Spintires [official site] is now back on Steam and an official fix has been released for the crash bug, which was originally rumoured to be sabotage by the game’s developer after a falling out with its publisher. That developer, Pavel Zagrebelny, denies it was sabotage and now seems to be possibly denying any rift with the publisher at all.

The Spintires saga rumbles on. Yesterday, we reported on the apparent ‘timebombs’ in the game’s code, which were causing crashes. Reverse-engineering of the code led to the belief that these crashes had been implemented intentionally and may have been the result of a well-documented breakdown in the relationship between developer and publisher. Now, the game’s creator Pavel Zagrebelnyj has denied any responsibility for the issues. Meanwhile, the game is no longer for sale on Steam as publishers Oovee work to fix “a major bug”. Spintires [official site], the splendid game of mud and massive vehicles, appears to have been intentionally damaged by its creator Pavel Zagrebelnyj. We reported on the troubles that were brewing at Oovee last year. In short, financial disagreements and Pavel’s claims that he couldn’t update the game as he wanted to had caused a division between developer and publisher. Now, players are reporting crashes and the malfunctioning pieces of code appear to have been intentionally placed – ‘timebombs’, triggered at set times or dates. There’s a fix. For the game, if not for Pavel and Oovee.

Spintires‘ post-release development has seemed at times to be mimicking the game’s subject matter, progressing with the speed of enormous lorries grinding themselves deeper and deeper into mud. Progress is being made however, slow and steady. Last Friday publishers Oovee released an update which fixes umpteen bugs, adds five new trucks, and paves the way for Steam Workshop support and mod tools to follow in the near future.

Almost free!

Ooh you could hardly hear yourself think in the RPS treehouse around when Spintires [official site] came out last year, what with Adam thundering around pretending to be a honking great lorry stuck in mud. But development slowed then by the end of the year, a nasty rift had formed between publishers Oovee and maker Pavel Zagrebelnyj, as The Flare Path reported. It sounded like Pavel might give up, and Oovee clamming up didn’t help players’ concerns either.

Thankfully, it seems they’re now on better terms, talking of public “experimental” builds and plans to bring mod support with a large update in early April.

What a con! So far ‘2015’ feels a lot like a re-badged ‘2014’. I know you shouldn’t look a free update in the mouth, but gosh, a few improvements would have been nice. How much longer must we wait for that Ebola fix… that promised ‘Peace in South Sudan’ scenario? Surely ISIL-seeking killer bees and colourblind-friendly rainbows don’t take that> long to code. I’m beginning to think the devs behind this cruel-yet-compelling massively-multiplayer Homo sapiens sim don’t care a jot for us end users. … [visit site to read more]
