As I was looking ways to learn guitar because I bought a Les Paul recently made me look into Rocksmith, a blend of a learning software and a game that in a sort of way reminds of a Rockband or Guitar Hero but complex and versatile at the time.
I plugged my guitar as I started the game, and it said to me after reaching the main screen I needed a Real Tone Cable as it specified in the store page. It wasn't a problem, as you CAN USE OTHER SOFTWARE to emulate the Real Tone effect so the game can recognise your guitar and then, let you play the game. You have to search the software in the internet and it makes you play outside Steam (that's why I have 5 min played, but I have played several hours) and if you want to be inside Steam while playing, you have to add the shortcut to your Library. Without the Real Tone Cable there is NO WAY to play inside Steam.
I still recommend buying the Real Tone Cable if you have the money to, because the other software can sometimes crash in a middle of a song or event and that ruins the experience of it. If you get the latest patch of the software, it will crash once in a while.

Talking about the music, the game offers a big catalog of songs (including a lot of genres like metal, classic rock, rock, alternative, etc) that grow smaller as you learn them all (but that will take quite a while though!) and a really extense one of DLC that is, in my opinion, somewhat better than the original because you buy the songs depending on your taste of music. I often buy my DLC during a sale since each song cost 1.49$ then and you can buy a lot more.

The gameplay is fantastic. The different modes that a song has include Practice,Perform,Riff Repeater and Techniques Used (and the great Master Mode unlocked after 100.000 points achieved in a song) The most valuable for me was the Riff Repeater, as you have 3 other options inside of it called Free Speed, Leveler and Accelerator (You can also manipulate the speed and level of the section) Those 3 help you to practice different sections of a song without trouble letting you do a first test to know your current level of playing the section, and then giving you 30 attempt to play the section at perfection. Losing lives after lives make you really try to play the section correctly!

At the end, play Rocksmith and you will have a great time as you learn the instrument you love with tons of hours of gameplay. Highly recommended for pros or starters.

2014 is much better, but it is worth it to get this just for the songs.

Rocksmith is a great learning tool for guitar.

Some users have complained about the menus.. It uses the space bar, the arrow keys the escape button and the enter key. Once you understand it, zero problem.

In Rocksmith the game guides your learning by throwing you in the deep end. you start by playing along with songs. But the game makes this possible by checking your level and by keeping within your skill level. To improve your skills and add a little variety on the way, there are some arcade games to try. This will help with skill training for things like learning scales. I personally hate them as the note recognition is dubious and they tend to be impossible time wasters.

Rocksmith keeps guitar learning fresh and interesting by offering a whole lot of 'levels' 'unlocks; and 'upgrades' to aim for. There are riffs, technical skills and challenges to master, and of course songs to play and memorise. It is a FANTASTIC tool for creating a context and a motivation for playing guitar.

As you improve in levels you can unlock new guitars and hardware items that improve the sounds you can make, they also serve as a beginner course in teaching about amplification, pedals, and the various peripherals required to create the sounds we hear in so many great songs. This offers some handy research before new players invest in expensive hardware.

The playlist for the game is large, and very fun to play. There are a range of styles covered from classic rock-n-roll greats to many Indie musicians. Getting a feel for this music is a highlight of the experience.

DLC is expensive, but after investing time in the core playlist it becomes reasonable to pay a bit more cos each new DLC offers plenty of fun.

It is no lie to say this is the fastest way to play guitar. After about 5 days of dedicated effort I was thrashing (crudely) through mid-difficulty songs with around 70-80% accuracy and having LOTS of fun doing so. I got in some all day sessions and after 12 hours of nonstop play fingers were aching but there was a big smile on my face. If you love music and think you want to play guitar go to the ATM and withdraw $500 immediately to buy the best guitar in that price range you can get, a retail version of this game and the cable. Push yourself to 'Get the achievements' or whatever other motive you can find and you will NOT regret it.

This is Undoubtaby the BEST game I ever played, cos at heart it's not a game. It's a life changing, life-enriching education tool. And it's proof of how LUCKY we are to be living in the age of advanced computer-entertainment.

You learn to play Bass/Guitar and usually have fun doing it! I have only played the Bass section of it so far and have learned quite a bit (I knew next-to-nothing before). I have to take a break from the game every week or so due to what it does to my fingers so thay can rest. Its quite fun and challenging learning diffrent techniques.
I highly reccomend it, as it is cheeper than most tutors.
