Medusa Frontier - RenderGoblin

At the time of this post, Medusa Frontier has been in Early Access development for 3.3 years and despite a very novice Early Access Launch, there has been slow and sure progress in the rendering engine or "technical" quality of the game. Although the code being used to develop Medusa Frontier is raw in many ways, the game experience and is not bound to a particular look and feel or third party engine license or code philosophy.

As a solo developer that also enjoys budget friendly games, I believe current industry trends and solutions have created an environment where gamers and developers are hungry for immersive gameplay and basic rendering quality that "simple rendering engines" can provide for budget gamers using "average" or "budget" gaming systems. Although I truly enjoy many aspects of graphics programming and refining rendering performance, three years in Early Access has been far too long for supporters to wait for improved game play, so it is time to shift focus to game mechanics and game visuals.

As of update 0.3.7.0 development will now focus on building the game world, and establishing more in game visuals and game mechanics. A few sidelines for technical issues or rendering features are expected, but most development will shift focus to creating a better game world and game mechanics that offer more entertainment than the current build that feels almost like a developer sample, technical demo or proof of concept.

This small but important update includes the following changes:
  • We have slightly adjusted the chair’s stability, so it should tip over much less often now. However, you still need to be careful when going down staircases — it’s not a walk in the park!
  • Additionally, we have added an option in the settings to reduce camera shake. The effect of this option is subtle but makes things a bit easier.
The game features two types of camera shake, so to speak. The first is the shake caused by the character’s animations — the camera is attached to the character’s head and moves synchronously with it. This effect is difficult to remove as it happens naturally.
The second is an additional fake camera shake that activates when pressing the WASD keys. Thanks to the new option, this shake can now be disabled.
