Netflix last night announced that their Dragon’s Dogma anime series will arrive on September 17th. Based on Capcom’s open-world action-RPG of the same name, Dragon’s Dogma follows a dude who’s been brought back to life as an “Arisen”, tasked with taking out monsters that represent the seven deadly sins. Netflix announced the series last year, and now they’ve finally given a tiny look at it.

Now that Devil May Cry 5 is almost here, director Hideaki Itsuno has revealed he could have been making a very different sequel instead: a follow-up to Dragon’s Dogma. Capcom’s 2012 fantasy RPG, which came to PC in 2016, is a game I’ve heard people gush about in the same way I do Deadly Premonition, though I’m sorry to say my response has been the same “Uh huh I’ll have to check that out” that people have when I’m on about York and Zach. Itsuno says that Capcom were willing to let him do Devil May Cry 5 or Dragon’s Dogma 2 and, obviously, he chose DMC. Ah, but what could have been… and what might yet be?

Ah, Dragon s Dogma [official site], gem of Capcom s slightly weird early 201X lineup. The familiar alliteration in the title wasn t coincidence; Dragon s Dogma was Capcom s take on classic D&D, circa 1990. A fully player-designed party, a threadbare plot, a semi-open world full of dungeons, loot, levelling and a few dragons, too, and all tied together with a physics y, tactile action combat engine fresh out of the Capcom forges, allowing for the kind of dramatic combat that would drive a DM to despair as they consult the arcane rules behind grappling.

In 2015 Dragon s Dogma Online took the series online in a sequel of sorts, but as the third season of that game approaches, there’s still no sign of an English language release. Fear not though because with a little bit of tinkering, you can jump in right now, and there’s a fan translation in progress that you can enjoy the early parts of already. Just to get this one out of the way early, I love Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen [official site]. I can’t think of another game I was more excited to see liberated from its tortured existence on the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360. But performance issues aside, Dragon’s Dogma was the kind of experiment I wish more companies would be willing to take and from Capcom of all places!
