" level to you are only "powerful" now due to increased combat power, so you can't fulfill skill requirements as easily or as fast.

See where I'm going with this? The game mechanics can unknowingly make the game harder on you the stronger you get. This isn't a common problem due to Nexon locking the difficulty on most missions via updates, as well as making most missions "partyable", but when it hits you it hurts.

Phew...moving on.
Still with me? Hey! Wake up! We're almost done, I swear.

Everything else.
Here are all the other things that are not or may not be worthy of mentioning for one reason or another. I'll try to keep these in a few sentences or less.

The community isn't very large, as the game has been around for a long time and other games have surfaced. Most of the time you'll get complaints of people going AFK all the time, or higher lvl people treating weaker players with less respect, but that's every MMO at this point. Let's be honest. It doesn't always happen either. A good amount of the community is actually pretty cool for the most part, but keep in mind, you don't need people to play the game. It's only recommended, and there are few instances where teamwork is necessary, especially if you already know what you're doing.

The game almost always has an in game event going on, but they're all usually uneventful. Ironic eh? They're usually simple, easy, or uninteresting due to one of several factors. The events that get the most attention generally involve some fancy or amazing skill, action, item, etc that everyone wants to claim, or sell for the profit.

In Summary
Mabinogi has captivated me. It showed me what I wanted in this genre of video game, and even though it's far from perfect, I love it to death. I wouldn't recommend playing it though...it hasn't aged well unfortunately...

This is my first time using mabinogi with steam but i have been a player on mabi since the CB back in 2008. It's progress was ruff and as a result the community declined. However, the spirit of mabinogi is still present in the people that play so find friends and a resolve wont be an issue. I would recommend this game to anyone that has a passion for fantasy life and the adventures that come with it. Log on, choose your weapon and fight for Erinn!

Unique MMO, P2W, and small communities. Would recommend to someone who has a group of friends to play with or someone willing to meet people in-game.

Unique - imo has the best combat system out of any MMO i've tried.
- FASHION
P2W - You can buy items using nx (Karma Koin), these items include Gachapons (chance at rare items, gambling), and character mounts.

Communities - There's a low amount of people on each channel so you'll be seeing the same people/groups often.

I have been playing this game, on and off Steam, for almost a decade. I go through phases on the game where I may just log on for socializing and fashion or for the music skills and such; yet sometimes I am a hardcore dungeon crawler. (Shadow Missions are more fun in my opinion, just saying.) The devs put on great events with good timing between. The summer events are always the best, of course. It can seem like a free2play/pay2win type game when first starting out. And yes, there are many helpful items, as well as frivolous ones, that can be purchased with real-life money; however, as I discovered myself, it is not necessary if the player is dedicated and patient. The devs give plenty of opportunities to gain great items in game as well. I could continue listing lots of positives, but I need to get back to my chores. So...

As for the negatives: Really only two things that I am constantly annoyed with enough to mention them. One is the fact that, being an mmorpg, I must find a way to (virtually) co-exist with players from lands near and far. Which means dealing with a wide variety of personalities, morals, and norms. (Kinda like middle school or high school). As far as game play is concerned, I am constantly grumbling about awkward camera angles in some areas of the maps. But that is not a dealbreaker in any way. :D

I have over 2000 hours on to this game without steam.

This is a great game but the way to make it really fun is to have a set of goals.

Join a guild, make lots of friends to make your adventure a lot more exciting.

There is no level cap.

Mabinogi is a game based off of the Celtic myths called Mabinogions. I don't know much about celtic mythology, but the game's icon is based off the celtic knot. The game is made by Koreans who are well-versed in the art of coding crack cocaine into video game form. You look like an anime character from the PS2 era, doing mundane tasks to rank up how well you can sheer a sheep, or mix strawberry milk.

Onto the gameplay,
This game has no excuse to run at 15 fps at some places, being from the 2000s. If you can get past the horrible engine this game forces you to play on, you're in for some not very exciting gameplay. The game is based off of a rock-paper-scissor type combat (at least for the basic combat skills, this starts to matter less once you get more specialized skills) which would work well if the game didn't lag to ♥♥♥♥ing oblivion.

I forgot to mention the lag. Depending on the day you play, time of day, position of the sun and moon, and if your oven's clock is synced to your microwave's clock, the game can lag terribly to unplayable.

After 6 days (everyday if you are under a total level of 1000), you can rebirth and reset to level 1, but keep the progress you have made on any skills you were ranking up. This is a core aspect of the game. Optionally, you can use rebirth potions that you can buy with real life money (NX) to rebirth anytime. Eventually, you'll be level 80 after one day and have a whole 5 days to wait, wondering what the hell to do now. The game tries to keep you playing everyday with events, and opportunities to give you more ability points (what you use to rank up skills, these run out very fast).

The community is absolutely awful, since it mainly attracts weeaboos, middle schoolers, weeaboo middle schoolers, edgy middle schoolers, edgy high schoolers, people from Gaia online, and actual adults who spend way too much money on a Japanese anime life simulator. All of the above will try to prove how much better than you they are by using the classic "my damage is higher than yours" reason. Although this doesn't really change the fact that you are both playing a Chinese timesink.

One thing I do like about this game is it's NPC art. Not the graphics themselves, but the little portraits that appear when you talk to NPCs. Also there's cute waifus which is VERY nice. The music is ok, some pieces are actually pretty good. But one of the things that attracted me to this game originally was the fact that there are musical instruments in the game, and you can compose songs using MML (Music Macro Language). Eventually, everyone just ends up playing Naruto openings, Bleach openings, Mario, Pirates of the Caribbean, Zelda, Skyrim, Carameldansen, Power Rangers, and other songs you've heard to death.

The skill ranking system goes from rank F - A, then from 9 - 1. Getting some skills to from rank F to rank 1 can take either a day, or a few months. You spend AP, or ability points, to rank up these skills. Some skills will take about 60 AP to get from rank 2 to rank 1, and that's not including all the other ranks before that. The main reason for rebirths is to get more AP for your skills, which to why you keep coming back to this Taiwanese basketweaving tutorial.

The quests are ok, I guess.

This game is ok, I guess. Play it if you have a few hundred-thousand hours to waste. It's easier with friends.

Mabinogi and how I feel about it
After Spending around 900 hours in this game, I do believe it's time I make a review for Mabinogi.

In short, mabinogi is a Open World, Fantasy Life MMO, You're free to do literally anything you want too, you can run around and explore dungeons or you can take up smithing and make weaponry, or you could take up tailoring or carpentry instead, you can even play music to help buff your team mates in what they're doing.

Honestly, I've put a lot of time into Mabinogi because I fell in love with it's charm and how it plays, it's not super fancy, it doesn't have the top notch graphics that most MMOs have nowadays but it has so much more to offer outside of it's looks that it just blows other MMOs out of the water.

With that said, there are quite a few Cons for Mabinogi too, forinstance the lack of support for people who are on newer system and the extreme amount of stuff to wrap your head around, it's very overwhelming, it's not really as popular as a lot of other MMOs either, which to me is honestly a good thing because that means most people on there are just as deticated on there as you and are usually willing to help a friend out, it's also just not built as well as most other games either.

But overall, I'd recomend this game to anyone who is looking for a fun time in a vast open world~
and if you need someone to help you out, gimme a call :P

Mabinogi was great between g1~12, after that it all went downhill with "revamped" combat, reforges, special upgrades, and free stats from talents.
At this point its just a messanger program or a style simulator.
Forgot to mention its a pay to win game now.

This game is a gem from the past, It is outdated but still shows much improvement. The leveling is nearly infinite and allows you to play how ever you want with no class restriction. If you can work the economy you can get to end game without spending a dime. I would recomend trying to get to level 200 before you give up on the game entirely, it would take you a week at least to accomplish.

Its not about game play, its not about game mechanics, its not about graphics, but ill tell you one thing, this game has an astounding community where you'll meet friends you know for years to come, a community where when you need help on something multiple people will show up to aid, a community where you make more than just friends, you make a family! That is the reason that i play this game, friends and a community that you know you can rely on.

I definitly enjoy this game. Especially considering it's free. It's not heavily pay to win, but if you do choose to spend money it will likely be on pets. I have yet to do so, but I'm sure at some point there will be something I desire. The community isn't too bad, most just keep to themselves other than for dungeons or selling items. Only a handful of terrifying Weeaboos have cursed me out, but that's with any game.

If someone tells you "It's made my nexon, it's bad" take it with a grain of salt, Dev Cat has held a stead grip on making it fair while still making money.

Also, buy an instrument, make a custom scroll with random notes on mml, and go to channel 2 Belvast. You'll be everyone's friend. The higher pitched the better. Flutes work well.
