Terraria - Loki ISP

Greetings Terrarians!

October is quite possibly our favorite month here on the Terraria team. We are big fans of the turn towards the Fall alongside all of the spooky happenings that come along with Halloween. Speaking of which, if you have any amazing Terraria-themed pumpkins, costumes, or anything similar that you put together for Halloween this year, we would love to see them - and maybe feature them in the community section next month! On the development side, the team is pushing hard towards the end of the year, checking off items on the team's collective list at a blistering pace. More on that later, but for now, let's see what treats the Terraria team has waiting for our amazing community this year!

All that said, let's see what's going on in the world of Terraria...

PC - RE-LOGIC

TERRARIA - LIFE FRUIT HAS GOT WHAT ADVENTURERS CRAVE

The team has been making some amazing progress on the "lists" we mentioned in September's State of the Game. There is still quite a bit to get done (and test and fix, etc), but we remain committed to never cutting any corners. Ultimately, updates will take the time they need to be done right - that mantra of "it's ready when it's ready" has served us, the game, and the community right for 13 years and counting after all! As for what that means for timing and whatnot, we cannot really say just yet. That said, we will be sure to keep everyone informed here in the SOTG as well as elsewhere when the time is right. Thank you for your patience and your support!

Speaking of your support, we are thrilled to reveal that Terraria has finally eclipsed the 60 million units milestone (60.7m to be precise) - with 33m on PC alone! Simply put, we could not do what we do every day while maintaining the principles we hold so dearly without your support. Thank you doesn't do it justice - rest assured we aim to keep being worthy of that support.

Life Fruit has always been a valuable commodity in Terraria - but really loses its usefulness once the player has reached full health. The scientists in the Terraria food labs have taken some steps to fix this problem. Let's check in with our resident food expert to find out more...

Check out the Console/Mobile section for a sneak peak of Jungle Juice in action!

Oh, and in case you missed it, we had a sneaky little hidden spoiler posted on TCF during the TCF 10th Anniversary Festivities:

Avoid that nasty "one click too many" - and giving the Tinkerer even more of you hard-earned coins...

STEAM WORKSHOP NEWS - DEVELOPER'S CHOICE

Click the banner above to check out the Terraria Workshop!

Countless Terraria texture packs and worlds await you in the Terraria Steam Workshop! You are missing out if you haven't taken the time to check out these amazing creations from the community.

Speaking of amazing creations, we had one that caught our eye this month that we just had to add to the Terraria Workshop Developer's Choice List:

SLIME PLAYER

Ever wondered what it would be like if a slime had that main character energy... wonder no further!

WHAT ELSE IS GOING ON?

Working the list, preparing to discuss those "possible extra additions"...

TMODLOADER NEWS - TML TEAM

Hello everyone!

The tModLoader team and our amazing community of contributors continues to improve tModLoader. On November 1st the monthly update release of tModLoader will go live. Once again this month's release contains many improvements to the user experience, some gameplay bug fixes, as well as new features with examples and documentation for mod makers.

We'd like to remind modders about the preview branch where we test new features before they arrive in stable the following month. Modders interested in new these features, listed both on our GitHub and in the #preview-update-log of our Discord, can join the preview branch to get early access to the new features and test them in their mods. We really appreciate the feedback from modders using the preview branch to try out the new features.

One feature we are currently previewing is additional support for modded tiles that react to wind and player movement, as some vanilla tiles do. Modders on the preview branch can test it out and make sure it works correctly for chandeliers, banners, vines, and other similar tiles.

Modders and users should also keep an eye out for our monthly Steam announcement on the 1st where a complete listing of bug fixes and API changes for this month's release will be listed. The in-game news button on the main menu will direct you directly to the announcement once it is live.

As always, if you are having issues of any sort, definitely don't hesitate to check out our FAQ on github or reach out to us at our Discord.

TMODLOADER STEAM WORKSHOP

The TML Steam Workshop has over 6000 mods for you to enjoy! Coupled with the in-game mod browser, the TML Steam Workshop is a great way to explore what modded Terraria has to offer - check it out today by clicking the banner above!

WHAT'S NEXT FOR TML?

More features, continuing to evolve and grow what TML can do... and getting ready for 1.4.5.

As always, you can keep track the current progress and much more in real time at tModLoader/tModLoader (But note that the completion percentage doesn't mean anything, because issues and PRs don't have weights.)

Developers who are willing to contribute may do so by doing PRs to the tModLoader/tModLoader branch. (See tModLoader/tModLoader)

PlayStation, XBOX, Nintendo Switch, Mobile - DR STUDIOS

The Console/Mobile team has once again had a productive month. We have been adding the 1.4.5 update content in parallel with PC, further refining the control button changes we mentioned last time, and we put out a recent technical build on mobile that helps bring the backend up to speed with first party platforms - enabling future updates to go more smoothly. We stand ready to help make the next update as amazing as possible - we cannot wait for everyone to experience what it has to offer!

Jungle Juice has what you need when battling nefarious foes... or jumping into a hole that was deeper than you remember!

Until next time, Console & Mobile friends - thanks for all of your love and support!

TERRARIA - THE BOARD GAME UPDATE

Hello Terrarians! Chris here, lead developer at Paper Fort Games. October has been jam-packed with conventions, playtesting and game development. George has been hard at work on more fantastic art assets and we’re continuing to perfect the modular boss miniatures. We’ve got an Essen recap for you, as well as a spotlight on the Halloween promo pack unlocked during the campaign.

If you missed the campaign but would like to get your hands on the game, don’t worry! Late pledges are now available by clicking the link below...

TERRARIA: THE BOARD GAME CAMPAIGN LATE PLEDGES

---

Let’s jump in!

ESSEN SPIEL RECAP
At the start of October, we were showing Terraria: The Board Game at Essen Spiel, the world’s largest tabletop game convention. Over 200,000 attendees visited the show; thanks to everyone who stopped by our booth to chat about the game, to play a demo and to see the playmat in person! It was a wonderful chance to meet backers of the Kickstarter, fans of the game and also board gamers who had never heard of Terraria.

The Paper Fort Games booth team at Essen Spiel 2024!

Our demo table was full from open to close on all 4 days of the convention, and it was extremely rewarding to watch attendees explore the game. Here’s an excerpt from a review left by a player of the demo:

“…I played the demo at Essen this weekend- INCREDIBLY fun experience, even with 3 other strangers. The developer was clearly passionate about taking the spirit of Terraria and translating it into boardgame format … The best part of all, is no matter which choice you make you will still be progressing the game forward and generating value to the team … Many actions you make, including exploring can be highly rewarding. I don’t know if the path that my team took would have resulted in victory (honestly, I don't care) but subsequent games would force us to be a little more efficient with our actions to accomplish objectives and make progress toward a victory. Taking the first action was intimidating at first with all of the freedom of choice, but after you use the first or second action point it clicks…”

Thanks to @Yakos on BGG for uploading this picture of a game in progress at Essen!

If you live in the US, we’ll be at PAX Unplugged in December; we’ll be sharing more details in November’s SOTG so keep an eye out!

COMPONENT SPOTLIGHT: HALLOWEEN PROMO PACK

As this is our October update and Halloween is almost upon us, it seemed appropriate to show you some more of the Halloween Promo Pack, unlocked as a stretch goal during the Kickstarter campaign and included with every pledge!

Pumpkin Armor: Gourd-ness me; don’t you look fetching! Now we know that technically, this armor isn’t a Halloween item in the videogame, but it seemed right to put it in this pack! This set provides a tasty boost to your base defence, but also grants the ability to re-roll your lowest value attack die once per turn; perfect for having a second go at a pesky enemy.

Rotten Egg: What’s that smell? That’s right; it’s everyone’s favourite antisocial consumable! Discard this card to perform a free medium-range attack (or maybe that should be a free-range medium attack?), rolling 2 four-sided dice.

Bladed Glove: Is that you, Freddy? This short-range weapon is cheap and speedy; just a single action point to roll 3 four-sided dice. Terrarian trivia buffs might know that despite its appearance, the Bladed Glove is classified as a sword in the videogame and as such will occupy that slot on your character board.

These Halloween items will be available in your games via the Goodie Bag, an optional card that you can add to the base game chest cards.

---

NEW ART: EQUIPMENT AND HOUSES
George has recently been working his way through the game’s equipment; here are some of our favourite pieces!

From left to right: Gold Bow, War Axe of the Night, Blood Butcherer, Dark Lance, Slime Staff, Ice Blade and Tendon Bow

We’ve also been working with Re-Logic to perfect the game’s houses; you’ll build these (placing their tiles into your world) to unlock new crafting stations and powerup tokens throughout the game. We wanted the earliest houses to look basic and later ones to be more ornate, representing the way that players’ base building skills (and the items available to them) develop over the course of the game.

What’s your favourite detail in the houses? Let us know in the comments!

---

GAME DEVELOPMENT
Here are some of the game’s features we’ve been focusing on this month:
  • Simplification of debuffs; these are now represented by tokens rather than cards and have an inbuilt 2-turn cooldown system.
  • Adjustments to objectives to preserve early game momentum
  • Boss behaviour alterations
  • Further quality of life changes to the character boards, Bestiary/ crafting menu and minimap console.

Here’s a photo from a recent in-house playtest with Luke from fellow Nottingham-based design studio Iconiq Games (creators of the official Saw board game; very Halloween-appropriate!). A timely yoyo strike on a weakened King Slime, a mad dash to the ocean and a perfectly-placed pylon secured a victory!

I’ll be back next month with another designer diary. Remember; if you missed the campaign but would still like to get your hands on the game, late pledges are now available via the link below:

Terraria - Loki ISP

Greetings Terrarians!

Fall is almost here, and we can't wait. For several members of the team, this is their favorite time of the year - Halloween decorations are already starting to go up! Speaking of, we hope everyone is already coming up with ideas for cool Terraria pumpkin carvings, costumes, and art because we always love to see them. In the meantime, the teams remain hard at work on adding/tweaking/fixing content for Terraria 1.4.5. The finish line is starting to take shape, though we admittedly do have a couple of decent-sized ideas we want to discuss internally and decide if we should take those on before we can say for certain. How's that for vague? All that said, we are pretty excited for what is in Terraria 1.4.5 already, what we know is still to be added, and what may or may not be yet to come. Just a little while longer...

All that said, let's see what's going on in the world of Terraria...

PC - RE-LOGIC

TERRARIA - WHITTLING DOWN THE FINAL LISTS

As we mentioned in the opening of the State of the Game, the team has the final list in-hand - as well as a few possible additional things that we might include, which we will decide in the next couple of weeks - and is hard at work with getting all of that content together. Terraria 1.4.5 has turned into quite an update, far exceeding our initial intent to "just do the Dead Cells content". We know the update process has been longer than usual (or anyone expected), but the end is in sight and we hope that it will not be too much longer before we can get and give a sense for timing.

We had a few spoilers in mind for this month, but none of them really felt right and/or are things we may not want to spoil at all before the update drops. So, that being the case, no spoilers from the PC side this month, I'm afraid. Of course, it is always a good time to look back on the tons of spoilers given for this update thus far - even we were floored by what all has been shared so far!

Oh, and if you haven't checked out Core Keeper yet, you should - the team at Pugstorm are good people and they have created a pretty fun game!

TMODLOADER NEWS - TML TEAM

Hello everyone!

The tModLoader team and our amazing community of contributors continues to improve tModLoader. On October 1st the monthly update release of tModLoader will go live. Once again this month's release contains many improvements to the user experience, some gameplay bug fixes, as well as new features with examples and documentation for mod makers.

One major contribution we'd like to highlight this month is work by alueck that enables Max and Linux users to contribute directly to tModLoader. If you are a Mac or Linux user and have been wanting to contribute a new feature to tModLoader, it should now be possible and we are willing to help on Discord if you run into any roadblocks.

Developers who are willing to contribute may do so by doing PRs to the tModLoader/tModLoader branch. (See tModLoader/tModLoader)

PlayStation, XBOX, Nintendo Switch, Mobile - DR STUDIOS

Alongside keeping pace with the Re-Logic PC team in regards to adding all of the content and changes coming with Terraria 1.4.5, the DR Studios team has spent a considerable amount of time thinking of ways to evolve and improve the experience on console and mobile. One such area of focus has been around the issue of the screen feeling cluttered - especially on devices with smaller screens - due to the number of control buttons that are needed to enable a fully-operational control scheme for Terraria. We have brainstormed a lot of ways to tackle this issue, and we feel like we have landed on a pretty good new option for players - Radial Buttons!

These new radial buttons that let you combine up to 4 different actions into one button. Our main goal with them is to help cut down on clutter, as well as to better associate related actions in defaults (for example, combining potions + cursor options together in their own radial buttons). These support quick swipe gestures if you want to instantly use something, and are fully customizable by the player.

These will eventually be accompanied by a new default scheme, but there is a lot of discussion and iteration that needs to happen before we can show that to you.

We hope this will give players that find the screen to be a bit crowded on mobile a new way to play!

---

Until next time, Console & Mobile friends - thanks for all of your love and support!

TERRARIA MERCHANDISE UPDATES

TERRARIA - THE BOARD GAME UPDATE

Hello Terrarians! Chris here, lead developer at Paper Fort Games. The last month has flown by at Paper Fort Games HQ thanks to ongoing game development, playtesting, art production and convention preparation. In this month’s designer diary, I’ll be sharing development news, playmat and Developer Set art, videos of our latest Boss miniature prototypes and a look at how we’ve recently been using lasers as part of the design process.

If you missed the campaign but would like to get your hands on the game, don’t worry! Late pledges are now available by clicking the link below...

TERRARIA: THE BOARD GAME CAMPAIGN LATE PLEDGES

---

Let’s jump in!

PLAYMAT ART
In my last design diary, I shared George’s detailed black and white sketches of the Terrarian vs Wall of Flesh art piece that will be featured on the full-art side of the game’s playmat. He’s been hard at work bringing that scene to life and we’re very excited to reveal the full-colour art below!

Here’s the process from first sketch to final art:

We’ve also been updating the other side of the playmat; the one that helps you to set up the game. It features pre-printed starting biome tiles and spaces for NPCs, objectives and more. As you’ll be building your world on this side of the mat, we’ve opted to keep it relatively simple, so it doesn't detract from important gameplay information:

We can’t wait to see a physical version of this playmat; a sample is being produced right now and we're hoping to have it at our booth during Essen Spiel (more about that below), so swing by to see it if you’re there!

Want to get your hands on the playmat? You can get it as an add-on with any Terraria: The Board Game pledge!

---

BOSS MINIATURES

The latest prototypes of our boss miniatures recently arrived at the office; in the video below, you can see examples of the key system that allows boss parts to be removed/ swapped out during boss battles.

King Slime isn’t quite there yet; the transparent material looks pretty good but his key system needs further improvement. Also, the minis in this video are just spray painted; these won’t be their final colours as they will be cast in specific colour-matched plastics we have chosen for each boss.

The great thing about high-quality 3D printing is that we can try these models out, make changes and make sure they work before committing to making the final casting moulds.

---

GAME DEVELOPMENT (AND LASERS!)
Here are some of the game’s features we’ve been focusing on this month:
  • Addition of a ‘threat’ track to speed up the game, incentivise Boss engagement and pave the way for threat level-dependent behaviour/ events in future expansions.
  • Enhancements to the player board layout and shape.
  • Implementation of an enemy retaliation mechanism.
  • Addition of low-level consumables cards available to buy from the merchant NPC.
  • Simplification of NPC spawning criteria.
  • Improvement of the deluxe bestiary/ crafting menu layout for quicker, easier lookup.

Most of the changes above are mechanism-based, but some (like changes to the player board and the bestiary/ crafting menu) are physical. Previously we relied on manufacturers sending updated punchboard components, but Chris has recently been learning how to use an industrial laser cutter to make our own prototype punchboard components. No more cutting things out by hand or waiting for updated components to be shipped to us; we can now make a change, try it out and adjust as necessary within a very short timeframe. It’s a game-changer!

---

Playmat Sketches
One of the add-ons available with Terraria: The Board Game is the giant world playmat. One side features the game’s UI and provides a surface on which to build your world. The other will feature a full-art Terrarian vs. Wall of Flesh scene; below are George’s black + white work-in progress sketches of the showdown art. We can’t wait to share the full-colour art piece; the mat will be perfect as a desk mat or for playing other card games.

---

DEVELOPER SETS
George recently finished all of the Developer vanity sets for the game; here they are in all their painted glory! We’d like to say a huge thank you to the Re-Logic team for letting us include them, and for the developers’ feedback on their sets.

---

MEET US AT ESSEN SPIEL!
From October 3rd to 6th, we’ll be showing Terraria: The Board Game at Essen Spiel in Germany; the world’s largest tabletop game convention. If you’re coming to the show, we’d love to meet you; please stop by Hall 4, booth 4C430 to check out the latest version of the game (we’re between Hall 5 and the Galleria).

---

We're looking forward to sharing even more next month. Remember; if you missed the campaign but would still like to get your hands on the game, late pledges are now available via the link below:

Terraria - Loki ISP

Greetings Terrarians!

Back to school already? That may have set the record for the fastest-feeling Summer of all time. We hope everyone at least got a chance to grab some fun times with friends and family over the past few months - before we all plunge headlong into what Fall has in store. On the Terraria front, we are full speed ahead in the second half of the year, with development of 1.4.5 still going quite well (we are nearing the 50th beta of this dev cycle!). Each month sees the addition of even more cool stuff - we are particularly excited for what was added this month, though we are only going to spoil one of the more "shocking" tidbits for now. We know everyone wants that juicy release date still, but we are patiently working through our list of "to do's", and we do not want to ever cut any corners... so it will still be a bit longer, I'm afraid.

With that out of the way... let's take a look at a particularly intriguing State of the Game!

PC - RE-LOGIC

TERRARIA - WEATHERING THE STORM

While Terraria has had various weather effects for quite some time, they have mostly been cosmetic. Outside of wind - which can impact movement and projectiles - and possibly the visibility-limiting blizzard/sandstorms, weather has never really played a huge role in the Terraria adventure. Terraria 1.4.5 aims to change that up a bit by not only adding some new natural/weather phenomenons, but also making some weather elements more... interactive.

Remember, if you feel your hair standing on end, it may be time to seek shelter indoors! How shocking!

What other goodies have the team added this month? Well, be sure to check out the Console/Mobile section for at least one more spoiler... but as always, some things will remain a secret. Until next time folks!

TMODLOADER NEWS - TML TEAM

Hello everyone!

The tModLoader team and our amazing community of contributors continues to improve tModLoader. On September 1st the monthly update release of tModLoader will go live. This month's release contains many improvements to the user experience, some gameplay bug fixes, as well as new features with examples and documentation for mod makers.

One new feature we want to showcase in particular is in-game workshop tag filtering. This has been a highly requested feature and we hope this new filter will help users find the mods they want more easily in-game. We expect this feature to especially help users find mods that support their native language.

This month, the DR team spent a good amount of time on some polish and QOL projects specific to Console and Mobile that we have had on the list for a good while. While we are keeping pace well with the development pipeline for Terraria 1.4.5 on PC, we were pleased that we had some available time to go ahead and tackle these rather than having to wait for a future update. More on that at a later time. That said, let's check out a quick Terraria spoiler, shall we?

IF YOU LOVE YOUR CRITTERS SET THEM FREE!

Think outside the cage - free your captured critters from confinement while keeping them close by!

Terraria 1.4.5 will allow players to place captured critters out in the open via "leashing" them to a specific location. We hope this will help make your favorite Terraria world feel more lively than ever!

Until next time, Console & Mobile friends - thanks for all of your love and support!

TERRARIA MERCHANDISE UPDATES

TERRARIA - THE BOARD GAME UPDATE

Hello Terrarians! Chris here, lead developer at Paper Fort Games. This month, we’ve got development news, art to share, and an update on our adopted hive.

If you missed the campaign but would like to get your hands on the game, don’t worry! Late pledges are now available by clicking the link below...

TERRARIA: THE BOARD GAME CAMPAIGN LATE PLEDGES

---

Game Development
Over the past month, we’ve been fine-tuning some of the game’s mechanisms and rules based on feedback received from backers and playtesters. Here are some of the features we’ve been focusing on:

  • Movement, digging and line-of-sight rules (these have been simplified and made more consistent)
  • Weapon range adjustments to better reflect the digital game
  • Hook-based movement; equip a hook to get around more easily!
  • Difficulty scaling for 1/2 player vs 3/4 player games, including changes to objectives, bosses and available inventory slots based on player count.
  • Small changes to resource/ equipment sharing rules to disincentivise inventory offloading pre-death
  • Addition of pylons allowing long-distance mid to end-game travel.
We’ve also been working on physical aspects of the game, making some quality-of-life improvements to the player boards and enemy wound tracking.

---

Biome Tiles: Now with Fan-Chosen Critters!
A few months ago, and during the campaign, we asked for fans’ favourite critters, and we’ve been adding as many of them as we can to the game’s biome tiles (alongside ambient objects!). Below are just a few examples (there are many, many more!); which critters can you spot?

Adding these new features has really brought the tiles to life and made each feel even more unique. Though these are just aesthetic additions, we hope you’ll have fun discovering your favourite critters amongst the tiles!

---

Modular Miniatures
We’ve been working closely with our manufacturing partners on the boss miniatures to make sure that they’re easy to put together and take apart; below are examples of the ‘key’ system we’re working on. We’ve requested a couple of changes (for example, now that King Slime is transparent, we need to change the direction of the keys so that the sticky-out bit of the crown isn’t visible inside the miniature) but even so, we are hoping to receive physical samples for all of the miniatures in the next couple of weeks so we can test them out. We’ll share a video of the miniatures in action when they arrive!

---

The Underground Hive is Live!
The beehive that we adopted as part of the campaign’s social goals has now been chosen; the team down at Much Birch went above and beyond, taking the time to choose a hive worthy of the ‘Underground Jungle’ name! The sign reads 'The 'Underground Jungle' Hive; adopted by Paper Fort Games on behalf of the Terraria community'.

UNDERGROUND JUNGLE HIVE

---

We're looking forward to sharing even more next month. Remember; if you missed the campaign but would still like to get your hands on the game, late pledges are now available via the link below:

TERRARIA DISCORD & PENGUIN GAMES PARKOUR COLLABORATION

For our next Terraria Discord event, we have partnered with Penguin Games to create a parkour speedrun event! This speedrun event will have two separate brackets to ensure everyone has a chance at getting a place no matter their skill level.

The beginners bracket will play the course: Empyrean. The experienced bracket will play the course: Sans.

Because the experienced bracket will be running on a more advanced course, the prizes for placing high on the leaderboard will be more grand. While you can only submit active times for ONE BRACKET, you are free to switch for any reason. When switching brackets, the event team will remove any times you had from the leaderboard from the bracket you're switching from. Because of this though, we will not be doing a public leaderboard until the event is over.

Join the official Terraria Discord and visit our #server-announcement channel for all parkour event details.

Until next time, Terrarians - we hope you have an amazing month, and we look forward to bringing you the latest and greatest next time!

Greetings Terrarians!

What a ridiculously hot month July has been for pretty much everyone, and we are not just talking about the temperatures outside. Can you believe that it has been a year since the Great War of Axes & Trees? Of course, this year, it's been the the Terraria CEO Standoff - which way did you fall on how Terraria should be pronounced? What did you make of Temporary-CEO Chippy's ideas for the game? Anything there you'd like to see become a reality?

All that said, let's get into the latest and greatest of all things Terraria!

PC - RE-LOGIC

TERRARIA - WHIPPING UP SOME 1.4.5 SPOILERS

Observant Terrarians have likely noted several new whips that are coming your way in Terraria 1.4.5 - welcome additions for all of those summoner players out there! We haven't really taken a close look at a lot of these, but we thought we might do so with a never-before-seen whip. One imbued with the very power of the Queen of the Terrarian Jungle...

Unleash the volatile energies that permeate the Jungle on unwary foes - what a Vulgar Display of Flower indeed!

The team, of course, remains hard at work on both adding new things as well as tweaking and fixing things that we have already added. We know everyone wants a release date/window, but we are not ready to provide that just yet. Just be patient for us a bit longer... it will be worth it in the end.

PlayStation, XBOX, Nintendo Switch, Mobile - DR STUDIOS

The team at DR Studios has been able to spend a bit of time on the side diving into Terraria crossplay in an attempt to make some progress on that in parallel to the ongoing work on Terraria 1.4.5. The sooner we can get to the unanswered questions there, the better, right? Again, no promises, but we are happy with the progress thus far. That said, shall we dive into some 1.4.5 spoiler action?

CHANGE YOUR VOICE, FOOL YOUR FRIENDS, FUN AT PARTIES!

Why be stuck with the same old human voice effects when you can embrace your inner zombie... or turkey?

Terraria 1.4.5 introduces all new accessories that will allow players to change the way they sound.

TERRARIA: THE BOARD GAME KICKSTARTER RECAP

Over 15,000 Terrarians supported the campaign, raising over 2 million dollars; what an incredible total! It’s not all about the final number, of course; we had a fantastic time getting there too. Here are some of our campaign highlights:

- We unlocked over 50 stretch goals to maximise the content and quality of the game, including a transparent King Slime boss miniature, promo packs, deluxe dice, developer vanity sets and a foiled, uniquely numbered, limited edition Pwnhammer card for every backer!

- We were able to support conservation charities via our social goals; we've adopted an orca, penguins, a beehive and a vulture on behalf of the Terraria community, as well as planting 100 trees!

- We held an AMA over on the official Terraria Discord and answered loads of great questions from fans; about the game, about working with the Re-Logic team and even about our favourite snacks… You can read all of the questions and our answers here: PAPER FORT GAMES AMA RECAP.

TERRARIA GRAPHIC NOVEL SERIES - SHIPPING COSTS UPDATE & MORE

Our friends at 50 Amp Productions have some news and reminders that they would like to share - check it out!

  • We heard a great deal of concern about the price of international shipping... and we agreed! International shipping rates are ridiculous. It took us more time than we hoped because the feat was greater than we had imagined. However, we are happy to share that our new shipping services have been integrated into our web store, and you should find that your shipping rates were slashed to a fraction of what they once were.
  • Come by and check it out! And if you live in a country that has not yet seen the price change, email us at help@50ampproductions.com (mailto:help@50ampproductions.com) and tell us what country and we will look into it for you.
  • For US fans, if you go to the site, you will see there are shipping savings for you as well. Spend $40 and we will pay your shipping for you. As a thank you for your continued support!
  • The graphic novel collection is available for preorders on Barnes and Noble, Target.com, Amazon, Booksamillion…you name it! The release date is October 15 and you will be ordering direct from the retailer. We priced it at $10.99, essentially giving you over 20 pages for free. The book collects volume 1, issues 1-4 of the continuing comic book series and will get you ready to read volume 2! We are really proud of the book and hope you check it out.
  • Lastly, we wanted to remind you that as you read this, all materials from issues 1-6 are in stock and shipping within days of order, barring mail holidays, of course! There is no preorder this time, so you can check it out, order it, and have it in your hands all within a tiny window of time.

Greetings Terrarians!

June has been an exciting month, to be sure! Alongside the steady forward march of Terraria development, we saw the Terraria Board Game crowdfunding campaign go completely nuts and we also were able to finally reveal the special vanity set designed by a huge Terraria fan, Frank, via Make-A-Wish®. Suffice to say, it was an eventful month - and July looks to be just as hot. Speaking of heat, it seems to be ridiculously hot everywhere this summer - so no better time to keep cool, stay inside, and start that next Terraria playthrough!

Now, let's dive into some refreshing Terraria news...

PC - RE-LOGIC

TERRARIA - OVER 58 MILLION STRONG... AND GROWING!

It has been quite some time since we gave an update on just how massive the Terraria fanbase has grown. This was somewhat by design, as we had our sights set on doing so once we passed a somewhat-obscure game about a plumber and his brother trying to save a princess from this dragon-turtle thing...

Thanks to the support of Terrarians everywhere, we are very proud to share that Terraria has surpassed 58 million units sold - 58.7m to be more exact, with nearly 32m from PC alone!

Once again, we are beyond humbled and thankful for your continued support - it is the force that drives us every day to make even more awesome Terraria experiences. I wonder what might happen when we get to sixty million...

MAKING A WISH COME TRUE IN TERRARIA

In case you missed it, the Re-Logic team recently had the distinct pleasure to work alongside a massive Terraria fan, Frank, as we crafted his very own Terraria vanity set! Frank is a 17-year-old teenager from Rockaway, New Jersey who is battling a critical illness. Frank declared to Make-A-Wish® New Jersey that his one true wish was to have his own Vanity Set in Terraria - and we were beyond thrilled to make that a reality!

You can check out Frank's vanity set - the Heroicis Set, complete with "Film Noir" shader - when Terraria 1.4.5 releases!

TERRARIA TESTING PLAYTHROUGHS - WHAT'S IT LIKE?

Ever wondered what those Re-Logic beta testing playthroughs are like? What sorts of bugs are found? What shenanigans take place? Well, Chippy recently put together a nice little video about his experiences as a beta tester on Terraria 1.4.5 around a year ago - a documentary for science, if you will.

Could YOU pass the Terraria Quiz?

Developers who are willing to contribute may do so by doing PRs to the tModLoader/tModLoader branch. (See tModLoader/tModLoader)

PlayStation, XBOX, Nintendo Switch, Mobile - DR STUDIOS

The team at DR Studios remains hard at work on both Terraria 1.4.5 content as well as console and mobile specific tweaks and fixes. More details to come on all of that down the line, but suffice to say that we think that the Terraria experience will be the best that it has ever been on all platforms once 1.4.5 comes out! That said, let's dive into some spoilers shall we?

MORE CONTROL MAPPING TWEAKS

As we mentioned last month, we are undergoing a full review of all gamepad/control maps and making QOL changes that we think everyone will enjoy. Here's a taste of some changes from this past month's work on this project:

A buff icon was added in the top left corner, which only displays if the player has unused buff items.

The state display in the top right corner has been expanded on to include more things and their mappings. Health / mana potions also display here in appropriate circumstances, though whether they'll be moved up with buffs is still being discussed.

THESE AREN'T YOUR PARENTS' BOMBS ANYMORE!

Bombs - not just for blasting random holes in the ground anymore!

Until next time, Console & Mobile friends - thanks for all of your love and support!

TERRARIA MERCHANDISE UPDATES

TERRARIA - THE BOARD GAME UPDATE

June saw the completion of the Terraria Board Game Kickstarter - and wow, we are blown away!!!

Over 15,000 Terrarians - both old and new - pledged over two million dollars to make Terraria: The Board Game as amazing as it can possibly be. Every single stretch goal was met, the comments were amazing to read and respond to, and we cannot wait to get everything put together and in your hands!

The current expected delivery timing for Terraria: The Board Game is June 2025, but the team at Paper Fort Games will update us all as things move along. In the meantime, the Re-Logic team will continue to partner closely with PFG in order to ensure this latest Terraria experience is authentic and of the highest quality.

If you missed out on the Kickstarter, don't fret - we expect a version to hit retailers down the road as well. The gameplay will be the same, though perhaps with a bit fewer fancy doodads.

Greetings Terrarians!

As you all know, we cannot say enough about how much we appreciate the members of our community. In addition, we have always tried our best to be a charity-minded company. With that as background, we are beyond thrilled to share that we are partnering with the Make-A-Wish® Foundation to make a young Terrarian's wish come true!

Make-A-Wish® New Jersey contacted us a few months ago to share that they had a huge Terraria fan whose biggest wish we could help make a reality. Of course, we jumped at the chance to make this happen and we were quickly introduced to Frank. Frank is a 17-year-old teenager from Rockaway, New Jersey who is battling a critical illness. Frank declared to Make-A-Wish® New Jersey that his one true wish was to have his own Vanity Set in Terraria.

Since then, we have been working closely with Frank to bring this Vanity Set to life - from initial concepts to various iterations to adding flavor text and more, it has been a real honor and pleasure to work hand-in-hand with Frank to make his dream a reality. He is certainly a Terrarian, through and through!

With all that said, we are pleased to be able to reveal Frank's Vanity set, which will be coming everyone's way with the Terraria 1.4.5 update...

HEROICIS ARMOR SET

Frank's initial concept art - by Dnsu (IG : dnsu_1 - FB: Dnsu)

We also included a brand new shader, inspired by the "film noir" style of Frank's design. We haven't fully sorted out how this will be toggled just yet, but we will in time.

As always, there may be further tweaks and such to this set and the shader before it goes live in Terraria 1.4.5, but we didn't want to wait any longer to share it with all of you!

We also sent Frank a little Terraria swag...

Huge thanks go out to Frank, Make-A-Wish® New Jersey, the entire Terraria dev team, and our very own Jaxrud🌳 who took on the monumental task of fulfilling this wish. We cannot wait to see Frank's reaction when he gets a chance to dive into Terraria with his very own Vanity Set later this year!

ABOUT MAKE-A-WISH® NEW JERSEY

Make-A-Wish® New Jersey creates life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses. In the fight against a critical illness, a wish serves as a catalyst for renewed strength and encouragement for every child and family on their journey. A wish helps kids look past their limitations, families overcome anxiety and entire communities experience joy. Most importantly, wishes can improve a child’s quality of life. We believe a single wish transforms lives.

With their national headquarters based in Phoenix, Arizona, Make-A-Wish® is one of the world’s leading children’s charities, with 57 chapters serving children in every community in the United States and its territories, and nearly 40 international affiliates. Make-A-Wish® New Jersey was founded in 1983. Serving children in every municipality in the Garden State, Make-A-Wish® New Jersey has granted nearly 12,000 wishes since its inception. Greetings Terrarians!

Summer is finally here - well for some of us at least. We are greatly enjoying the warmer temperatures and the chance to get outside a lot more. Of course, development work remains at a steady pace as we draw ever-closer to Terraria 1.4.5. In the meantime, we hope that you enjoyed the 13th Anniversary celebration (and re-release of 1.1) earlier this month... and that you are looking forward to the upcoming board game as much as we are! 2024 is nearly half-done, and we are quite excited about what the rest of the year has in store for Terrarians everywhere.

With that out of the way, let's dip our toes into this month's pool of Terraria news!

PC - RE-LOGIC

TERRARIA 1.4.5 - THE RE-LOGIC FAMILY GROWS!

The Re-Logic team is beyond ecstatic to reveal that our little dev team family has grown by two with the official addition of jopojelly and Kazzymodus! Just who are these new Re-Logic team members and what will/have they be working on? Let's find out!

KAZZYMODUS
Kazzymodus has been a beta-tester for Terraria for more than five years, having experienced the development of 1.4 - still known as 1.3.6 at the time - onward first-hand from start to soon-to-be finish. During that time they've tested a great deal of content, weeding out a lot of issues before it ends up in your collective hands, as well as giving feedback and suggestions to make sure any new (and old!) content is the best it can be.

Now in charge of Quality Assurance, they're doing their best to make your 1.4.5 experience as smooth and bug-free as possible!

---

JOPOJELLY

Jopojelly became involved in tModLoader during its infancy and quickly became integral in making mods and adding new features to tModLoader. He has always strived to make the experiences of both using mods and making mods better. Rather than make new content himself, jopojelly focused on guiding millions of tModLoader players in experiencing modded content through his quality of life mods Recipe Browser, Boss Checklist, and Census - to name a few. These mods help make players aware of all the awesome bosses, items, and town NPCs added by other mods they have installed so that they can experience them all.

Jopojelly will continue to work on collaborating with the tModLoader community on adding new features and bug fixes to tModLoader.

TMODLOADER NEWS - TML TEAM

Hello everyone!

The tModLoader team and our amazing community of contributors continues to improve tModLoader. On June 1st the monthly update release of tModLoader will go live. This month's release contains several UI fixes and stability fixes.

This month we've fixed a few UI issues: some fixes for the ModPacks feature, some UI fixes for multiplayer connections, and a UI fix for Mod Browser / downloading mods.

Another month of keeping pace while also tackling some console/mobile specific issues (more on that in a moment) has gone by and we are as excited as ever! Even managing to get a little crossplay progress done in the background. That said, you came for the spoilers so here they are!

We wanted to show off the new Rat Transformation as well - so we hope you enjoy seeing this different spin on this month's spoiler!

BANNERS BANNERS EVERYWHERE!

We have also been hard at work in an attempt to simplify and clarify Control Banners (the little areas that show button mappings on screen). This has been a complaint we have heard from many Terrarians, so we hope this helps - and makes more sense - than the current version. Let's dive into some details!

KEEP IN MIND THAT THIS IS ALL VERY WORK IN PROGRESS AND SUBJECT TO CHANGE!

In the live version of the game, a control banner at the bottom of the screen displays every single binding.

---

Because absolutely everything is listed here, it forces players to “fish” for specific actions. This takes a considerable amount of time and slows gameplay down, as it creates a disconnect between where the controls are displayed versus where the player is looking.

To address this, we started by splitting the bottom banner off into several dedicated ones. At the moment these exist in the following places:

Bottom of the screen. This is primarily for a few general items which are not context-specific. At the moment we are working to shorten this, as it is still somewhat long (in part because all bindings display now, regardless of whether a modifier trigger is held).

Up near the minimap & state display - contains smart cursor, map options, chat options, and the like.
Next to the hotbar - contains anything related to the inventory, as well as information for hotbar swapping

At the bottom of inventory pages - these contain bindings that you would normally perform in the inventory, such as splitting a stack and others.

---

On top of this, however, we’ve also started placing certain bindings in bespoke areas

If a “Switch to Hotbar #X” binding exists, we display it over the respective hotbar slot.

If an inventory binding exists for something that has a side button (such as Quick Stack or Tools), then we display it below the button.

We are hoping these make certain actions clearer to players, and allow more focus to go towards gameplay and less on figuring out what each button does.

---

Until next time, Console & Mobile friends - thanks for all of your love and support!

TERRARIA GRAPHIC NOVEL SERIES - UPDATE ON NEW SHIPPING SYSTEM AND ISSUE 6

Hello everyone!

We tried to have an update on the new international shipping system integration and the re-opening of orders ready in time for today's State of the Game, but we ran into some last minute technical issues that we want to iron out first. Most important is ensuring the best possible customer experience when we open up the gates. When we reopen, we will unveil the issue 6 materials and this time, they will be in stock as we begin taking orders, so we will be able to ship new orders without delay.

Won't be much longer - we figure it will be sometime next week, barring any more last minute problems.

Stay tuned!!!

Terraria - Loki ISP

You heard right, everyone - Terraria has officially entered its teenage years. Don't worry, we promise that we won't be any more moody and rebellious than we always have been! This time of the year is always special to the Terraria development team. It is a time of celebration, but moreso a time of reflection: on the journey we have taken thus far, what is coming soon, and what may lie ahead beyond that horizon. It is humbling to know that our small team has been able to release and support a game as successful as Terraria for all these years.

Even more humbling is the unwavering support that each of you have shown us throughout those thirteen years. Through the ups and downs that game dev and even life has thrown at us - and all of you - your support has been the one constant that we know we can rely on each and every day. In fact. we appreciate you so much that we got YOU a birthday present...

In celebration of Terraria's 13th Anniversary - and building upon the recent Undeluxe Edition - we are releasing Terraria 1.1 as a beta branch on Steam today!

Enter a world where Hardmode was brand new and the mech bosses represented the ultimate challenge - take a glimpse at how far Terraria has come!

We are looking forward to seeing what you make of Terraria 1.4.5 an Crossplay (hopefully!) . Who knows what exactly the future holds beyond that, but what we do know is that the path forward for the Terraria franchise and its fans is a very bright one! We expect to see you all back here next year and for many more years to come!

TALL TALES FROM TERRARIA TESTERS

We thought it might be fun for everyone to get a chance to hear a few stories from our Terraria testing crew. These could be broad personal reflections - or even just fun little happenings that occurred along the way over the years. Without further ado, let the storytelling commence!

DARTHMORF
Hey everyone, I’m ‘darthmorf’ or Sam – some of you may know me as a moderator on the Terraria forums or may have used my Terraria Logo Maker tool. I’ve also been lucky enough to help test early version of the game since around mid 2017 and have had a great time over the years getting to peek behind the curtain and get to know the developers and my fellow testers (and a few other people from the community too!). The group multiplayer playthroughs are so much fun, and I still manage to learn something new about the game every time I play ... between the many many deaths that is. Certain moments during testing for both Master Mode and the even harder seed variants like 'For the Worthy' were particularly tough, not to mention the trolling from other members of the testing team and even the developers! I very much empathise with the original 1.3 Expert Mode testers ...

We got to see lots of funny, weird and interesting bugs too. I sadly can't mention all of them, but a favourite of mine was the brief period of time when ALL projectiles were affected by wind. It made certain boss fights quite interesting, even if it was totally unplayable! Just don't mention infinite boulders, or the 'Wall of Guide'...

Hmm, yes this is how you sit in a chair, right?

There seems to be something wrong with this campfire.

Motion smoothing for teleporting enemies might have been a mistake...

What do you mean I can't deploy my stool while grappled to a wall!?

Another huge highlight of my time was getting to meet up with a few other members of the community, along with some people from Re-Logic, DR Studios and 505 Games back in July 2019. It was truly a blast to hang out in person and I cannot wait until we get to do it next.

I've been a part of this amazing community for a while now, and I'm still blown away by just how friendly and kind everyone is. It's been a huge privilege to witness everything I have, and to take part in so much. I'm proud to have been able to give back a little by organising community events such as the amazing Creation Compendium (go check these out if you haven't - there are some stunning creations in there!) I'd also like to thank Re-Logic from the bottom of my heart for all the amazing opportunities they've given and generosity that they've shown me. I'm lucky enough to have my own career in game development which I would not have without what I've learnt testing this game.

Here's to another 13 years!!!
Wall of guide?

J BAME
I remember back when beta testing 1.4.4 balance changes, Nimbus and I noticed that whip sizes were strangely inconsistent, sometimes some whips were inexplainably bigger than normal. We quickly realized some armors were increasing Whip Range when they were not supposed to. We started taking off pieces to see which one was bugged, then we realized it wasn't just armor, it was accessories too.

It was so weird that we had to ask Leinfors to check the code and see what the problem was. He looked up which items increased whip range... and then he found the problem. When he gave a 10% range bonus to Tiki Mask, he had accidentally given the same buff to 90% of the items in the game.

This was caused by a single character typo in the code: Instead of checking for which Item ID was equal to Tiki Mask's, it was checking which ID was equal or greater than Tiki Mask's. That was a fun day. We will always remember you, Leinfors.

AURORA3500
My story with Terraria began with learning about it when I was in my last year of high school through youtube videos shared by my classmates. It looked like a very interesting game and I got it gifted to me in late 2011. I played it overtime and learned a lot about it starting from 1.1. And then lurked in Terraria Online for a few years. Mostly to follow dev updates and to get Tconfig Mods.

Later when TCF was born, I would join that after learning it was the new official Forums of Terraria. At 1st I still lurked, and mostly used it to see news for the updates. Seeing the announcement for both Terraria Otherworld and 1.3 was a very exciting time and I got involved more in the community during that time.

I had no idea where it would lead a year later, as the call for new Moderators was put out, I put in a moderator application. Because TCF had become more than a place to discuss Terraria. It was a family. I was inspired from learning what Terraria developers such as Leinfors and Ghostar have done for the game and seeing that they started out as Forum members just like many of us. When I was accepted into the Forum staff, the Forum staff and developers also became family to me. TCF means a lot to me due to how a real effort is put forth to ensure that it is a welcoming place for many people. It is taken for granted across the internet which is why it feels like a treasure.

Sometime after that, I was accepted as a beta tester, to test for the game I love a ton and have invested more hours than any other game into. Together with Unit One who joined the Forum staff and became a tester at the same time as me, we tested the end of 1.3.5, and began to test 1.3.6. At the time none of us had any idea it would become the grand 1.4 update known as Journey's End.

As it developed, I continued my work on the Forums with the Forum staff, and also worked with Leinfors and other testers to test the game, report bugs, and share our own feedback. Memories with Leinfors, other testers from our chats and playthroughs are memories I continue to cherish. One of my favorite moments of 1.4 testing was when the Bestiary was confirmed to be added to the game. I love Monster Guide type features in the various JRPGs and Metroidvanias I love and I doubted my eyes that it was also coming to Terraria. I asked Lein if I was dreaming. And he assured me that I wasn't dreaming, that it was being planned for awhile. It's a moment that still gets me giddy.

One of the favorite bugs I discovered during 1.4 testing was with the Zombie Merman Moonwalking backwards. It never made it to release due to how I looked at Blood Moon fishing once it was added.

1.4.4 is another standout update to me. It is my next favorite update due to how it added the Remix seed, and increased the stack size for all items to 9999, among other additions.

Terraria itself has held longtime appeal to me due to how it takes elements of platformers, metroidvania games, and JRPGs and blends them with sandbox building gameplay. They have always been my favorite types of games and are mixed perfectly in Terraria.

Beyond Terraria itself, the community, dev team, and my fellow Forum staff members and testers remain an important family to me. To this day I continue to give what I can to it in hopes of making all of it an even better place.

Times were hard in 2023 when we lost Leinfors. It has taken time to process, but I've used that time to better myself physically and mentally in multiple areas of life, and continue to be an active part of the Forums while testing the game. I think it's what Lein would want. So I plan to keep giving myself to TCF, and Terraria, to ensure the Forums can be a home for anyone, and to make 1.4.5 another amazing update, and anything beyond that as well.

CRIDDLE
Hi, I'm Criddle! Maybe you know me from somewhere? I've been a beta tester since May 2017. Getting to contribute to the game and helping out the developers at Re-Logic alongside my fellow testers has been pretty incredible.

One of my favorite things to remember are the times we got to create our own paintings. The group playthroughs are also always exciting and chaotic. It can be really interesting listening to the devs discuss ideas.

Over the years I've run into many strange and amusing issues while testing the game.

...did someone mention infinite boulders?

FAIRYPRINCESSSERENITY
So, I don't exactly have a lot of funny stories to share. I tend to do a lot of the background building work that benefits everyone whenever our collective group does a playthrough together to test out new features. Arenas, NPC housing, farms. You get the idea. When I'm not doing that, I like to do things that try to break the game. If I can get Red to go “We gotta nerf that,” that's a good day. I also like to do funny stuff when no one is looking so they can react to it later on.

I remember when I imported a bunch of Terra Toilets into the playthrough world we were on, and I put them at a bunch of fishing holes. When someone asked why that was there I said “If you sit on a toilet, it makes you fish better. All the expert fishermen sit on toilets.” You know what happened? That joke became an actual feature.

When a bunch of us beta testers first joined the crew, we joined a world that had just gotten started a few hours ago. Red said “You need to use torches that match the biome you're in” because we were starting to test torch luck. I wanted to live in the ice biome, but I hate the ice torches. But Leinfors said as long as I don't use wrong torches, it wasn't against the rules to use whatever I want. So I used White Torches. And Lamps. And Lanterns. I made my home. Expanded it. Again, and again. I ended up making this amazing frozen base, and then because I had a lot of time to spare, I built a whole mountain on top of that. I remember that mountain fondly. Whenever I'm feeling nostalgic, I open that world and have a look at it. I wasn't an outlier - Everyone had a house on that world. One of the other testers (I won't say who) was crazy enough to have their house in the Crimson biome.

XMAN101
During one of the beta playthroughs for 1.4, Leinfors and a number of other testers were trying to figure out a strange bug with the Windy Day music. It seemed to play without rhyme or reason.

Turns out, it was no bug. It just so happened that my base on this playthrough was in range of spawn and I had set up a music box to play Windy Day at my base. Once discovered, it was promptly deactivated by Leinfors.

UNIT ONE
Happy Birthday Terraria!

It has been a wild ride that I am so thankful for. Getting to beta test the game is a dream come true, and working with my fellow beta testers has been such a wonderful experience. All of them love the game, and nerd out to it like I do, sometimes so much so that I can't keep up with their knowledge. They are truly passionate and experts at what they do.

One of my favorite bugs involved platinum axes showing up on empty weapon racks after opening legacy worlds. The weapon racks would be empty, I'd save and quit. Then open up that world in the newest beta, and boom, there were platinum axes on them. But not on all the empty weapon racks, it seemed so random and weird. Like I'm sure many of the other beta testers will mention in their stories, it was Leinfors that was right there, ready to dive into it.

After his first reaction (which was "Wtf Unit, phantom Platinum Axes" to which I replied, "Yeahhhh, I dunno..."), he posted this:

Everyone tried to figure it out, people were loading in old worlds and got the platinum axes showing up, but only on certain racks. After a bit, we left it for the dev team to sort out (like they always magically do).

So many platinum axes! Can you spot why it was happening? Turns out that only the weapon racks facing left were getting these phantom axes. Right-facing weapon racks remained empty on world load. Once Yorai and Lein had figured it out, all the phantom axes were put to rest, never to show up again.

DOYLEE
Don't challenge the creator of the game to a copper shortsword duel. He will win in ways you don't initially expect, whether that be boulders or banishment.

MANAUSER
One time I found an obscure bug in the king statue. Specifically, a lightning bug. We were testing 1.4 which added the NPC happiness system, and I took it upon myself to manually check every neighbor combination and biome preference. That all went fine, but I was using the king and queen statues to help with moving NPCs around and happened to find something completely different: The king statue could summon lightning bugs if there were any on the screen. That bug report got a surprised "Whaaaat" from Leinfors. But it turned out that the king statue was supposed to (and now does) work on the traveling merchant, but guess no one ever noticed it wasn't working because they didn't know it should. See, the traveling merchant is NPC 368 and the lightning bug is NPC 358 so a little typo was all it took to get a funny result.

SIGMA
Greetings, Terrarians!

You are probably reading this hoping for spoilers? Loki has been posting teasers for Terraria 1.4.5. At Re-Logic? They're actively working on Terraria 1.96.3!

Don't hold your breath waiting for Terraria 2… it’s at least 3000 years away.

Nah, just kidding. This is one of many amusing bugs that have come up during playtesting. After all, Terraria is a game where eating lunch in midair is a comparatively normal thing to do.

When a game has existed for 13 years and has over 5000 items (and counting), there are going to be strange and unexpected interactions. One of the very early (if not first) bugs I reported as a tester:

When meteors were shown in the background before landing, they were initially visible in the Underworld.

Herein provides an interesting crossover between bugs and contributions. An early version of my painting ‘Blessing from the Heavens’ was a reference to this. It had an Underworld frame and was intended to be found in Obsidian Towers. But the Towers were already quite full of paintings, so it was moved to the Floating Islands and given a skyware frame. Having the opportunity to make some paintings has been the biggest highlight of being involved with Terraria. I hope you like the paintings as much as we did making them!

(Leinfors, I am grateful that you were able to make `Strange Growths’ cycle between the four painting types when placed. You are missed by us all.)

Tester contributions are strictly cosmetic – paintings, names, tooltips, etc. Any new content and the direction of the game is with Re-Logic and its developers. Ever noticed how all of the town slimes’ names start with S? That was somewhat coincidental. We contributed names for slimes on a spreadsheet. Eventually we noticed a pattern emerged: The majority of them started with S. The team decided to keep it that way. (Most of those references the wiki mentions are not actually references. It's coincidental the name is the same.)

Speaking of references… Contrary to what the wiki says, the in-game dog name Lucky has nothing to do with 101 Dalmatians. It’s the name of my real-life dog. He is not a dalmatian. If you do want to find a new reference, there’s another in-game dog name named after my real-life dog. His name comes from a TV show.

I made the Abigail screenshot that was used in the 1.4.3 release announcement. It was not used, but I also made an in-game screenshot with Deerclops, Chester and Wilson.

With news about greedy corporations, abandoned Early Access launches, on-disc DLC, and mob votes to garner attention – how has Terraria managed to live so long, and with so many free updates? The answer: Everyone in Re-Logic plays Terraria and enjoys it. They all want the best they can. Whether paid or volunteer, it really is a labour of love. It's been 5 years since I was asked to join the testing team and I've enjoyed every minute of it. Throughout the journey, I've met some amazing people and made very good friends.

To Re-Logic: Thank you for the opportunity. I am grateful for it every day.

To my fellow team members: You are some of the most amazing people I know.

To the player base: Your enthusiasm, dedication and strong community are what has kept (and will keep) Terraria growing and expanding. Everything Re-Logic does, it does for you.

DISCIPILE
One of the most memorable experiences I’ve had so far in my time as a tester for Terraria was during the summer of 2022, where Redigit invited us to play through a yet-to-be-polished version of what, at the time, was called the “everything seed” (later known as the “zenith” and “get fixed boi” seeds). The most notable difference between what we played and what was released was the number of Queen Bee larvae scattered throughout the world (it has since been drastically reduced after this playthrough, due to the sheer number of accidental summons and therefore effective armageddons during the early game). There were times where Red got so fed up with the Queen Bee summons he would temporarily give himself a Meowmere and slay them all.

However as amazing as all of this was to experience first hand, what I remember the most, and will likely never forget, was when we, the testers and developers of Terraria, were set to face off against the underworld’s fiercest pre-hardmode foe, the Wall of Flesh — only there was one unforeseen issue that was only discovered halfway through the fight: the world difficulty was set to effectively Master mode, whereas it should have been set to Expert. As such, we were set to face a Wall of Flesh with just over 200,000 health, and the encounter resulted in several dozen deaths, and the Wall of Flesh going from one side of the world, to the other, undefeated, with just under half of their health remaining. This was the single most scuffed boss battle I have ever encountered in almost 13 years of playing Terraria, and also the single most enjoyable. There was even a time during the fight where everyone in the world other than Redigit and I had been slain; to fight alongside the creator of Terraria as other testers and developers cheered us on as we fought against the Wall of Flesh was nothing short of an unforgettable experience to say the least.

JENOSIS
Hello! I’m Jenosis and I’d like to share my experience in Terraria both before and after I became a tester!

Before I played Terraria I was unironically in the camp of “oh wow 2D Minecraft”. It started in 2012 with a friend asking me to come over and play it with him for a weekend while his parents were out of town. It felt slow and kind of clunky at first, at least on console (PS3), but it started to get really good and before I knew it I was running around in Hell with a space laser gun re-enacting the whole plot of DOOM trying to find magic weapons.

I returned home and asked my parents if I could download and play it on our family computer (which was quite ancient). I began to play it and forgot about it for a good bit (as it was my senior year in highschool), but returned to it shortly after my graduation after enrolling in Fall college classes. I found the Crimson and told my friend all about it and he spent hours trying to find it on his PS3.

As Terraria grew and updated, so did I and eventually began to dabble in modding it with tAPI a few months before 1.3 came out. Come 1.3 in all of its QoL and much needed expansion on existing content I was having even more fun and tModLoader was just starting to become a thing. I got back into modding again and made even more friends while doing so.

Come 2019 I had a hard time trying to keep up with everything in my life. I got something in my TCF inbox one day and it was Cenx reaching out to me asking if I wanted to become a tester. I felt butterflies in my stomach for the sole reason of being involved in one of my favorite all time games. The first day of setup was information and sensation overload, but I learned a lot more than I thought I was going to for my first day.

Over the course of 1.4 Beta there was much to test and find bugs for; I happened to catch a lot of tile related bugs in the process. One of my favorites was being able to plant the vanity trees on gray bricks. Another bug I loved, that was unexplainable and couldn’t repro even now, was the crystal sentry beams coming from the pet butterfly. Makes me wish we had a butterfly summon now.

Seasons have come and gone; so have phases of testing beta updates. Lein had unexpectedly passed away leaving all of us distraught and lost without him. He was a great person and mentor who helped expand, and understand, my views on game development. To this day whenever I or other testers suggest something; I tend to look at it with a reasonably critical eye to see where said thing could fit into the grand scheme of the game.

I’m loving my time helping out and testing the harder bugs so I can help make Terraria a better and more bug free game. Here’s to Terraria and its wonderful community I’ve had the absolute pleasure of interacting with, cheers!

NIKE LEON
My beta testing horror story is from back in 2015. After one of the updates my character saves started overwriting each other. Nobody else was having the bug. And then the next update mysteriously fixed it.We never could figure out why...
