SITUATION
The development team now focuses on polishing the Release Candidate of Update 1.66 to a splendid shape. While we're still tracking quite a number of issues in the build, we're tackling the bugs one by one, and hope to release the update in the upcoming weeks. Apart from fixes and maintenance, there are some additions coming in this patch, too. More on them later in this report.

OPSUM: Introducing the latest AI path-following improvements for wheeled vehicles.

EVALUATION:
Over the course of many years of development, Artificial Intelligence in the Arma series has grown into a very sophisticated system. For example, computing a route and following it on any terrain - be it a vanilla or a modded one - is, generally, something the AI manages to pull off on a daily basis. They are able to control multiple types of vehicle, be aware of enemies and dangerous areas, and navigate on roads and across bridges - all while avoiding collisions - but not always in the most effective manner.

As the number of options for the AI grew, the number of issues, edge cases, rare configurations and parameters rose as well. Plus, with the Apex expansion and its terrain, Tanoa, having unique bridges, the amount of the tweaks necessary for smooth gameplay increased drastically. Thus, it was finally time to re-address our AI path-finding.

The development team is now fully focusing on a clean sweep of the game. This means that for the next couple of weeks we're solely fixing bugs, focusing on performance and minor, yet long-standing issues, and polishing the game. As a consequence, all of the work is under a lock - only approved and manually selected pieces of data get in the final game and the rest has to wait until the lock is released. The plan is to finish this sweeping period by delivering Update 1.66. Hopefully, after we have results of some first build checks done by our Quality Assurance, we'll be able to publish the Release Candidate by the end of this week.

Moving into the third year after official launch, Bohemia Interactive today announced its development plans for Arma 3 in the upcoming year. Introduced via a new poston the Arma 3 developer’s blog, the 2016-17 roadmap reveals a variety of planned DLC content, as well as post-release support in the form of free platform updates.

While the Apex expansion, which released this Summer, marked a pinnacle moment in the game’s development journey, players still have a lot more to look forward to. Bohemia Interactive will continue to work on Arma 3 by improving existing content and features, optimizing game performance, and supporting the creation and installation of player-created content.

In addition, Bohemia Interactive also revealed brand new game content content, which aims to expand the combined arms nature of Arma 3 - providing fresh gameplay opportunities for existing players, while also attracting “new players looking for a gateway to a massive military experience”. Five downloadable content packages are scheduled:
  • Arma 3 Jets DLC (Q1 2017 - ETA)
  • Arma 3 'Orange' DLC (Q2 2017 - TBC)
  • Arma 3 Malden Free DLC (June 2017)
  • Arma 3 Tac-Ops DLC (Q3 2017 - TBC)
  • Arma 3 Tanks DLC (TBA)

"The creation of a new roadmap always represents a splendid opportunity to reflect upon our past efforts and think carefully about new opportunities.
