When the Darkness comes - Sirhaian
Hi everyone!

I can't believe it has already been over 8 months since the Steam release. What a ride it's been. I first wanted to thanks everyone for the extraordinary support and all your kind words. It means a lot to me.

So, as most of you know already...

When the Darkness comes is a walking simulator whose glitchy and dark tale tries to illustrate the hardships of depression and anxiety through a variety of imaginary digital landscapes.

After seeing all the support and kind words you have shared with me, I decided to enter this experience in the Steam Award Nominations. Considering I do not have a marketing team or great social presence, I do not realistically expect much out of this, but if you have enjoyed this experience, you will now have the choice to vote for it or not.

We all love choices, don't we?

Thanks again everyone for all your support. Really, I mean it. It has helped me immensely. And my hope is that this experience helped a few of you.

May you always follow your light,
Sirhaian

Hi, everyone!

Patch 1.16d is very minor, but thought I'd push it before going to sleep.

  • Changed up the Breathe level (Chapter X) in the second playthrough.
  • Lengthened the game's launch warnings to hopefully get more people to read them.
  • Added an extra warning requiring the user confirmation before going to the Main Menu.

And that's all for now!

Never forget to always follow your light!

Hi, everyone!

Here's another small patch with a few changes and requested features, listed below:

1.16c Changelist
  • Added an option to invert the mouse in both horizontal and vertical axes (selectable individually).
  • Added an option to toggle vSync, which should hopefully fix some performances issues. Let me know how that one goes!
  • Fixed a collision bug in the School level, where players could escalate an invisible wall and potentially leave the school premises. School is mandatory, no leaving allowed!
  • Adjusted the walk and run speeds in the School level, to hopefully make it a bit less of a chore. In other news, I have also posted the School's aerial map in the Guides section. If you're stuck, go have a look!
  • Sliiiightly turned up the light in School. Won't change much in some areas, but should help a bit in some others.
  • Done some minor lighting optimization.
  • A couple minor bug fixes.

Thanks again for all your love and support! It's all really appreciated. I'm trying to read all the reviews and comments, promise!

Let me know if any of those changes are broken, or if you find any other bug~!

And as always: remember to follow your Light!

Hi, everyone!

First of all, thank you SO much for all the support. I am truly overwhelmed by the reception this experience is getting. I expected it to fly under the radar, and that would have been fine. I truly never expected it to get this many good reviews, either. So, thank you. Really.

I've been reading through the posts and reviews, and I've tried fixing some issues. Here's a changelist below.

- Added a Mouse Sensitivity option in the pause menu. Let me know if that helps!
- Tried fixing the controller bug where the camera would keep rotating around. I cannot reproduce the issue myself, so I've no way to test the fix. Would love it if anyone could help me verify the fix, or tell me if it still doesn't work. :)
- Fixed the issue where the player would continue moving forward even after the key is released.

A potential fix for the controller issue discovered on the forum would be to uninstall vJoy if you have it installed.

I have also removed the "Partial Controller Support" descriptor from the Store Page, as controllers have been having issues.

Thanks again, everyone!

And remember: always follow your Light!

Hi, everyone!

Here are the changes between the older version 1.15b, which was initially available on itch.io, and this newer 1.16 version.

If this is your first time with this Experience, do not read those changes, as they contain spoilers.

There has been a LOT of changes. Some very small and barely noticeable, some as big as story changes. Here's a non-exhaustive list:

Significant changes:
Those changes are significant and, if you've played the game before, you should read through them.
  • Steam version! WTDC has over 30 achievements spread across the three possible Arcs.
  • New and improved third Arc. The previous version was a bit too short and not very impactful. I've added a couple extra scenes to it.
  • The "Extra" files are now saved in your My Documents folder instead of inside the game's installation folder. This was necessary due to Steam often being installed in Program Files, which makes it impossible for the Experience to save files without admin privileges.
  • Pause menu now allows you to change the volume and quality settings in real time!
  • The pause menu now also works with a controller.
  • The Sunlit City now triggers without choosing Happiness in the First Arc.
  • A bunch of new little texts and changes to the game in the Second Arc.
  • The Main Menu now shows which Arc you're currently at, and there's also a volume slider.
  • Each new scene now shows "Progress Saved", along with the chapter number and name. Just in case some people didn't know: yes, there's an auto-save feature. The game saves your progress whenever a new level is loaded up.
  • Some more optimization changes, mostly through better anti-aliasing and lighting.
  • Made the bad ending choice a bit more obvious.
  • Changed up position of the Dormitory's clock in the Second Arc.
  • Added event if you push the Ball in a Goal.
  • The startup config menu has been removed in-favor of in-game controls! You can now change your quality settings and switch between the QWERTY and AZERTY keyboard layouts directly from the pause menu!
  • Don't try lying about your purpose(s) in life.

Smaller changes:
Those changes are mostly for quality of life or under the hood improvements.
  • Subtitles are now set to show by default. You can obviously decide to remove them at any time!
  • Slightly increased speed in School level, as it is one of the biggest levels and can take quite some time to complete.
  • Fixed the forced application ending when choosing the bad ending.
  • Added sofa in the Purpose room and finally re-opened the windows.
  • Added text in opposite direction of the Black Hole, and changed up the usual text.
  • Added some more credits in final level(s).
  • Re-positioned drowning/respawn trigger in the Lake scene.
  • Deactivated jump ability once your movements are slowed in the Poem level.
  • Lowered the "back" mannequin eyes position in the Metro scene.
  • Adjusted a bunch of post-processing values. No more green underwater!
  • Added some dust in the City light.
  • Removed the lights from the Forest trees. There were waaay too many of them. Should greatly improve performance in the area.
  • Adjusted some texture cuts in a few areas.
  • Adjusted some sound volumes for a better overall mix.
  • Adjusted position of the "You're not a new player" message in the Second Arc.
  • Desktop grab should now only grab the main screen instead of all your screens.
  • Added sounds when walking in the Sewers' low water.
  • Added/adjusted colliders (invisible walls) in some levels to avoid people from wandering too far away.
  • Added some more models in the Hermitage level.
  • Improved the camera tracking script's performances.
  • New "Extra" file added when first starting the Experience.
  • Changed up Factory's atmosphere a bit to be slightly darker and less saturated.
  • Adjusted City's reflections and overall atmosphere. Reduced the amount and intensity of glitches.
  • Fixed shadows offset in School level.
  • Glitched up the Second Arc's end scene more.
  • Fixed some of the Z-fighting issues in a few areas.

Thanks everyone for your amazing support, and as always: don't forget your light.
