Dead of Night Re-Vamped Update News

(The audio in the video could be louder but oh well...)

Hello everyone. As usual it's been a while.

And I really wish this post was to announce the release date of the update, but unfortunately free time is something I have little of these days, so I get done what I can when I can (the bus to and from work help).

It's gonna be a while longer.
I've a brief video (which hopefully you've watched) about what's been happening with Dead of Night. Give it a watch if you can; I don't do this sort of thing normally so I hope I don't come across as an idiot!

If you didn't watch til the end you have the attention span of an orange. But if you did you'll know that there is a Beta version live on Steam!

Right click on Dead of Night

Goto Properties

Click on Betas

Click on NONE at the top right and select the Beta (no password).

As stated in the video, theres bugs. It's a Beta. Still so so so much that I want in this game. There's already loads implemented but you're not gonna see everything thats been done 'cause I don't want to spoil it for you!

Three of the 4 quests are in and pretty much complete bar bug testing and polish, but the only one you can complete is the diary (as I've locked the others off).

THERE'S A README IN THE INSTALL FOLDER, IT WOULD BE BEST TO START THERE.

So please, give the Beta a go...

ACTUALLY!!!!

Start the original first and have a go at it and THEN swap over to the Beta! Improvements should be instantly noticeable.

Thanks again to everyone. It'll be done soon (hopefully).

(big wave)
BYYYEEEEEE.

Dead of Night Revamped Update News

(THE NEXT NEWS UPDATE AFTER THIS WILL BE THE RELEASE DATE :) )

Oh, hello!

So I'm sure EVERYONE EVERYWHERE is wondering what is happening with the Dead of Night update.

it's getting done!

So theres been a good bit done with the game, Vlad can now punch and throw fireballs at people and slimes!

Eating people has been overhauled - when you press the eat key time freezes, allowing you to choose between victims. Time resumes when the person has been drained (in the blink of an eye!).

More animations have been added and will have more added before its finished.

The time display has been changed - should be easier to understand :)

The inventory system will have 'tips' that should elude to what they do, but not always.

LOADS OF DIALOGUE (and still more to put in). I had a few people asking for different languages and offers to translate it but the dialogue was hardcoded the last time (dum) BUT NOW I can hand over an xml file and just have one column edited to a different language!

There are a few minigames in, should spice things up a little (I'll let you see them!)

AAANNNDDD you can slide down your very own batpole!

And other things that I cant remember, but there is still loads to do to bring this up to the game that it should be. And as this is an adventure game, I don't want to spoil things.

So again, its getting done. The list of things to do is getting smaller but theres always something to make you pull your hair out.

This will be the last bit of news before the release date is announced.

Sooner rather than later...

Hi everyone!

Just a small update to show a few of the interiors in the game. The sewer is looking a little less plain!

Still plenty to do, but its getting there.

Thanks

Dead of Night - Blowfelt
So, its been a while! It's always been a while...

I manage to get a few hours most nights to get a few bits and pieces done, but it's coming along nicely (even know it's taking it's time!). So what's been done so far...

The main town over-world is in, bar some changes to add a bit of character. This has taken the most time to get the layout right - trying to combine two towns into one was a bit of a task to make it feel kind of natural (if that makes sense).
The sewers are mostly in, needs decorated.
Vlad's castle has been started (he's got his own vamp-pole to slide down!)

interiors are going to look a little different - some of the pictures shown are of inside Vlad's castle, the other from the sewers (that one doesn't look as good - sewers need decorated) that have a lot of black to them - not a major thing, just a nice wee touch and adds to the feel of being inside compared to all the walking about outside!

I also want to work on the music and give it a more 8-bit feel. My initial idea was to have one main song throughout, bar the ending, and never had time to sit and work at it. So, I bought a Mssiah cartridge for my c64, and a SID2SID board so i can get 6 channels out of that wee breadbox instead of 3! That should do my job nicely (just have to buy a mouse and midi stuff 'cause no ones fiddling around on a music sequencer with a Cheetah joystick!).

So, yes! Plenty more to do, still no idea when its coming out. There will me another update when I'm more comfortable with whats done. Been meaning to post an update for a few weeks really, but again there's everything else happening in my own life and the world in general. I'm glad I did hold off though, as I had a look at the main over-world theme song and thought... could do better...

Until next time, keep it cool out there!

Dead of Night - Blowfelt
It's been a while...

A lot has been happening in the world these past few months, and fortunately having a little time off has let me have a proper look at Dead of Night in ages.

There's a huge bug relating to the sword that was a left over from before the second town was added, which can lead to issues with completing the game and receiving achievements. If you stick to the quest of getting your sword back and dont travel across the river there should be no issues with unlocking achievements and completing the game properly. But still, this needs fixed.

The main game is getting an update that combines the two towns into one map. The HUD is also getting a remodel to open up the playfield a lot more. The time limit with every night is going to be adjusted (longer). Re-jig the script and combine the gold and the sword stories and also have the ability to have different languages. And other little quality of life improvements in a lot of other ways.

Work has started, but there's still plenty to do so I have no time frame as to when it will be finished.

The mini game however...

During lock down, i thought it would be a good idea to get into a small game that would help me get back into coding again, so i thought about remaking Eat-Em-Up mode as a free stand alone game!

The graphics have been given a huge re-vamp with the help of Jonathan Temples; graphic designer, artists for such c64 games as CJ's Elephant Antics and Nobby the Aardvark, and overall bloody good guy!

Still a bit to do, so stay tuned!

I have now uploaded a page that gives a brief rundown of how Dead of Night was developed. There are images of various builds, descriptions, downloads of each build and the original design document that detail a few things that I had originally wanted to implement in the game.

Enjoy the read!

Greetings everyone!

The new update to Dead of Night is now live - a secondary storyline with its own town to explore. Help Vlad rob the bank and fill his vault with gold!

There have been a few things added to the game, and a few fixes as well :

- The map in the first area would crash the game after the player interacted with it and tried to come back to the game.

- If a cop was trying to get to a dead body, and the cop that found the body had died, the game would sometimes crash.

- The intro music was (for some reason) over written with another sound effect - from what I have read, Game Maker sometimes does that.

- Flooring the coordinates of the cops / people when they spot Vlad, it would have caused the sprite to not display properly and also stopped the cops from properly finishing a path.

ADDED - Extra dialogue to the Ferryman, the party house, Fiona and Byron - just so they don't repeat their original dialogue if you talk to them twice in a row.

ADDED - FLASHING RED TIME INDICATOR when the night is ending - one complaint was that people were not too sure when the time ends and were not aware that they were going to die. This should help when you are running around eating people.

ADDED - 5 EXTRA ACHIEVEMENTS for the new quest.

MODIFIED - The save system had to be changed to accomodate the new quest. Unfortunatly this means that old saves may not be compatible so I would highly suggest that players start a new game.

So this is it for the content updates for Dead of Night. Do not take this as being abandoned, as there will still be bug fixes released if / when bugs and glitches are found.

I will be starting to upload the older prototypes / alpha versions in a while. I was looking to do that not long after I released Dead of Night, but there were bugs that had to be fixed and other updates, plus other stuff in real life that was happening.

Once the protos / alphas are released I will be starting to think about the sequel, which if all goes well will be the game that I had intended to make if I had the resources. This has been an amazing experience developing a game, and a lot of lessons have been learned. I want to thank everyone that helped and supported me, and also want to thank you, the players for taking the time to check out my first game.

And, as always, any bugs or issues, let me know!

Thanks

Aaron
