“The developers are planning to continue expanding the game in the future, but why wait? It's already great now…”
9/10 – Atomic Gamer
“But suffice to say Space Pirates and Zombies isn't just a grand open-world space action RPG in the tradition of Star Control. It's also a rare expression of zombies that belongs alongside Dead Rising and Atom Zombie Smasher.”
A – Gameshark
“It’s a very solid game that is obviously made out of passion and is a great example of the indie renaissance we’ve been experiencing lately. In my opinion, it’s one of the best things that $15 can buy.”
90/100 – RTS Guru

About This Game

At its core, Space Pirates and Zombies is an action based, skill oriented, top down space combat game. It’s similar to the ones we knew and loved in years past, but now using full physics simulation and modern graphics for those oh so pretty explosions. But as you dig deeper, SPAZ becomes much more.
Instead of flying a single ship, you are in charge of an ever growing and evolving fleet, unlocking the rich tactical elements of SPAZ, all accessed at the touch of a button. Issue orders, change ships, apply fleet AI settings, all on the fly. At any moment the battle can change, and the Tactics Panel gives you the tools to make the battle turn in your favor.
As a layer on top of the action and tactics, we have a detailed technology and levelup system akin to what you would expect from an RPG. Learn to build new ships by destroying your enemies. Explore the galaxy to find components, use your hard earned research points to unlock their potential, and then customize every aspect of your new fleet.
Finally, there is the universe in which all this strife and adventure takes place. SPAZ features a persistent randomly generated Galaxy populated with story elements, factions, enemies, missions, items, to provide you with a unique experience each time you play. While you are struggling to survive, uncover the secret of an ever expanding Zombie infestation that spreads by establishing its own real time multi-tiered ecosystem.

Key features:

  • 33 ships to research, build, outfit and pilot.
  • 70 unique components to discover and customize your fleet’s performance.
  • Totally physics based combat system.
  • Fight Zombie infestations, battling a full zombie ecosystem comprising four stages of un-life.
  • Explore a persistent randomly generated galaxy containing hundreds of star systems.
  • Freedom to explore the galaxy and take on challenges at your own pace.
  • Aid, flee, or exploit the warring factions in each star system.
  • The unique event system lets the player change the balance of power in any star system
  • Carefully spend your hard earned research points on hundreds of upgrades across 15 categories.

+RPG levelling
+Wide-variety of ship types
+Physics-based movement for both ships and projectiles/missles
+Easy-to-learn resource management
+Dark humored

-Grind intensive (if under utilizing the civvy station types)
-Sub-Par AI teammates
-Low variety of equipment types
-Low variety of levelling skills (that is, no branching)

Listen, this game is fun as hell. Despite my minuses up there, there is still some variety and strategy to be had. It starts off fast and still really picks up. Even though there's a low variety of equipment, it still feels like there's always another ship to unlock or skill to level up.

The best way to increase the life of this game is the mods. Fight for Universe is easily the star, but Big Fight for Beef is also very good.

Even though SPAZ 2 is out, this is still definitely a buy.

This is such an amazingly well built game. It invents a whole new genre by blending classic RPG, top down shooter, and space sim perfectly. Definitely thumbs up for this one.

Love this game. I have a saved game from 2012. I am where I was now and am hoping to beat the game soon. Wish Spaz2 was cheaper :(

Bought this game before it was on steam, developer was nice to provide a steam key afterwards.

Played it for hundreds of hours, and then hundreds more when developer added mod support.

Heavily recommended to anyone who likes space, shooters, ship customization or Space Rangers.

Very well made, funny and engaging storyline.

I can't say the game has great replayability - though I do like to replay it once every few years.

Sequel is out now, and while it's very different, it's just as enjoyable and if you like this I recommend it as well.

Great game, wish it was multiplayer. Picked this up in Humble Bundle (bought the bundle just for this) and was extremely pleased.

It's 2D top down. Zombies, pirates, and upgradeable space ships. Pretty neat concep and story line. Love the developers.

This game isn't for everyone, but there is no reason to hate on it. It's not the longest game ever, it does get repetitive in the end game.

I wish they had a version for Android. This game can run on really low spec systems and reminds me a lot of the first stages of Spore. It's a great simple game to have on the go that you can casually play and log off at a moments notice.

Top down spaceship grind. Mechanics are interesting. Be sure to keep an extra save. Can provide a good power trip or challenge depending on your progression.

I didn't intend to buy this game, but it came as part of a Humble Bundle. However, after playing it I am definitely going to purchase SPAZ2 (even though it's not a direct sequel). This game is a really good example of its genre, even if I don't know what the genre is. It feels like part of a 4x game, but with more story.

This game really should have been called Galactic Renegade Interlopers, Nefarious Desperados, Interstellar Nasty Ghouls, as grinding is all you do. You go to a system, see how much the local two factions feel about you, see what you can buy from the faction that likes you, chill out by a friendly mining station to get resources, see what missions you can do that don't ♥♥♥♥ off the faction that doesn't like you, go bribe the other faction so you can buy their stuff, find some way of getting more crew to replace the ones you lost bribing your new friends, and then when the system is done, either bribe some more to unlock the warp gates, or shoot your friends in the back. Story missions are massive spikes in difficulty requiring a lot of leveling from you. They didn't make a massive randomly generated galaxy for the fun of it, as you will be wandering around picking fights and strip-mining it to get the xp and tech needed. Just not for me as I don't have the time.
