Planet Coaster

Planet Coaster: Console Edition launches simultaneously as an enhanced version for both Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5, as well as Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

Developer Frontier said all four versions of the rollercoaster park simulation game launch in time for Christmas 2020, but there's no release date yet.

Planet Coaster launched on PC back in 2016 and we very much enjoyed it. "It's not without its problems, but Planet Coaster is the finest park construction simulator yet," our Matt Wales wrote in Eurogamer's Planet Coaster review.

Frontier Developments has revealed that its theme park construction sim, Planet Coaster, will soon be strapping on a proton pack for a blast of 80s nostalgia, courtesy of its new Ghostbusters-themed DLC expansion.

Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis' seminal comedy-horror Ghostbusters is, of course, celebrating its 35th anniversary this year, which is presumably all the justification needed to turn it into Planet Coaster DLC. And, according to Frontier, the new Ghostbusters pack will include an "all new story-driven scenario, new gameplay mechanics, plus new rides, characters and scenery".

The teaser trailer accompanying the announcement (below), while kind of adorable, isn't particularly illuminating, but Frontier has thankfully more thoroughly detailed the DLC's innards elsewhere. According to the official reveal, the new content pack will feature a fully-voiced, narrative campaign, with Dan Aykroyd and William Atherton both starring.

Frontier Developments has unveiled the Magnificent Rides Collection, a new paid DLC update for its theme park sim Planet Coaster, coming to PC on December 18th.

Based on everything that Frontier has revealed so far, Magnificent Rides looks to be somewhat narrower in scope compared to Planet Coaster's previous paid DLC efforts. While the likes of the Spooky Pack, Adventure Pack, and Studios Pack all offered swathes of new props, building pieces, effects, and attractions, Magnificent Rides is, as its name implies, focussed purely on the latter.

In total, it includes nine new rides, one of which will have a second variant. At present, however, only three of these have been revealed.

Frontier has unveiled Planet Coaster's new World's Fair Pack, an internationally flavoured DLC expansion coming to PC next week, on October 16th.

The World's Fair Pack takes Frontier's theme park sim on a globe-hopping tour of ten different countries. The result is a brand-new collection of over 360 building and scenery items - including shops, restaurants, and billboards - inspired by the UK, France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Japan, Mexico, Morocco, China, and the USA. Ideal if you fancy attempting to build your own version of Disney's Epcot or, you know, the world.

There's the briefest glimpse of the new themes in the teaser trailer below.

UPDATE 10/7/18: Planet Coaster's new Vintage Pack DLC update, which adds a host of new building elements to the base game - all inspired by the golden age of theme parks in the early 20th century - is out now, and there's a lovely launch trailer to accompany its release.

The new video offers a welcome look at the various new scenery items, rides, props, and visual effects included in the DLC expansion, and I'm happy to see that it's considerably more impressive than Frontier's somewhat vague initial announcement made it sound.

Previous DLCs (the Spooky Pack, Adventure Pack, and Studios Pack) have offered new thematic twists on the core game's modern-day theme park aesthetic, but the Vintage Pack finally gives park builders the tools to create spaces with a notably different ambience - all wooden promenades, twinkling lights, and charming period detail.

A Planet Coaster fan has crafted an astonishing, 15-minute-long thrill ride inspired by James Cameron's movie classic Aliens, all built in-game.

YouTuber Hin Nya's meticulously themed coaster ride begins with a soaring, sweeping trip through space - complete with appropriately awe-inspiring music, of course - eventually barreling downward to the surface of LV-426, where the human colony of Hadley's Hope awaits. Before long, the coaster train enters the facility, and the horror wrought by its new inhabitants soon reveals itself, culminating in a frantic race to freedom.

The ride makes wonderfully creative use of Planet Coaster's pre-made building blocks to convincingly represent the Aliens universe. Factor in the masterful track design, lighting, effects, sound work, and pacing, and it really is something special. Indeed, it's probably even more impressive to behold if you've ever spent an afternoon trying to wrangle anything into existence using Planet Coaster's powerful, but somewhat fiddly toolset.

UPDATE 18/12/17: Planet Coaster's Indiana Jones-style Adventure Pack DLC expansion is out now, and is absolutely stuffed with beautifully designed pieces for those looking to inject a touch of 1930s pulp adventure into their theme park creations.

Alongside the abundance of expected new items - including jungle-appropriate trees, special effects, wildlife animatronics, and Aztec temple parts - it brings a heap of wonderful animated decorations. The best of these are the new Indy-style temple traps, ranging from swinging blades to spinning spikes, with a classic rolling boulder thrown in for good measure. They're the perfect way to pep up your daring mine cart rides, or, I guess, to add a bit of unexpected trauma to your souvenir shop queue.

Planet Coaster's Adventure Pack DLC is priced at 7.99 / $10.99, and you can see its exotic wares in the excellent launch trailer below.

UPDATE 4/11/17: Frontier has announced that Planet Coaster's big free anniversary update, better known as update 1.4, will launch on November 22nd.

The news also comes with a few additional details of what to expect in 1.4. The previously announced Weisshorn flat ride will now, for instance, be joined by a smaller, more compact variant known as the Monte Leone. Crucially, it has no roof and a smaller control booth to allow for easier customisation.

There's also word on the new Zenith rollercoaster, a hydraulic launched coaster with a top speed of 175mph that "roars vertically up an enormous 'Top Hat' element".
