Old game carries its age well.
Hard to find fault with this minion controller. Fun, easy to learn and good length.

The premise of this game was rather inriguing. Control little minions to do your biding, ala pikmin style. Except you're evil. Really evil. There is even a mechanic where if you go out of your way to do evil things, such as kill peasants, you receive a certain percentage of corruption. This corruption ultimately determines a 100% chaotic ending, or a good ending. However, you can also do good deeds which will cause you to become a, shall we say, less evil overlord. As charming as this all was, many things brought down my experience with this game.

1. The combat. Oh dear, the combat. It feels quite clunky. I know that the minions are supposed to fight for you, however, I would at times like to do some fighting of my own. Controlling them can be a pain at times. Sometimes they just won't move, or they won't all attack one thing.

2. Graphics: Being a seven-year-old game, it will of course not look as gorgeous as modern games. The art style is charming and fits a fantasy world such as this. I find certain character models to be humorous, especially the halfings.

3. Level-design: This aspect of the game really affected my enjoyment. Areas were quite large, thus requiring much backtracking. One of my main gripes in any game is excessive backtracking. About halfway through, I was in a forest. Without giving away any major spoilers, the task at hand was to take down some roots connected to a pequliar tree. Halfway through this ordeal, I had to go to an entrely new area to gain new minions just so I could progress in the precious afformentioned area. While it is nice to be introduced to new areas, having to move onto a new one abrubly was jarring.

4. Controls: Controlling the minions wasn't so bad at first, until I was controlling a large swarm of them. The clunkyness of the controls becomes evident later on as you gain access to more minions. You are however able to split them up into groups, but I still had issues when I would have 30-40 of each, all trying to collect something or kill something.

5. Characters & Story: I wish the overlord could speak. It would make for some interesting situations. Most of the characters are forgettable, annoying, or just plain cheesy. There is a story that progresses in each area. Each area has its own small story which was intriguing.

6. Bugs: This is what truly broke my experience with the game. At times there would be graphical glitches. Parts of the ground would't render properly as well as walls. Random crashes aplenty. Random slowdowns on a high-end computer. And then came a game breaking bug. The infamous elevator bug as well as a bug where my minions would not move whilst carrying something, not matter what I did. I was unable to complete the sidequest. As for the elevator bug, you must find two levels around the area to complete a level in order to raise an elevator. I did so, and the elevator rose. However, when I attempted to get on it, it would not go to the next area. I went back to the tower, exited the game, and went back. Still did not work. A shame. I was still enjoying this game overall.

In the end, it is full of game breaking bugs and many issues. I wish I could have finished it. I unfortunately cannot recommend this game.

I played Overlord back when it first came out, and remembered enjoying it quite a bit. I was excited to see it on sale here on Steam with its addon and sequel, so I picked them up dirt cheap.

The game is pretty fun, with the story being staged with you in the role of the villain out to subjugate any and all you come in contact with. You get the option to choose between good and evil, but it's more accurately evil and really, really evil. The game play is fun, though a bit frustrating when you can't quite find how to get to the next area. I realized how much I've come to rely on the objective markers in newer games (Skyrim and such), when I had to actually think about where to go. Once you get all four minion types, the game really starts to move, because more paths to success are open to you.

The primary negative to the game, I feel, is the minion control when using the keyboard and mouse. Controlling minions is often clunky, especially if you are standing just a bit too close to something you want them to interact with. It is exceedingly difficult to control the minions when they have to lure enemies to certain places or take timed explosives to certain points before they detonate (both happen a lot late in the game). It was really hard to move around while directing a minion, which made a couple of challenges lose their entertainment value quickly.

Besides those few specific examples, however, I found the game to quite fun all these years after my first playthrough. The graphics are dated, and the story is very shallow, but it was worth the couple of bucks I spent on it. Just remember you are playing an older game when you start!

After finding and summoning 15 red minions I came across a field busting with sheep and farmers.
I spent the next 10 minutes sitting back on my chair inside my dark room with a small, content smile on my face, listening to the screams of man and animal alike as I burned them alive.

This game has the same idea as pikman, but the controls are just too unusual for me and I couldn't get into it.

I played the first two hours of this and it was simply way too easy, no challenge at all. Therefore it lost all fun. Maybe the game just progresses too slowly, but that itself would be a problem as well.

You play as an all powerful lord of chaos and evil. Except for instead of chaos and evil, you're forced to do good deeds for unless you want to get awful rewards and make the game a bigger pain in the ♥♥♥ than it already is (which makes the entire premise of the game a lie), and instead of being all powerful, you die in about 3 hits unless you have your annoying goblin minions do everything for you by controlling them in an RTS fashion.

This isn't an RTS, it's a 3rd person game, where the camera is behind your character (who moves like he desperately needs to find a toilet), and in 3rd person games, manually tracing a path for NPCs doesn't work. Neither does setting them up in strategic spots. Neither does selecting between multiple units.

You want a game where you play as an all powerful evil dude? Go track down a copy of Destroy All Humans. You want an RTS game where you can control evil factions? Go get one of the Dawn of War games. But don't buy this piece of ♥♥♥♥.

I find I'm mixed on this game. At first it was a great new game mechanic with some good humor. The story was pretty much non existant but that was ok the game play was fresh and new. Then I hit a point where I was burning through minions faster than I could generate them and to keep making progress I was going to have to start doing a lot of grinding type work to increase my hoards and try again. At that point I was done.

This is a very charming adventure game in the vein of “Pikmin” that experiments with some of the classic tropes and clichés of the fantasy genre. Although controlling the minions can be frustrating at times and the player character moves like molasses, it isn’t enough to ruin the fun.

Nevermind the gameplay, its ok. You can see it was made for other consoles so on pc it is well ok. But the humor and storyline are so funny and original that everyone should simply play it. Specialy those guys who play only good characters in rpgs... Its funny, catchy and you will love it from the start to the end.

I would never have bought this game if I hadn't tried the PS3 demo first and i've loved it ever since then, now I get to play it on my laptop whenever and wherever I travel, i'm in heaven! The ability to play as the bad guy is always a plus and the minion humour gets me every time("What, no sheepies?!"). A lot of reviews have this as a 6 or 7 out of 10, but if you love something as I do this game, you will overlook all its minor flaws! This game is honestly one of my favorite games of all time and gets a definite recommend!
Download the demo, you may love it, you may hate it, but give it a go!

Overlord is by far one of my favorite games! My favorite part about it is the minions and you get to control them and do what ever the heck you wanna do! You can choose to help the towns people and get a prize or kill them and get more money and do the mission and get even more coins!! You can do so much more than what I have already said like there are wayyyy to many things to name things about how awesome this game is! This is 2nd on my fav video games, tf2 is still #1!
