Call of Duty®: Modern Warfare® 2 (2009)

In another twist in the 'has Activision abandoned Call of Duty: Modern Warfare?' saga, Infinity Ward has now pulled two of the new maps surprise-added to the game last week.

Last week, we reported how 2019's Modern Warfare unexpectedly received three new maps, four months after Activision left the game behind to focus on Black Ops Cold War and Warzone.

The maps, added to the game as part of the mammoth mid-season two update, are Killhouse, Al-Raab Airbase (6v6) and Drainage (Gunfight).

Call of Duty: Warzone, Modern Warfare and Black Ops Cold War are all getting a cross-title Prestige system of sorts.

Season One of Black Ops Cold War, which starts in December, brings universal and synchronised player progression that works between Black Ops Cold War, Modern Warfare, and Warzone.

The Black Ops Cold War progression is similar to Modern Warfare's and incorporates a Prestige system, Activision said.

Call of Duty: Warzone will stick with its existing engine for the upcoming Black Ops Cold War integration, an Activision employee has said.

In a post on ResetEra, a user called ShutterMunster, who is verified on the site as an Activision art lead, stepped in to say "there will not be an engine shift for Warzone". Eurogamer has asked Activision for comment.

There had been speculation about whether Warzone would move over to the engine powering Black Ops Cold War after Activision confirmed Cold War's integration with Warzone kicks off in December 2020.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War will begin integrating with Warzone in December, Activision has said.

Speaking during an investor call last night, Activision's chief operating officer Daniel Alegre said this integration kicks off with Black Ops Cold War's first season. Black Ops Cold War comes out on 13th November.

It is unclear exactly how Black Ops Cold War will work within Warzone, but we do know all new Black Ops Cold War weapons and operators you unlock will be usable in both Black Ops (as you'd expect) and Warzone. Content within the Black Ops battle pass, as well as new Black Ops store content, will also work across Black Ops and Warzone.

Spooky season is upon us, and when it comes to dishing out the scares Modern Warfare really isn't playing around. Last night the game's Halloween event The Haunting of Verdansk went live, and it's safe to say players are feeling suitably haunted and scared. Or I am, at least.

The centrepiece of this update is, of course, limited time mode Zombie Royale - a variation of Warzone in which players become zombies when they die, but have a chance to return as a human if they kill enough "living" players. These aren't just your normal stumbling zombies, however, as they come armed with EMP blasts and gas grenades, can see the location of humans and their footprints, and boast a terrifying jump ability - making it all too easy for them to get on your roof. The final circles end up being particularly manic, with zombies coming from all directions (including the gas) and grenades making the whole thing spectacularly chaotic.

All this takes place on a night mode version of the Verdansk map, and this is where players are really getting some shocks. The event comes with a bunch of free Halloween rewards which can be found in supply boxes dotted around the map, but the catch is these are trick-or-treat themed... with the tricks being terrifying jumpscares. "I screamed like I've never screamed before," said one unfortunate victim on the Modern Warfare subreddit. And here's a look at a jumpscare in action:

Back in September, Activision teased The Haunting of Verdansk, a spooky new limited-time Halloween event for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Warzone; and now, ahead of its launch tomorrow, it's confirmed a whole bunch of additional details, including the news that it features cameos from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Saw.

The Haunting of Verdansk runs for two weeks - starting tomorrow, 20th October and ending on 3rd November - and brings a host of seasonally suitable gameplay additions, including nighttime infiltrations in certain Warzone modes such as Trios.

"Although the full moon's glow prevents total darkness," explains Activision, "operators might want to still pack some Thermal optics". It also warns that players can expect a few spooksome encounters, including a couple of familiar villains from the aforementioned movies, and a ghost train "filled with the souls of those who lost their lives fighting in the Gulag".
