Returning to our monthly series, we're happy to announce Steam's Top Releases for the month of May. As with previous lists, we look at every game released during the month and highlight the Top 20 based on their first two weeks of revenue. We also highlight the top 5 free-to-play games, ranked by the number of unique players they acquired after launch.
No matter how many times we watch these Top Release lists come together, we're amazed by the consistent representation of games from developers around the world. It's never been easier for players to find familiar themes, locales, and cultural nods that resonate with them. Rather than siloing these experiences to certain segments of the Steam audience, developers are mindful of incorporating localized interfaces and announcements, while also adding subtitles and audio tracks for a increasing number of languages. This was on full display in May, as Top Releases supported an average of 9 languages each, with more than half offering multiple audio options. So no matter where you are reading this from, check out the full list for all the details.
Making History
May also saw releases from several big name franchises that have us looking back fondly at years of unforgettable characters and thrilling stories. As one of the most recognizable names in entertainment, Resident Evil Village marks the 25th anniversary of this legendary CAPCOM horror series. Saints Row & Mass Effect have been fixtures on Steam for more than a decade, so it's only fitting that their remastered editions are Top Releases all these years later. Fans of Shin Megami Tensei & MechWarrior have to look back even further, as these franchises debuted more than 30 years ago. Take a look at the full list of May's Franchises to pick your favorite.
Welcome New Devs
Finally, it wouldn't be a Top Release list without congratulating the teams that are releasing their first Steam game. Some of these teams have been making games for a while on other platforms, while others are making their very first commercial game. A big welcome and congrats go out to these development teams on their successful Steam debuts.

With each new month of Top Releases, players celebrate the arrival of brand new games alongside the latest installments of their favorite franchises. But April demonstrated another type of demand from players, with remastered classics capturing a big share of the Top Release chart. About a third of games this month are complete remasters or re-imaginings of games that have been popular with players for years, and in some cases decades. For those of us who are returning to these classics, added content, visuals, and support for modern hardware make the nostalgic journeys that much more enjoyable. And for new players looking to experience these games for the very first time, there is no need to dust off old consoles or search for compatibility patches in the forums. Make sure to check out all of these classics on April’s Top Releases.
Role-Playing Releases
RPGs have been popular on Steam from the very beginning, giving players control of countless heroes across a wide variety of epic stories and game designs. It's no surprise that nearly half of April's Top Releases feature a heavy dose of RPG themes and mechanics. From the stunning visuals and effects in OUTRIDERS and NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139... to the roguelite replayability of Legend of Keepers and Trials of Fire, April's RPGs offer a wide variety of mechanics, themes and stories for anyone who is ready for an adventure. TaleSpire takes the RPG theme full circle this month, by fully digitizing the tabletop role-playing experience that has inspired so many games throughout the years.
New To Steam
As we've done with past months, we'd also like to welcome the development teams who are bringing a product to Steam for the very first time. A big congrats go out to these development teams on their successful Steam debuts.

From train sets to dollhouses to building blocks, many of us have fond childhood memories of building worlds with whatever toys we could get our hands on. It comes as no surprise that many successful products on Steam tap into that same desire. This was on full display in March, with nearly half of the Top Releases giving players the opportunity to build in fresh and familiar ways. And while the mechanic itself is shared by these games, the implementation, design, and flavor are all completely unique. So whether you're ready to build a post-apocalyptic survival shelter, a siege-resistant castle town, or a relaxing and tranquil townscape, check out the full list of Top Releases and tap into your creativity.
Is this real life?
Another theme that stood out to us this month was the strong representation of simulation games based in reality. These games give us all something to recognize by incorporating real-world jobs, familiar hobbies, and well-known geographical locations. With Forza Horizon 4, players are able to push the limits of their dream cars in a photorealistic racing experience - no driver's license required. In The Bus, developers at TML-Studios painstakingly recreated downtown Berlin, where players from all over the world can experience the German capital city. And the latest installment of Out of the Park Baseball puts every team, player, metric and ballpark into the hands of fans who've always dreamed of running the front office. Check out the full list for details.
