Stronghold: Warlords - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Nate Crowley)

I’ve missed all the demos so far for Stronghold Warlords, the upcoming instalment in Firefly Studios’ long-running castle-building-and-bashing series, despite being a big fan of the original games. But seeing as Warlords is being featured at Ye Olde PAX X EGX, and I had my hands on the new demo (which is out right now!), I figured now was the time to get stuck in.

Well, I’m glad I tried it. And I’m glad I waited, too. It seems Warlords has been through a lot of changes over the course of its development, but what’s there now is very solid indeed. And while it has been delayed from its original launch date this month to January 26, 2021, I’m happy that Firefly are taking their time. Although I’ve only played the single campaign-ish scenario included in the demo, it gave me a solid hit of the satisfaction I associate with the original Stronghold. Plus, more importantly, it manages to genuinely innovate on the formula. Here’s how.

Sid Meier’s Civilization® VI - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (RPS)

On the night of Friday 30th August, at PAX West in Seattle, RPS will raise the dead. Using techniques too dreadful to comprehend, we shall puncture the mortal veil like a sheet of wet tissue paper, and drag something back from the other side. That spirit will be Ghoastus, the Roman Ghost: our first fully spectral staff writer, and the site s occasional historical strategy correspondent. He s erudite, he s wise, and he s in no way a person draped in a sheet and a replica centurion s helmet.

Ghoastus will be interviewing a panel of strategy gaming s leading lights: Ed Beach, lead designer for Civilization VI; Adam Isgreen, creative director for the Age of Empires series; Peter Nicholson, content designer for Imperator: Rome; Jeff Spock, narrative director of Amplitude’s just-announced historical 4X Humankind; and Nicholas Tannahill from Stronghold developers Firefly. From within his circle of chalked wards, Ghoastus will ask them how they mix reality with fiction when making historical games, and how they ve kept well-loved franchises fresh over the years.

Stronghold: Warlords - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Nate Crowley)

With Stronghold: Warlords recently announced at E3, now seems as good a moment as any to look back on the game that kicked off Firefly s seemingly endless series of castle em ups back in 2001. In fact, I m genuinely astonished to learn that Warlords will be the ninth> game in the series, as despite loving the first instalment, I ve managed to play precisely none of the rest. Stronghold was a very literal tower defence game, with some light-yet-satisfying citybuilding and management elements. It also had the vague feeling of being a 14th century take on Home Alone, as you would build up your castle, then surround it with concentric layers of horrid traps in order to thwart waves of pikemen, macelads, swordboys and horseblokes.

FINAL FANTASY VIII - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Dave Irwin)

They just keep coming don’t they? A lot of games were announced at E3 2019, things that we didn’t know about, as well as stuff that’s previously announced, or expansions to already released games. Now, to the casual outsider, what we’re doing might seem absolutely nuts, but we thought we’d put together an alphabetical list of all the PC games that have been confirmed to appear at this year’s E3 show. With well over a hundred of them now in the books, the next year or so looks packed.

Stronghold: Warlords - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Dominic Tarason)

Yet another series announced to be returning at E3 is Firefly’s Stronghold series. Stronghold: Warlords transplants the RTS game of European (and Arabic) castle building and siege-ing to the east, with Japan, Korea, China and other nations represented. Warlords is also expanding the game outwards, and adding a ‘light’ grand strategy layer, letting players boss around the titular warlords; AI controlled minor factions that can work for or against you. While not quite as sprawling as a Total War game or Sins Of A Solar Empire, it’s an interesting way to expand the design. See how the warlords work in the trailer below.
