Fortnite: Battle Royale is no stranger to royal displays of extravagance. Heck, that good spacedaddy Thanos ran amok in there for a while. But today, we’ve witnessed a Once In A Game experience: they shot a rocket into the sky and it made the sky not work anymore. We’re not sure what it means, but there’s plenty of video of what went down, and certainly this is all leading into the fifth season with some kind of world changing… thing. Look, I don’t know either, man.

Well. This is not what I expected to be doing today. Apparently, I’ve just pleasured my computer sexually via a series of old school Windows sliders. Set in a future where physical intimacy is (finally) a thing of the past, this free game invites you to find release in a medium that… I don’t know, man. What did I just play? Are we even playing this game or is it playing us? Do I feel used? Maybe you should just play it too. I recommend turning the sound on. It’s called It is as if you were making love and yes, it delivers on that premise.

A little known title from seventeen years ago is seeing a small screen adaptation on the horizon. Halo: Combat Evolved was a first person shooter that encouraged retro gamers to traverse national parks on a large ring and visit the local library. The TV retelling of a guy who doesn’t talk and the sexy lady who lives in his arm is coming to Showtime in 2019, thanks to Steven Spielberg’s company Amblin and The 343 Factory. It might seem odd that the world is only now remembering this title, but I’m willing to bet there was a wave of renewed interest after the DUKE Xbox controller was re-released this year as a $70, wired device, for ironic chuckles on modern systems. It’s good to look that far into the past and agree that some things don’t deserve to be left there. It’s good to not think that this took way too long to accomplish and to ask why we couldn’t have this anytime before now. It’s good to not be upset about the series of events that lead us here. It’s good to be good. Good.

Look, y’all know me. I’m your friend Brock. I love anything having to do with a cult. Hell, I went out and found my own, once. And this week, I talked about cults and games YET AGAIN. So, I was a little surprised when an indie cult game snuck under my radar. It is named, pleasantly, Honey, I Joined A Cult. The game looks to be Prison Architect but for building and controlling a gaggle of beautiful dummies that want to worship whatever type of dumb God you want to make up. There’s also a bounty of funky 70s jams to keep the mood light as you fleece your flock.

My favorite trend in gaming is finding ways to add new gameplay elements to visual novels, and today I’ve got a hybrid for y’all that looks craaaaaaazy great. Minotaur is a VN with a cyberpunk art style, beautiful animations, and a point-and-click adventure game interface. Striving to be a mix of Zero Escape/Danganronpa and Sierra/LucasArts clicky-cutes of yore, it looks like it nails the blend. There’s also a demo available to try today. Cyberpunk worlds with magic elements seem to be en vogue and I am HERE *clap* FOR *clap* IT *disappears from existence*

Myst IV

Credit where it’s due, while GOG aren’t quite as retro-focused as they used to be (now playing the role of a more traditional games store) they’ve still got that magical touch for making older games work on newer systems. Until today, Cyan World’s genre-defining Myst adventure series has been incomplete on PC.

One of the big promises of Cyan’s big collector’s edition kickstarter in April was that GOG would be updating the third and fourth games in the series to run nicely on modern machines. Today, they delivered in full – the story is complete, and unabridged once more.

Ys: Memories of Celceta

NIS America might have stumbled a bit with the PC launch of Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana, but previous publisher XSeed have stepped up to bat again for Nihon Falcom’s long-running series of consistently entertaining action RPGs. Ys: Memories of Celceta was originally released for the PlayStation Vita, but their new version allows you to play it at full HD resolutions, at framerates as high as your PC will allow and it’s due out in less than a month. Read a bit more about it and watch a generous slice of live-streamed developer footage within.

Mega Man X Legacy Collection

Nineties platformer icons are a recurring theme this summer. While the return of Crash Bandicoot doesn’t exactly set my heart ablaze, I am entirely> down with the entire 8-game Mega Man X series coming to PC, bringing us generations worth of grim anime platform robo-murder all in one place.

The two compilations now have a Steam store page and a price-tag to accompany earlier news of some interesting new playmodes, along with news that Mega Man X5’s bizarre English-only Guns N’ Roses references have been cut.

No Man's Sky - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Natalie Clayton)

no man's sky header

Some folk sure held a grudge over No Man s Sky, huh?

It s two years later, and you d still be hard-pressed to find anything on that game not followed by a few souls still screaming at the void about lying developers . Not that I expect the conversation to change – first impressions leave stubborn stains – but, next month, No Man s Sky will finally let you fly with friends. Multiplayer is finally coming. (more…)
