Remember Games for Windows Live? It's a name I've not heard for a long time, but something which was still plaguing Fallout 3: Game of the Year Edition on PC until just this week.

Games for Windows Live was Microsoft's much-hated first attempt at getting Xbox Live-style features on PC, stuffed in a launcher that no one wanted to use, and initially for a $50/year subscription.

After launching back in 2007, many PC games at the time were coded to require GFWL - including Fallout 3 GOTY - although most have since been updated to no longer need it.

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion® Game of the Year Edition (2009)

Back in January, we got a pretty extensive look at the remastered environments and quests being made for Skyblivion - a mod project seeking to remake Oblivion in the Skyrim engine. The team behind this ambitious project has continued making progress, and the latest mod development video focuses on some of the stunning landscapes that are now nearing completion.

According to the new video, the majority of Skyblivion's map is now in the final stages of development, and the work shown so far is seriously impressive. The video discusses how areas such as the forest surrounding the Orange Road have been adapted and improved for the remake. The team decided to make the forest "more lush and detailed than its original counterpart" and make it larger to give it a more prominent role in the game, citing the area's ambience and popularity with players as the reason for giving it more attention.

Blackwood, meanwhile, has been given more fortifications and border gates to add points of interest. The new boggy marsh at the centre of Blackwood, called Blackmarch, looks suitably horrifying and spooky - promising players a subregion full of ruins and decay. The city of Leyawiin has been redesigned from the ground up "referencing concept art from Oblivion that was likely discarded owing to technical and time limitations", with the city divided into three distinct sections. Boats are now able to sail right through the city, allowing them to go further inland.

The people behind Skywind have issued a video update for the eye-catching fan project - and it still sounds a long way away from completion.

Skywind is a non-commercial, fan-made modification for The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim that recreates The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind with the enhanced graphics and capabilities of Skyrim's engine.

In the video, below, the Skywind team show off the work done so far, and announce a few major milestones, such as the completion of almost all the concept art.

We're still a long way from the release of Elder Scrolls 6 - a game that remains as mysterious as ever - so if you're looking for another Elder Scrolls project with no release date to get excited about, I have just the thing.

Skyblivion, a mod project that's been in development since 2012, aims to remake The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion using Skyrim's engine - and while there's still no release date for the mod, the latest update video shows significant progress. Focused on the mod's remastered environments and quests, it's a lovely version of Cyrodiil reimagined with a mixture of Skyrim and custom-made assets.

According to mod team TESRenewal, most of the mod's exterior environments are already on their "first pass", with the team now looking to add polish and additional details to the outside world. The team is working on a whopping 2663 interiors, and is currently in the process of reworking all the caves, mines and dungeons from Oblivion. While Oblivion often reused its dungeon designs, the Skyblivion mod team is making them more unique: designing them based on NPC and book descriptions found in the original game. Plenty of Oblivion assets have been given a redesign, but the mod team seems to be looking for even more 3D artists to help with all this fancy furniture.

It never occurred to me that the herbs might be real. Why would it? I was used to picking things like Ghost Mushrooms and Dreamfoil, and I'm pretty sure they're not real. And so to me, walking around the wilderness of The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion - what a lovely game that was, and what a lot of walking I did, like some kind of possessed rambler in plate mail - there was nothing particularly notable about ripping handfuls of St. Jahn's Wort and Bergamot out of the ground while I explored. Just another made-up herb, I thought. And who came up with the name St. Jahn's Wort anyway? It sounds disgusting. What is it, shavings?

Chokeberry, Cairn Bolete, Elf Cup, Lady's Smock, Monkshood: they all sounded made-up to me. I mean Elf's Cup for Christ's sake! (It'd be a good cup to toast with, though, wouldn't it? "Here's to your good elf!" and that.) They're all straight from the pages of fantasy, surely?

Then one day everything changed. I was in a health store, don't hold that against me, when something caught my eye: a packet on a shelf claiming to be able to heighten my mood. St. John's Wort. I practically fainted into the Rescue Remedies. It's real?!

The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind® Game of the Year Edition

The modders behind Skywind have released its first gameplay demo in a year, showing off how an original Morrowind quest has been expanded and improved for this hotly-anticipated fan release.

Skywind is Morrowind recreated in the Skyrim engine. It's been in the works for quite some time now, but the volunteer developers continue to make progress, as the video below shows.

The video sees the player picking up a quest in the city of Sadrith Mora, NPC dialogue, voice acting, exploration, dungeon crawling in a multi-level dwemer ruin alongside a companion (Imperial Larienna Macrina), and a boss fight against a Daedroth called Hrelvesuu.

Skywind is back with a new video - and Morrowind looks better than ever.

Skywind, perhaps the most ambitious mod in development right now, recreats Bethesda's much-loved 2002 role-playing game Morrowind in the newer Skyrim engine. It's a mammoth undertaking, and the group of modders behind the project have been working on it for years now.

The video, below, is a developer video series and a call to arms for help from volunteers who may be able to push Skywind over the finish line.

The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind® Game of the Year Edition

The Elder Scrolls is one of the most illustrious sagas in video game history, which is perhaps why Skyrim has been ported to everything short of a calculator over the last eight years. However, although Skyrim and its predecessor Oblivion are vast oceans containing a wealth of wonderfully intricate curios, their oft-overlooked older sibling Morrowind is a bottomless lake, its boundless depths plummeting into the territories of magic, secrecy, and the unknown.

Since Morrowind launched in 2002, players have been exploring its every nook and cranny, desperately seeking to unravel its most intimately hidden secrets. Perhaps the most accomplished of these Morrowind mystery hunters is Redditor OccupyTamriel, who has discovered countless hidden treasures buried in Morrowind's deepest recesses.

"I started playing Elder Scrolls when a very dear friend of mine told me about the series," OccupyTamriel tells me. "I needed a lot of time to get used to Morrowind - the sheer complexity of the world and the mechanics, the invisible per-attack dice roll, and just being lost and making no progress were extremely off-putting."

OK, so I know Eurogamer's actual birthday was two days ago, but as is our style, the Eurogamer video team is once again Late to the (birthday) Party.

Over the past three years, we've been introducing each other to our favourite (and/or least favourite) games from yesteryear as part of our Late to the Party series. During that time we've shared our love (and/or hatred) for over one hundred and fifty different games and thanks to this, we've been able to make a compilation episode of LTTP that features one game from every year that Eurogamer has been alive.

In this video, Aoife, Zoe and I are joined by some friendly video team faces from the past (who?!) as we play our way through the 20 years worth of games, including 1999's Dino Crisis, 2006's Gears of War and 2017's PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds. Basically, if you want a healthy dose of nostalgia (or just want to feel rather old) this is the video for you!

The people behind Skywind have released a gameplay demo of the mod - and it's pretty impressive.

The gameplay video, below, shows off how the modders have recreated Morrowind in the Skyrim engine. We see the player pick up a bounty in town, head off out into the wild and into a dungeon to kill the target before returning for a reward.

This is classic The Elder Scrolls stuff and on the face of it not particularly groundbreaking, but there's a level of polish here we don't often see from mods. The music, voice acting and town AI is all present and correct, and we even get to see some spear combat.
