Total War: WARHAMMER II

Hello! Welcome back to our regular feature where we write a little bit about some of the games we've found ourselves playing over the last few days. This time: more coat hangers, a classic RPG with a twist, and a grim future war.

Also! Please meet Paolo Balmes, who joins the moderation team. We asked him to tell us a bit about himself.

"Hi everyone, my name is Paolo Balmes but you can call me Paolo or Pao. I love sports, from basketball, football, AMERICAN Football as well as the UFC and pro-wrestling.

Games Workshop kicked off its Warhammer Skulls event with a raft of video game announcements alongside new trailers and images. Strap yourself in, there's a lot of Warhammer stuff in here.

First up is the reveal of Total War: Warhammer 2's final DLC, which reworks the poor old Beastmen.

Creative Assembly didn't stop there. The UK developer announced Skarbrand as a Legendary Lord for Khorne in the upcoming Total War: Warhammer 3.

Total War: Warhammer 2 is getting a new character voiced by Iwan Rheon, the actor who played Ramsay Bolton in HBO's Game of Thrones.

In a video tease, below, for the strategy game's next free Legendary Lord - the Dark Elf beastmaster Rakarth of Karond Kar - we hear Rheon's voice acting. He's doing a great Ramsay Bolton impression! And I love the "flay them alive" line. Ramsay was always fond of flaying victims alive, after all.

It's a great fit, really. The Dark Elves are one of the most sadistic races in Warhammer, and Bolton is one of the most sadistic characters in Game of Thrones.

Total War: Warhammer 2's latest trailer is perhaps my favourite yet.

Creative Assembly has created fantastic cinematic in-engine trailers for its wonderful fantasy strategy game for some time, but the trailer for upcoming DLC The Warden & the Paunch somehow raises the game.

Evoking a battle from The Lord of the Rings movie, the trailer shows an army of Mad Max-style goblin chariots bearing down on an army of elves, who clash in dramatic fashion. And then the golems sprout from the ground, and then a burning phoenix smashes into the ground, and then mages fire magic bolts into the masses, and then the two faction leaders, Eltharion the Warden of Tor Yvresse, and Grom the Paunch prepare to face-off. Basically, I can't wait to watch the series finale of HBO's latest.

Elite Dangerous

We all know about Creative Assembly's wonderful Total War: Warhammer strategy games. Now, Frontier Developments has quietly announced it's making a Warhammer Age of Sigmar real-time strategy game.

Buried within the investor relations portion of its website is a note that the Cambridge-based maker of Elite: Dangerous, Planet Coaster, Planet Zoo and Jurassic World Evolution has signed an intellectual property licence with Games Workshop to develop and publish an RTS for PC, consoles and streaming platforms for release in the financial year 2023 (the year ending 31st May 2023). This game is based on the popular fantasy tabletop Warhammer, specifically the popular Age of Sigmar era.

The Age of Sigmar tabletop game first released in 2015, and is the successor to the discontinued game Warhammer. Frontier's game will be the first RTS set in the Age of Sigmar. Creative Assembly's Total War: Warhammer games are based on the "Old World", which is now replaced by the Age of Sigmar.

Total War: Warhammer 2 (which, according to this press release is still not called Total Warhammer 2) is set for a campaign pack that adds two big names from the Warhammer fantasy.

The Shadow and The Blade, due out on 12th December for Creative Assembly's wonderful strategy game priced 6.99 / $8.99 / €8.99, adds two playable factions in both the Eye of The Vortex and Mortal Empire campaigns: Clan Eshin (Skaven) and Hag Graef (Dark Elves). With them come two big names in the lore as legendary lords: Deathmaster Snikch and Malus Darkblade.

For the uninitiated, Deathmaster Snikch is the head of Clan Eshin, who are basically the assassin/ninja clan in the Warhammer lore. He's got his own model in the tabletop and while he's not one of the biggest names, he's got a cult following.

Warhammer: End Times - Vermintide

Games Workshop has announced Warhammer The Old World, an upcoming return to the Fantasy Battle-era of the tabletop game.

We only occasionally dabble in tabletop gaming news here on Eurogamer (if you're after an expert view of the scene - and a lot of fun to boot - check out our friends over at Dicebreaker). But I can't help but view this piece of news through a video game lens.

For the uninitiated, back in 2015, Games Workshop destroyed Warhammer's much-loved Old World and replaced the Warhammer: The Game of Fantasy Battles tabletop with the Age of Sigmar. This was a resounding success in tabletop land, and Warhammer hasn't looked back since.

Brian Blessed is Gotrek Gurnisson in Total War: Warhammer 2 - and as you'd expect, the booming British bearded Thespian holds nothing back.

82-year-old national treasure Blessed, famous for his roles in the likes of I, Claudius, Blackadder and Flash Gordon, was recruited by Creative Assembly to do his thing for Gotrek, the legendary Dward Slayer from the Warhammer tabletop game and soon-to-be-released DLC for the video game.

In the video, below, Blessed is in typically rambunctious form, belting out his lines while dishing out life philosophy ("I am 50 per cent actor, and 50 per cent adventurer!")

Total War: WARHAMMER II

Do you want to be the ghost ship materialising out of the fog with a load of gruesome, rotting zombies on board? What a stupid question. Yes, obviously.

That's what's coming in Curse of the Vampire Coast, a new mini-expansion for Total War: Warhammer 2. It's due 8th November, not quite in time for Halloween, and costs 14 (it's discounted to 12.59 currently).

The win condition for the new campaign, and for the four new Legendary Lords, is to grow infamy and become the most dreaded pirate captain on the sea. You do this by winning battles and establishing Pirate Coves, a new thing. They let you - instead of taking, sacking or razing ports - build a sneaky sub-settlement nearby, which siphons off income plus any other benefits you've unlocked upgrading your Cove.
