Song of Farca - darxtorn
LudoNarraCon 2021 is over, but we are still full of excitement. On the last day of the event, the team behind Song of Farca answered players' questions in Discord. If you missed the Q&A session, we are glad to present you with the questions that seemed to us the most interesting.
Feel free to ask us questions in the comment section!

Q: So there was a great panel during the event that mentioned how Cyberpunk stories reflect the time and era they're in. How do you feel your game reflects the current times we're living in? What are some of the main issues you wanted to exaggerate and call attention to?
A: Great question! The world of Song of Farca reflects the unstoppable technological progress that we all witness right now, with the IT corporations gathering as much power as some of the governments, but at the same time, you have ordinary citizens such as our hero being able to track down people and hack their private lives with a press of a button.

Q: Is vigilantism and taking justice into your own hands a big theme in this game?
A: Izy is a private investigator under house arrest. Not a vigilante, basically.
She is more like Jessica Jones, not Batman.

Q: What were your main inspirations from other mediums?
A: Thank you, glad you liked it! If we are only talking about other mediums, then that would be:
Black Mirror
Love, Death & Robots
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
True Detective
other thriller/detectives like Se7en and The Silence of the Lambs

Q: What was the writing process for the cases like?
A: In some cases (more classic detective ones), we counted on the story and characters. The narrative work there was built from outcome to set.
In others, we wanted specific gameplay elements and adjusted things to our needs.
As the narration is built according to the classic serial structure (relatively unrelated cases, which are then merged into a single plot), our hands were pretty untied.

One of the main initial ideas was to have a hero who solves his problems without leaving her house (way before the current world situation btw).
Thus, remote-hacker-detective was born and the world around her was built accordingly.

Q: What were the inspirations for the node like interface and overall graphical style?
A: We are absolutely amazed by the works of Alberto Mielgo (Spanish animator, artist, and director). He has a significant impact on the visual of Song of Farca.

Q: Can you elaborate more about how the hacking mechanics work? It seems quite different than how most games tackle it, which is usually a quick puzzle mini-game.
A: We've tried to take point-n-click mechanics and implement hacking using familiar gameplay while also being diverse and immersive.
We do have mini-games as well as puzzles and other mechanics in store for the full version. 😉

Q: How did you nail the sounds and atmosphere so well?
A: All thanks to our genius sound designer! Hopefully, you'll like the atmosphere of the full game even more.

First of all thank you very much if you've purchased the game. I appreciate your support!. I've been taking the time to make an amazing new version! So sorry for the big delay. I know there's not a lot going on in the public version.

But...

There's a lot going on in the test version! I'm working very hard and a lot has been going on under the hood. For example: I've downsized the game from ~600MB to ~217MB.

Also, I've been optimizing the graphics even further. The change of style increased performance enormously but I've done a lot more to increase performance. You can expect even +150FPS gain in the new version compared the current public.

As part of the major rework I've been redesigning the menus (this is Work In Progress so feedback is appreciated):

There's a new option called ProMode which basically desaturates everything gameplay-unimportant and emphasizes what is important:

Blood is redder! :)

And lastly - the community is hard at work having fun with the new map editor:

More updates soon!
And feel free to join our Discord: https://discord.com/invite/Ar3QM7d
It's where everything is happening. You can also find instructions on how to access the test build there.

Have fun!

Ready or Not - Jonno
Hey community,

Guinevere is back with another update from the team on PvE in Ready or Not!

This week we're showing you two officers going through part of Hotel, a cramped and confined environment where effective use of cover, equipment and weaponry is key.

We've got some new video content to go alongside today's post coming in at nearly two minutes, so let's get stuck in...

Introduction

Hey everybody

It's time for another edition of our biweekly Dev Blog. This week we'll be showcasing some more PvE gameplay, accompanied with elements of Ready or Not's original soundtrack.

PvE Gameplay

From the first step inside, you know things have gone horribly wrong. The dispatch call didn't do it justice: corpses cover the floor, trails of blood from crawling, wounded survivors, gunshots still echoing from deeper within. Smoke in the air, alarms blaring, fire spreading. Screams of terror. Civilians running from the carnage. Suspects on every floor, on edge with itchy trigger fingers. It's up to you to put a stop to it.

Securing Hotel

Above: A series of engagements with suspects in Hotel, set to Ready or Not's original soundtrack.

Each encounter in the above video requires the two officers to respond differently. Entering the giftshop leaves the team exposed to multiple lines of fire as windows are shot out and suspects close in from adjacent rooms. In this case, speed of action is vital to take control of the situation before you're surrounded. By contrast, the parking garage involves long distances, poor visibility, and innumerable places for suspects to seek cover.

Preparation and precision will be key here, as any move forward runs the risk of a suspect flanking behind you unseen from the darkness while car alarms trigger from shots fired. The upper levels combine these two elements, with long hallways and bullet-ridden rooms containing potential suspects.

The dichotomy of cramped, close quarters combat and longer rage engagements is something that you can see throughout Hotel, and will require that you equip yourself and your squadmates accordingly to handle. For every successful breach and clear that you see in the above video, there were a dozen attempts by over eager players that didn't prepare, didn't coordinate, and didn't execute properly. Failing to account for the mission briefing, your location, and the situation at hand means that lives can be lost: yours as well as those that you have sworn to protect.

Conclusion

That brings us to the end of today's biweekly Dev Blog, covering more Alpha PvE gameplay and some of Ready or Not's soundtrack. I hope to see you all next time for more development news!

Keep your feet on the ground.

CryoFall - ai_enabled
The information below is no longer valid as starting with R31 "Singleplayer Update" the local server is seamlessly integrated into the game client. Other players can also connect to you over LAN (new tab in Multiplayer menu) and even over the internet with virtual LAN (with software such as Hamachi).
Please read the announcement:
https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/829590/view/2987567056728476348

Local server is currently provided as an experimental feature. We've received plenty of players' feedback that it works rock-stable already!

The server rates are customized to make it more fitting for a single-player experience: no structure decay, bosses require only a single player to defeat (you can adjust all these rates by editing ServerRates.config file), 60 FPS tick rate, x2 LP, x2 skill XP, x1.5 item gathering.

Running the local game server will require only an extra 1 GB of free RAM and several % of a typical CPU's resources.

Please note: this feature is not available for demo players as the demo version can be played only on the official and featured community servers.

How to launch and use the local server
  • 1. Navigate to the game folder (open Steam Client, right-click on CryoFall -> "Manage" -> "Browse local files")

  • 2. Double click on the "CryoFall Local Server" file. The console window for the local server will open and the server will start loading. Usually, it takes roughly a minute before the server is accessible (do not worry if it doesn't stop writing various information into the console—it's running properly and reports performance metrics). You may need to approve its access in Firewall if such a prompt will be displayed
  • 3. Launch the game client as usual
  • 4. Navigate to the "SERVERS" menu and open the "Custom" tab on the right side of the tabs bar (it has a distinctive "+" icon)

  • 5. Connect to the "localhost" server (the first one in the list; it may take 1-2 minutes before it's accessible)
  • 6. After you've finished playing, simply close the console window of the game server and it should automatically stop and save your progress (it also performs an autosave every hour same as multiplayer servers)

Extra information
The save game and the server rates configuration file are stored in this folder:
<Your Documents>/AtomicTorchStudio/CryoFall/
If you cannot find AtomicTorchStudio folder in your Documents, please copy-paste this path into Windows Explorer's address bar:
%LocalAppData%/AtomicTorchStudio/CryoFall/

If you want to reset your local server, just stop it and delete the Saves folder.
