Life Altered - Senescent Leaf

I recently listened to an interview with Jay Ma (one of the developers behind FTL and Into the Breach). She talked about how in her new game (the amazing Fulcrum Defender on PlayDate) she chose to have a replenishing health bar, because she got a bit tired of roguelike games that punished players for early game mistakes. Meaning that if you lose health in an early battle you would carry the consequences of it throughout the rest of the run.

I liked this thought a lot. And it seemed like it could help me solve a problem I had. I previously basically applied the Slay the Spire formula for map progression: you choose a path with battles, events and rest points - the latter of which gives you an option to upgrade a card or heal your character. However, I want my game to focus a bit more on upgrading (evolving) the creatures (especially since I want players to experience stacking evolutions on one creature), so I need more opportunities for the player to do so. Also, whenever I choose the healing option in Slay the Spire I felt like I chose the 'boring' option.

So I decided to give the player the option to heal or evolve a creature after every battle instead of only on specific map points. Now you can easily mitigate early game mistakes (albeit at the cost of losing an upgrade opportunity) and you have lots of chances to upgrade your creatures to ridiculous levels.

I spent some time rebalancing enemy strengths around this new feature and started playtesting it. Aaannd… I like it. I think it’s a keeper.

You could argue that removing consequence from the game is a bad thing or that it devalues smart playing. But I think the game should be more about crafting a working deck. And if you don’t manage that, later game enemies will usually crush you, regardless of your health. Plus, I can always reduce the healing amount in later ascension stages. But we’ll get to that (maybe in next month's post).

June 2025 progress report

I tried to get the game ready for a demo release on http://itch.io, but I didn’t manage it. Halfway through June I realized that my evolution UI didn’t work and I basically threw the whole thing away and redesigned it. I like it a lot better now, because it doesn’t rely on vertical scrolling through 54 rows of dice anymore (yeah… what was I thinking?).

After:

And then I tried to get the game as bug-free as possible, but I still have some work left in that regard. So let’s shoot for the end of July for that demo release.

Duriano - Dean

In Duriano, every God’s Trail offers a different way to survive and conquer the chaos. Some empower spells, others focus on raw damage or defense. But Aegir’s Trail brings something unique — the sea itself fights alongside you.

Aegir, the God of the Ocean, grants more than just buffs. With this Trail, you gain access to Spirits of the Depth, ethereal allies that launch deadly projectiles at enemies wherever they hide. It’s a trail built for players who want a balance of life steal, evasion, and summoned support — with devastating power scaling over time.

Let’s dive into the depths of Aegir’s Trail and explore how it can shape your next build.

Who is Aegir?

Aegir, ancient deity of the ocean, is not a god of storms or destruction — he’s the patient tide that erodes anything in its path. By following his trail, players tap into the life-giving and life-taking nature of the sea, focusing on evasion, life steal, and scaling projectile damage.

The deeper your devotion, the stronger your bond with the Spirit of the Depth, a summoned ally that transforms your survivability into a source of long-range destruction.

Aegir’s Trail Bonuses

When selected as your main God’s Trail, Aegir grants:

  • +1 Life Steal
(This value is halved if Aegir is not your primary trail.)

It might seem small at first, but this bonus scales heavily with Trail Resonance and synergizes with other builds that benefit from self-healing or sustain.

God’s Trail Resonance Breakdown

As you collect more of Aegir’s Fate's Flavor during your run, you unlock three levels of Resonance. Each one enhances your power and summons stronger spirits to aid you.

Resonance Level 1

(Requires 3 Fate’s Flavor)

  • +10 Life Steal

  • +20 Evasion

  • Duration: 5 seconds

A solid early-game buff that immediately increases your survivability. Perfect for burst sustain in intense fights.

Resonance Level 2

(Requires 6 Fate’s Flavor)

  • +15 Life Steal, +25 Evasion (for 5 seconds)

  • Summon 2 Spirits of the Depth

    • Projectiles seek the nearest enemy

    • Damage: 20 + 300% of Life Steal

    • Attack Speed: 0.3 seconds

    • Global Range

Now the tide turns — literally. The Spirits become your ranged companions, dishing out high-scaling damage. Their effectiveness increases the more life steal you stack, creating massive synergy with weapons and heroes that support sustain-based builds.

Resonance Level 3

(Requires 9 Fate’s Flavor)

  • +25 Life Steal, +35 Evasion (for 5 seconds)

  • Summon 3 Spirits of the Depth

    • Projectiles seek the nearest enemy

    • Damage: 50 + 500% of Life Steal

    • Attack Speed: 0.2 seconds

    • Global Range

This is the peak of Aegir’s power. With three spirits active and incredibly fast attack intervals, the battlefield becomes a storm of ghostly projectiles. If built correctly, this Resonance can carry you through Hell and even Ragnarok modes — especially if you’re running a high-lifesteal, high-evasion hero.

How to Build Around Aegir’s Trail

Looking to make the most out of this Trail? Here are a few smart combinations:

  • Best Heroes:

    • Spectral Warden: Gains bonus damage from Movement Speed, pairs well with Evasion.

    • Vörundr: High HP and defense-focused builds support sustain and long fights.

    • Midguardian: Balanced pick with bonus Armor and movement.

  • Best Weapons:

    • Rúnar’s Vex: Passive Thorn damage lets you focus on evasion and spirit attacks.

    • War Hammer: Benefits from life steal and allows safe spacing between melee and spirit attacks.

    • Yggdrasill Staff: When paired with Spell-based lifesteal augments, this becomes a long-range sustain cannon.

Final Thoughts

Aegir’s Trail is a rare blend of passive survivability and active dominance. Where most trails ask you to deal more damage or tank more hits, Aegir lets you step back and let the ocean fight for you — through summoned spirits and scaling sustain.

Whether you’re a new player looking for extra survival, or a veteran chasing the ultimate Trail synergy, Aegir offers one of the most satisfying late-game payoffs in Duriano.

Next time you feel the sea calling… answer it.
