Myst: Masterpiece Edition - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (John Walker)

I have been rude about Myst for longer than many readers will have been alive. Seriously, I’m talking for 21 years professionally, and six years before that as a hobbyist hater of terrible games. But, today I confront myself with an uncomfortable reality: I’ve not played it in a very> long time. I’ve been wrong about other games. What if I’m wrong about Myst? What if my deep-set loathing of this screensaver with levers is based on the opinions of a less advanced earlier iteration of myself?

HDR on PC hasn’t improved much in 2019. Despite there being more HDR gaming monitors than ever before, the very [cms-block]s for HDR continue to be quite expensive compared to non-HDR monitors, and the situation around Windows 10 support for it is still a bit of a mess. However, provided you’re willing to fight through all that, then the next step on your path to high dynamic range glory is to get an HDR compatible graphics card.

Below, you’ll find a complete list of all the Nvidia and AMD graphics cards that have built-in support for HDR, as well as everything you need to know about getting one that also supports Nvidia and AMD’s own HDR standards, G-Sync Ultimate and FreeSync 2. I’ve also put together a list of all the PC games that support HDR as well, so you know exactly which PC games you can start playing in high dynamic range.

Though summer is weeks away, DRM-free digital games store GOG today kicked off their summer sale. So people will go along with this ridiculous ‘summer’ charade, they’re bribing us all with a free copy of Obduction, the latest explore-o-puzzler from Myst developers Cyan Worlds. Don’t worry, pals: if you squint you can still click the button for a freebie without sullying yourself with false summer. Oh, also, loads of video games are discounted right now because it’s a sale, yeah?

HDR on PC continues to be a bit of a mess these days, but provided you haven’t been put off by the astronomical prices of the [cms-block]s for HDR or, indeed, the ongoing debacle surrounding Windows 10 support for it, then the next step on your path to high dynamic range glory is to get an HDR compatible graphics card.

Below, you’ll find a complete list of all the Nvidia and AMD graphics cards that have built-in support for HDR, as well as everything you need to know about getting one that also supports Nvidia and AMD’s own HDR standards, G-Sync HDR and FreeSync 2. I’ve also put together a list of all the PC games that support HDR as well. There aren’t many of them, all told, but I’ll be updating this list with more titles as and when they come out so it’s always up to date.

HDR on PC is a bit of a mess, but provided you haven’t been put off by Windows 10’s hazy support for it or the astronomical prices of the best gaming monitors for HDR, then the next step on your path to high dynamic range glory is to get a graphics card that actually supports it. Riven (1997) - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Alice O'Connor)

In its ongoing mission to bring old point ‘n’ click adventure games into an easy, stable, and cross-platform environment, the ScummVM project has launched a hefty update supporting another 23 games. This includes some real heavy hitters, slamming in such wonders as Phantasmagoria and Plumbers Don’t Wear Ties. At times I’ve been dismissive of unpleasant and clumsily erotic ‘mature’ FMV games but I have warmed to them over time; they have a certain surreal charm. Oh, and I suppose you might also be interested in knowing the new version also adds support for games like Starship Titanic, Police Quest 4, and Gabriel Knight. But mostly Plumbers Don’t Wear Ties. “Myst!” cry the history books. “The game that launch’d a thousand CD-ROM drives!” Though our own Walker the Contrarian might say, I imagine, that what’s best in life is “To crush your enemies, see them play Riven before you, to hear the lamentations of their comments.” But stuff the history books and stuff John, this is right here, right now, and today Myst developers Cyan launched their latest adventure game. Following a Kickstarter and several delays, Obduction [official site] is now out.

You may well chortle at John’s Myst ranting but it’s no joke to those of us around him. Talking about Myst sends John into a blood rage and even seeing those four little letters can be enough – I once saw him bite clean through a steel-cased DVD box set of Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries>. But shh, John’s done for the day so I think I’m safe to post this as long as you don’t make any loud noises or sudden movements. Let’s go.

Myst makers Cyan have announced another delay for Obduction [official site], their shiny all-new adventure game.
