Probably one of the best games in the survival / horror genres. While it isn't very scary (unless you are easily frightened by jumpscares or gore), the game has excellent atmosphere and is quite tense at some moments. The story may not be very original, but the setting and aethetics make up for that. This game (along with the sequel) has some of my favorite character and environmental design in any game. The enemies are surprising and unsettling, and there is a large variety of them. The Ishimura is a very well-designed environment, with plenty of claustrophobic areas for tension and wide-open areas for action.

I have few negative things to say about Dead Space. This may have just been me, but it felt overly long and drawn-out near the end, but that still just means that you're getting a good amount of playtime for your money.

Overall, this is a very game. I definitely reccommend getting the bundle with Dead Space 2, as that is an excellent game as well.

Brutal, action oriented survival horror. Think RE4 and after. Gory and satisfying gameplay, with very spooky environent and detailed, creepy SOUND (a largely underappreciated element of horror!). A nice bonus is that the graphics have aged nicely. Still worth a play in my opinion!

+ horror atmosphere
+ various enemy types
+ weapons & their upgrades
+ save & inventory systems
+ level design
+ epic boss fights
+ cool story

- bad optimization for visuals & controls
- jump scares stop being interesting after a while
- couple of graphical & AI glitches

First let me get the mundane stuff out of the way. Turn v-sync off, otherwise there are big mouse issues. Also tweak the settings a bit, maybe even an .ini file, to make the game handle as nicely as possible. It is a console port and not a very well optimized one. HOWEVER, once you go through this you can start to enjoy this awesome game. One of the most thrilling games I have played. After the fantastic beginning sequence of the game you start your horrible journey. You are a space engineer and after some stuff happens you are basically space...with a HUGE bunch of monsters that look like the cast of a body horror movie. And indeed gore, blood and decapitations are a strong part in this game. But the scary part is the anticipation, the fear of what awaits you behind the next corner. The sounds, the corpse-filled rooms, the blood trails. And the damn ventilation jump scares. Although honestly you get really used to these after a while. But there is still enough monster variety to keep it fresh. Also the story is nice, nothing super original, but enjoyable. I like the level design and I have to give praise to the boss battles which I liked a lot. The amosphere is excellent through most of the game. All of this made me play in shorter sessions because I could not handle the stress, but that is something you WANT from a horror game. Recommended!

P.S.- the low game time is because I played the game DRM-free before and I just wanted to try and see how it works on Steam

Great survival space horror with some genuinely tense moments.

Graphics: Because the truth esque 2008 are great.
Gameplay: Very comfortable to play, but third-person shooter is not always great.
Duration: You will spend it within 10 hours.

Dead space is the classical horror game that actually is still alive since its launch. Even nowadays I can easily fall into the spirit of dark and scary corridors of USG Ishimura and get my atmospheric gameplay and a lot of content for creation of my own way of struggle. I am very sure that even after some years, it will be very interesting for me to replay this game and relive its experience again.

I think it was a bad decision on my part to get this game, because not even ten minutes into it, I am already feeling sick.

Guess that says alot about it's atmosphere, eh?

May revisit it again when I've grown some bigger balls.

AMAZING survival horror, and probably the GORIEST survival horror. You must fight to survive on an abandoned ship called the ishimura, where you encounter creatures called necromorphs, a.k.a mutated humans. The atmosphere is AMAZING and it also has many stressful and eerie moments that you must play through. The controls are great and the gunplay is smooth as can be. my complaint is that it can be a bit boring if you aren't feeling the fear that the game exerts on you.

all around 9.5/10

I'm not new to Dead Space. I got this game back when it came out for PS3 and it since then become one of my most loved franchises to have ever existed. Everything about this game was so perfect and back in the days, never seen in a game before. It mixed sci-fi with horror in such a way that movies like Alien and Predator could only do. Being the early 80's child that I am, this brought many smiles of joy, as well as screams of terror.

I will not go much into detail, since most people who play this will be familiar with the game, wether they played it for Xbox or PS3. This game hasn't aged too well though. With so many masterpieces of the horror franchises out there, like Outlast and even the sci-fi brother Alien Isolation, Dead Space somehow does not feel too scary anymore. Not to say it's bad, but when you play Alien Isolation and then start Dead Space right after, you are not into it for the scares, but for the nostalgia.

Nevertheless, Dead Space is a masterful game. So original that not many (or any) games could copy or surpass it, unless of course, we look at Dead Space 2. But I'm leaving that for another review.

So moving on to the technical details:

-Playing this at 1080p on a GTX970 paired with an i5 6600k with 10% OC, running at 60fps with all settings maxed out. I can't say it looks great... It is 100x smoother than the PS3 version, yes, but that kind of hurts the game a bit since it makes the old and blurry textures stand out. The PS3 version was a lot darker, more grainy and the 30fps helped with the "cinematic" feel. Maybe it was my imagination. maybe back then this game looked great since there wasn't anything better.

One th epossitive: Light effects are a lot sharper though, and the holographic menu looks gorgeous!

-As wonderful and nerve-wrecking as I remember

-Now this is where the game suffers terribly. This game on a keyboard and mouse is a no-go. Playing it with an Xbox One controller does help, but the analogs are way too sensitive compared to the absolute perfection that the Dual Shock 3 analogs were. I don't remember this game being this clunky (maybe it was), but now it is very bad. It will need some getting used to, but it will certainly won't stop me from enjoying.

-Very engaging, original, great character that you'll learn to love. It's like a good sci-fi B movie. It also takes some inspiration from the Alien franchise.

-The sci-fi lore here is very good. I am an amature sci-fi novelist and it is absolute bliss to play this game for all those little science details. Even if some strech reality a bit, without getting too far from what it is possible.

Replay value:

-Not much to see here really. THis is a game you play once in a while.

Port quality:

-WARNING READ THIS: A lot of people complain of crashing, lag and glitchy v-sync. Be aware that this game does not play well on all systems. However there are a lot more people like me that are having absolutely NO problems with this game even maxed out. still, if you go for it and do experience problems, there are tons of threads here in the Steam community of fixes and setting combos that will certainly make the experience much more enjoyable.

10/10 One of those great games that will forever be remembered in the gaming industry. Godly sequel, and even if the end of the trilogy wasn't too great (game-wise), it gave a spectacular finale to the hero that Isaac Clarke is.

Hi, this is my first review on Steam and I'll keep it short. The main problem you might experience with the game is the bad port and the graphics issue. I have Windows 10 & Nvidia GeForce GTX 960 and it works fine after following the instructions of this short and simple video (it is not my channel, but it really helped me solve the problem quickly and easily):

If you are still experincing any issues, these links might be of help to you (but I didn't need them so far):

Hope this helps people enjoy the game. It is a very good game and I recommend it. REALLY scarry. :)
